He was working for a crime family again. However, this time, it wasn’t for the Martellos. It seemed that some of the other families had heard about how much he had been helping the Martello family, but instead of trying to kill him or anything like that, this family decided to play the game, and were hiring him to assist them. It was none other than the Tessio family. The very family that the Martellos had hired Mikajia many times to help them thwart a number of times. He could only imagine how Remy would react when he found out that Mikajia had helped their rivals.


It really shouldn’t be a surprise though. He had never once said that he would only ever work exclusively for the Martellos. And if they wanted to ensure that his services were reserved only for them, they would need to pay a ridiculous sum. Why would he possibly pass up on perfectly good jewels? Simply because they were from the family he’d been working against, with another crime family? No way. Not a chance. Yes, he had enjoyed working for the Martellos so far, and he would happily do so again, so long as they continued to pay him well, but that never meant he would only ever work for them.


During his jobs for the Martellos, he had developed a particular disdain for Vincenze Tessio. From what he could see, the man needed some serious work with his security and safety measures. It had been far too easy for him to break into one of his cash houses, and to tag many of the man’s safe houses. However, despite how little he thought of the man’s actual capabilities as a mob boss, so long as they paid well, he would happily look past that.

The request that had been made of him by the Tessio family, was from Vincenze’s right hand man, Frankie Marino, and the task was simple. Once he had met up with the man, Frankie explained to Mikajia that they had spotted a couple of outsiders wandering around the city earlier. And from what their informants had relayed, the duo was wasting no time in using Vincenze’s name to bully and push around some people. The problem was, these two had absolutely no connection to the Tessio family at all. So his task was to follow the two of them and gather as much information about them as he could. Then, once he had enough info, to make sure he used it against the duo and ensure they realize they were never welcome to set foot in Oak City ever again.


From what they had been told, the duo was apparently specifically targeting shop owners, using Vincenze’s name to bully them into giving them insane discounts, and threatening violence if they didn’t cooperate. It didn’t take him long to locate the duo after being sent out by Frankie. That was one of the other issues with using a crime family’s name when you weren’t associated with them. More than anything though, Mikajia was mostly surprised at the fact that he wasn’t being hired to kill the morons.


It really didn’t make sense to him. Considering they were a crime family, and some random people were trying to use their name for their own means, letting the duo get away with this with nothing more than a little violence and some threats? It didn’t match up with the reputation of a crime family. But it is what it is, this was the task he was hired for, so that’s what he would do.

What’s more, as he followed the duo, they almost specifically dealt with the smaller businesses and stalls. Which showed they were also cowards, choosing only to pick on the ones that probably had no way of knowing that they were lying. Before he had set out, he had also been asked by Frankie to assure the owners of the shops the duo targeted, that they were lying to them, that the pair had no connections to the Marino’s and that they were safe from any supposed repercussions the pair had threatened them with if they didn’t cooperate with what they said.


The duo also didn’t strike him as particularly bright while he followed them. Nothing about them really seemed to stand out, and while they were threatening the shopkeepers, something about their behavior struck him as people that really didn’t care to be doing what they were. It was weird, but he wasn’t there to determine why the pair were throwing around Vincenze’s name, just to insure they never did it again. He followed close enough to hear what they were saying, but only barely; using random passing groups to blend in with, and stopping at nearby shops, pretending to browse their selections while keeping an eye on them.


The more he listened, the more he was sure the duo were a few pieces shy of a full load. They brazenly used Vincenze’s name out in the open, and didn’t care who heard. Mikajia was beginning to think that he could simply walk behind the duo and they probably still wouldn’t notice him. But, he sill figured better to be safe than sorry. The first shop Mikajia followed the pair to was a simple jewelry shop, they gave their spiel, threatened the owner with unimaginable horrors if they didn’t cooperate, then were on their way.

What struck him as truly odd was the fact that they didn’t even buy anything. At none of the shops the two visited did they buy a single thing. They showed up, they demanded insane deals, threatened the owners with violence if they disobeyed, then left. It was always the same. And while Mikajia followed and at each of the three shops they visited in the time, while assuring the owners that the pair were not associated with the Tessios, he also discovered that the two had never before set foot in any of these shops. They just showed up and started demanding things out of nowhere.


Typically, if someone was bold enough to do this once, then they almost always had a history of such behavior. But not this pair, no one had ever seen them before and even the crime families, which kept a pretty extensive list of people in their cities had never seen these two. If anything, he figured their obscurity and unknown histories were why the family had just asked Mikajia to scare the duo, rather than kill them. If the pair were a part of some other crime family, and this was a ploy to start a war of sorts, then they definitely didn’t want to act hastily.


Once it appeared the two had done what they intended and were beginning to leave, that’s when Mikajia decided to act. He followed them until the pair turned down an alley. Once Mikajia was sure they were fairly secluded, that’s when he pounced. Within a matter of seconds, he had the two completely bound up and bloodied, sitting panting and groaning in the middle of the alley. He also made sure to gag the two of them so they couldn’t yell for help. A rather fitting punishment for those that liked to pick on people much weaker than themselves.

Sure that he had the duo’s attention, he then began illustrating the harsh reality of the situation they were in, and exactly what they were going to do. He held his dagger up to the neck of one of the pair, insuring they understood everything perfectly. He wasted no time in telling them why he was there, the role he was playing and exactly who it was that had sent him. Mikajia repeated many of the things he’d heard the duo telling the shopkeepers during their visits.


Mikajia had honestly expected some kind of defense from these two, some kind of unexpected magical resistance, protection or something. But no, nothing of the sort happened during his capture of the two. It really made no sense to him. He felt he could rationalize their actions if they were working for someone with much more power and influence in the criminal world, but Mikajia figured the two would have some kind of protection. Then again, not if they were meant to be caught or even killed.


That thought didn’t bode too well. It had of course occurred to him already that these two might be the match to start a war between the crime families, but who would want that, who would really have anything to gain? Most of the criminal families stood to lose more than they could possibly gain if a war started. But again, he brushed this thought aside as it didn’t really concern him. If a war did break out between the families, his services would go to the highest bidder, no questions. That’s how he worked.


Sure that he had sufficiently terrified the duo into almost pissing themselves, he then warned them to tell no one of their interaction, and to never return to the city again. They nodded before bolting from the alley. With that, Mikajia returned to Frankie to inform him of the good news. A pleased Frankie then clasped his hand in a firm handshake before handing him his payment and gratitude for a job well done. Mikajia nodded then turned and left.
