Khalfani †

Back in Desierto like they never left. It was always a good thing to be home these days, especially when so many things had been happening in the north region of Fiore. The only annoying part of all this was that Khalfani still had a duty as some sort of leader. Here in this country, they were a royal prince. Back in the day this wasn't an honor they had accepted so easily. Now though, they were elated to embrace the role. It meant that they would be treated exactly as they were supposed to be; with the highest respects. Of course they weren't anything like the other royals of other kingdoms. Khalfani didn't treat the people like they were worthless or beings that deserved to face their wrath. Instead Khalfani embraced all who loved them and showed them their loyalty. They felt a deep connection to everyone of this country now and finally...they respected them as well.

The commander of Paradise strolled through the halls of their villa, slowly, thinking about everything they had endured up onto this point. More than that though, they pondered on their next move. There was something lurking in the dark. The titans that rampaged upon the North didn't just come from nowhere, they were sent. The world hadn't bestowed such godly gifts for without reason. The Oracle didn't come and give them a groundbreaking reading of the future for nothing. The stronger they grew, the more they learned about themselves and the world around them, the stronger the voice in their head grew. Khalfani was able to deal with it all now, but one day the voice may become so loud that it would no longer be easy to ignore. Unfortunately, there was nobody Khal could speak to about this. Everyone would think that they had been losing their mind. The Northerners would quickly take back their support and Paradise Dawn would judge appropriately and the commander expected no less.

Under normal circumstances they would be back in Desierto to take a break from the rest of the world. The pleasures of servants and people itching to please them were things worth taking advantage of. However, this time around they were here for something specific. It was something they hadn't signed up for and it was definitely something they recognized they weren't at all ready for. The Ascended had become something far more powerful. Everyday they were itching closer to godhood. It was for that reason that the Pharaoh believed they were worthy of this honor. Perhaps this honor just wasn't worthy of the prince. After all, marrying someone you didn't know from a hole in the wall wasn't something people normally embraced. Alas, this was the world they lived in. As twisted as it may be, this was the politics of not only Desierto but countries all over the world.

There was something coming. One would have been a fool to not see the omens as clear as they've been displayed. Perhaps though, what was worse was the voice that Khalfani had been hearing in their head. It was distant and didn't come too often, but it was there. In fact, it was connected to them. Trauma was real, perhaps after killing that girl their mind had broken. Maybe. Maybe it was the effect of these new powers. Whatever this voice was, whomever it belonged to; all signs pointed to them being a liberator. They yearned for answers, they yearned for justice, they yearned for freedom except their version of all these things were twisted. Khal had been in deep thought about their troubles as they casually walked through their estate. Servants had been moving around, tending to whatever duties they had, nodding and smiling at the prince when they passed them.

It wouldn't take long for Khalfani to reach their quarters. The metallic door with symbols on it expressing their royal heritage stood mighty compared to the other doors of the various rooms. Khalfani sighed, pushing the door open before seeing four handmaidens awaiting them. "Your grace." One of them said aloud. The others bowed. A brown headed woman with emerald eyes stepped aside revealing the Prince's chair. "Lady Nuru is on her way. We must prepare you to meet her, orders of Lord God-King." She bowed. Her voice was silky smooth and comforting to the ears. With a warm smile, the dragon slayer nodded, greeting the women. "Very well." They said. Times have changed. In the shortest amount of time Khalfani had become more elegant in their mannerisms. They would stroll towards the chair in front of the mirror and golden ornaments before taking their seat. "When is Lady Nuru expected to arrive?" They asked.

"By sunset." One of the hand maidens stated before picking up a brush and combing through their hair. Another woman began dipping a brush into a golden palette before spreading it across the Commanders eyelid. It was no secret that Khalfani was always wearing some sort of eyeliner, but these handmaidens had done research to know that it was a necessity. Khal looked into the mirror. "Alright then. Gratitude ladies, for getting me ready." Silence filled the air for a brief moment. "Being forced married off was never apart of my own plans, especially not to some stranger. When you see my grandfather, could you tell him I said he's an asshole and deserves to burn in the depths of Duat?" Khal's eyes shifted fro off of themselves and bounced between the women as they gazed into the mirror. The maidens paused for a moment, looking at each other for confirmation.

One one hand they couldn't say no to the Prince, on the other hand telling the pharaoh that their grandchild called them an idiot would probably only backfire on them. Khal didn't care though. "Hm?" they hummed with a melody. "Y-yes, your grace." Khalfani's warm smile slowly turned a devilish smirk. "Good." they ended. The prince knew that they wouldn't deny. Whether they told the Pharaoh or not was a different story, of course Khalfani wouldn't waste time following up to find out but they were sure that the servants would think so. After about an hour or so readying the Slayer, the Servants left their room and someone else soon knocked on the door. "Come in." Khalfani said, already standing by the door. Two guards bowed before saying anything. "Lady Nuru is here." Khal nodded. The prince already knew she was, it was the only reason the guards would disturb them.

"Bring me to her." Khalfani said. This was the moment of truth. In the seconds to come Khalfani would meet the woman to be their bride for the first time. They weren't nervous, though they were a bit confused on how he was supposed to feel. He was slightly annoyed but not at all angered. As the prince, they understood that things like this were simply politics. The real question wasn't whether or not they were supportive of this, it was whether or not Lady Nuru would be supportive of this. In the end it didn't matter if they liked it or not, but if she was someone too rebellious then this would be a headache for everyone. The guards walked in front of the Desiertan commander. They were quiet. In about three minutes they had stopped in the center of the throne room. It was small compared to the throne room in the castle.

What would the future bring? Who would the future bring? The door of the floor opened and Khal immediately turned their head to see who it was. There she was; Lady Nuru, wearing a long silk white dress and adorned in gold jewelry. Some sort of crown sat atop her head. It wasn't the crown of a Royal but it definitely spoke to her status in Desierto. All Khalfani had known was that she was one of the special guardians. Lady Nuru was apparently an extremely different case. She was the only guardian capable of wielding all of the elements. Darkness, light, water, wind, nature, earth, fire, lightning and Arcane. She was supposedly a goddess in her own right. It made sense why this union was so important to the kingdom. Her face sent a clear message. She didn't seem to be opposed to being here, moreso uninterested altogether.

A tall woman approached Khalfani as their gods stepped aside. "Your highness." Khalfani looked at her for a moment, absorbing every ounce of information that they could. This woman was power hungry, eager to rise in the ranks and believed that people were expendable. Her name was Ketmedi, no magical abilities, hardly any physical prowess. With a warm smile the Prince turned to the woman who would be their princess in the days to come. She was a noble woman from what they could gather, she cared about her family and her country. Her powers and abilities were the most interesting things about her. Khal nodded towards her. "Your grace, I do hope you have dinner and a bath prepared." She said in a slightly bothered tone. Ketmedi turned to Nuru with a frown of disapproval. "My Apologies, Lord Khalfani. Please excuse Lady Nuru, she is tir-" Khalfani raised their hand.

"It's fine." They assured. "It's a pleasure to meet you Lady Nuru, I've heard so much about you. I hope our unification becomes easier to digest over time." With a bow the prince turned. "Come." Nuru scoffed before following Khalfani as they walked through the hall in the direction the prince had just come from. She didn't want to be here and to be quite honest, she shouldn't have been forced to. As the duo walked through the halls, the woman who brought Lady Nuru smiled wickedly. She was going to shoot up the ladder of power as long as Lady Nuru existed. All of this was a game to her, just as it was to a bunch of other people. "How the trip?" Khalfani asked, at least attempting to create conversation. "It went well."  was all she said. Khal didn't have much experience with women, it made this interaction only a little awkward. It felt like at any second she'd snap and just slap the shit out of them.

"I'm glad. Look, I understand how annoying this all is. I've never heard of a guardian being married to any royal family member. I don't want this anymore than you do." Nuru turned to face her soon to be groom. "No. You don't know anything, my prince. Guardians are supposed to stay out of politics, our power is supposed to be used for the sake of Desierto's protection only. We're created to be a neutral party. Forcing me to marry you is an objection to the gods will. It's a power play to secure the Royal family's place on the Throne. Not only are we playing with fire, but I am nothing more than an object to you. It's...disgusting." She hissed. How could Khalfani counter everything she was saying? Lady Nuru was absolutely right. Every guardian was supposed to stay out of the fray of politics except when it came to keeping the balance in Desierto. This union was a power play. Many people had already disagreed. Alas, none would object the God-King's demand.

"Is the Pharaoh not a god on earth?" Khalfani asked, striking back quickly. Nuru turned with a twisted look on her face. "He is a god amongst men, not-" Khalfani raised their hand. "But he is a god, and he is your king. This marriage is different, but it is not bound to be cursed by the gods. The Pharaoh is a god who has blessed this union. It may be frowned upon by the people, but the people are not chosen by the gods. We are." Khalfani said before walking out of the building to the pool. Lady Nuru turned away again, quiet as Khalfani sat by the water. "Come. At the very least we should get to know each other. Nothing says we can't be friends." They smiled. Nuru rolled her eyes before sitting beside the prince, her feet dipping into the pool. The two would spend the rest of the evening talking and getting acquainted. They would find that they had more similarities than differences.
