Another day, another struggle. Seika could feel his bones creak as he arose from his slumber to face the day ahead of him. His head was partly foggy as he struggled to gain some sort of clarity of what happened to him. He vaguely remembered taking yet another pest extermination mission and yet for some reason the memory started to get super foggy after he entered the bunker itself.

Hand resting on his chest, he winced quietly and let out a heavy exhale as he felt on the tender skin and flesh that sat on his chest, the remnants of his encounter with the eldritch being that had briefly mind controlled him. The fogginess was due to the lack of clarity and coherence as he finally sat up through the pain. A soft growl rolling from his lips as he managed to lurch himself forward in a hunched position.

Finally upright, he could see the world around him a bit clearer. He was currently resting in the medical bay of the Orchidia City Rune Knight barracks. The barracks themselves were relatively barren, just a few heavily injured knights laid here and there. However to his surprise there were no nurses.

Hitomi Minamoto †
For once in a long time, Hitomi had a pretty good sleep. She dreamt of fame, fortune, a family to really call her own. She was at peace, a peace that nowadays seemed more and more attainable. Taking a deep sigh Hitomi opened her eyes to a new day. She took a few moments to soak in the last remnants of sleep that didn't want to let her go from the rather cozy bed she laid in. She had to linger around in the blankets for at least twenty minutes before getting up and starting her day. Today would be as busy as the last. Orchidia's rat problem was something that amazed her and she was starting to wonder if, even with the increase in Rune Knight presence that they could even get it under control. Cleaning herself and putting on a simple pair of pants and a shirt, Hitomi made her way out to the medical bay of the Orchidia City Rune Knight barracks where she left Seika.

Although she was the captain she had enough money to not stay in the barracks. Not many knights were there but she knew that was where she last left her subordinate. Slipping into the Medical Bay she was greeted with only Seika. It was strange that no other medical personnel was around but she wouldn't question that out loud for now. " Hello, Seika. How are you doing today? Little less full of rats I see. " Pulling up a chair to the side of his bed as she spoke, the Rune Knight Captain took a seat. Folding one leg over the other, her violet gaze peered into Seika's eyes as she gave him a smile.

His eyes panned the room and tried to understand the actual barrenness of his situation. There was no way that he could be in the medical ward. There was always at least one Cleric around administering some form of healing magic to the sick and wounded. He struggled to get up from his bed but felt his wounds act and and hissed in agony at the burning sensation that flowed through his body. It was then that Hitomi had strode into the room and graced him with her presence. A small scowl sat beneath smoldering golden irises as he attempted to blast literal laser beams through the Captain. He knew it wasn't her fault that he was in his current state deep down, but it still hurt his pride that he had been removed as a threat so thoroughly by an entity that he had only stared at. That was the part that pissed him off the most. He never got a chance to even lay hands on it. He had needed help and thus he had been proven to be weak.

His hands clenched at this as the young woman sat down in the chair that had been placed by his bed. Her soft beautiful features showed just the hint of care and compassion as he inquired about this status. He knew that it was her job as his superior, but that didn't stop him from feeling just a bit slighted. She hadn't been placed in a similar status as he had. In fact from what he could see, she didn't even have a scratch on her, which meant that even with him essentially weighing her down, she hadn't never needed his assistance to begin with. Scowl deepening, he'd bite through the pain as he shifted his frame from underneath the covers. His movements would reveal his scared and pock marked body to the world, the powerful lines of muscles traced a story of struggle and suffering, and yet the power that his body belied attempted to give the impression of safety and security. But it was the various injuries that really sold the fragility of his body, the various near life threatening wounds, the constant darkening skin from an overuse of his flames. It was these muscles that flexed with every inhale as he struggled to arise from the bed he had spent the night in. He knew what her appearance meant. She was seeing if he could keep going or if he had finally gotten his fill of the action. It was pretty standard procedure for a superior to question their subordinate after a hard hit to ensure mental fortitude.

Sighing at this, he'd grace the woman with a smile before struggling to stand up. He almost missed her sensual frame take a seat. Maybe it was the hit he had taken but he found himself noticing little details that he hadn't before he had been taken away. He would definitely have to do a study to see what else was different with his thoughts and personality. For now however, he'd respond to the woman's inquiry, "Definitely better off than lost night. I honestly don't know what that was, but I'll be sure to burn it first next time we come across something that ridiculous." And he was serious about that one. No more staring gob smacked at unknown variables. It had been shown so far with these missions that any time something unknown happened, it would be followed with a literal fight for their lives. And boy was he so tired of fighting for his life against enemies he barely considered cognizant.

When Seika's eyes met her own she caught every little detail in his face. Every line in his scowl, the intense gaze he returned her way from her own warm one, his whole body screamed in a way that his voice would later betray. She could sit here and make assumptions but she wasn't that sort of person. Hitomi was not used to being in a position where she had to lead, and after last night she nearly doubted her ability to do so when her subordinate fell in battle, and to rats no less. Standing in someone else's shadow for as long as she had really put her in a different mindset now that she had to stand in the light on her own. It was a different and surreal experience to have someone depend on her. A weight like that was almost crushing because one wrong move and one could be cast from that light and be seen as untrustworthy and unreliable. Looking at the scars on Seika's body she felt a small bit of that, of feeling as if she had failed even though they both came out alive, his injuries were a direct result of her weak leadership skills.

Her facial expression stayed calm when Seika exclaimed that he would take down the beast the next time he saw it. Hitomi was glad that she had someone like him under her, someone that would bounce back from an experience like that. It was at that same moment a nurse rushed in apologizing as did so, trying to scramble together an excuse for her and many other nurses' absence. Holding her hand up to stop the nurse from speaking any further, she would hear no excuse because it would do nothing for them now. " Just please attend to him. No need for theatrics. Thank you. " Her words were like butter but the meaning behind them burned like acid, " Just do your job and shut up ". Her smiling eyes turned from the nurse who had long, curly black hair and aquamarine tinted irises. She was pretty enough but nothing that interested Hitomi. Turning her attention back to Seika as the nurse went about her job, collecting healing creams and bandages, Hitomi gave him another look over. He would be fine and since it sounded like he was up for more she would let him get himself ready.

"I'm glad to hear you say that because we've got another assignment. More rat duty. Even though we cleared out one den another was found not too far away from it. Unfortunately, we have reports coming in that this den has become troublesome with each group of adventurers that go in, so now we, the Rune Knights have been employed for the job. Seven groups have gone into that den and less than half of the members that go in don't come out. They think the two dens are connected and the den the adventures went in is where most of what we fought has been claimed as its home "

Having heard the report, Hitomi wasn't sure she should have come to Seika to bring him along. After last night, even though he held his own, when it counted the most he froze up. Hitomi knew she shouldn't blame him, had she at least been vocal or protected him a bit more, he would have gotten out unscathed most likely. Still, it was risky to bring a lower-ranked mage along on quests like this. She could put her all into protecting him but that would just make it harder. Of course, these and many other thoughts roamed in her mind but she knew the best teacher experienced so bringing him with her would only benefit them both in the end. " After you get all patched up, meet me here. " Reaching into her breast pocket she pulled out a card with the hotel's name she was staying at. The barracks wasn't a place she was about to spend her time when she had the money to live in luxury. " Take as much time as you need to heal up. I want you at your very best going into this. We won't be able to approach this the same way we did yesterday, but I'll go through all the important information when you come to see me. " Standing up she looked over at the nurse who was applying cream and ointments to Seika. Hitomi's eyes for a flash of a moment faded from the calm, kind gaze she had been wearing all this time, to one of disgust and disappointment. She would have to talk to someone about replacing the staff here. Giving Seika one last smile she turned from him and sauntered off, needing to prepare herself for what was to come.

The care the woman gave to him was appreciated as he continued to stare ahead into oblivion. He had been spared true humiliation by the woman if only because she accepted his failure as part of his own. Of course that only added on to his wallowing pity. He was a chosen warrior of the Sun and had been done in by an agent of the cold unfeeling darkness. It was as if the world or the otherworldly horrors around him were laughing at his patron saint, mocking and debasing Sol for the gifts that he had not already given him, but continued to provide for him as his most devout servant. Heat filled his chest at that thought as he clenched his fists in fury.

He wouldn't let his growing anger prevent him from listening to his superior, the woman speaking on the current situation that had only grown worse due to the rats growing more out of control with each failed eradication attempt. This news only added fuel to the fire that was his growing torn soul. The situation should've been dealt with, yet instead here he was, laid up in a bed being tended to by failures posing as healers. And if what his supervisor said was true, he was the luck one. Many didn't ever make it out of that hell hole. It was that knowledge and weight that fell on Seika as he stewed over the information given to him. He was basically being told that they were the only ones who could do it, the only ones who had the power to end this menace, or at least this part of the greater menace.

He would stew in his thoughts as his Captain was left to her own thoughts as well. Due to his focus on his own thoughts he missed the byplay between his Captain and his nurse. He missed the woman shuffle nervously near him, the healing salves she applied were practically worthless if he was honest, but it was the thought that counted. He had always healed better with just some sunlight and time, the sooner he could get out of this stuff prison he would be more than fine. As such, he'd snap at the chance to leave when Hitomi mentioned that they had actually been given orders to finish the job for this area. He wouldn't look up at her just yet as she walked away from him and the nurse, already preparing to leave him behind regardless of his reason. It was fine however, he already said that he would do better next time. He clenched his fingers and closed them around a small flame that had sparked to life in his palm.

Hitomi would have already passed by the opening of the door when he finally spoke up, "I'll see you tomorrow Captain." It was simple and to the point. He was going to keep his promise this time. He already had everything he needed to complete the task, he just had to acknowledge that he was touched by the Sun and embrace it. He was the one true incandescent and thus he must shine brighter than anyone. Nothing in this mortal plane would shine brighter than him and the Sun, for it was as Sol decreed.

The last words of her subordinate didn't miss her ear as she left the room. She was glad she had an eager member of the Rune Knights to take on this quest. Making it to her hotel room she wasted no time in taking care of her sword. Kusanagi had gotten her out of far too many different problems that needed violence as an answer. Hitomi made sure to take the utmost care of it. As she cleaned it and sharpened the blade her mind went towards her family, she was able to send her bodyguards back to her grandfather who she had not heard a word from since then. A part of her was content with that but there was a biting worry in the back of her head that she was trying to ignore. She knew that her newfound family was ok but she wasn't so sure. For a man that had doted on her as soon as he met her, his silence and lack of communication was something of note. Pushing the thoughts in the back of her mind, she finished up her nightly tasks. These tasks included Kusanagi maintenance, preparing her clothes and items for the next day, bath soaking and showering, eating, and some other minor things. Soon she was off to sleep, waiting for a new day to come.

Hitomi had slept well and awoke just moments before the sunrise. With everything already prepared, she took a shower, did her far too long hair up into a bun to keep it out of the way, and got dressed. Before she left her room she grabbed Kusanagi and her Rune Knights Pendant, which she attached to the belt loop of her pants. She was ready to go and even though she told Seika that to meet her at the hotel she decided to go to him instead. Making her way over to the barracks she made a stop by a cafe and grabbed two coffees, a could of breakfast sandwiches, and some fruit. They should at least be well fed if they were going to undertake such a daunting task. It took her nearly no time at all to enter the barracks after getting the food. She could only hope she made it in before Seika woke up. Hitomi really hopped she didn't miss him on her way here or she would have to double back to the hotel to catch him

Sleep never truly came for the battle monk. Years of training and understanding had prepared him for this moment in his life as he walked over to the bag that held his belongings. He was thankful to the young page that had delivered them from his room at the hotel. Pulling out a few clothes, he rubbed the soft cloth material between two fingers and considered the clothing before laying it out on his bed in an orderly fashion. After doing this he would take a shower, turning the heat up to its maximum scalding his skin beautifully as he faced the spout and allowed the water to drench his very being. Cleansing his soul of impurities was just as important his body however so he quickly used the soap given in the medical ward.

Exiting the shower room would leave him back in the empty ward. Drying his body quietly with the soft white towel, he would grab his staff before stabbing it straight into the ground using the pike at the end of the staff. The candle at the top flared up at this action, bathing the room in flickering warmth as the light atop the staff illuminated the entire room in a bright incandescent light. Seika would smile at this sight before turning to sit on the bed. He would fold his legs underneath himself, taking on a more meditative position as he calmed his breathing to steady himself. It had been far too long since he had properly meditated in Sol's grace and he could feel that his inner light and flame had dimmed if only slightly. Fiore was changing him, and that change was not something that could be considered good in the long run. He had to reignite his flame back to its proper brilliance.

Taking in a deep shuddering breath, he could feel the heat from the flame wash over his muscular frame, his naked body prostrated before the light that served as Sol's avatar when the deity itself was no longer around in the sky. While the staff may have been named the Staff of Prometheus, Seika knew it for it's true name and purpose. He had felt it as soon as he had laid hands on the sacred weapon, the scorching hot metal was almost unbearable at first as it tested his mettle and resolve. He couldn't believe that he had found one of Sol's relics in such a country, the staff itself had been burning brightly underneath one of Illumin's churches. Apparently the priests there had been performing various heretical rituals on the staff and that had caused the light to dim slightly. However ever since reclaiming the holy weapon from those non believers, Seika had only felt his strength grow exponentially since then. The only reason he hadn't brought it along with him on the previous mission was due to the weapon actually needing a proper cleaning as it hadn't been maintained while it had been stored under that church.

His prayer and meditation carried on for the rest of the night and into the morning with him having slipped into a sort of trance part way through leaving him in a lucid state of awareness. No one else shared the ward with him so he wasn't worried about any of the other patients seeing him in this state of undress, and the 'nurses' were all gone for the evening leaving him to his own devices. He would rest here long until the morning when he planned to finally arise well rested and ready to go. However as he rested there with Sol's magnificent light barely peeking over the horizon, he was startled out of his state as Hitomi walked through the door carrying goodies.

Hitomi entered the room with a smile on her face, putting on her ever-positive charm as she approached an awakening Seika. Though she could tell he might have only awoken because she arrived. " I'm sorry, I brought some breakfast. As she practically glided over to Seika she sat the food and coffee down on the small table next to him before grabbing a chair and taking a seat. " Good Morning Seika. I hope you don't mind but I picked us up a bite to eat. A few breakfast sandwiches, some fruit, and coffee. I have sugar and creamer as well if you like those added. I figure since we've got a long day ahead of us, we might as well be well fed. " Pulling out the notes she had from the other day she wanted to make sure they were prepared for what was to come because there would be no time to double-check for anything once they went in.

Before she went over the notes aloud she prepped her coffee with some sugar and creamer, taking a sip she leaned back in her chair, one leg over the other. " I know I went over some details of the quest yesterday but we have some finer points to touch upon. The creatures were are going out to confront have the ability to use magic to some extent, and they tend to go for the divide and conquer style of attacking their victims. We will not split up, the path to where we are going to kill the nest is very clear. In fact, there will be times where I will hold onto you, just to be safe. If we do get split up, I will find you, I will not abandon you ever. " Sipping her coffee as she flipped through the pages her mind raced back to the last time they went to fight rats together. She had to remove him from the area in order to finish the job but she had indeed left him alone during that time. Anything could have happened to Seika during that time.

The map she was given was a doozy to look at. It had multiple floors that only went further underground. Parts of each floor of the map were not complete and it just looked like a maze. She didn't tell Seika this but she had another objective which was to complete this map or at least complete it enough for the next group to have a better time going in. Placing her coffee down she picked up half of her breakfast sandwich that was filled with savory meat, cheese, fried egg, and for her, she added a little kimchi for a kick. The flavor of the sandwich put her in a very good mood and she felt like she could take on the world at this point. Food was truly the driving force to take on the hardest tasks sometimes. "You think you ready for this? Let me know now, I care about you and I don't want to put you in anything you don't think you can handle. " She knows how it sounded, but she needed to be sure that he was ready, she wanted him to really think about what was ahead of them.

Eyes opening and the sight and sound of Hitomi entering the medical ward, Seika was a bit awed at the platter of food and beverages she had brought with herself to his bedside. It was actually almost magical if he were honest with himself, the assorted sandwiches, fruits and juices that were offered all smelled and looked wonderful. Smiling at this, he accepted the offering by reaching over to the platter and plucking a fruit off the platter and placing it into his mouth. He'd listen to Hitomi go over the various information about the mission with a quiet appreciation of her preparations. It seemed she had looked over and had managed to take into account any and everything that could have happened on the mission before they embarked. It warmed his heart to know that such a woman cared so much for his wellbeing that she had taken all of the necessary steps to make sure nothing actually happened to him on the mission. Of course she couldn't plan for everything, and he wouldn't hold that against her, it was just... it was nice. To have someone who actually cared for once.

He would let her do all of the talking before finally arising from his bed, his nude body glistening in the sunlight as he walked over to the clothes he had prepared the previous evening before quickly dressing himself in his garbs. It wouldn't take him very long to do so and after he had finished dressing himself, he would nod for Hitomi to follow along as he grabbed his staff from where he had stabbed it into the ground before heading out towards the mission area. Things were going to be easier this time around, he just had to trust the process.

He never answered her question, he only got up, put his clothes on, and headed towards the door. Hitomi took this as confirmation of his resolve so she grabbed a peach, picked up Kusanagi, and followed him. It didn't take long for the pair to make it to their destination. With the population of the rats in this area is literally burned down and cut down by their efforts, the poor bastards didn't have enough time to replace their numbers. They would pass by the first place they had to fight the rats but ultimately go past it. Unlike last time they wouldn't be going down in a bunker, the report says that a rather large tree with a hole big enough to fit a human leads directly into the maze. The hole of that tree had been touched by some magic by an adventure, and that magic causes the rats and whatever else is down there to avoid coming out of it or really being around it. Hitomi would let the silence between the two settle, she didn't have much to say as she mentally prepared herself for what was to come, every wrong thing that could happen to Seika, every little mistake that she could make, all of it was playing like a movie reel. It was like she was carrying a fragile egg into a mosh pit and she couldn't shake the feeling that something would go terribly wrong. Upon reaching the tree she could see that the hole was in fact enchanted by some sort of magic. It glowed faintly so it wouldn't be like they would be going down in the dark, it also looked like they had to slide down which made her wonder if they needed to take a different way out of the place.

Sitting down she grabbed Seika and placed her between her lap, her strength overpowering his and ignoring any resistance he may have put up. Sliding them both down the two hit the bottom with a soft thud. Quickly getting up she produced a light with one of her spells to illuminate their path. From what she could see more than a few small rats were skittering about but overall avoiding them, probably due to the light she was emitting. Quickly walking to her destination, sounds that weren't human or any beast she recognizes began to bounce off the walls, getting closer to the two, she couldn't see anything beyond her light but it felt like the walls were closing in on both of them the further they went. Every now and again Hitomi would slice through a small horde of the rats, making quick work of anything in her path and relying on Seika to watch their backs as she led them forward. It was of course unfortunate when she did her thirty-second check-up for him that he wasn't behind her and panic set in.

Their arrival at the staging area had been rather uneventful, Seika had come across some valuables that likely belonged to some nobodies that they were supposed to return, instead he pocketed them for Jewels later. The passageway was already been cleared by the both of them literally two days ago. As such it was a simple affair of finding the hole they were going to enter through, and being literally manhandled for long enough that he could reach the bottom of the pit. It was at the bottom of their drop however when all things came crashing down for Seika as the inky maw of darkness swallowed them whole.

Many cultures have tried and failed to describe the otherworldly void that surrounded and filled the world around them. It ate at the foundations, peeling and consuming all that were unfortunate to fall within the depths of its maw. It threatened every sentient species with obliteration as it clawed forth. It despised the light that filled the world now, it coveted the growth and knowledge that the denizens of the world have amassed for themselves. It hungered for the knowledge, it yearned for their flesh, their blood, their agony...

The darkness that surrounded Seika was not normal darkness. As an envoy of Sol he was privy to many things. He understood the truth of the world as had been dictated by his god. There had always been a dark force, a dark energy that waited in between the cracks, that seeped through the darkness where Sol's majesty couldn't reach. It wished for nothing but complete destruction yet it also seemed to work to actively assimilate all knowledge that it could come across if only to fuel the never ending march towards obliteration. It was such an unthinking, unfeeling evil that any who came across it would instantly lose their minds to the insanity that was the Deep. The void between voids, the dark swirling chaos that would eventually swallow all. Many Gods, both old and new had fought and struggled against the Deep, they had put their all into containing such a force that had existing long even before Illumin. And at some points, they had succeeded, they had kept the Deep at bay. But like all things in this multiverse, they weren't infallible and their methods weren't indefinite. Eventually the Deep through millennia of patience and constant vigilance had oozed itself through enough cracks to once again affect the greater unknown, to once again flex its influence in a multiverse who had yet to feel its all encompassing might.

To Seika, who was just an emissary of a lesser God, to feel such an eldritch touch grace his very essence was enough to send him into stark insanity. Eyes rolled up into oblivion, he was graced with sights and sensations that no other mortal had experienced ever. Seika could feel the dread this presence inflicted upon him. Humanity was not ready to face this threat. No one entity was ready to face such a thing. They would all die. They would all die. They would all die.
They would all die.
They would all die.
They would all di.e
The wold di.e
The wo.

...

Light.

Light and heat filled Seika as his staff burst to life while within his hands, the presence that had surrounded him, that had consumed him, that had filled his entire being was being pushed by back by that simple pilot flame. Air rushed into overly exerted lungs as he struggled to steady himself, his body clenched in fear and confusion. He knew not what direction he faced, his location in the world, nor how he had gotten here. But he knew he had to run. He had to flee. he had to live. His very life would end if he stayed. He could not stay. Not after feeling that.

Terror gripped the Monk's heart as he began to flee into any direction that would take him. His body tearing through the inky black rats that had swallowed him whole, their bright ruby red eyes staring upon him with looks of hunger and understanding. It was at that point he knew. He understood why these rats, why all of these creatures seemed to be so much... so much more...

He knew not where Hitomi was, but he knew he had to eradicate this place. These... things could not see the light of Sol. If they did, Fiore... no all of Earthland would be wiped from existence.

Pilot flame raging to life, he lifted his staff up above his head, magical energy coursing through his veins, lighting him up in a dazzling show of glowing golden light. His prominence flared as his magical presence eclipsed all who stood before him. The heat in the cavern reached temperatures that would be almost comparable to that as the surface of the Sun itself. The rats before him scurried backwards in fear and understanding. They were no longer facing the scared man. They were facing the Avatar. The cavern shook as his magic reacted to his presence and actions. The cavern's ceiling bursting downwards as a thick beam of light suddenly burst forth to encompass all beneath it. The light seemed unnatural, otherworldly as the Avatar gazed upon those who wished the world around it harm. The golden irises of Seika glowed with a might yet unseen as the staff in his hands began to tilt downwards, as if he were pointing it at the scrambling mass. Unfortunately for this particular extension of the deep, there was no escape.

Silence filled the cavern as the beam of light focused itself upon the rats, sparing the other denizens who called the locale home. Light and heat were suddenly focused upon the mass before a single glowing orb of light dropped within the focused lens of the beam. Upon touching down on the ground in the middle of the swarming mass, the entire cavern blanked from existence. The world turned white as the cavern was essentially nuked from the heavens, erasing all that were there from view. Such a spectacle was visible as far as Era in terms of the glowing lights in the horizon. For Orchidia it was as if a second Sun had appeared in the sky. But for a few scant moments, the light and heat harmed none but what the Avatar deemed as unforgivable in its realm. No natural born creatures, no man-made artifacts, no human's and not itself were even touched by the light nor the heat of the blast. By time Hitomi would come across Seika's slumped form, all traces of the Avatar were gone from his presence leaving just a tired and scarred man behind.

Hitomi Minamoto †
She could smell him, his scent was obvious but she didn't need to smell him to find him. A light so bright filled her eyes enough to pinpoint his location to her. She cursed herself, she didn't know what that light was and she didn't know what was happening to Seika. She felt her world crumbling around her as she lost the only thing she was tasked to protect, the only thing she wanted to protect. Switching between running and lunging to his destination she cut through small and large beats alike, making her way to the nest without even knowing what was ahead, running on pure adrenaline. A little bit of everything was running through her mind, all of the time, while she was steadily and progressively running through rats, mice, and eldritch beings. Pale skin turned bloody red, you'd think she jumped in a pool of red with how she arrived to Seika.

At some point in her blind rage and panic, she found him. A man was tired and scarred but around that man dead every creature that they were supposed to slay. She stood in the nest of the beast. No one else was around and she could only see Seika. Her mind had more questions than answers but her heart was only worried for Seika. Bending down and scooping him up in her eyes ever so carefully, she quickly found her way out of the hell hole and back to her town. She didn't drop him off in those barracks-like last time, this time she brought him to her penthouse suite and took care of him she did. Sending out the report of their mission and labeling it as completed as she should she stayed by Seika's side making sure he was ok before letting him out of her sight as any good mother would.

Wordcount met.
