Erebus was under Grimoire Heart, a nobody with no understanding of magic. He pressed against the friction of doubt and became a werewolf before breaking away from global terrorism to join Phantom Lord under a different alias. During this time, he was tempted by demons, and lost his soul for it.

S1: Crawl from Hell
Erebus spends two long years in the Underworld, but eventually finds his way out, sanity out of the question. The Mortal Coil, now freed from the Underworld makes communion with a recent corpse. The fusion of body, mind, and soul festers into the walking deadman. With help from various witches, Erebus succeeds in changing his appearance. Attaining both his youth and the scent of life, if only temporary. Eventually, the Spellhowler gets back to the world of crime, with a plan to press vampire blood into street drugs, fueling cannabilistic attacks on small urban communities that resembled middle-age fables of Vampires in Dahlia. However, unlike those stories, the victims gained no otherworldly power and in fact came back to their senses afterwards to wallow in shame. Most targeted groups commited suicide in masse. Which ensued chaos across the lands of Fiore.
The Social Experiment made him beg the question of whether becoming a Vampire would stunt his vessel from decomposing. Upon being bitten by a Vampire, purposefully, Erebus realizes it cues his latent abilities to unravel. He dubs himself a Zombie, then and there.

S2 Time-Skip: Time of Recreation
During the years to follow before Season 3, Erebus retires his insanity, for more of a backseat position to watch the next generation. He's timid, and twisted, but longs for meaning beyond ignorant war. He seeks redemption, if that would matter. Having a streak of murders behind him that totals thousands.
