[Continued from a quest]

Atani clutched her aching shoulder as she tread through the forest just outside of Hargeon. The fabric she had used to slow the bleeding was becoming full. Her fingertips touched the material, and upon lifting them, she could see they were tainted red. Ideally, in this sort of situation she would have gone to the doctor's or a healer-- a stab wound was no laughing matter-- but elves were creatures of determination. For Atani, this was teamed with an infallible stubbornness. It was a combination that resulted in situations like these, but it also bore plentiful fruits of her labor.

Even now, she refused to get help, for why would she? She was a healer. She had been able to use healing spells just fine when she practiced nature magic. There was no reason her magic would fail her now, and if she couldn't bring herself to heal a stab wound, how could she ever expect herself to be a successful mage? One way or another, Atani was determined to get her water magic to work, or she would pass out of blood loss. Whichever came first. She at least had to make an effort.

It was why she had retreated to the forest. Being a Wood Elf, the trees were her element, not the sands on the beach or the salty waves. She came across a freshwater stream in the woods and bent down. Her legs were shaky and her head swam during the process, but once she was safely on the forest floor, the weakness subsided. She carefully undid the fabric around her shoulder to reveal the fresh stab wound she received from some pirates just an hour before. She cupped a hand beneath the river water and brought it up to her flesh. Using a combination of that infused with her water magic, she tried to heal her wound.

Breathe in... tâd, nêl, canad. Breathe out... tâd, nêl, canad.

Atani counted the length of her breaths in her head. A classic technique to maintain concentration she learned in Athalran. Mana flowed into the water that enveloped her hand. She could feel her magic doing something, but her spell provided no indication of such. There was not so much as a glow emanating from the water that slowly circled her hand. All the water did was cleanse her gash, though that was by no means magical. Anyone could flush a wound with liquids, be it a mage or a non-mage. All her magic did was provide a level of control that was impossible to attain without equipment of sorts. Nothing more, nothing less.

Still, she would not yet give up.

Breathe in... tâd, nêl, canad. Breathe out... tâd, nêl, canad.

She attempted the breathing technique once more, this time consciously ebbing her mana into the water, timing it with each breath. Her magical energy came as pulses. Each breath, each pulse, shaped the delicate stream of water into something that was more than just a gloopy blob surrounding her hand. The process elongated it into a stream, gradually stretching the water. As it grew in length, it shrunk in width, until it became something that reminded Atani of a snake. It spiraled around her body, the head of this 'snake,' or the tip of the stream, feeding into her bloody wound.

The elf began to feel her pain subside. Slowly, but surely, her spell was doing its magic. She concentrated more mana into what now was a spiral of water. Still maintaining her breathing technique, with each breath, with each pulse (she found it better to repeat the phrase), the water stopped forming its shape, but instead glowed in tandem to the same beat.

With her slow yet steady mastery of the spell, the elf showing the utmost concentration through it all, the pulsating glow did not pulse any longer. The glow remained steady, and the water too spiraled with ease. Its form did not waver with her breaths, and instead became the steady stream it had always meant to be, the only movement being that caused by the nature of water in and of itself. Showing no more sign of being controlled by an inexperienced user, the spell did its work. The bleeding stopped. A wound that would have required stitches repaired itself seamlessly, leaving no sign that it had ever been there, not even so much as the faintest of scars.

Atani breathed a sigh of relief. She washed her hands clean of blood in the river and tested out her shoulder. She could move it freely. There was not even a ghost of pain leftover from the stab wound the pirate had inflicted upon her (with a considerably sharp dagger no less) just a couple hours ago. Zimra, her pet lemur, whom she had forgotten had even been there while she was practicing her concentrated breathing techniques, nuzzled against her neck. He was happy to see that his owner was healed... The elf hadn't even realized how worried he must have been to see her bleed so much, and after becoming so attached to her as well. Animals could sense danger. They knew when others were in pain.

"I'm sorry to worry you, Zimra," she said, scratching the winged lemur behind the ears. He chirped happily in reply which brought a smile to the elf's face. It was at that moment where she realized that her subconscious had actually called Zimra a pet, and had called herself an owner. Well... She supposed that made it official.

Who was she kidding. She knew deep in her heart that there was no way Zimra was going to leave her from the very beginning, and there was no way she was going to leave Zimra either. The only possible deterrent was if Zimra's original owner showed up, though the likelihood of that was astronomically low. The bond the two of them shared clicked the moment the little rascal poked its head out of the burlap sack she retrieved from the pirates.

"So, Zimra, what do you think we should do now? I think I'm kinda on a roll with this water magic, don't you?"

He didn't understand what she was saying, of course. That was only to be expected of the little winged lemur. Once her voice ceased to make any more noise, the creature became distracted by a squirrel darting through the fallen leaves strewn across the forest floor. Zimra, being the playful flying lemur he was, chased after it with haste.

"Zim, don't-- !" Atani cut herself off. Actually, that might not have been a bad idea of his. It gave her an idea for a spell. "Actually, never mind. Just keep on playing."

She said that last bit more to herself so as not to distract Zimra from his game of tag with the squirrel. With the thickness of the leaves and foliage in conjunction with the minuscule size of the animals, it was difficult to keep an eye on the animals as they played. Perhaps there was some way her water magic could aid with that tracking. If only she could just...

The breathing technique had worked so well last time, she decided to try it yet again with the new spell she had in mind, but would not as extensively rely on it this time around.

Breathe in... tâd, nêl, canad. Breathe out... tâd, nêl, canad.

She closed her eyes. Remembering one of the forms she was taught in her elven home, she raised her fist to about chin level. She raised two fingers such that they aligned vertically with her lips. She tried to block out as many senses as she could. With her eyes shut, the only thing she could tell of her surroundings was that they were illuminated by the sunlight, which was just as useful as recognizing it was daytime. The sounds of the rustling leaves and tree branches deafened to a low ambience. The scent of the forest was just as dull as it was in Athalran where she became accustomed to the smell each and every day. The only thing she wanted isolated in her sensory field was the molecules of water dispersed throughout the air.

A blue magic circle glowed beneath her feet-- that Atani could tell due to the increased brightness sensed behind her eyelids. And there it was. A ripple. A vibration. She could feel movement coming from behind. She turned around to see Zimra now fleeing from the squirrel who was actively participating in this game of tag Zim had wanted to start. Grinning, Atani spun around and forced herself to tear her eyes away from the animals. Now, with her eyes open and senses fully awakened, she tried to see if she could pinpoint the vibrations without its signal being interfered by anything else. Once again, she felt that similar feeling. A ripple in the moisture surrounding the air, which was plentiful due to the stream she was next to. This time, it was coming from her left. She turned to find a deer nibbling a plant. It had not even made audible footsteps to distract her.

Seeing as her spell was a great success, Atani saw no need to continue practicing it. Confident she would be able to replicate its impacts over an extended period of time, she dispelled her act of sensory based magic. The blue magic circle beneath her feet faded, and she lost all touch with the water molecules in the air. Her power of sensing vibrations via water was no more. Although she was able to do that sort of spell with ease in the moment, she was still a bit worried for how it would turn out in the heat of battle. Those situations were difficult to replicate in training instances such as these, though with enough practice, Atani was sure that even when facing off enemies, she would be able to concentrate well enough to utilize sensory spells. In fact, it should theoretically almost become second nature to her. Once she became a strong enough mage, spells like those might be among the most trivial in her repertoire.

However, when learning new magics, it was always a good idea to start with the basics. Not that she hadn't already mastered the basics-- Atani would classify learning to walk on water and breathing underwater a clear mastery of the basics for her element-- but there were still more techniques she wanted to learn how to do before trying yet another healing spell. For ultimately, that was the type of spell she wanted to have the strongest control over and wield the most power for.

One thing she needed to know how to do was manipulate the properties of water. Adjust its polarity, its thickness, its consistency... State of matter was probably out of the question. Ice, though fundamentally H2O, was still an element elves for whatever reason failed to be able to control.

Although changing its state of matter was impossible for the time being, Atani decided to at least try and take inspiration from one of its states: ice. Specifically, she wanted to see if she could replicate its slippery nature. It was doable, in her opinion. After all, people slipped on wet spots all the time, perhaps just as frequently as they did ice. There was no doubt in her mind that she could magically augment that property of water to do the same on virtually any surface, be it rough like concrete or smooth like tile.

This was going to be an extremely easy spell to master. Atani could already tell. It was far simpler than the other spells she tried. Plus, she essentially already had the basic formation down. It would likely feel the same in terms of manipulation as her water whip, something she mastered so long ago with such ease. The only difference was, she had to keep in mind that the spell also had to have the additional benefit (or detriment, for that matter) of being rather slippery. Should be simple enough.

Atani started with a similar motion to how she utilized her water whip. However, she wasn't exactly slinging forth a whip to knock someone back. Instead, she flicked her wrist forward, pointing in the direction where she wanted the water to go. With a wet splash, the water spread across the once dry river rocks, the ones that were exposed to the sunlight rather than being directly alongside the running water. To test her workmanship, the elf gingerly stepped upon the wet rocks. Just from moving one foot back and forth, she could tell that the spot was indeed slippery, even moreso than what would be expected of wet rocks. As would be expected from the power of magic.

And now... for her final spell. A healing one, but one far grander than the one from before. Rather than healing a specific target such as herself, she wanted this spell to be able to heal several of her allies if necessary. It would have to encompass a much larger area than what she was used to, but Atani was sure that she could manage. With each new spell she attempted that day, she grew more and more comfortable with utilizing her magic. It was just like using her bow and arrow again. Even after months of being unable to shoot, she still had the touch. After months of being unable to heal, she was able to do so just that day. She could definitely handle an area of effect type of thing.

The first thought that came to the elf's mind was rain. With water elemental magic, rain could fall on all who she wanted healed, instantly healing them of any injuries. Yes, that could work out very well for what she had in mind...

Atani whistled for Zimra to fly back to her. The lemur glided back to perch on her shoulder. All settled, it started licking a small cut on its leg. "Aw, did that squirrel do that?" Atani asked, looking at the cut. It didn't appear to be deep at all and would likely heal just fine on its own, but it did at least serve as a marker for how her new spell turned out since her own injuries were already healed.

"I got this, Zim." Atani reached her hand into the sky, because that just seemed right for summoning a downpour. Just as she willed, raindrops fell from the sky, covering an area denoted by a rather large magic circle. The rain fell upon her and Zimra, though it oddly did not soak their clothes. She felt the cool drops of water hit her skin, but soon after they vanished. She inspected Zimra's cut and saw that it too was completely healed. Another spell learned.
