Lotus was feeling rather perplexed, she simply couldn't understand why Ashley was interested in this latest job. Apparently this 'Inspector' Nolan was a key individual in town and worth getting to know. Lotus wasn't really listening to the man explain the job to her and Ash but she did hear the key point, they needed to remove an overgrown weed.

"Remove tree? . . . Easy."

Creating a small flame in her hand to reveal her magic Lotus clearly indicates her intention. If this tree is a problem, then she'd just burn it down. Simple.

"I don't think that is a good idea. It's in the middle of the city and several people have already gotten sick from contact with it. Burning it may spread the illness, we also need a sample. The scientists would prefer one that isn't ash."

The inspector quickly dumped cold water on Lotus's plan. She pouted and looked at Ashley with pitiful eyes.

Unlike Dex, Inspector Nilan was a real detective. One with actual training and the brains to detect real rumours from false ones and connect the dots. A rune knight that had experience and had been building a very good reputation for himself amongst the general populace of Orchidia.

Everything Ashley wanted to be in the future, well besides a rune knight. They didn't care about the whole lawful part of things. Being able to solve people's problems with sound logic, that's what they dreamt of, as well as being paid for it of course.

He'd brought Ash and their sister to the site of the beanstalk. A mysterious plant, one seemingly responsible for making the locals ill whenever they came into contact with it.

Taking precautions, Ash was sure to wear gloves and a mask to protect themselves from any physical contagions as well as possible airborne ones. Lotus was keen to burn it, and while that *might* have helped, there was no guarantee that doing so wouldn't leave the town in even worse condition.

First things first though, they needed to collect some samples before they dealt with it outright. They gave Lotus a small smile, and pet her on the head.

"Hold back for now, it might be better to freeze and shatter it that way, rather than risk exploding the place with toxins." Ashley suggested, "Let me just gather the samples first."

If they could have scientists properly analyze the plant, perhaps they could find a cure to the sickness at the very least, if not find the root cause, allowing them to prevent further stalks from potentially popping up.

No fire. How boring.
Lotus's pout was interrupted when her sister petted her head which instantly reversed her mood. Since Lotus was a good obedient sister, if Ashley didn't want her to burn it then she wouldn't. She couldn't help but lament thou if only her fire could burn the toxins as well as the plant. It seems she'd have to train more in the future.

Freezing it in order to shatter it seemed like an interesting idea, she did also need to practice more ice magic. Freezing the entirety of such a large tree would be difficult if not impossible so she'd have to concentrate on one section. Then smash it so the whole tree fell over? Is that actually any easier than just cutting it with an axe? This would require some thought.

Lotus was lost in her thoughts and didn't even notice Ashley was done collecting the samples until her sister nudged her to get her attention.

"Sorry Ashley~, what were you saying?"

"Ice, Lotus." They sighed, of course, the little blonde kitten hadn't been listening, "Freeze it and then we can smash it into pieces without running the risk of spreading sickness. Your ice can keep that all trapped inside. Well, in theory..." They added, honestly unsure, but it had to be safer than burning it down, that much was for sure. Transporting out the ice blocks to the forest and away from town would probably be their best bet. At least until the proper authorities had the chance to move them somewhere far away from the township altogether.

Unfortunately, Ashley didn't possess the magical capabilities their sister did. Therefore they'd be heavily relying on her power.

"Just don't overdo it, if you need a break, make sure to take it. It's not like it's going anywhere..." They trailed off looking back at the overgrown beanstalk that unfurled up towards the sky. This definitely wasn't going to be a quick task, but they trusted Lotus, at least to do her part. Nilan and his fellow rune knights would surely be able to handle the rest.

Lotus
"Ah right Ice, of course I can do that~"

Lotus sounded a lot more confident than she felt but if Ashley believed in her then she'd just have to succeed. She wasn't entirely sure how to start, while she could cool down her ice-cream. The tree was a lot bigger and would require far more power.
Outside of keeping ice-cream cool her main use of frost magic was creating spikes from ice to pierce things, not exactly helpful for this situation.

As Lotus approached the tree she pulled off her left glove and placed her hand directly on the trunk ignoring Ashley's sudden protest. She could try just channeling frost mana directly into the tree. The process appeared to work with the area she touched eventually freezing solid. As she continued to feed mana into the beanstalk the frost slowly spread. The pace however was glacial, this was going to take a very very long time.

Ashley had told her not to push herself but Lotus was determined to do this so she ignored her mounting exhaustion and stubbornly pressed on until finally the entire thing was one solid piece of ice.

"See Ash, told you I could do it." Lotus weakly mutters before nearly collapsing, her mana spent and her body exhausted.
She was confident Ashley would handle the rest, such as taking the sample to Nolan and most importantly getting paid.

Which means that Lotus can simply sleep. With this she didn't try to fight it anymore and simply let unconsciousness claim her.
