The sun shined brightly throughout Xerxes’ room as he opens his slowly opens his eyes. These were his final days in the northern part of Fiore and he spent the majority of it getting everything ready and tying up all loose ends. Honestly, all Xerxes wanted to do was lay in bed and sleep but he knew that things needed to be done. After finishing up and preparing to meet Leon at their storefront again, a knock at his door disturbs him. “I wonder who that might be?” he says inquisitively as he moves towards the door.

Opening it, he sees a fellow Sleeping Calamity member standing before him with an envelope in hand. “Hey Xerxes, sorry to bother you but you have mail.” Upon picking up the envelope, Xerxes immediately recognizes the design and handwriting. It was something from back home. Thanking his fellow comrade, he quickly closes the door and places the envelope on the table. It had been so long since he had seen or even spoken to his family. He wondered, just what was going on that they would message him. Looking at the time, Xerxes leaves the letter without opening it, promising to do so when he returns.

“So how do you feel about fighting?” Leon says as he sees the Desiertian entering the storefront. “I don’t mind a good skirmish.” Xerxes says as he greets all in the area. Leon smirks as he shakes his hand and eases into his seat. “While I would prefer that you be Yuka’s teacher, I know someone in your…line of work won’t be the best teacher for him in the grand scheme of things. Not to mention that you’ve discussed going west. So, if not you, then I’ll need the best. There is an underground tournament happening tonight and the reigning, undefeated champion, Tenchi Kaguroma, is participating. If you beat him, he’ll do whatever task you ask of him. I need you to have him train Yuka here in your stead.” A smile quickly spreads across the Desiertian’s face as he relishes the opportunity to engage in combat against some hardened challengers. He figured that this would be the perfect opportunity to leave Orchidia with a bang. “So, where do I sign up?”

The Desiertian makes his way to the streets of Orchidia, intently following the directions Leon gave him. ‘In the alley behind the bar, look for two oversized buffoons guarding a door. Give them this pass and they’ll let you in.' Xerxes remembers his benefactor say. As he passes the bar and heads down the alley, he sees the two men that Leon spoke of guarding the door. They were both dressed in all white, a sure sign that this was the place. As the Desiertian approaches, the two men perk up and come near him. “Can we help you with something?” the leftmost guard says. Wordlessly, Xerxes grabs the pass from his pocket and hands it to him. The man looks it over intently and glances at his cohort who nods in approval. “Good Luck.” He says gruffly as they allow Xerxes to move inside. The man walks inside, seeing the dingy pathway leading to the locker room.

Eleven other individuals sat around the locker room as Xerxes made his way to the sign in table and signs in his name. The attendant grabs the sheet and glances up towards Xerxes. “So, you are Sharyar Xerxes? Leon spoke highly of you. Even said that you were going to win and bid a crazy amount to back it up. The champ is undefeated so I doubt that but I’ve never seen him so confident. He didn’t even show up to watch.” Xerxes smirks at Leon’s brazenness and takes his seat, eager to see if anyone here will pose a challenge.

The roar of the crowd fills Xerxes with an odd sense of enjoyment, a feeling that he had not felt in quite some time. It was a rush, a rush of euphoria that the Desiertian could not get enough of. The crowd roared in anticipation as they chanted his name, the unknown underdog advancing to the finals to face the champion himself. Xerxes had easily made his way through the tournament brackets, decimating all who challenged him. Attempting to give himself a handicap, Xerxes refused to use Jotunn’s Fang, opting to deal with each individual in close quarters combat. Weapons, magic, all of it was used on him but his opponents never even touched him. The most recent victim, a user of a snake takeover magic, fell in a single combo. Normally, the Desiertian would have been upset that each person he fought went down as easily as they did, but the rush of excitement he felt more than made up for it. Now it was time for the final showdown, the long-awaited confrontation with Tenchi Kaguroma.

Tenchi enters the ring to an uproar of screams, all chants now reverting to his name. The man takes it in stride as he confidently walks right up to Xerxes. Xerxes gives him a quick once over, realizing that the man much like himself, was unarmed. “So, you are the one everyone is talking about. Been waiting to fight you. So, tell me. What is that you are fighting for? You won’t win but I’m always interested to hear what my opponents want.”

“I’ll tell you after you lose.” Xerxes says with a coy smile. Tenchi smirks and moves back, readying himself for the bell to ring. The loud ring of the bell echoes as the roar of the crowd increases in volume. Tenchi darts towards Xerxes with surprising quickness as he attempts to deliver a flurry of jabs aimed at the man’s head. Inwardly, Xerxes compliments the speed of the strikes, noting that his speed and power were miles about the others that he faced that evening. Leon’s assessment of Tenchi being a perfect trainer for Yuka was spot on. Unfortunately, Xerxes knew that he would not find a suitable challenge in the man.

He continues to strike, each strike becoming faster and faster, greatly impressing Xerxes. However, he needed to end the fight quickly. As Tenchi throws his last punch, Xerxes pivots and delivers a right hook square to the man’s jaw. Instantly, Tenchi slumps down, his limp body unconscious before it even hits the ground. A dull silence befalls the crowd as their undefeated champion lays motionless from a single punch. The ringing bell provide noise from the silence as Xerxes walks away, stopping just shy of the ref. “When he wakes up and after he’s checked out by the physicians, tell him to meet me in the back. I’ll let him know what I want.” He says before departing. The Desiertian sits in the locker room for about an hour before Tenchi enters holding an ice pack towards his jaw. His face gave off a humbled look as he sat across from Xerxes.

“Knocked me out in a single punch. I gotta admit, I was wrong about you. You are one powerful son of a bitch.” He says as he extends a hand to shake. Xerxes reciprocates the shake as he asks Tenchi to follow him to Leon’s storefront. The two walk in relative silence as they enter the store, Leon counting the jewels he just won with a smile on his face. He greets the two warmly before he explains his request towards Tenchi whose face lights up at the prospect.

Initially looking for a disciple, and interested by someone whose potential Xerxes approves of, Tenchi readily accepts. “Wonderful! Both of you come back by here and we’ll start. Xerxes, my friend, thank you. Here’s your pay, you won most of this anyway!” Leon says as he passes the large pouch of jewels towards him. Thanking him for the payment, Xerxes leaves, interested to see what tomorrow would bring.
