”These things are not even worth my time.” Kenzo mocked the unknown voice’s owner with a smirk. ”I’m not sure if you got enough data out of that one, but at least my job here is done” Kenzo finished his remark as he lifted the unworldly big axe he held in his right hand from the ground. With a nudge of his wrist, Kenzo broke the pillar of ice that had formed from the spot the blade made contact with the ground previously. The scene was quite impressive to be honest. It was if a blast of frost magic had exploded with the axe as its epicenter, completely covering the huge fighting hall where the warrior stood deep beneath the grand palace of Mercurius.

Frozen in place, three crystalline, ice statutes gleamed with the flickering lights of the lacrimas placed by the walls. They were the sole remains of the triad of beasts that the mercenary had just defeated in an instant. Furthermore, walls, ceiling and ground were now covered in a thick sheet of ice, spikes covering every inch of their surface indiscriminately, except for the spot where the Blue Pegasus swordsman stood. It was a very strong spell.

The voice remained silent for a couple of seconds, making Kenzo wonder if the owner had been caught in the blast, and had been frozen in its place as well. However, this proved not to be the case when it finally spoke again, albeit with a hint of irritation in his words. ”J-just as I expected… It would have been a pity if you couldn’t even do this much after all.” The slight hesitation in the voice suggested they were quite confident on their artificial beasts’ power. ”Hoh? Were they really such small fry then? I thought you guys wanted me to test the prowess of some of your strongest beasts.”

The irreverence of his words definitely struck a chord of pride within the voice. ”Hmph!! That’s nothing to be so surprised about. These were simply some tests, nothing like the REAL beasts we’ve prepared today.” Kenzo rose a brow as he lifted the large golden axe and rested it against his right shoulder. ”Really now? I thought the test was over after I punched the life out of the huge monster you guys left to rampage outside. At the very least, that was the idea I got from you”

The voice remained silent once again. The rune knight member that had scouted him previously was frozen in place. Not because of the spell the blue haired mercenary had previously casted, but rather from the impudence he was showing to whoever his big wig superior was. Kenzo still didn’t know who he was dealing with, but he didn’t care. The only important thing for the moment was exceeding their expectations in a way that they’d be compelled to reveal their identity and hopefully, allow him to sneak inside the Grand Cathedral of Illumin’s secret Vault.

”You-little…” Kenzo wondered if the voice had actually spoken anything, considering the previous message was whispered almost without thinking. ”Ahem… Nevertheless, you’ve made a good job. Considering you already have your pay I believe this transaction is over now.”

Kenzo nodded with a smile, knowing full well that it was still far from over. ”Well, if you ever have another job that requires someone with my skills please don’t hesitate to make your request come my way with a pay proposition.” Kenzo started walking as if he was leaving the place. ”After all, you guys have been good clients to far. So, if you’d excuse….”

”WAIT!!!” The Rune Knight that had remained silent so far interfered hurriedly. Kenzo shifted his head towards the man, feigning he didn’t know what he was about to be asked. ”Yes?”

The knight took his hand inside his cloak and took out yet another bag full of jewels. It was roughly the same size of the last one, so Kenzo knew before hand how much money would be inside. It was obvious the people that had brought him so far wouldn’t be satisfied with the little information the artificial beasts had given them.

”We would like to hire you again then. As my master said, we still have stronger beasts we’d like to test against someone of your skill level.” Kenzo stopped in his tracks, lowering the axe yet again while he rested both hands atop the end of its hilt. ”Aaah. It’d be my pleasure to do business with you!”

Kenzo extended his hand as he motioned for the rune knight to throw the pouch. Following up with the mercenary’s signal, the knight threw the bag of jewels for him to catch. Kenzo explored its contents making sure they weren’t trying to cheat him. ”Okay! Bring the next ones!”

”Heh. I hope you’re ready for this.” Kenzo immediately deactivated the mana consumption he was still channeling through the axe. The icy scenery completely shattered in a second, dissolving into dust as if it had never existed. Even the three frozen monsters disappeared along, leaving behind only three glowing stones in the ground. They were their homunculi cores, the only reason they existed. Artificial beasts were actually a frightening thing, considering the only thing needed to reactivate them was coursing magical energy through their cores. While the mana consumption was enormous, it came to the benefit of it being able to regenerate the entire beasts indefinitely as long as the core was intact.

Kenzo considered for a second destroying the three cores along with the ice but decided against it. After all, the Bellan was trying to get in his clients’ good graces.

”Very well. Release the paladin corps” The mysterious voice resounded before the iron gate opened once again. Two large, armored figures came out marching from inside the tunnel leading to the insides of the fighting pit. Kenzo instantly recognized their appearance similar to the homunculi that Merlin had built, making him wonder if they were just copies

The two homunculi held spears, towering at around 2 meters each, their weapons easily surpassed their sizes. Kenzo instinctively put up his guard. He knew how strong Abbadon actually was, he’d seen him before in battle. Even if the warrior was exponentially stronger now than what he was back then, he still felt uneasy. The two monsters in front of him marched in sync, slowly entering the arena before stopping with a slam of their lances in the ground. Their armors shone in the lacrima lit arena as if they had life of their own. One of them wore an azure armor, gilded in gold details, while the other one wore a black armor with silver linings. If there were humans inside the armor wouldn’t be too much of a problem. However, these homunculi would not feel blunt damage, at least not until their armor was completely destroyed; so that’s what the Bellan’s plan would be for the moment.

”Attack!!!” The voice commanded them from its hidden spot. The two watchers immediately sprung into action. The blue armored watcher sprung in front of its partner, taking the humongous lance behind him before unleashing a strong slash towards the BP mercenary.

Meanwhile, the second one made use of the attack to lunge at his side, grabbing his spear with both hands and taking a high stance, unleashing a flurry of thrusting attacks that would come precisely after the first slash arced away. Kenzo was honestly caught off guard. He didn’t expect to be met with a coordinated attack by the two armored figures. Barely having time to lift up his axe, the warrior managed to block the first attack with his own axe. The blow was strong, but Kenzo’s physical prowess was out of this world. Managing to withstand the first strike, he caught wind of the thrusting attacks with his peripheral vision.

Twisting his torso to the left, he managed to avoid the first attack just barely. The long blade of the black armored monster’s spear tore a hole through his shirt. Without wasting time, the monster retracted the blade for another attack. Kenzo was still locked with the blue armored paladin’s lance, so he wouldn’t have another chance at escaping an attack. Shifting his weight to his left knee, the warrior turned around as he pushed at the lance with all his might, managing to break the lance’s lock,

The strength of his parry was enough to throw the blue armored fighter a couple of meters back, giving Kenzo enough space to carry on with his swing and intercept the second thrusting attack at the side. Beowulf’s Axe caught the long lance mid-air, snapping it in half as if it was made of paper. From the sound it made when it fell to the ground, it was obvious that it was of the finest metal available, so it only spoke wonders about the legendary axe.

On his part, the black armored paladin seemed to have short circuited for a moment, given the fact that it still continued to go through with his attack as if the blade had never broken in the first place. Kenzo smiled as he saw a perfect opportunity to shift back into the offensive. Ducking under the follow through of the now broken lance, Kenzo made use of the momentum from the swing to continue spinning, grabbing the spear as it came back with his free hand. Tightening his grip against the metallic pole, Kenzo pulled at it, bringing the homunculi closer towards him. The beast struggled for just a second, before being completely overpowered.

Not letting go of the spear, the black armor made its way to the warrior’s range. Kenzo prepared his axe to swing at the incoming enemy. However, the azure fighter had once again rejoined the fight, approaching Kenzo with an overhead swing, aimed at the arm that expected its ally.

Kenzo decided to change objectives, letting go of the polearm from which he pulled, avoiding the attack completely. However, it was now too late for the blue armored homunculi. The momentum from such a grand attack was impossible to stop. As soon as the lance cut through the air past Kenzo’s eye level, a smirk grew on the warrior’s face.

Kenzo slashed diagonally from top to bottom, cleaving through the armor as easily as it did through the lance. It was definitely sturdier than the metal from the polearm, but it was all the same for Kenzo. The homunculi froze for a second in place, before the majestic armor suddenly slid towards the ground in two. It was a clean cut, severing the torso from the lower body along with an entire arm. Yet, there was no blood flying through the air. Instead, a black mist burst out of it.

The black armored paladin was completely unmoved by its comrade’s demise, something that clearly separated artificial beasts from living beings. Making use of the proximity, the armored monster lowered to pick up the weapon of the now disappearing lump of shadows. However, there was no way Kenzo was going to make this so easy. Lunging from his spot and towards the monster, the mercenary closed the distance before the two just as it started to lift its head back.

The empty helmet rocked back like a slingshot the moment it was met with the blue haired man’s knee. Kenzo rammed himself against the armor, aiming at the head. A loud crack could be heard just before the helmet was completely severed from the rest of the body. The head piece flew through the air before crashing against the wall a couple of meters away from its body. The now headless armor tried to reincorporate itself, only to be met with Beowulf’s Axe edge. Kenzo had thrown the armor to the ground, and he now stepped on it with his left foot. Slowly, the warrior turned his head around to face the rune knight that observed the spectacle. Inch by inch, the axe dug deeper into the black armor at chest level, something that would undoubtedly slowly bleed an enemy out.

As shadows started streaming out of the lifeless body, Kenzo flashed a smile at the rune knight before completely crushing the magnificent armor piece, completely dispelling the remaining magic that kept the monster together. As he defeated two rounds of monsters, something told the man this was just the beginning.
