Mikajia
He had two fights to go till he would be finished with this tournament. Thankfully they had a stand set up that sold simple health and mana potions to help fighters get rejuvenated between their fights. After all, it wouldn’t be very entertaining if the finale came along, and both or one of the contestants were too exhausted to actually fight. Plus, it was much more realistic then, to say that someone actually won, if both of the fighters could actually fight to their fullest potential. This was a relatively new feature, something that had been suggested multiple times, but constantly declined by people too afraid to lose their title, even though until recently, it really wasn’t all that impressive.

After his last fight, he wasn’t actually hurt, having managed to dodge the few attacks his opponent had sent his way, but Mikajia had needed to heavily rely on his magic to win that battle. It wasn’t a particularly honorable way of winning, but he knew that if he had allowed himself to trade physical blows with the werewolf, the beast would have stood a much higher chance of winning their fight. Fully transformed werewolves received massive boosts to their physical abilities, and possessed impressive resistances to magical and physical attacks.

If Mikajia wanted to stand a real chance of winning, he knew he would need to keep his distance, and constantly pelt the beast with magic until one of his spells managed to get through, then land a hit with his dagger. Once the beast was deafened, blinded and bound, it would be all too easy to knock him out. He sent a heavy kick to the side of the beast’s head and sent him sliding across the floor, completely unconscious. He had been the victor, but that battle had drained over half of his mana.

Mikajia
There would be no way in hell that he could make it to the final fight at this rate, if most of the fighters were now using magic. So, even though they charged astronomical prices for their potions, Mikajia had to suck it up and purchase a mana potion. Once he drank it, he could feel his entire mana reserve being replenished. And satisfied with the effect, he made his way back to the stands to observe the next few fights before his. As the tournament was nearing its conclusion, only the true fighters were left in the ring now.

From what Mikajia could tell, each of them were close to his actual skill level, but he didn’t think any of them actually surpassed him. However, that wasn’t to say that they still weren’t hiding their true skill level. They had done that so far to keep their opponents on their toes throughout the tournament so far. The only reason he didn’t think that was actually the case now, was due to how few opponents that were left. A fighter would have to be exceptionally talented to have hidden their true strength and power up to this point. And honestly, unless you were a top tier fighter, it really wasn’t the best option when surrounded by other almost equally talented fighters.

After all, overestimating your own skill was one of the fastest ways to find yourself eating pavement. And Mikajia couldn’t think of a better way for a fighter to do that in this kind of scenario then to actually try and hide their true skill till the very last fights. At the same time, if there was a fighter among them that had managed to do just that, he could honestly say he was a bit terrified of exactly how skilled they were, if it wasn’t just arrogance.

Mikajia
As he watched the next fight, Mikajia marveled once more at exactly how different the fights were now. When he had first started taking these jobs, it was pathetic to say the least. He had never actually had to try to defeat his opponents, because they were just that weak. But somewhere along the way, that changed. Little by little, he noticed that the skill levels of his opponents were increasing incrementally. Nothing too substantial, at least until now. He was both excited, and more than a little scared at the same time. Or maybe it was better to say apprehensive.

He wasn’t actually scared of any of these fighters, and he knew better than to think himself some kind of master or ‘Legendary Warrior’ as some foolishly tried to proclaim him to be. Mikajia was all too aware of how weak he still was considered to some fighters. It was one thing to know and accept this fact, but another entirely to have that truth shoved in his face. He had now faced three fighters that he had only barely managed to overcome in this tournament. It was becoming alarmingly obvious that he needed to step up his game.

If he didn’t fight with everything he had, he wasn’t entirely sure that he would be able to actually complete this mission. And if he had been struggling against opponents considered inferior to the woman that stood at the top of this tournament as it’s champion, then the truth of the matter was, Mikajia could very well end up losing that fight. He hated to think of that outcome. But it didn’t matter to him, regardless of how skilled that woman was, he was going to use every last ounce of his power to defeat her and finish this task.

Mikajia
But there was one thing he kept forgetting, and that was his recent rank up. According to the registrar that he had spoken to when he had first signed up for this job, he was now strong enough, and experienced enough to be classified as an S-Rank mage. An achievement that many strove for, but very few ever actually accomplished for one reason or another. Mikajia just stood there for a moment, trying to absorb and register what she had just told him. Eventually he snapped out of it and just gave the woman a smile, thanking her for the information.

He knew that he had been getting close to that level, but it didn’t really sink in apparently, exactly how close he had been. Taking that into consideration, he checked over himself once more. He could definitely tell that his mana reserve seemed to have increased rather significantly, and he could also feel a noticeable difference in his durability and resilience. They weren’t massive increases, but it was significant enough that it would certainly help him with the upcoming fights. He took a deep breath, calming himself and refocusing on the fights ahead of him. It wouldn’t be too much longer now.

As the current fight came to a close, there was another gasp from the audience as yet another fighter lost their life. This time, to a man that appeared to barely be younger than Mikajia. His face was expressionless as he ripped his opponent’s heart from their chest and dropped it on the ring. He walked out of the ring without even waiting for his opponent to completely hit the ground. Mikajia arched a brow as he watched the man leave the ring. That man would be his opponent when he next stepped in to the ring.

Mikajia
Mikajia simply sighed as he watched the man leave. Yet again he was going to be fighting an opponent that had no reservations against killing their opponent to win. Technically, neither did Mikajia, he just didn’t care to deal with the hassle of having a target placed on his head. He’d have to deal with bounty hunters, or overenthusiastic Rune Knights once that were to happen. He rubbed his temple and sighed again. What’s more, he hadn’t been able to completely see what type of magic the man had been using. There had been a surge of magic power right before he ripped the heart out, but the actual execution of whatever spell he’d been using, was too subtle for Mikajia to completely pick up on.

That scared him a bit. It also meant that his opponent was very likely also an S-Rank mage, considering the level of skill it would take to make his spell so subtle. Once more, he would have to fight as if his life was on the line, because it definitely would be. The man walking out of the ring was a seasoned killer, and if Mikajia gave him even the smallest opening, the man would take it, and he’d find himself in the same position as the corpse being dragged out of the ring now.

He steeled himself as he watched the man make his way towards the potion stand, then brought his eyes back towards the ring once more as two more fighters stepped up. There was no point in watching the man now, he just needed to focus on the next two fighters, as one of them could potentially be his final opponent before facing off against the reigning champion. It was between a man and a woman, and the woman was unbelievable.

Mikajia
Her movements were unbelievably graceful, and her strikes were almost too fast for his eyes to follow. The magic she used was simple, elegant and deadly. She wielded a form of ice magic, one that seemed to freeze everything around her, even the air, with every cast. She turned the whole ring into her own personal climate-controlled zone, making her even more of a threat than before. He couldn’t keep his eyes off of her, absolutely entranced by how effortless she made everything look, even though he knew it obviously wasn’t. This woman was a true force to be reckoned with.

She danced around her target, attacking and defending with a fluidity that bespoke decades of experience in real battles. This woman was by far the deadliest fighter he had come across by far in this tournament. He knew without a doubt that she would be one of the final contestants in this tournament. The question though was, whether Mikajia would be facing her, or would it be his opponent he would soon face off against. He took another deep breath, and slowly exhaled. He was starting to think he should charge hazard pay for any additional dealings with this tournament.

He’s said it several times before, Mikajia was someone that enjoyed a challenge and fighting against a worthy opponent, but this was becoming serious. One of two things would have to happen. Either he was going to have to say fuck it and start killing his opponent just so that he could survive, or he was going to start demanding double payment for taking on these kinds of requests. He started to seriously debate whether he should just go ahead and say fuck it right now, and decide whether he should just kill his opponent in his upcoming fight.

Mikajia
It really just came down to how much he preferred being able to move around freely, versus always having to look over his shoulder. And he could definitely say, he preferred not having to become paranoid about every little suspicious sound or movement. As it was now, he could confidently say he still did not intend on killing his opponent, but that could very well change in an instant once he stepped in to the ring soon. It looked like the current fight was about to come to a close; the woman severely injuring every one of the man’s limbs before holding a blade of ice to his throat. However, she didn’t kill him, instead forcing him to admit defeat.

That at least made him feel a little better, knowing that at least one of the remaining people in the finals wasn’t actively attempting to kill their opponent, but he would have to make sure he won this next fight if he wanted to have an honorable battle with this woman. The fight between her and her opponent finished in less than a minute, something to brag about honestly, as most fights usually lasted closer to two minutes.

The fights Mikajia had been in so far had taken him just over a minute to finish, and considering her opponent now was much more talented than almost every past opponent Mikajia had to face, that spoke volumes of just how talented this woman was. But something about her felt a little off to him, like he recognized her somehow, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. For now, he decided to just ignore that feeling, as his next fight was coming up. As she and her opponent exited the ring, and she thawed all the ice, Mikajia started preparing.

Mikajia
When his fight started, he had already transformed into his Daemon form, his solid black eyes staring out from a small gap in his makeshift mask, never leaving the face of his opponent. Unlike his last fight, this man didn’t have a transformation, at least not a physical one. But he could feel something shift in his opponent, it felt like the magic power radiating off of the man doubled, then tripled. It felt like he was standing in front of a massive hurricane of power. But he didn’t let it stop him from moving forward, and facing him head on.

Just like with his last opponent, Mikajia knew he couldn’t let this fight be drawn out, or risk engaging in close range combat for too long, otherwise he would end up on the losing side of this fight. Instead, he would need to land the first blow. In almost every fight, the person that could manage to land the first hit would almost always win. There were exceptions of course, but that wasn’t going to stop him from trying. He let his own magic power surge, readying and firing off two spells at his opponent as he soared into the air.

The next minute of the fight passed by in a blur for everyone in attendance that watched their exchange. For the two of them though, this minute felt like an hour. Eventually though, after shooting off almost every spell he knew, from his weakest all the way to his strongest spell, Mikajia eventually came out the winner. He did however manage to get a few rather serious injuries from his opponent, but it wasn’t anything he knew a healing potion wouldn’t be able to fix. Mikajia knew the man wasn’t going to be the type to surrender, so he had to actually knock the man out, like the werewolf.

Mikajia
The man managed to nearly break one of Mikajia’s arms when he got a little too close, as well as put a decent gash in his side that could easily have been lethal for a weaker mage. The man had also very nearly put him in a hold that would have certainly meant his death, the guy aiming for a full choke hold. Mikajia had no doubt the man would have instantly tried to snap his neck. But thankfully he was able to avoid the worst of the attacks his opponent had tried to dish out at him.

Mikajia was limping pretty hard as he left the ring, shifting back to his humanoid form and making his way to the potion stand. He handed over the jewels for a health and a mana potion and downed them instantly, sighing with relief as he felt the magical liquids go to work. With his wounds and vitality restored as well as his mana pool, Mikajia turned to look at the ring once more. It was about time. Soon, Mikajia would be facing off against the amazing ice user he’d watched in the previous fight. He felt a grin spreading across his lips. This would be a fight he could seriously enjoy.

He knew that the odds were stacked against him for this fight, but honestly, at least knowing his opponent wasn’t going to actively seek to actually kill him, helped to ease his tension. Mikajia could simply focus on pitting his skill against another incredible fighter. As the staff members got to work repairing the ring after Mikajia’s last fight, he searched through the stands for the woman, eventually finding her. She was also staring directly at him, but he felt no malice or foreboding sense from her, but once more, he got this feeling that she was familiar to him somehow. And once more, he pushed it aside focusing instead on what would undoubtedly be one of the hardest fights he would ever experience.
