Kenzo smirked as he received feedback from the now enormous Beowulf’s Axe cutting through the body of the homunculi named Tetranadon. It was just as Masamune’s, speaking wonders about the magnificent axe’s blade more than anything. It was smooth, yet it had a certain elegance to it that was transmitted through the vibrations he received at the hilt. It was a confirmation of the millions of atoms separating as the blade went through its trajectory, unchallenged as if they were clearing a path for it to cross through. Regardless, the artificial beast disappeared in an instant with a stream of shadows flowing out of its core.

The battle was actually exciting, considering the change of scenery that the arena underwent. Kenzo simply hoped the following monsters would also follow the same pattern. ”Let’s go” The man proudly announced as he returned Beowulf’s Axe back to its original size. The spell had sapped a large amount of mana all at once from the warrior, but he still a large reserve for a dozen more beasts.

”Very well. So your grading is B Tier correct? What are the basis for such score?” The mysterious voice asked through the speakers installed all around.

Kenzo crossed his arms while he rested his chin with his right fist. ”Hmm.. If I had to point out the real reason, it would be that the Tetranadon’s strength relies too heavily in the surrounding area where he is. Being an entirely situational beast immediately disqualifies its uses in a real life scenario.” Kenzo referred to the simple fact that they had modified the scenery just for the battle. ”Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure that the carapace at its back is made out of a really hard material and the poison damage it does from its projectiles is no joke, but I still don’t think these things are enough to give it a higher score”

The warrior explained thoroughly his pointers with a serious face. Discussing about such matters was something he’d never expect to do after how his night had started, but he would honestly admit that he was now really into it. Scientific research always sounded like such a tedious thing to do, but now that he’d first experienced field testing made him change his opinion on the matter. ”I also think that it’s attack power should allow it to end opponents with one surprise attack”

”Hmmm. I guess that makes sense. Very well, it shall be noted.” The voice responded with pauses as it took notes. ”Okay. Next monster! Activate the change” The comment this time was directed towards the Rune Knight present in the room. The guy made a salute motion before moving towards a control panel at the far end of the arena. Kenzo wouldn’t have been able to see any of this under normal circumstances since he was below the floor’s ground level in the dug-up fighting pit. However, he had activated once again his White Eye just to scout in case the real man behind the speakers’ voice had decided to come into range.

Unluckily for Kenzo, that was not the case. Instead, the rune knight moved along his boss’s orders, pulling a lever out of the control panel near the edge of the arena. In an instant, the magic illusion that had transformed the place into somewhat looking like a swamp disappeared, leaving behind the barren magic concrete of the arena floor. It was quite impressive to say the least, how much detail was put into the illusion. Whoever the unknown contractor was possessed frightening illusory magic spells and skills.

Either way, it was not time to be impressed. The mechanisms of the arena twisted and turned once again, starting to transform the arena back to its original shape with only 1 level. The warrior at least took it as a hint. The fact that uneven terrain was removed could only mean the following monster would actually favor flat areas. The only thing that came to Kenzo’s mind was a monster that could move impossibly fast. Fast enough that it needed a flat terrain in order to work best.

After all, his experience in a mercenary company had taught him about battle tactics. The only reason any given party would decide to lure an enemy into an open field would be when they are confident enough that they will have cavalry superiority. The Bellan’s simple mind was completely attuned to fighting and battle, so while it might have not been the best of inferences, he was spot on in this case. A smile crept up his lips as soon as the metallic gates opened, and the next monster came out of it. It was a beast he knew all too well: a large, oversized horse-like creature with a horn: Dhuilin.

To be exact, it at least held a striking resemblance to Dhuilin. Shadow runner, Kenzo’s own Dhuilin looked quite similar to the beast coming out of the gate, for the exception that this monster was towering above 3 meters. It was way bigger than Kenzo’s mount, but it still shared the horn trait from its counterpart. Even so, the warrior had never seen a Dhuilin quite like the one that came out. It had lightning markings all around its hide, and its face looked a bit more dragon-like in appearance. Regardless of that, the monster looked quite dangerous, so he needed to take the following fight seriously.

As Kenzo prepared himself to regain his posture, the monster immediately disappeared from his sight. In the blink of an eye, the warrior felt an air gust blowing past him almost out of nowhere. The male turned around only to find the monster pawing at the ground with its hooves. Kenzo blinked twice still trying to process what had just happened. However, a hot feeling coming out of the right side of his torso caught his attention before he could continue. Placing his hand there, he found something he didn’t quite expect: blood.

”What the-“ Words of disbelief came out of his mouth as he turned his head back once again, noticing this time the readied tip of the monster’s horn. Kenzo’s eyes widened in surprise. He knew he wasn’t the fastest person in the block, but this was the first time he was honestly caught off guard by his enemy’s speed. ”Impressive right?” The voice spoke through the speakers. It was quite a novelty, considering it had remained silent all the previous fights when Kenzo completely and utterly destroyed their beasts. The male decided against chuckling at the obvious pride of the person that had hired him, wanting to avoid hurting his feelings.

”There’s no need to feel surprised. The Kirin are some of the fastest creatures in the world. They say they were born of lightning hitting the ground, making them the first users of lightning magic. There is no way a mere mortal like you could ever keep up with them and their speed.”

Kenzo was honestly wondering if the guy that hired him was an idiot. He had previously announced he wouldn’t be getting any intel on the beasts he would face. Yet, here he was spilling the beans.

Either way, it didn’t matter to Kenzo if the guy wanted to break his own rules. After all, it simply made Kenzo’s job easier. He now had intel, so he wouldn’t let the same mistake happen twice. Still, the damage was already done. His sides were starting to bleed, considering the Kirin had made a wound of a considerable size. It had been a long time since Kenzo last bled, but more than preoccupy him it simply managed to make him more excited. The feeling of risking his life against a superior opponent was something he was starting to forget. Maybe the merc ought to find more danger out there to fulfill his desires for this thrill.

For the moment, he would need to first find a way how to deal with the Kirin’s unbelievable speed. He knew he could take quite a few of those attacks, considering it was the strongest blow he could deal, but he didn’t want to start bleeding too much. The seal in the swordsman’s shoulder weakened the more blood he spilled, weakening the strength of the curse, and allowing the demon sealed inside him to come out. Things always got ugly when that happened.

Kenzo prepared his guard for the next incoming attack. Even if he couldn’t see it, he could at least guard his vitals. Considering the speed with which the Kirin moved the first time, Kenzo doubted it could actually maneuver around too much mid dash. His theory would be put to the test almost immediately, announced by the Kirin’s large horn that started to glow. It was as if it was charging with energy, becoming brighter and brighter to the point of turning almost blinding. Bracing himself for impact, Kenzo grabbed his axe and moved the blade to cover his torso. In a blink, the Kirin had disappeared once again, only for the warrior to feel the same gust of wind blowing past him.

The merc instantly turned his head down, looking for any new injuries. However, there were none. His plan, albeit a simple one had paid off and he’d won. Or at least, the little gamble he’d made. It was still too early to sing victory. Kenzo had once again failed to notice the beast rushing past him. It would make no difference if he couldn’t hit him or deal a fatal blow. The Kirin once again pawed off.

Bursting out of his spot, Kenzo decided to shift into the offensive. Grabbing Beowulf’s Axe with a single hand, the mercenary instantly lunged towards the monster. The distance between the two of them was immediately cut short, not a single second had occurred by the time the Kirin was within Kenzo’s striking range.

Throwing his whole weight into the strike with the twist of his shoulder, Kenzo swung at the beast in a downward slash. It was now almost impossible to escape. The warrior’s trademark smile of confidence painted his lips as he was sure to finish the beast with this attack. However, it wouldn’t come so easily. Instead, the Kirin disappeared in an instant, leaving an after image behind it that disappeared as the axe slashed through thin air. Furthermore, Kenzo was suddenly caught in a cloud of lightning. Numerous attacks came from all directions, cutting and piercing his body in merely a fraction of a second.

The attack stopped as soon as it starting, leaving the battered mercenary surprised by the strength of the beast. The attacks were quite powerful, considering its speed of course. However, they lacked the punch they needed to do pose any serious damage.

Yet, this didn’t mean he could be taking any more hits. Kenzo was getting dangerously close to the realm of suffering real damage and being in trouble, but he still had an ace under his sleeve. Without hesitating for a second, the male slammed Beowulf’s Axe to the ground once again. He had previously used this spell as soon as the fight against the three Barrang-like beasts had started, but maybe it was more suited against this kind of opponent.

The Kirin tried to get away of the ice magic expanding from the axe. However, the arena was simply too small to allow it to continue. Seeing its end coming closer, the beast decided to make a last-ditch effort to take the mercenary back. Its horn started glowing in its iridescent light once again, signaling a new attack was coming. However, Kenzo’s spell had now made its job. Contrary to the other attacks, Kenzo was now able to see the beast clearly dashing towards him, readying its horn for a piercing attack. The ice magic coming out of the blade had managed to slow it considerably, allowing for the mercenary to extend his arm and bring out Masamune from his pocket dimension ring. Easily calculating the Kirin’s trajectory, he slashed the beast in half as it moved past him, killing it in an instant.
