Nuala was fumbling with her bags and looking through her belongings. She had moved most of her stuff to an inn in downtown Era, where she was now renting a place for the time being. She didn’t know how long she would be in the central town, but it was probably going to be a few months. Now that she was guildless again, returning to Oak wasn’t an option. It was no longer her home so for now she would have to make due with a room in some random inn in some random town once again. Nuala couldn’t recall how many times she had been at this point in her long, long life, but in a way she was getting tired of it. She couldn’t really do much about it though, as there wasn’t exactly an alternative to this. Nuala was a nomad, if you want to call it that, and she had never thought about buying any sort of property anywhere. In the past few years, she had mostly lived in the guild buildings of the guilds she had called her home, but maybe now was the time to change that behavior and settle down somewhere for good.

Era definitely wasn’t the place for that though. There were way too many people here, or rather, too many people who were related to the law in some type of way. The demon wasn’t exactly evil (against what you might think about her race), but she wasn’t a good girl either. Nuala had done her fair share of crimes, although she had never been caught before, which was visible due to her lack of bounty. Because of this, the thief could move relatively freely around without taking on the suspicions of the guards around her, but at the same time it wasn’t exactly comfortable either. Because of this, Nuala kept a low profile while she was in Era. Of course being involved with a Rune Knight wasn’t helping with her trying to stay lowkey, but in a way it was fine and could be handled if she was simply careful enough. And if Nuala was good at something, it was sneaking around. So far she had moved in and out of his quarters without being noticed and she wanted to keep it that way. However, she wasn’t interested in making those chambers her personal home for the time being, so an alternative was needed.

Hence, the inn. It was a decently big room that had everything she needed. A sleeping room with a surprisingly comfortable bed (she had chosen to pay a bit of a higher price this time around, and it turned out it was very much worth it) and a bathroom and enough storage for her to keep her belongings and store most of them away. She had left the very important stuff that mattered a lot to her personally at the rune knight’s quarter but for now, this would do. Nuala wasn’t a wanted person so she wasn’t worried about losing anything here to anyone who would be looking to break in and rob her. The room, again, was comfortable. There was a big window and a small balcony as well, so Nuala could have breakfast outside if she wanted to. It was, all in all, not a bad deal for the time being. Since it was downtown as well, she was about 30 minutes away from the rune knights quarters so she hoped there wouldn’t be too much traffic here when it came to the law abiding citizens. The bathroom was spacious and clean as well.

All in all, a very good deal. With her freetime, Nuala decided to do what she always did, which was look for work. After arriving here, she had also rented a spot at the stables for shadowmere. The stablemaster, a capable, older man who clearly had many years of experience with horses. Her stallion would be safe and well-fed there and well taken care of. Of course, a spot like that wasn’t expensive, and while Nuala was never exactly poor (she had her ways of making money after all), having a stable income was certainly a wise choice and therefor she would need to find some work. Of course there was always something to do for a woman like her, especially in a town like this. There were always people who needed help and frankly, the rune knights weren’t the first stop for most people. It was a question of money and moral in a way and perhaps it was better that way. Nuala knew that even a town like Era had its problems. Especially with gangs, which always seemed to rise exactly in places where a strong presence of law was to be found. It was as if those two opposites couldn’t quite live without each other.

Opposites attract, or whatever you call it, and because of this, Nuala was certain she would find something to do. There was of course a resurgence of power within the rune knights lately and the demon was certain that they had most of the issues in relation to gang war fare in control, however some gangs were still existing and they weren’t stamped out entirely, by no means. However, of course Nuala didn’t plan on stamping out the gangs and helping out the rune knights, that was a bit too much, even for her. No, there were many other ways those gang warfares could be influenced through a person like her and in spite of being guildless now, Nuala sure as hell didn’t plan on becoming a good person. In fact, she was pretty set on befriending a gang - or rather, becoming acquainted with one (as you couldn’t really befriend them without becoming part of one and joining them, and she didn’t want to go that far). Surely they would have some sort of work for her. And if she proved to be reliable, there would be lots of money involved as well.

Nuala knew that gangs dealt with drugs and all sorts of black market items, so money was never an issue. Really, it was a financially stupid choice to go with any other side other than the ones of the bad guys in this scenario and who knew? Maybe she wouldn’t even have to take care of any rune knights at all. After all gangs had issues with everybody, including other gangs. There would be plenty of things to do for her, so for today her first mission was getting to know some of them and trying to get involved with one gang that would end up paying her a good sum of money. For that occassion, Nuala had dressed appropriately. She wore a long, black dress, sleeveless, with thigh high back boots. Her hair was tied up so it wouldn’t bother her should a fight ensue and over her clothes, she wore a black wool coat to make sure she looked the part. Her weapons were with her at all times, but hidden savely beneath her clothes. When Nuala stepped out, it was night time already - the perfect time of the day to put everything in the right mood.

The places that those type of gang members frequented weren’t easy to find for someone who didn’t know what they were looking for. Nuala, of course, knew and as the sun had set completely and the moon was out on the night sky, the demon entered an underground bar that was small upon first glance but massive once you entered it. Beautiful jazz music was playing in the background, and everyone who frequented this place was dressed in elegant and expensive looking clothes. Nuala was greeted by a waiter at the entrance, where she left her cloak before being led to the bar. Here, she would settle down for the night and see if she could get into contact with anyone. People knew that someone like Nuala was most likely here for work and not pleasure, because she wore her daggers out on display and they made the message very obvious. Nuala ordered a simple alcoholic drink and began sipping on it while checking out the people around her and chatting up a few other female customers, mostly for the hell of it. It was after a while that she had found herself in conversation with a lady, that things seemed to process into a certain direction.

The conversation between them changed from light hearted small talk to more serious topic, and the woman began giving out info about herself, that was quite relevant and Nuala realized she had unintionally chatted up the right person. She introduced herself as Ivana and Ivana was indeed married to the leader of one of the town’s most profilic gangs. They traded drugs and weapons on the black market and as expected, they needed someone to do their dirty work. Of course Nuala was way more capable than that, but she knew that she had to start small and work her way up the ladder. Of course it wasn’t like Nuala didn’t have a lot of infamy going for herself. She wasn’t famous per se, but she wasn’t unknown either and her ability to fight was quite well known among people of these ranks. But it was okay, for now. Nuala knew that even with simple work, she would be paid well. After exchanging information with Ivana, they decided that Nuala would be given a trial quest, so to speak. Something small to see whether or not she was cut out for this type of work.

And in a way, also to see if they would be able to work together and if Nuala was up to it. It was simple enough: rune knights were looking to stop them, however their task force was small and it was probably enough to send a warning. Ivana knew that they had a few documents on their gang, maps with locations marked down and whatnot. She wanted Nuala to find those documents, destroy them and make sure those rune knights lost all the information they had on their gang. This type of action would serve as a warning and obviously didn’t include any fights or murder yet. It was almost too easy for someone like Nuala but a perfect start into this kind of world. She was okay with it and quickly went on her merry way. Since Nuala was already familiar with the rune knight quarters, becoming invisible and finding the place that was relevant for her current mission didn’t take long. The rune knights who had been assigned here weren’t any of the higher ranks anyways, it was mostly a group of 5 young knights who were given a smaller task probably to teach them something.

Nuala found their shared office and she also found all the notes, documents, files and whatnot that they had on Ivana’s gang. The room had a fireplace, which was almost ironic, but it was the perfect tool for what Nuala intended to do. She gathered all of the paper documents and one by one burned them in the big fire. It took a while, but she arrived her at night time so no one was out to catch here. Once it was done, she broke a bit of the furniture in the room to leave a message they would understand and also broke the window, through which she ended up escaping. Afterwards, Nuala returned to the bar the next day where she met with Ivana again. She notified Nuala that her work had already been observed by one of her fellow gang members and she was paid a nice sum of money for her work. She was also allowed to return whenever she needed more work, as Ivana was certain that there would be more things to do for her. Nuala was satisfied with that and after collecting the money from the lady, she returned to her inn for the day.
