Nuala Nazari was quietly hushing through the streets of Oak Town. This place wasn’t something she had frequented often in the past, but come to think of it now she actually kind of liked it here. It was gloomy and dark all the time and somehow reminded her of Dahlia, even though it was much less run down than that. Nuala hadn’t been in Dahlia for a year or so now and ever since their guild had disbanded, she didn’t think of returning there. It was a city crowded with non-human entities and while she wasn’t exactly human herself anymore, she still felt different from all the werewolves and vampires roaming those streets. Not to mention all the cults! Oak was a bit more civilized than that and the massive castle standing at the top of the hill added a nice touch to the town’s atmosphere and ambiente. Of course Oak Town wasn’t a tourist hot spot either, which made staying here even easier for the woman. She wanted to recollect herself for now, since the events of the previous year had left her shaken and confused. There was a lot to be worked through here, but she would take it slowly. Nuala was alone again, but that didn’t really bother her: she had grown used to it by now.

The woman had used her last resources to restock her inventory a bit. She had bought a few items, such as combat clothes and armor, that she had never used before. It hadn’t made sense with whom she used to be and the way she used to work things out, but the times had changed and so had Nuala. Protecting herself came first and she had bought a bunch of items with her savings that would surely serve her well. Of course her trusty daggers were still at her side: that part of her would surely never change. Nuala had never been comfortable with the idea of using magic and even though she had been able to use a little bit in the past, in one way or another, she was fine being a normal person compared to all the sorcerers in the country. Of course there were simply a lot of them in Fiore, but it was different everywhere you went. By the time Nuala had arrived in Oak, she had been thinking about her next step already and a few things had conspired since then. Initially, she had come here because it was a quiet place and away from all the trouble.

There was a quest that eventually caught her attention however and Nuala picked up the flyer and started to read what it was saying. Apparently the local church had been struggling with ghosts and spirits haunting the local folk. That certainly sounded ridiculous at first, but Nuala knew better than most that all sorts of weird creatures existed in this world and she was really in no position to question any of it. With a sigh, she put the flyer in her pocket and headed to the church to talk to the pastor about it. What happened next would prove difficult for her to manage, but she decided to stay out of the church for more or less obvious reasons. Oakland Church was a large building that was still frequently visited by the citizens of this town and it seemed that the menace with the spirits and ghosts lying beneath it was bothering all of them. Speaking to the pastor, Nuala found out that he didn’t really care what happened to the spirits and whether they were exorcised in a proper way or simply cast away into the afterlife. As long as he was rid of them she would get paid and honestly, Nuala could live with that.

The pay itself was great actually. It was a ton of money for what seemed to be a simple job and Nuala couldn’t wait to get started. There was nothing in particular she was trying to buy at this time, but she was a girl after all and girls always found something to spend their money on sooner or later. The spirits were located in the catacombs beneath the church and upon accepting the quest, Nuala was granted access to that place. Apparently it wasn't as if they came out during the day, even though you couldn’t really tell the difference from down there. Since it was still daytime she figured she would spend some time in town before heading back to the church as it got darker. Nuala didn’t really know how to kill any of the spirits yet, but figured that her daggers would do the job. It wasn’t as though she had any other options and she believed that the pastor would have said something if there was something else to be considered, such as the usage of magic. Nuala was strolling around Oak Town then and walked by a few of the shops, none of which were selling anything of interest. The sun was slowly going down and at some point it was time to head back to the church.

The pastor had closed up already and it seemed that he wasn’t expecting anyone else for the evening. It was better that way since Nuala could get to work easily like that. She hadn’t really put much thought into it up until now but she thought that perhaps entering the catacombs below the church would give her some time to think things through. Nuala was simple like that and she enjoyed dark places underground so this was pretty much perfect for her. She was given a key with which she opened a large metal door that led down a stairway and into the catacombs. It was all in all pretty dusty and covered in spiderwebs but the former Voidling wouldn’t mind. She was used to this kind of stuff and generally speaking not grossed out by a lot of things. As a thief she didn’t really have the luxury to choose pretty places to break into anyways so this wasn’t a problem. At the bottom of the stairs was another door for which Nuala had received a second key. She opened the door and entered the catacombs. It was dark inside, with a few torches lit and hanging on the wall. Nuala wondered who kept the torches lit, but it was probably magic.

At first, Nuala couldn’t hear anything except her own steps. There was the rustling of the flames that lit up the entire corridor that she was now walking through. The stench in the air reminded her of dusty old tombs, so it fitted the atmosphere rather well. All in all, there was nothing suspicious just yet and definitely no spirits. Nuala didn’t feel the need to take any of the torches for now, since it seemed that she could see ahead just enough with her own eyesight. It was quiet down here and she couldn’t hear anything from upstairs. The woman supposed that being trapped down here in a place like this was certainly bad news, but she didn’t want to think too much about this. She had been trapped in worse places after all. Once she had moved through the corridor, there was a gate that could be pulled up using a chain mechanism. It felt a bit crafty and kinda ancient to have something like that downhere, but she supposed that the church existed for a long time and that’s why something like that existed here. Anyways, Nuala pulled on the chain and the gate slowly lifted up. It wasn’t particularly heavy for someone like her but she didn’t think someone like the pastor could lift it up easily.

Behind the gate, the smell of the area was changing already. The air was moist and she could feel a gush of air on her skin. There was probably some way back to the surface from here on and if she had guessed correctly, then somewhere in this direction ahead of her lay the graveyard of Oak Town. It made sense considering that this was the church’s property and areas like that were always connected. There was still no sign of any ghosts and spirits but the atmosphere had definitely changed and Nuala armed herself with one of her daggers in her left hand. She was quick on her feet so she didn’t think she could be snuck up on, but she had to prepare herself for every situation. The pastor had mentioned that the catacombs went way deep into the ground and this was pretty much it. In fact, Nuala couldn’t shake the unwell feeling that she was about to get jumped any minute: call it instincts or something like that, but the woman ended up being right in a sense. She could hear a moaning sound - and not the good kind - coming from the end of the large hall that lay behind the corridor. Here, there were the catacombs. Filled with old bones and broken souls from probably centuries ago.

Nuala had no desire to fulfill any last wishes or help these phantoms find their final resting place. The thought that all of them were older than her even though she was immortal and quite old for a human was astonishing, but at the same time Nuala knew that in an immortal sense, she really wasn’t old at all. Her age was perhaps unexpected, but nothing out of the ordinary. She definitely had met way older beings before and the aura they carried themselves with was certainly different. Still, being young was a good thing and she didn't mind it. Nuala saw the first phantom when she walked past one of the many graves. It was a meager looking ghost and even though she could only see its shape and form and not its gender or anything else that might identify it as a person. The spirit wasn’t attacking so Nuala didn’t move to attack either. She simply looked at it and it was kind of just standing there and wobbling around. She doubted that whatever that thing was doing was somehow a comfortable existence and even though the creature clearly meant no harm, she figured it was best to try and see if she could actually use her daggers to dispose of them. With a quick and clean cut, she hurled her weapon at the spirit and watched as it dispersed into a thousand tiny white particles. By the looks of it she could dispose of spirits using her daggers just fine. That was good news at least.

It was then, when she had destroyed the first phantom, that she could feel a real shift in the air. Apparently her actions had inspired others to come out as well and she could feel by the vibe they were giving off, that most of them were conflict driven. Nuala pulled out her second dagger and took a careful look around. there were approximately seven phantoms that she could see at once, but there was a good chance that more would start showing up as she moved on. They were all screaming and groaning now, being very loud and noisy and overall disorienting her with all their yelling. It was an annoying situation to be in and Nuala understood now why something like that would bother the pastor. With how loud they were being, he could probably hear them from the church where he was holding his prayers. Not a nice thing to hear for people who were hoping to connect with god or whatever. It made things a lot easier for the thief and thus she dashed forward and began slicing at the phantoms. Killing them was easy, luckily, and it didn’t seem as though they were looking to come back after she had attacked them. Nuala rushed forward, whirled around with her daggers and sliced at each and single one of them, watching with mild interest as they dispersed into particles of whatever it was they were created from. The more she killed, the quieter it became until finally there was no sound to be heard other than her own heavy panting.

Once Nuala had sliced up the last phantom that she could see, she continued to search the catacombs for more but there were none. Perhaps that was all and there was nothing else to be taken care of. She couldn’t be so sure but from the looks of it it seemed that way. In total, she counted around ten of them. It wasn’t a lot but then again she had no real way to measure their amount or compare it to anything. Her daggers weren’t dirty so she simply stored them back in her outfit and decided to head back upstairs to talk to the pastor. At this point not much time had passed since she had gone downhere, because as soon as the sun came down the creatures had started showing up. The way back to the surface felt much longer than before but Nuala was glad to find that none of the doors had been locked behind her and she wasn’t stuck in here or anything. She made sure to close all the doors behind her however to keep the phantoms from coming up should there be more after all. She then went and spoke to the pastor and explained the situation to him. Nuala was glad to learn that the pastor seemed satisfied with her work and was willing to pay her the promised amount of money. Interestingly enough, he also mentioned that she should keep an eye out for the mission board in case new phantoms showed up. Apparently this was a recurring problem and somehow the pastor never ran out of money to pay people to do this kind of work for him.
