A long time had passed since Nuala had last stepped into Oak City. Well, at least by human standards. To the daemon, it really hadn’t been all that long. She gave Shadowmere, her horse and loyal companion, a gentle pad as the large, dark animal huffed. The mare had always preferred Fiore’s cooler, milder weather over Savannah. The wild nation that was far away from the well cultivated Fiore was much different and even the horse had taken a while to get accustomed to the different atmosphere, the different countryside and the much higher temperatures. Nuala had decided to spend some time away from the place she now called home. The guild had been informed and none of that had been much of a problem to organize. She simply needed some time away and it seemed that everyone had kind of taken a similar approach at the same time. The members of Eternal Nightmare had scattered across the continent and everyone had kind of gone about their own business. It was good – a welcomed change for everyone. Personally, Nuala had taken some time away to reinvent herself. Joining a new guild had merely been the first step in her bigger plan.

It’s been two years since then and she was satisfied with the results. Nuala nudged Shadowmere towards the inner gates of the city and decided to step by the guild first. There probably wasn’t anyone around but they did have a stable where her horse could rest – she really deserved it. It was around midday and the city was busy as ever. Oak didn’t seem to have changed much in the past two years, which was probably good in its own way. She did appreciate change but at the same time things like that were often difficult to keep touch with if you weren’t around. Nuala had gone back to Savannah to see a face sculptor, a person who could change her appearance without magic. She knew that there were simpler ways, simply drink a potion and have it be over with, but the daemon had a very specific look in mind that she wanted to achieve and she didn’t want to wake up looking like a different, random person. She needed to meet with someone who knew what they were doing and from her time in Savannah, being born there and all that, she knew just the right person for that.

After the restructuring of her body, the thief had gone about her usual business. In the end, Nuala had been a thief for everything and even took on the occassional assassin job, but art theft was something she was especially well versed in. She enjoyed that type of work very much, but also felt as though she needed to get back to her roots and spend some time in her homeland. It definitely helped her come back down to earth and she didn’t regret spending time there. However, her return was also long overdue and she was glad to be back in closer proximity to her guild, where she could function as a proper guild member. Nuala was positive that with what she had learned and gained in Savannah, she would be able to fit back into Fiore no problem. There was something about her previously that she simply needed to shed. All the memories of her past self, the past people she had been with that had all disappeared on her and of course also the race she had lost. Being a daemon was much different from being a Voidling, and that’s something she had to learn the hard way.

The body modifications at least had been a success and Nuala was very happy with herself. It was something she could work with and even though her appearance probably had taken a toll and she was what many would consider “uglier” than before, with all the scars covering her, she was very happy. Being pretty didn’t really matter that much to Nuala in the first place, so she could work with what she got. But for now, it was time to get back into the swing of things. After dropping Shadowmere off at the guild and going up to the guild and into her room to change her clothes and take a shower, she went out to grab some food. Oak was a great place to find work at, as there was always something going on here. Someone always needed help and rumours even had it that the city was cursed ever since the former evil guild Phantom Lord first took place here. Of course Phantom Lord was long gone since then, and Eternal Nightmare had essentially replaced it, but at the same time, a few things still remained the same. There were rumours of ghosts and all that after all.

Nuala didn’t believe more in ghosts than the next best person, at least not in the classical sense. She knew, however, for a fact, that something was going on in Oak but being a daemon herself she certainly wasn’t scared or anything. Nuala went back to town to grab some food and then headed around towards the local quest board to see if there was any work for her to do. There was always something, but Nuala looking for a well paying job and even though she already had an idea of where she wanted to go, she decided to stop by the quest board anyways. Much to her disappointment, there was nothing there, so she went back to town to see if there was any gossip and much to her delight, there was. The Oakland Church was a place that was meant to provide refugee for the citizens of Oak, but more often than not it was surrounded in strange rumours and mystery. It was such a paradox but Nuala couldn’t help but be intrigued by it for that exact reason. The woman decided to stop by and visit the pastor working there. They had met before, in the past.

Nuala had taken a job for him previously, but rumour had it that he still had issues in that regard. It was interesting and apparently an on going issue, but that didn’t really matter to her. Nuala was usually just in it for the money and the pastor was someone who always paid well. In fact, his rates were so good that she couldn’t help but wonder how he was being able to pay her that much. Nuala’s work rates weren’t cheap – she was a high ranking member of the guild after all and could get much more work done much more efficiently than normal people, but he never was running out of cash. That in itself was rather shady, but she decided not to stick her nose in other people’s business. That aside, she was certain that the guy was doing some shady business behind closed doors, but it really didn’t matter. Nuala was there for a more obvious job. She walked across the town until she could see the church yard from afar. It was gloomy looking as always, with small grave stones poking out of the ground here and there. A huge wistera added to the atmosphere.

Nuala walked up to the church and didn’t bother knocking, as it wasn’t required anyways and the church was open during the day to visitors. Nuala walked in, surprised that she could do so being a demon and all that, but apparently having no obscura was helping with that. In the end she was able to submit and subdue her inner daemon and therefor Nuala was never acting or feeling under its influence. She was very much an independent person. It was good, despite the initial struggle. The pastor looked up but showed no signs of recognition, after all she had changed her face. There were a few people sitting on the benches around the church, minding their own business and Nuala paid them no heed. She approached the pastor who looked at her with a questionable expression. From her getup he could probably tell that she was here for work. Nuala wore combat gear in the colour black, with daggers tightly stripped to her hip. She was also dressed like a traveller in a sense and when she continued to approach him, he simply turned towards her and nodded. “Welcome,” he said as a greeting and Nuala merely nodded.

“Father,” she said in response and gave him a knowing smile. “Long time no see. It’s Nuala, from EN – I take it you remember me?” His eyes widened with recognition and that was really all she needed. “New hair colour?” She gave a solemn nod and a grin. He proceeded to ask her for the reason of her visit, although he could probably already guess. Nuala confirmed it. “I’m looking for work, figured you’d have something for me.” He gave her a nod and sighed. His shoulders slumped and he suddenly looked very tired. The pastor then proceeded to explain how the problem in their catacombs hadn’t been resolved yet. New spirits keep showing up and clawing their souls back out of the coffins and tombs and none of them were actually at rest. Their screams and moans could be heard at night all the way back to town and the people were growing more and more suspicious of the church. They were scared of approaching because of this and he needed that issue taken care of. However it seemed that recently not many guild members had been around, which is why he had been struggling to find people to hire.

That’s really all Nuala needed to know. Nuala was given a key to the catacombs and was asked to wait until nighttime, when the spirits would start showing up. Nuala knew that the spirits could be destroyed or talked out of causing any more chaos and disturbance but frankly, Nuala wasn’t the type to talk with a bunch of spirits. That was time consuming and she honestly was way too apathetic to do something like that. Destroying them was quicker and would lead to better results - and higher rewards. As a result, she waited until nighttime before entering the catacombs, walking down the seemingly endless corridor before she ended up in the catacombs, carefully looking the door behind her. It was deeply creepy down here, even for a person like her, but Nuala didn’t feel anything akin to fear. Instead, she unsheated her daggers and began to hack at it like a madwoman. She was quick on her feet and her dashes and slashes were quick, sharp and deadly. Nuala spent almost the entire night slicing through spirit after spirit and it was mostly their loud cries that helped her detect more and more of them. They were indeed quiet noisy, so the noise complaints made sense.

Unfortunately Nuala knew that they would simply come back after being quiet for a few nights, which is why technically the pastor always needed someone down here. It was honestly a shit ton of work, and nothing Nuala could commit to permanently, but for the time being and while she was in Oak, it was a good a job as any. Nuala continued to fight her way through the countless spirits, occassionally stopping to take a break and scan her surroundings and by the time the sun was rising, she had destroyed the last noisy spirit and was able to call it a day. Nuala crawled out of the catacombs with sweat and dust covering her body, but the pastor seemed pleased all the same. She did notify him that there never really seemed to be an actual decrease in their numbers, but apparently he already knew that. There were just too many dead people that had died in Oak in the past few hundred years. He paid her a very handsome reward and Nuala was deeply satisfied by the amount of jewels she was able to collect from a few hours of work. She would be returning for sure.
