Tsukishima Higurashi
The shrill sounds of screams fill the area as people ran in all directions, unknowingly and uncaringly trampling the bodies of the fallen underfoot. Sweat poured down their faces as they moved their bodies well beyond its limits. They did not care how much their bodies screamed at them to rest, they needed to get away. They had to get away. Xerxes could only look at the surrounding sights in absolute horror. Blood stained the ground so much that one could say that it was painted on. So much destruction, so much unnatural carnage. There were so many injured or worse that he lost count. What laid before him was paramount to hell on earth. All that was missing was the hellfire raining down from the skies. Even during his mercenary days, Xerxes had never seen such a level of violence, nor had he ever caused anything to this magnitude. This was truly what he likened it to, hell.

Tsukishima Higurashi
Monsters, particularly giants, have invaded Orchidia and began their swath of destruction. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason for their appearance. It was a normal, relatively quiet day in Orchidia. The sun was shining brightly, and things were business as usual. When the first bellowing roar was heard, everyone was taken aback. It wasn’t until the appearance of the first wide-eyed gargantuan that the severity of what this day would bring really hit home.

After that, every corner seemed to be flooded with blood and broken bodies. This, obviously, led to a call to arms for all Sleeping Calamity members to come together and defend their town from this threat. They had been split up to defend the major areas of the city and to protect and evacuate the civilians. Xerxes had been partnered in a group of ten comprised equally of mages and non-mages. The man had not been in Orchidia for very long, but he considered the members of this guild family and the town his home. He would not sit idly by and allow his home to be destroyed.

“This way! Don’t stop to look back, just keep running!” Xerxes says as he waves towards the fleeing citizens as they attempt to cram into the last available trains. They shove and squeeze their way inside as the look of dread and fear spread across many of their faces. Though they were relieved that they made it into the train, they knew they were not in the clear just yet. Xerxes went over to assist other Sleeping Calamity members as they ushered in the last of the citizens. Reuniting families, quickly and calmly reassuring loved ones that the worst was over. None of this should have happened today. Xerxes wondered just what caused this catastrophe.

Carrying a little girl in his arms, Xerxes runs up to an awaiting mother and reunites her with her child before getting them into the last comfortable spot on the train. “I think that should be the last of them. Do you guys see any more?” Xerxes says to his nearest guildmates. The man glances over and sees two of the guildmates with mouths agape, staring to the area behind them. Booming footsteps echo as the screams of the citizens increase in pitch. To his horror, he sees two massive behemoths walk towards the trains. “Shit…” he mutters.

The one to the left had short, shaggy hair and held the remains of a massive tree in its hand, swinging it haphazardly like a club. It easily dwarfed the small buildings in the area. Its steely grey eyes had a vacant stare as it moved closer. The other was slightly shorter than its accomplice and, while unarmed, was covered in blood that Xerxes knew full well was not its own as it dripped from its maw. Some of the blood got into its blonde hair, giving it a muted dirty color. The giants had taken notice of the fleeing civilians and sought to have a meal. Springing into action, Xerxes removes his spear from its sheath and prepares himself. “All non-mages, your main objective is to ensure the safety of the town. We need to defend the civilians at all costs until the train leaves. As for the mages, whatever tools or magic you have at your disposal to take down one of the beasts. I’ll handle the other.”

Wordlessly, the group nods and begin to either help escort or assault the rightmost giant with a barrage of spells. One was a fire-make user as he pelted the giant with javelins comprised of flames. Two others were lightning users, one of the normal variations while the other was a user of black lightning. The final two mages were both ice and water mages respectively. The five mages shot off their magic towards the blonde-haired giant, easily garnering its attention with their assault. The giant roared in pain as it attempted to move towards the group to devour them. Normally, Xerxes would have sneered at the display, but this was neither the place nor the time. Seeing the leftmost giant attempt to help its comrade, Xerxes tosses a piece of fallen debris towards its head in a successful attempt to have its attention directed squarely onto him. “Come on big boy. Let’s see if you can give me a challenge.”

Tsukishima Higurashi
Giants were known to be beasts with nearly unfathomable strength. They ranged in size from being as tall as a small building to having that same building only come to its ankles. They were nigh unkillable with insane regenerative powers. Rumor has it that they could even be decapitated and would still be just as terrifying as if nothing ever happened to them. Though magic users would likely be able to wear them down from afar, as proven by the other group, fighting one as a non-mage would be tantamount to suicide. The two that bore in front of them did not have the unimaginable height as others, but their figure was just as imposing. Xerxes figured that this would be the best way to both push himself in combat and to show to the other guild members to most effective way to combat this threat. Deciding to make the first move, Xerxes charges towards the armed giant with a determined flare in his eyes.

When coming in close proximity to the giant, the man leaps up and swings his staff as hard as he could towards the giant’s chest. The strike made a solid thud as the giant looked at the man unphased. Xerxes moves back, completely in awe that his strike did nothing. A strike of that magnitude would have completely caved in any normal human’s chest without a second thought. Xerxes had to remind himself, however, that what he was up against was no human. He glances to the right, seeing that the quintet of mages was beginning to wear down their target with their multitude of attacks. Streaks of fire, lightning, and water danced through the sky as the giant’s roars of pain and irritation grew in intensity.

“I can’t let them show me up.” Xerxes chuckles to himself as he begins to assault the beast once more. Dashing in once more, Xerxes attempts to change his tactics to see which area would hurt the beast the most. He started at front and back of the knee, hoping that their similar physiology to humanoid creatures meant that their legs were a weak point.

His strikes, both with the blunt and bladed edges of his spear, were deliberate and precise. Each strike was aimed to disable, hitting what would be considered weak points on a human. Each strike felt as if he was hitting a solid mass of steel. At best, some of the attacks managed to slightly push the behemoth back. At worst, some of the attacks didn’t even phase him. It was akin to an ant bite. Finally becoming irritated by the display, the giant merely backhands Xerxes away, sending him flying a few meters back. The man skids against the ground, coming to a stop just to the side of the soon to be departing train.

He could feel blood freely trickling down his right arm, the first time he had drawn blood in quite some time. “Amusing…” he says as he gets back up on his feet. He twirls his staff slightly and turns towards the quintet of comrades who were nearly finishing up with their giant. “Finish up with that one and go with the civilians. They’ll need protection just in case something even worse is at the end of the tracks. Don’t worry about me. I’m beginning to have some fun.”

Briefly reassuming his fighting position, Xerxes once again charges towards the giant with blade pointed. When he gets close, he leaps up with the intention of stabbing the beast directly in the heart. Effortlessly, the creature grabs ahold of his staff, inadvertently stabbing itself in the hand. A roar of pain escapes the behemoth’s mouth as it slams both the weapon and Xerxes himself on the ground. The Desiertian manages to land on his feet as he moves back. “So, it seems that cutting works. Now, let’s find the best place to cut.” He says with a smile.

The giant roars as it attempts to slam the makeshift club in its hand towards Xerxes in an attempt to kill him, no longer preferring to devour the man entirely. The man quickly dodges the strike as the tree trunk slams on the ground, the reverberating boom echoes throughout the city. Thinking quickly, he climbs and runs along the tree as he reaches the giant’s hand. A quick swipe and parts of the giant’s fingers fall to the ground, more blood staining the ground. The giant roars in pain as it stumbles backwards, Xerxes continuing forward with his assault.

With each strike the Desiertian delivered, another part of the giant’s body falls down to the ground. Fingernails, fingers, a hand, forearm, all of it lands on the ground coated in blood. Xerxes begins to lose himself in the thrill of the fight, each strike becoming more and more precise by the second. He had not lost himself to his extent in quite some time. The feeling of pushing himself further was nothing short of euphoric. After the entire arm is removed, Xerxes begins to work on the legs to finally remove the giant’s surprising mobility.

The giant begins to stomp around in a futile effort to prevent Xerxes from achieving his goal, but the man continued undeterred. Two quick, precise swipes and the once seemingly invincible giant topples over now removed of its ankles. Xerxes continued his methodical assault, one powerful swipe after the other until the giant’s entire body lay in pieces. The creature’s eyes glare at Xerxes in defiance before the light slowly drains from its eyes.

Xerxes glances at his handiwork, seeing the giant’s severed body and the wide eyes of his non-mage guild members still shocked by their comrade’s display of power. “And that is how you take out one of these beasts without the use of powers.” He says proudly as he watches the quintet of finally reduce their foe to ashes with their combined powers. He quickly shakes the blood off of the bladed tip of his spear and sheathes it before fully regrouping with his guildmates.

“The worst seems to be over for the moment. We need to get out of here before another group of these beasts come back. We should likely split up. Two mages and two non-mages go with the train. The rest of us will go and make sure that the rest of the city is safe. With at least one mage and one non-mage in a group, we can handle these creatures more efficiently this way. We’ll meet up with the rest of the guild at the Guild House once this madness is over with.” The group nods and head to their respective positions as Xerxes and his group heads deeper into the city. While he handled the creature with relative ease, he silently wished that this day would be over with.
