This theater was turning into a curse. Specifically, the kind of curse that you can't get rid of no matter how hard you tried. With each big, bombastic production the Producer came out with, the Theater was reinvigorated with a slough of new patrons, new aspiring actors, and new sponsors. It had ceased to be that run down hole in the wall it had been when Ko had first arrived. Sure, it was still a hole in the wall, and it didn't have the glitz and glamour of its hayday, but the Marigold Theater was starting to get its name back.

Unfortunately for Ko, who had played a role in that re-invigoration so often, it made him a known face in and around the crowds that frequented said Theater. That sort of attention was not what Ko was expecting when he arrived in Marigold to work as a mercenary. He certainly didn't expect people to stop believing him when he told them his true profession. After the last big production, many of them just assumed that he was an Actor by trade; new, and rough cut, but still an actor.

The worst part was, Ko couldn't deny that he enjoyed the attention on some level. So when the Proprietor once again announced a large production would be going forward, Ko kept an ear to the ground. It didn't take long for word of a job he could do appeared, but in this case it was something unexpected. For this production, the Proprietor wanted to bring out something the audience hadn't seen before. While the previous productions had included things like swordplay or fighting in a choreographical sense, they were more dance number than actual sword fight.

The Proprietor wanted this production to bring the violent portions of the play to life, to really make the audience fear for the lives of the actors without putting them in real harms way. Ko, after his previous contributions, seemed to be the perfect choice. He had no reason to disagree.

The play the Proprietor had chosen was another love story, unsurprisingly. Ko couldn't exactly complain about the choice; love stories were popular, and their biggest billing member in the cast was an actress so it fit. Unlike most of the love stories the Proprietor decided to put up on stage, however, this one was about love blossoming in the battlefield. As soon as he heard that, Ko was immediately intrigued by what the story would entail.

There was apparently a lot of history involved in the play itself, based around dramatizations of true events and the like. Fortunately, Ko wouldn't be required to take on an integral acting role this time around, although he would be showing up on stage. Ko's job was to instruct the leading actors and actresses on swordplay; more specifically, on how to make the choreography look as realistic as possible. It was for that exact reason Ko would be on stage as well. His character was a major foil for the main character, and had the most combat scenes. Having Ko play that role would make it possible to push limits and make it as realistic as possible.

Specifically, Ko was cast as 'The Black Knight', a mysterious individual who served the villainous king of the story and opposed the young lady Lyn, a noble woman from another country currently being invaded by the villainous king. The love story actually involved the lady Lyn's encounters with the son of a duke from the opposing kingdom, meaning their first meeting was while crossing swords. Needless to say, Ko absolutely loved that just on principle. Supposedly, the Black Knight was secretly the older brother of said duke's son, but that wouldn't be discovered until the end of the play.

Needless to say, Ko was incredibly motivated to ensure they got everything just right. He drilled the main actors mercilessly to ensure they wouldn't take any unnecessary risks while also maintaining the integrity of the scene. Ko was half certain that they might have actually served as recruits for the city guard by the time he was done. That much, at least, was warranted.

The day of the productions reveal, many of the actors were more nervous than usual. This was different from any other sort of production they'd put on before, and at least a few degrees more dangerous. Ko didn't bother trying to assuage their concerns; they were professionals after all. Either they'd come through, or they'd screw it up and the rest of the cast would roll with the punches.

Surprisingly, most all of them managed their parts without screwing things up. Despite multiple scenes depicting mass battles, which required several actors on stage at a time, there were no major issues in terms of stage accidents. Ko introduction as the Black Knight, wherein he fought a dozen men single-handedly, was met by real gasps of fear from the crowd. He really hammed up his viciousness, evoking as much merciless bloodlust as he could from his movements, since his face was masked by a black helm.

Ko was especially impressed by the fight/love scene between the duke's son and Lyn. The actors portrayed their parts beautifully, without detracting from the choreography meant to show off their personal skill. If Ko had seen two people meet like this on a real battlefield, he'd have believed they were in love too. Or at least, really hot for each other. Things progressed smoothly, and the tension in the theater could be cut with a knife when the time came for the final confrontation with the villainous king. And standing in the way of Lyn and the Duke's Son was the Black Knight.

Ko had to hand it to the Proprietor, his idea to have the fight spill off the stage and into the crowd was genius. It was just him and the actor playing the Duke's Son, but the clear advantage they had shown the Black Knight possessed made it easy to turn the fight into a game of cat and mouse. Ko saw more than one face in the crowd with real fear on it. Eventually they returned to the stage, and the Duke's Son and Lyn faced the Black Knight down together, finally dueling him to death. His identity was finally revealed, and Ko could swear he heard someone 'Kya' in the crowd once his face was visible. Damn it. At least the money was worth it.
