Hatsuharu
The duo had been stationed at Crocus gardens that morning for their patrol duty. It was quite late in the morning and since it was the weekend, the garden was a lot more crowded than usual. Most of them were couples or families, with a few occasional lonesome dreamers. This was one of the most favourite locations in Crocus for the healer; the happy people under the lush green trees gave him hope. The capital was recovering, and the people are smiling again. The new ruler was not a ruthless monster as half the population feared him to be. Things started to look better again, at least from Haru’s perspective.

Haru was merrily hopping from one stone to another—which were embedded on the grassy grounds to serve as pathways—with his trademark wide grin on his face. Most patrols were simply a happy stroll around the city, unless they run into the occasional pickpockets or other nuisances. The other couples gave the Rune Knight duo a knowing grin as they walked past. Haru, of course, didn’t think much of it and assumed it was their way of greeting and reciprocated with the same cheesy grins he was receiving, making it look like he was confirming their assumptions.

Among all the genuine smiles and the cheesy ones, there was one particular man who seemed terribly stressed. Haru had seen him before; it was the same Seated Knight that trained young children. Wondering what was distressing the poor man that morning, he approached him to inquire.

Akira Shimada
Akira shuffled along beside a rather hyper Tsuru. She shook her head but cracked a smile at his more child-like ways. Sometimes she yearned to let go like this too, but it would take too much away from the appearance she had carefully wrought. The one that aided her in keeping her distance from people. It was already dwindling, she perfectly donned persona. Her job requirements thwarted her options, her partner's eager ways stole from her isolated ways and now the light inside her, curbed the darkness. At this point, she wasn't sure she could ever succeed in becoming who she was before she joined the force.

Despite his frivolous ways, her partner had a very keen eye to spot the distressed. Even among the bustling crowd, he had noticed that eager Rune Knight who strived to train the next generation. She didn't even flinch when he raced towards the Seated Knight. Akira lazily followed. Her ears would twitch, if they could as she eavesdropped on the conversation that ensued between Hatsuharu and the man he'd gone to aid, out of his compulsion. She wondered if he needed them to fill in and teach again... There wasn't even any point fighting it now, whatever it was, Akira made up her mind to not mock Tsuru for wanting to help, nor complain about the mundanity of the task. Only time would tell if she could stick by it though... It was unlikely.

As Haru approached the distressed man, he noticed that the brunette man was looking at the ground around him with hopeful eyes. “Lost something?” Haru asked, taking a guess with most probable and common occurrence in the gardens. There was always someone who lost something within the gardens; the worst was when they lose rather dull jewellery that won’t even shine under the sun but costs a fortune. It would seem Haru’s guess was right, as Bartholomew looked up and nodded sadly. “Yeah… My sword,” he said bluntly.

The red-haired Rune Knight wanted to ask how he managed to do that, but didn’t bother to. He realized asking that would sound like he was mocking the man or being condescending. The healer had learnt how to deal with people over the few months of his memory. But, he did have to ask for some information if he hoped to help the man find his sword. So, he shot the obvious questions one after another. Where did he last see it, what does the sword look like, was it sheathed, etc. Once Bartholomew answered his questions, he promised the man that he would look for it while he patrols the gardens and walked back to his partner.

“The man lost his sword. Straight, sheathed, and last seen under a tree near the south gate,” he explained. He really didn’t have to say he promised to help; that much was going to be obvious after all the time the two spent together.

He lost his sword?! what kind of a Knight wants to help aid in teaching the next generation of Knights, when he can't even keep his wits about himself, for long enough to not misplace his weapon?! Akira wished she was physically restrained, as she entered the mind of matter battle, to stop herself from marching over to that Bartholomew or whatever his name was and giving him a piece of her mind. He may as well as give up his bold venture, rather than train Knights like himself. She sighed deep and long. At least the healer was sort of efficient when it came to gleaning information now. He was brisk in asking all the right questions.

Akira mentally noted all the information that the man offered. It was silly how Tsuru, despite probably knowing she already had heard the conversation, always summarised for her. Perhaps it was to understand how she felt about the request. She'd sworn she wouldn't complain, but the lunar mage couldn't help it. 'That guy wakes up and trains the aspiring Rune Knights. THAT GUY!' she exclaimed once they were out of earshot. 'He isn't even looking in the right place, he did say he lost it close to the entrance, then what the hell is he doing here?' she demanded, venting to her partner as usual. With that, she began leading the two back towards the entrance to attempt retracing the Knight's steps.

The red-haired Rune Knight didn’t have a reaction except for a shrug for all of Akira’s comments and questions. He couldn’t deny that it was rather irresponsible for someone to lose their weapon. But then, the two had no idea under what circumstances such a thing happened and Haru wasn’t one to judge or jump to conclusions before knowing the full story. “Maybe he just recovered from his illness and is having a bad day,” he said, shrugging again.

As they walked back towards the entrance, Haru kept a close watch on the sides of the pathway and checked the base of every tree that was on their way. He also had to watch out for anyone who was a nuisance to the public in the garden; after all, that was the original reason they were here and he wouldn’t forget his primary duties. Luckily, it was a peaceful morning and allowed him to focus more on finding the lost sword.

Haru had to stray from the stone pathway, walk on the grass and peer through the bushes to see if the sword was misplaced accidentally. While he didn’t find any metallic sword behind the bushes, the expedition educated him on the metaphorical use of the phrase ‘sword in sheath’ quite well. While he should have admonished these people, he just ran away out of embarrassment. He decided he would rather buy the man a new sword than look into another bush for his old one.

Lucky for them, the sword wasn’t in one of the bushes. It was with a puppy, who held it between its teeth and was running around the garden merrily. “Looks like we found our cute thief,” he said, pointing towards the dog.

It was very much like Tsuru to make excuses for incompetencies. So Akira scoffed and inched along after him. She wasn't too interested in giving the man his sword back, maybe without it, he'd refrain from training others. Or perhaps he'd try harder to find it, do so and then take better care of it at least. She noticed the healer peering over the manicured hedges that lined the walls of the garden. 'What the hell would he be doing there?' she called out and asked, but a slightly red-faced Tsuru turned away and didn't quite grace her question with a response. Akira shrugged, clearly, the sword wasn't there, so whatever it was, wasn't worth her time.

The two of them seemed to have noticed the puppy almost together. 'It indeed is a really cute thief.' she joined in, a smile pasting itself on her face. Her tone was still a little critical, however. The man had allowed a canine infant to run away with his sword, which was irresponsible because the dog could have easily hurt himself, or the people around him accidentally. Her worry for the dog peaked as he noticed her and Tsuru watching him and made a sweet soft growling noise, almost teasing the two with the sword. She was rather concerned about him, such a tiny little mouth, the sword must've been heavy, it could easily slip out of his maw's grip and hurt him somewhere.  'He's not going to give up without a chase...' she said softly. She wondered how to approach this, as she stealthily tried getting closer. It if wasn't for the sword, she'd be that creature in her arms in a jiffy.

The puppy was so lost, but still so sure about what it wanted. Haru tried luring the little one towards them with the bit of snacks he had with him, but the dog was not interested in food at all. “Warrior puppy,” he said, giggling at the canine as it completely ignored the food offer and proceeded to run away with the sword still between its teeth. Haru couldn’t help but laugh as Akira tried to be stealthy and catch up with the running puppy. “He already knows we are after him,” he said, before dashing past her and towards the target.

Haru knew the only way to catch this one was to trap it into a corner. The puppy was fast, but not fast enough. Instead of pouncing on the puppy, he ran ahead of it and diverted it towards the stony pathway where Akira was. With the two of them on both its sides, the puppy knew he had no way to escape and dropped the sword. It looked up at Haru and attempted to bark, but only managed to squeal. Kneeling slowly, Haru picked up the sword and put it out of the puppy’s reach before petting it.

Just like how Haru gets grumpy and then almost instantly forgets about it, the puppy too forgot about the sword and began enjoying the attention it received. Haru smiled, wondering if he will stay as simple or if the world will change him over time. After petting the dog for quite a long while, the healer offered the snack to it again, and this time it was more than happy to take it and run away. Once the puppy was out of sight, it was time to return the sword to its owner and request him to take better care of it.

'Fine then, you can get that blasted sword all by yourself... Okay?!' Akira whined as Hatsuharu teased her, nonetheless she followed the man towards the fluffy little creature. The puppy's attempts at playfully growling at his followers was commendable. The little thing was really in it to win it. 'TSURU!' she yelled, flinching and wincing as he leaped. She covered her eyes, there were so many reasons why that could have become a horrible mess. The puppy could've been crushed under Tsuru, the sword could have cut either of them... Luckily nothing happened. She made a note to yell at her partner for taking such a risk.

At this point she couldn't give a damn about the sword, she just wanted to take it away from the creature because it was an accident waiting to happen. She still approached the furry little thing carefully, but when the baby beast realized that he had Akira on one side and Tsuru on the other he guiltily dropped the weapon and mewled. While Tsuru took care of the things that the request required, Aki kneeled next to the puppy to befriend it. Within moments, the canine was all over her. She laughed and giggled as it licked her nose and proceeded to playfully lick her entire face. She scratched behind the creature's ears and held him in her arms, cuddling him fondly. Animals really brought out the best in her... If only people were as innocent as them...
