”Haha! That’s more like it. Keep them coming along!” Kenzo casually said as the two lifeless bodies of the armored homunculi slowly disintegrated in a stream of shadows. The warrior stretched both arms above his head, resting the top of Beowulf’s Axe head on the ground. It was a magnificent weapon, fit to be owned by someone like the Hero of old. The merc had read about the Nine Heroes after he’d found Beowulf’s Axe. As he came to know the tale of old for the first time from a book that he’d found during his travels, he started to wonder more and more how in the world one of the criminal organizations of Hosenka had come across such a powerful item.

It was honestly relieving the guy he’d took it from was as weak as he was. After becoming the owner of the blade, the warrior knew exactly how much power it possessed, he could feel it every time he wielded it. However, it was also true that there was some part of it that would be too much for just anyone to handle. That was the reason the warrior had been able to best the guy so easily.

However, if he’d only encountered just a more competent owner, things would have turned very differently back then. Regardless, the past was in the past and Kenzo was now the rightful owner of the enchanted axe. He still preferred wielding Masamune if he was being honest; swords were simply the natural choice for someone that had fought with them for so long. However, he was well versed in armed combat, and knew how to hold his ground with a variety of them.

A certain idea lingered in the back of his head, one he was still wrestling to decide if it was something achievable or just a pipe dream. As he now experienced a thrilling battle against the two homunculi paladins he was starting to lean more to the former. Wouldn’t it be badass to become the undisputed weapon master in the continent? His goal was to become the strongest swordsman in existence either way, so maybe that could be a suitable step two for the warrior. Alas, he was starting to digress. For now, he would need to concentrate in what was in front of him. For the moment, the voice from the unknown person was remaining too quiet.

”Ahem.. Was that maybe too much this time?” The warrior scratched the back of his head, wondering if he’d actually be getting in some trouble. He was enjoying himself now, so he forgot for a moment why he even fought against the homunculi. The mission was the same as the first one he got, but it already seemed to have been so long ago. Kenzo had been contracted by an unknown person – the one who Kenzo was addressing – in order to test the strength of some of the artificial monsters they had created. Apparently, they were trying to create a new breed of monsters for the crown’s personal security. However, the technology was still in its infancy, so it was not as easy as it sounded to create and test their strength.

Yet, Kenzo had managed to defeat all of the beasts they’d sent his way with ease. This could only mean two things. One: the homunculi they had created were simply too weak. Two: Kenzo was simply too strong. Regardless of which it was, Kenzo was sure the two paladins he had just previously fought and defeated, would be able to give most people a run for their money.

Yet, the reality remained that he was still able to dispose of them without much trouble. In fact, Kenzo hadn’t even needed to summon any of the rest of his equipment, which actually managed to increase his fighting potential exponentially. ”Tche! This is nothing. Those worthless failures are nothing to lose your minds about, they were definitely designed to be beaten so easily.” The unknown owner of the voice spoke once again. The words would echo around the room through speakers. Kenzo had first thought it was inside his head, but for some reason it seemed like they had switched from using telepathy magic to speakers. The merc was honestly intrigued by this change, but he wondered what the reason was. Maybe he was running out of mana?

It was a possible option. Activating all those homunculi would definitely be straining to anybody, regardless of how big of a mana pool they had. Even if they didn’t have to fill the core entirely with magic, activating one of those monsters was hard work. Either way, the male’s conjectures would have to wait, since it seemed like the voice wanted to continue speaking. ”Anyway… Let us commence with the next experiment”

”The next couple of rounds you shall be facing against a new series of monsters we’ve been recently developing. They are truly monstro-id, nothing like the humanoid paladins you just fought against.” the man explained. Kenzo wondered if they’d be similar to the four Barrang like beasts head previously defeated by now.

”*Ahem* As I was saying, we’re planning on progressively test their physical capabilities and special abilities. They’ve been designed with that as a purpose, so it will be your job to evaluate them in order to place a danger threat to each of them.” The voice pridefully announced. It seemed like they were no longer trying to defeat Kenzo by now, instead asking for his opinion in the matter.

”No questions over here.” The male answered, confidently straightening his back, puffing his chest out and resting both hands against the hilt of the gigantic axe that was still touching the ground.

”Good. We shall commence with the experiment then. Don’t worry, we will be handsomely compensating you for all your efforts.”

The rune knight that had remained silent throughout all this time chimed in. ”That’s right. We’ve got the money for your reward over here. So don’t worry.”

Kenzo smiled at the comment. ”Fine by me then” He didn’t honestly care what they threw at him, he was simply enjoying the moment. Even better, he was becoming rich out of these bastards. It was sick the amount of money they were throwing at the warrior to try out their little experiments, but you wouldn’t ever hear him complain for getting paid. Rich people could waste their money however they pleased for all he cared.

”Very well then. Let us begin with the next monster.” The voice was heard out of the speakers. At the same time, the ground began to shake and tremble beneath the blue haired Bellan. Kenzo looked around trying to find out what was going on, only to notice the fighting pit was starting to spin around itself. A complex mechanism seemed to have been activated, slowly transforming the arena as different height levels started to form out of large plaques made out of the same material as the floor. Kenzo widened his stance in order to maintain his center of gravity, he wanted to avoid falling from all the moving around. It wouldn’t be cool. After a couple of seconds, the arena stopped moving.

Kenzo was now standing in the middle of a riverbank recreation. Water had started flowing out of the walls and filled a section of the fighting arena for a height of around 2 meters. Magic was casted over the ground to create the illusion of being in the midst of a lush forest. A river appeared in the middle of the place, ending at the previously mentioned artificial lake that was forming.

The male was honestly wondering what the hell was going on. It was definitely way too different from the fights he’d had before, but the same fact was actually something exciting. Whatever they were planning, he was at least bound for some more fun.

”The next beast is called a Tetranadon. It has already been released into the fighting pit. Good luck”

Kenzo tilted his head to the side in confusion. Had he said that the monster had already been released? He knew he hadn’t misheard. However, the beast was nowhere to be seen and nowhere to be heard. Kenzo readied his weapon taking a precaution stance. Judging from the entire ambience they’d carefully built, it was obvious that this monster was strongly related to the surrounding scenery.

It was honestly starting to get eerily quiet. Kenzo even debated in his head if he should activate his white eye in order to snuff the monster out. But he reasoned it would honestly kill all of the joy and fun in the fight. After all, as far as he knew the power he’d awakened was not something that people normally possessed, meaning the entire objective of classifying the beasts in how threatening they would be against the average person would be completely pointless.

For that reason, he simply decided to rely on his natural instincts and other senses. His concentration had now risen to a maximum level, his ears perking upwards at the slightest sound coming out from the water at the lake. It seemed like there was something moving inside, slowly, approaching little by little the swordsman.

Kenzo switched Beowulf’s Axe grip to his left hand, encroaching ever so slowly towards the edge of the water himself. Camouflaged between the rocks and logs that were casted by the illusion magic, something that seemed like a rock was floating at Kenzo. It looked almost immobile but having stared at it for a while made the warrior notice it moved.

Springing out of his place, Kenzo jumped towards it as he prepared a downward strike with the axe. Kenzo was sure the beast would be cut in half just like the armored paladin had done earlier. However, he was surprised as a searing pain crossed his back. He didn’t even notice the second the attack was thrown his way, meaning he had no opportunity of evading it. A blunt impact threw him flying through the air a couple of meters away from his spot. He was already in the air after the jump, so he landed quite far away from his original position.

Turning his head around towards the location of the attack, he managed to catch a glimpse of the beast before crashing against the ground. A large muddy boulder had been fired his way. The force behind the attack was actually decent, but nothing that could explain the damage he had taken. Twisting quickly his head to look at his back while he was still in the ground, Kenzo noticed that his clothes were starting to melt.

This was the secret behind the monster. It had been a long time since Kenzo had seen this kind of magic.

Poison magic was one of the most dangerous kinds to fight against being a close quarters fighter. It was a pain in the ass to deal with, since he currently had now way of avoiding how to breathe. While he could still summon out Masamune and wipe any spell thrown his way with ease, he had already decided against that. Kenzo noticed how powerless he could get to be whenever he was pried out of his weapon of choice. Perhaps this was a sign to stop relying so much in Masamune and sharpen once again his anti magic skills.



Either way, the reason Kenzo had first failed to notice the beast was now apparent. If he could describe it in an easy way, he would say that it looked like a mix between an overgrown duck and a turtle. It had a large belly and its entire body was covered in moss. Considering the area they were now in, it was no surprise he had lost it as he concentrated in the floating rock.

However, he now had the beast in sight. The overgrown duck jumped with a dive, trying to dig beneath the ground. Yet, the mercenary would not let it do as it pleased. Incorporating quickly to his feet, Kenzo activated one of Beowulf’s Axe’s spells that he’d yet to try in real combat. ”Victor of Grendel’s Mother’s Massacre” Kenzo tried his best to say the words as quietly as possible. He needed to say them in order for the spell to activate, but he was to shy to say them out loud since they were kind of cringey.

Regardless, the important thing is that the axe in his hand immediately quadrupled in size. The attack that would have previously missed cleaved through the environment and cut the monster in half.
