It was no secret that Atani preferred to be alone. It was not just true of herself as a person, but it even extended to the behavior of most of her kind. Wood Elves were known to be a rather seclusive race. It was known that they often shied away from humans, but even then it wasn't uncommon for elves within the borders of their own cities to go about their day with little conversation. They savored the quiet and embraced the serenity it brought alongside it. It allowed them to open their ears to the noises that often went ignored from day to day. In doing so, it opened up their hearts and minds in a way.

Atani was no stranger to the practice of isolation. Both willingly and unwillingly, she had done it time and time again. On this particular occasion, she desired to distance herself from others once more.

In the past, she had done this out of fear. Fear of hurting those she cared about most. She spoke in length with LeeAnn, her previous guild master and good friend, about this. Though Lee insisted Atani had nothing to be afraid of, she couldn't help but think that her friend was just trying to make her feel better without understanding the scope of the situation. Atani knew what she was capable of; Lee didn't. For the safety of her guild, she went away.

But of course, that was all in the past.

That same fear was not the reason for her solitary journey to Marchen Mountains. She was going on this trip for herself, not for others. It would not be terribly long, for Atani loathed the cold, but it would be just long enough for the elf to see the sorts of results she wanted. In a sense, she was there to train.

It was interesting. Though she rarely trained with other beings like her, she still rarely trained alone. There were always animals or spirits of sorts by her side through it all, both of which she had the ability to converse with. They kept better company than people who she sometimes struggled to connect with. Yes, even with her fellow Wood Elves conversations could feel awkward and unnatural. But animals, they didn't judge. They were motivated by pure instinct, and their instincts often told them that Atani was a friend to be trusted. Only in the desolate Marchen Mountains, critters were few and far between.

Despite her hatred for the cold and her discomfort for being totally alone, Atani chose this mountain range as a training destination for that reason exactly. There were just some things that had to be done on one's own; she was sure of that, and there was only one way to test her theory.

What sort of theory one may ask. Well in part, she supposed, it had to do with her magic. Though it had always been healing based in nature, it seemed to change and grow with her. She found, lost, and regained elements of all sorts. She unearthed its dormant ability to damage others. And of course, she grew stronger. Sometimes in leaps and bounds, sometimes in little steps. What she sought in the Marchen Mountains wasn't necessarily one or the other. On that note, she didn't quite care if she could physically feel the results of the voyage or not. What she hoped to achieve was more internal. Something with the mind and the spirit, if you will. She'd been telling herself she needed this for a while now, but she needed clarity. Every time Atani thought she could give herself some time to work on that, some emergency would come her way.

But here in the mountains, she'd be damned if something came up to call her back down to civilization. Now, nothing short of divine intervention could interrupt this something of a personal quest. With her solitude secured, all that was left to do was to venture onward and hope that something would come along.

Truth be told, Atani went into the mountains with no concrete plan in mind for exactly what to do or where to go. She knew only enough of the place to know what to bring, what to wear-- essentially, how to ensure her safety on this trip in the same way a mountain climber would. Beyond that, she would let fate guide her way. In the meantime, she would trudge through the snow.

There was definitely something uniquely magic about the Marchen Mountains. If you paid close enough attention, you could feel it in the air.

Like a slight tingle, a hazy fuzz you could feel just barely inside the brain. It was uncommon to have that sensation in most parts of Fiore, at least in the parts she most often visited. City development often put a damper on that raw magic feel. That's not to say it removed magic from the environment, but it got converted into something more subtle to fit the needs of people. It wasn't bad in any sense of the word, but it did sometimes make it harder for Atani to dig back into her roots without having to take long trips such as this.

As time passed, some snow began to come down. Atani didn't mind it at first. She simply continued on while meditating on some long neglected thoughts. Eventually, however, the snowfall became thicker and the visibility became far worse. The Wood Elf was no expert on blizzards, but she wagered now was a good time to find shelter.
