Nuala had arrived in Era the previous night and decided to spend the day away from familiar faces. Instead, the demon thought about finding some work for a change. The central cities of Fiore were big and busy, with lots of different people – any of which could probably use her help for some coin. At this point in her life, Nuala knew where she had to go in order to find that kind of work and even though the demon was no longer associated with any dark guilds, doing purely good deeds was still not on her plate. It was honestly way too soon for that, so she went for what she knew for now. It was noon when she left her residence and headed down the streets by foot, walking until she arrived at the downtown area of the city. Here, she would come across alleys and corners with all sorts of booths, bars and residencies that were frequented by people much like her. People who were looking for work and people who, in return, had work to offer. She didn’t think these places were on the Radar of the Rune Knights either, as the police usually had more pressing matters to attend to.

When Nuala found what appeared to be a fitting establishment, she entered without a second thought and seated herself by the bar. The demon was dressed entirely in black, with a cloak covering most of her appearance. Nuala pulled back the hood and ordered something simple, non-alcoholic, to drink before she allowed for her eyes to wander. There were a few people around, most of which looked exactly like you would expect for a run down place like this. Still, that didn’t have to mean anything. Most law abiding citizens didn’t bother with the lowest classes, and it was easier like this: not sticking out and not appearing like you had any sort of schemes going on. Some time passed before she was finally approached by someone, although that whole ordeal happened rather indirectly. Someone sat down next to her, even though other seats were free, and while in any other bar this could be taken as a sign of interest, it was a different type of interest that was conveyed in this action this time around. Nuala passed the man next to her a smile, allowing him to speak if so he wished.

He was a ragged looking person, with deep dark circles and even darker eyes. His beard hadn’t been cleanly shaved in some time and he wore a hat and winter clothes, even though the weather wasn’t all that cold yet. There was a smell of alcohol coming off of him and Nuala couldn’t help but assume that he was most likely a vagabond, living on the streets of Era. However, often times, those were the people that build the bridge between those who needed something, and those who could offer it. A middle man, if you want to call it that. This seemed to be the case here, because when he turned to Nuala, he had a look of determination on his look. “My circle tells me you are looking for work,” he began and the woman nodded. “Right, anything will do at this point. I just need some coin and an opportunity to find my way around this place.” She hadn’t spent much time in Era lately, so now was a good opportunity to re-familiarize herself with one of the larger cities of the country. The man, who eventually introduced himself as Keito, was indeed a middle man for these type of shadier jobs.

He slid a piece of paper across the table and Nuala picked it up to inspect it. This was the business card of a rest home here in Era – a place where the elderly would live out their days with some assistance from hired personel to help them with daily tasks that most relatives simply didn’t have the time for. It did cost some money, but overall it seemed like a very useful establishment for mere mortals and humans, who simply needed a place to stay when they got older. It wasn’t exactly a crime hotspot, or one that you would expect, but Nuala could see how there was a lot of potential for all the elderly to be abused. Considering the establishment itself, it was most likely an inside job as well. It wasn’t exactly her definition of a usually job, but Nuala could sneak into some place and steal some info, especially if that place was crowded with old people. The contents of the mission were quickly explained and Nuala went on her merry way. The rest home wasn’t all too far from her current location, and once she arrived, she realized that there was indeed tight security at the doors.

That much security for a bunch of elderly people was, in itself, already suspicious. Security cost a lot of money too and if the head of the rest home had that much to spare, clearly there was something shady going on. Not being interested in entering the rest home itself, Nuala decided to do what she does best: stalk down the person who was most likely responsible for all of this and get some answers from them. Dr. Perta was the leading medical head of the rest home and he had some very interesting things going on. He would show up early and leave at night and Nuala decided to use that gap, where he was inside the rest home, to stalk him a little bit and learn more about what he did with his time. Dr. Perta’s home was easily broken into and Nuala used her sneaking and lockpicking skills to snoop around a bit in his personal belongings. Quickly, she confirmed that the Doctor was ordering narcotics on a regular basis, drugging the elderly people in the rest home in order to get access to their wealth and belongings, before he would finish them off once he was done with them.

That is also why relatives didn’t have any access to them. Interesting, and rather gruesome for something as innocent as an elderly rest home. But that also made the case very clear: the doctor had to go. This was perhaps the easiest part of the quest for an assassin like Nuala. She waited for Dr. Perta to come home before she assaulted him, quietly and stealthily, making sure not to leave any clues behind as she beheaded him and returned to Keito with her evidence of success. Nuala found this to be an almost extreme way of dealing with what was otherwise a rather small criminal, but re-thinking the situation from a different perspective, it could also be that Dr. Perta was technically a serial killer with an incredibly high body count at this rate, which is why it was probably for the best that he was entirely gone. Keito seemed very satisfied with this result and she figured that he was probably working for someone whose relative was stuck in that rest home. He did pay Nuala a very generous sum of money, for something that only took a day of observation and they departed on good terms.
