Nuala hadn’t been up to much since her return to Fiore. She had been with the guild mostly, just enjoying her days and frankly lazying around. When Nuala had been to Savannah a few relevant things had ocurred that had changed things for the demon, most of which were actually a rather big contribution to her lifestyle. First of all, there had been her eye. During her time before going back to Savannah, Nuala had strolled around Fiore and come across a rather interesting figure, who was selling merchandise of seemingly incredibly worth for.. a rather big chunk of money, but apparently it had been worth it. Nuala had never interacted with that person before in her life (if you could even call it a person really) but their reputation was quite something. Every now and then she would hear rumors at black market of a merchant who sold merchandise that was unlike any other item that you could find at the usual markets. It is said that those items were of incredible worth and no one really knew how the merchant had obtained them. That alone made Nuala perk up and much to her delight, she’s had the joy of being able to meet them.

The mechant themselves was a mystery to begin with, but Nuala decided not to ask questions. She had plenty of money to spend and she had bought herself a whole new eye. Something that was possible apparently. There was a type of surgery involved, but the eye was pretty much replaced via magic. It was quite something and even though Nuala was sceptical at first, the purchase itself had been totally worth it. It was a modification for one of her eyes. Her old eye had been removed and she had gotten it replaced with a new one - someone elses eye to be exact. The magical thing about that eye was that Nuala now could use magic. She wasn’t a magician per se, she never had been, but with the help of that eye she would actually be able to copy spells from other people’s magic. It was a rare feat and a good one to say the least, so Nuala wasn’t mad on the amount of money she had dropped on it. Part of her couldn’t help but wonder what the merchant who had sold her the eye was doing with all that money though.

But that was kinda beside the point. Nuala could always use the money and because of that, she had to go and find work. Luckily that wasn’t a very difficult task in a city such as Oak, where there were always many jobs to find. Besides, when Nuala was in Savannah she had also made a companion. That companion was Luci, a tiny demon that was about the size of a cat and didn’t really have much strength. However that’s not what makes Luci special and Nuala knew that. They kinda bonded over shared demonhood and while there was nothing likable about Luci, she liked that he was at leas thonest about everything. That and he could really prove to be useful by helping her barter for better prices at shops. For some reason he was really good at that. Whenever Nuala wanted to buy something, Luci would be able to barter for good items and a better price. There was just something about him that merhants simply couldn’t deny. Why? She didn’t know. Nuala had spent some time with her new companion and even though he pretended not to look her very much, he was always willing to help.

Of course there was always something that Nuala wanted that Luci couldn’t help her with, but for the time being it didn’t really matter. She was still in Oak after all this time, and she also knew which place in particular needed help. The Oakland Church was a popular place for believers to visit and Nuala knew that the townsfolk, especially the elderly, often frequented the church in search of comfort and god knows what else they found there. It wasn’t really the place for her, however Nuala knew that the church grounds weren’t as peaceful and holy as one might think. In fact, she was pretty positive that they were haunted. She had seen it many times before and even though she couldn’t quite figure out why it didn’t stop, even though she had tried many times to help the resident pastor to get rid of that problem, it just kept persisting. There were ghosts haunting the catacombs underneath the church, which wasn’t unusual or even weird if you think about it, however Nuala had spent three nights already visitng that place at night and trying to eradicate the spooking ghosts. Without much success, which was the weird part. Would it ever stop?

Nuala wasn’t sure, but also she didn’t care. The pastor was rich, she assumed. Well not the pastor directly but rather the church. Oak was a big city, with a decent population and like she mentioned before, all of them visited the church very often. It was kind of their ritual and it was important to them. They often came bringing gifts and plenty of donations and the donations were honestly the main reason why the pastor was able to continue paying her for her work. That and she also assumed that the church and Oak were probably getting some money from the government since there was always a decent pay involved. Nuala had been paid to clear out the catacombs in the past and she had defeated the ghosts like she would defeat any usual monster. With violence and with the usage of her weapons, since she didn’t use magic. It had worked well so far and never proved to be any sort of problem. And the pay was very good. The pastor paid her handsomely, always around half a million jewels, which was a crazy amount if u thought about it. Nuala very much enjoyed that.

Because of this, she decided to go for another round at the church catacombs. It wasn’t the most glorious job in the world, but she could make due. Besides, Nuala really had nothing better to do and she didn’t wanna leave Oak yet. The place here was actually very well connected and she had a few informants here and there that would be able to inform her about the special merchants location should he be spotted somewhere. That and this was also kind of becoming her home now, with Daeva Eye gone. That aside, Nuala really had nowhere else to go and she figured that soon enough, better opportunities would arise. So she decided to start packing her stuff at sundown, since the ghosts didn’t really come out before that. She didn’t bring much, just her two weapons and her apparel and that’s it. No purse or bag or anything. Luci would be able to join her if he wanted to and it seemed that he did. He wanted to see the chaos she was capable of causing, which was honestly fine with her. Nuala didn’t mind and allowed him to sit on her shoulder as she left the guild halls to leave for the church grounds.

The church was the usual same old, nothing ever really changed her. Nuala didn’t mind. She didn’t mind doing the same job over and over again, since it promised her a stable income. Besides, it was a simple enough job and she still had her entire life to do different things. There had been a time when Nuala was in Savannah where she had something different to do every single day and while that wasn’t bad either, she certainly didn’t mind things being the way they were at this moment. Because of this Nuala entered the church in her usual get up and greeted the pastor. He already knew what she had come here for, so this was to no surprise really. He gave her the key to the catacombs like he always did and didn’t say anything else. There was no need for further instructions and Nuala knew what she needed to do. The sun had already gone down as well, so now was probably a good time for her to get to work. The daemon headed back outside and entered the catacombs through a backdoor behind the church.

This led her into a larger corridor, which was quite long and lit by a few torches. Nuala picked up one of the torches which she would later use to light up the dark catacombs, because she couldn’t see in the dark anymore. Interestingly, losing her night sight had been one of the things that had bothered her the most, she simply wasn’t used to it. But she would get used to it and who knew: maybe there was a magically enhanced item or something like that that the woman could use to regain her night sight. But for now, that wasn’t what was on the list. She lit up the torches next to the door and opened it with the key the pastor had given her. Then she entered the catacombs and proceeded to light more torches that hung from the walls until she felt as though she could see far enough. From the depths, she could already hear the moaning and screaming of the spirits and ghosts, but they didn’t bother her anymore. She could see though how this would scare the normal villagers, especially if this was coming from the church - an alleged safe space for the people.

With that all said and done, Nuala let go of the church and pulled out her two daggers. The spirits could easily be sliced through and they didn’t really cause any problems. It was almost strange how easy it was to kill them and with her strength and speed, Nuala usually didn’t have to worry about anything. She simply started attacking away and hacked her way through spirit after spirit. They would dimnish and sometimes even explode into a dusty cloud, but thats about all that happened to them. Nuala knew there was no real way to kill a restless spirit, they would simply come back after recovering in a few days. She kept this up without much effort for a few hours, resting occassionally in an area that she had recently cleared. Nuala never thought much about the spirits themselves but rather how many there were and if perhaps an exorcism could end this time of issue in a more permanent way. But that was for the pastor to figure out. She couldn’t think of any possible reason as to why he wouldn’t want this to go away permanently, but even though her technique of going about this issue didn’t promise any permanent help, he kept paying her for the same work.

But that wasn’t any of Nuala’s problem. As long as he did pay her, she wouldn’t question his goals or intentions. Instead, Nuala proceeded to work on the spirits and cleared out the entire catacomb. It was a surprisingly large place but she figured that was due to Oak Town being a rather large village with a long history. She wondered if all the citizens were buried here an how old these spirits were. Once she could hear no more moaning and screaming down the long corridors of the catacomb, Nuala figured that she was finished for now. She cleaned herself up, dusted herself off and then headed back outside. Nuala made sure to put out all the torches so that she didn’t accidently set the entire church on fire and then locked the catacomb door behind her with the key she had been given. Then she walked down the large corridor and left the underground spaces of the church all together. Nuala handed the pastor the key he had given her and in return, she was paid a juicy sum of money, which she gratefully accepted.
