Kamui
Before the grand entrance of the Oakland Church, Kamui, a formidable figure in battle-worn armour, stood with stoic determination. The towering spires of the church seemed to pierce the heavens, casting a shadow over the anticipation of the challenging quest ahead. Clutching her katana, Kamui's primary motivation was the promise of a good fight and much-needed travelling funds. On her shoulder, Mami, a small blue cheagle with large cute eyes, had a different perspective—a desire to aid souls in distress.

"Mami, we are not here to play saviour. I took this job for a fight, not to attend to spirits," Kamui stated in her formal, brief manner, attempting to dismiss the persistent urging from her tiny companion.

The church, with its Gothic elegance and ominous grandeur, loomed overhead. As they entered, the atmosphere shifted from daylight to the dimly lit interior, laden with history and echoes of departed souls.

Beneath the church, the catacombs formed a labyrinth of stone passages adorned with ancient carvings and flickering torches. Mami, sensing ethereal energies, nudged Kamui gently. "These spirits need our help, Master. We can't ignore their suffering," it urged, its voice filled with childlike compassion. Kamui just ignored the cheagle for now.

As they descended into the catacombs, the air grew colder, and faint whispers echoed through the tunnels. The catacombs opened into vast chambers adorned with ancient tombs and ornate crypts. Spirits, both evil and sorrowful, flickered in and out of existence. Kamui, unimpressed by the ethereal spectacle, readied her katana. "Let's get this over with, Mami. The faster we clear this place, the sooner we get paid," she declared.

The first spirit appeared—a figure in tattered robes, its eyes reflecting centuries of agony. Mami hopped off Kamui's shoulder and approached with a gentle demeanour. "What happened to you? We can help, pretty pretty, please??" Mami offered, its voice soothing but childish.

Ignoring Mami's attempts at communication, Kamui charged forward, her katana slashing through the spirit. The air filled with echoes of a distant, mournful wail. Mami looked at Kamui with exaggerated disappointment, its tiny face scrunched up in a pout. Kamui just shook her head at the cheagle. It was weak, and these spirits had evil auras, one that only priests or paladins could soothe. As it was, the two would only be in danger if the spirits were not swiftly put down.

But Mami persisted in its attempts to understand and console the spirits, while Kamui saw them only as obstacles to be eliminated. The catacombs echoed with the clashing of Kamui's blade and Mami's comedic attempts at soothing words.

In the heart of the catacombs, a grand chamber unfolded—a burial site for long-forgotten people of Oak's past. Phantoms of ancient men and women wandered aimlessly, their spirits trapped by some unseen force. Sensing their deep despair, Mami pleaded with Kamui to reconsider her approach, which Kamui solemnly refused. Then she put the cheagle down, pulled out her sword, and rushed forward to fight.

With each swing of Kamui's katana, the catacombs underwent a transformation. Malevolent spirits dissipated into the ether, and the sorrowful found solace, their flickering forms gradually fading away. The grand chamber, once filled with echoes of despair, now echoed with a serene stillness.

As they stood in the now-peaceful chamber, Mami looked at Kamui with hopeful eyes, a silent plea for acknowledgment of their joint efforts. Kamui, ever the stoic warrior, approached Mami and spoke in her usual formal manner.

"Mami, these spirits were bound by ancient grievances. Our actions provided them a release, but true peace is something they must find on their own," Kamui explained, her words carrying the weight of experience.

Mami, though disappointed, nodded in understanding. It hopped onto Kamui's shoulder, a gesture that spoke of camaraderie in the face of a shared journey. The unlikely duo turned to leave the catacombs, their footsteps echoing through the now-silent chambers.

Kamui
As they emerged into the dimly lit entrance of the Oakland Church, Mami looked at Kamui with a hint of curiosity. Kamui, sensing the unspoken question, simply said, "We did what we could, Mami. Sometimes, that's all we can do."

Outside, the sunlight painted the world in hues of warmth as Kamui and Mami received their reward. Mami, despite its disappointment in the inability to save every soul, chirped cheerfully. Kamui, true to her strong and silent nature, accepted the reward with a nod, while Mami gave a loud cheer before the two wandered to their next job.

Travelling with Mami was still new (those damn good mages who shackled her to this little being) but not... terrible. She was unused to having such an innocent little creature accompanying her. She had to watch her actions, words and decisions more now, which was inconvenient. But for now, she would continue to travel with this companion of hers.
