The night was peaceful, but there was something amiss. Kerii woke up with a strange feeling. She couldn't quite pin down what it was, but she could not help but feel that something was off. Knowing her life, this could mean anything. Carnil could be on the prowl once more, Riniya could be close by, or the spirit could be up to its antics again. Either outcome would be less than pleasant, to say the least, but Kerii supposed that she would make do with what went her way. Regardless of whatever was off though, it would not hinder the elf from completing the task she had in mind that day. Well, she didn't actually quite know which type of task she would do, but it wouldn't be anything light, that was for sure. It was high time she did something worthwhile.

Kerii's mind was set on doing a request. The night before she had told herself that the next day she would complete a request to earn some more money. She was not running low by a long shot, but it didn't hurt to have more. And of course, she wanted to help the citizens of Orchidia, though she didn't want to do so via doing a menial task such as watching over an old lady or delivering food. No, the healer wanted to do something more meaningful. She wanted to actually stop a dark wizard or foil a criminal's plans. Now that she was more experienced, she felt as if she could do this sort of thing far easier than in the past.

The past couple years had been rough, to say the least. Her skills had deteriorated more than expected, and she only recently had regained her strength and then some. She was a far more capable wizard than she was previously, and it was not just in regards to magic. Yes, her healing spells had significantly improved, but Kerii would not even consider doing a request of a high caliber alone with just those spells under her belt. Over time, she improved her physical strength as well. The Wood Elf could endure more hits and strike with more force than ever before. She'd like to think that her father would be proud, as she did reflect the qualities of elven warriors in that sense, but she knew he would find a way to fault her.

In all honesty, she was dreading the prospect of traveling to Crocus. Being a mage, it was inevitable that she would willingly return home at one point or another. Amnesia didn't need to be the catalyst for that, but she still wished that it would not be so. If she ran into her father, she knew that a confrontation would come. Kerii may not have wanted to talk in person with her father, but he certainly would. Despite everything that happened, her father would not stop trying to convert his precious daughter back to traditional elven ways. The Lamia thought she made it perfectly clear that such an action would never happen, but he still did not seem to want to hear it. His stubborn attitude was the reason their relationship was in tatters, and frankly Kerii was not even sure she wanted to repair it at this time. She was still furious with him, and she would remain to be until he changed his ways.

It was an unhealthy frame of mind, and it would only lead to a disturbed relationship between herself and her dad, but Kerii was equally as stubborn as her father. There was no doubt in anyone's mind where she got it from, and it unfortunately made for difficult situations. When two headstrong people collided with opposing views, there was little anyone could do for the situation. Reason was thrown out the window and all that was left was bitter attitudes towards one another. Somewhere deep down, Kerii did want to reconcile. She loved her father after all, but those feelings were buried far away, and the negative situation with her father was not exactly the most threatening at the moment. There were far more significant matters to deal with, and once those were over with, maybe then she could focus her time and energy on that relationship.

Of course, that desired waiting time could come to an abrupt halt should she visit Crocus. It was on her to-do list. As a Lamia Scale mage, she felt as if it were her duty to go to other places and complete requests there. Given that Crocus was none other than the capital of Fiore, she felt obligated to go there at some point. She would leave a bad impression if she didn't soon. Truthfully, she was ready to depart from Orchidia. She had no business to take care of, nor was she waiting on anyone. She was free to explore to her heart's content. Crocus would be the most logical place to go, but her emotions were getting in her way.

Right now, her only excuse for staying in Orchidia was that she had work to do. Key word: had. As in, must. She was lying to herself by saying she must stay in her town to complete more quests. Kerii knew that. It was a thing she often did. She hated that about herself, and yet she kept doing it over and over again. The Wood Elf would make excuse after excuse, and at times she even tricked her brain into thinking that they were valid, but if she took the time to sit down and think logically about the whole situation, the truth would dawn on her.

To avoid this, she would distract herself. At the moment, she was brewing a cup of coffee-- notably, not tea. She needed something to jumble up her thoughts, not make them calm and clear. Her excuse? She needed extra energy if she was going to tackle a difficult mission. She needed to be alert and buzzing, not slow and drifting. The little voice in the back of her mind telling her otherwise was drowned out by the spurting sound of coffee and steam, and the soft humming of the elf's voice.

While she waited, she began to unnecessarily refold some clothes that she thought were not quite folded well enough, almost as if they would wrinkle, but the truth was they were fine. If you asked her, she would swear to the Linea that nothing was the matter. It was just a 'typical morning.'

Just like any other 'typical morning', she downed her cup of coffee rather quickly. In reality, she probably would have taken the time to drink smaller sips while reading a bit of one of the many novels adorning her bookshelf; however, she kept telling herself that there was a job she needed to do. There was no time to waste. If she dilly-dallied any longer, she would miss the opportunity to get a good request.

The elf filled her empty mug with soapy water and let the sugary coating from the creamer soak in the mixture while she went out and did her business. Dishes could wait-- requests could not.

Kerii rushed out of her house and bustled down the streets. It was difficult to simultaneously hustle and not blatantly show haste, but she somehow managed to look somewhat normal. When she got into the guild hall, she let out a sigh of relief as she saw that the request board was full of flyers for eager mages to take. Luckily, it was not very crowded either. As a matter of fact, there was hardly anyone in the guild hall. That being said, it was early morning. In fact, it was only just this moment when the elf realized just how unreasonably early she was. In all reality, she could have easily sat back and enjoyed the warmth of her caffeinated beverage and the parchment scent of an old book, and yet she rushed herself. No matter. There was little she could do about it now. She was already at the guild hall. It would be a waste to go home only to come back thirty minutes or an hour later.

The elf walked over to the request board and twirled a strand of long blonde hair while she looked at all the jobs. There were plenty of small things to do, as usual, but there were also a few quests that looked a bit harder. One such was put out by a man Kerii was familiar with: inspector Nilan. He surprisingly did not have a job for her regarding the cult she uncovered a few months back. No, this was something entirely different. Or at least, it seemed to not be related.

There was evidently a murderer running loose in Orchidia. He tends to strike at night. With an M.O. of slicing people's throats, he has claimed a few too many lives under the cover of darkness, hence why he needed to be dealt with swiftly. Kerii only assumed that this meant that the criminal was either too complicated for the police and Rune Knights, or they were simply too overloaded with work at the moment. Regardless, inspector Nilan clearly thought it was necessary for a mage to take care of the job, and so that was what the elf was going to do.

Taking the piece of paper down from the board, Kerii took a look at the reward again. Inspector Nilan was offering a rather large sum of jewels for successfully finding out who this culprit is. As she walked out of the guild hall, a concerned expression came across her face. The reward seemed strangely high. Either Nilan was very desperate to capture this man, or he was more dangerous than the quest was letting on.

As the elf drew closer to inspector Nilan’s office, she couldn’t help but wonder what this quest would entail. After all, it wasn’t everyday you stumbled across a job like this. Kerii had worked for Nilan a few other times, and even for a request which she considered to be pretty important, the reward was never as high as it was this time. She had been fortunate to come across this type of quest... but then again it may prove to be unfortunate. She was fully intending on soloing this. As a healing mage with no weapon or offensive spell, this could actually be considered an idiotic choice.

It was unlike Kerii to do something seemingly so dumb, but she personally thought things would turn out alright. She could still fight with hand-to-hand combat. Granted, she was likely worse than this criminal, but she also had her intelligence. When all else failed, the elf was certain that she could come up with at least something on the spot to give herself the upper hand. In all likelihood, it would be a plan to somehow trick the murderer. Just how, she wasn’t quite sure yet. She would first have to see if standard combat went in her favor. If that failed, she would have to take into consideration his actions and potential frame of mind. Being a criminal of that caliber, Kerii wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t have rational thought; however, there was one thing that could demonstrate an intact mind, and that was the victims.

If the victims were connected, then that would show rational thought... as rational as a murderer could be at least. So far, the quest was implying that there were no connections though. Without context, Kerii was left to assume that it was a string of heartless murders. In all reality, that could end up being the possibility, which in that case the quest was far more dangerous than she realized. One slip up and she could be dead. It was a bone chilling thought, but a probable one at that.

The Lamia considered taking someone along with her. The guild hall wasn’t too far away, but then she shook her head. This was something Kerii had to do alone. She felt the need to show how far she’d come since her mother’s death, since Ëala possessed her, since her memory was erased. She was less proving it to the guild, but more to herself. The elf was positive she was a far stronger mage than she used to be, but she still felt as if it was a baseless claim unless she proved her worth. Of course, ‘proving her worth’ was subjective. One may argue that she did so during the demonic incursion in Orchidia, but that was in the spur of the moment. Plus, Ëala distracted her, making her realize what was happening far too late. By the time she reached the streets, there had already been a bloodbath. If she was just better, then maybe she could have killed more demons and prevented some deaths.

The demonic incursion left an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach. Her mind kept telling her that it would happen again, because knowing her luck it most certainly would, but then another part of her was telling her otherwise. That threat was done and over with. She didn’t need to worry about something that probably won’t happen anytime soon. The only thing she should be concerned about was the task at hand— the real, tangible threat of a murderer.

As Kerii came up to Inspector Nilan’s office, she took a deep breath to calm her mind before stepping through the door. The familiar chime of a bell greeted her, and Nilan alertly looked up from his seat at the desk. Upon seeing the elf, a wave of relief washed over his face. He got up and greeted the mage, and began to explain the situation in more depth.

The culprit was currently unknown. Just as the paper said, he or she only attacked at night. Kerii asked about the victims, but there was no known connection as of yet; however, there were some crime scenes that she could visit. Only, she would not be going alone like she originally thought. Three Rune Knights would be accompanying her. Inspector Nilan hoped that they would be able to pick up on some things that he and the officers missed. Considering a professional detective might not have caught everything, Kerii didn’t think she would have much more luck, but it was worth a shot.

Kerii waited only a few minutes before the three Rune Knights Nilan spoke of showed up. Decked out in uniform and donning protective gloves, they looked more prepared for the crime scene than the Lamia was. In her defense, the request said nothing about investigating actual crime scenes, but she was still a little embarrassed she didn’t come prepared. It was alright though in this instance, for Inspector Nilan tossed her a pair of plasticky gloves from a draw in his desk. It shouldn’t have been a problem since the police were finished their investigation, but should they want to continue, it was best they didn’t contaminate the area.

Kerii stuffed the gloves in her pocket and left with the three Rune Knights. She checked to see how much information they knew, but it seemed like they knew the same amount as her. Great. All four of them had to learn essentially the same information if they wanted to solve the murder.

Kerii was hoping that they could put their minds together and hopefully collect clues, but they knew nothing. There weren’t any DNA samples being analyzed, nothing could connect the victims, and there was no sign of a weapon. The later the elf found curious. Forensics should be able to tell which sort of weapon was used. After all, their necks were sliced, and the skin would part in such a way depending on the blade. Although, this was Orchidia. There were traveling merchants and mercenaries. You could buy a weapon and by the time the police come to check, the seller would be gone.

When they arrived at one of the scenes, the body was gone— gone for forensics no doubt. There still were pools of half-dried blood, and strangely no signs of a struggle. Whoever this murderer was, he either was very lucky with this first victim, or he was experienced. The Rune Knights were disappointed to discover that there were no clues, but this was a clue enough for Kerii. To make sure that this pattern was consistent though, they would have to examine the other crime scenes.

Just as she suspected, the next couple crime scenes displayed the same thing. There were only pools of blood from where the deceased drop to the floor. There was no blood trail and no sign of a struggle. This was clearly not dumb luck. The murderer was trained for this. Knowing Fiore, this could mean just about anyone belonging to a dark guild. That being said, there were also of plenty guildless people who had a dark side, and then even “light mages” who defected from their guild in pursuit of selfish and disgraceful desires. And then Orchidia in particular was riddled with people of all sorts. It would be extremely difficult to pin down who it was.

Kerii didn’t want to admit it, but this quest could actually be almost impossible to finish. Almost. There were a few things she could do, but she would have to think them over. Luckily, the Rune Knights let her go and have some free time. They might have been done for the day, but Kerii wasn’t.

The Lamia spent the rest of the day in her home formulating a plan. Dozens of scenarios ran through her mind. She kept trying to figure out how to discover who the murderer was, but then came the matter of actually arresting whoever it was. In order to properly gauge the fight, she’d need to first find the culprit. He was good with his work. That much she knew. He was deft, and probably liked working in the shadows. She also had to consider the possibility that he possessed some sort of magic.

It suddenly struck the elf that the murderer could very well be a mage. Just because he or she killed with a knife didn’t mean he or she couldn’t use magic. It would certainly be a plausible reason for how they could be so stealthy. Either way, Kerii didn’t like the outcome. She would either be dealing with a trained assassin, or someone who was good with a knife who could potentially go invisible. As such, she had to prepare for both scenarios; however, it was more important that she found out who the culprit actually was.

She could wait for them to mess up, she could try to set up a trap, or she could have a stake out. She knew that the killer probably wasn’t likely to slip up, so that first option was out of the question. A stake out may not be the best idea either since she didn’t have a magic or item to help with that, which pretty much just left a trap.

But what kind of trap should she make? She could honestly make herself bait, but what if the murderer had seen her and the Rune Knights investigate? The killer may not want to reveal him or herself to a mage of Lamia Scale like that and potentially foil his plans. Coming up with something to trick this man was very difficult. Kerii wanted to make the trap cunning enough so that it would trick even her, and that was simply not something she’d be able to come up with in a single night. She didn’t like this, but it looked like she’s have to sleep on the decision, and so she did.

Part of her wanted to stay up late and perhaps even pull an all-niter. She so badly wanted to figure this out, but she knew that she would need both her mind and body rested if she stood any chance at solving this issue. So, begrudgingly, she went to bed. Time passed, and the elf once again woke up early, not because she wanted to seize the day, but because there was a pounding on her door. Curious, she peeped through the hole at the top of the door to find that it was none other than Inspector Nilan. A concerned look came across her face as she opened the door. Part of her was hoping that they caught the criminal, but another knew that something was probably wrong. He immediately explained that there had been yet another murder and wanted her to come to the scene. She quickly changed and headed out the door

Sure enough, when they reached the area where the murder happened, it was the same thing. The body had only recently been taken away, so the crime scene was fresh and crawling with officers. Once again, there was no evidence. Kerii began to get a sick feeling that this time it was just to toy with her and the Rune Knights. The murderer must have seen them poking around at the crime scenes. Why else would something like this happen so suddenly?

Frankly, Kerii was enraged that the murderer would do something like this just to spite a few people, including herself. She stormed off the scene without explanation. She immediately knew what she was going to do. Was it childish? Yes, but the felon seemed to like to play games. Would she be caught? Potentially, by the murderer no doubt, hence why she would need a good disguise. And what exactly would she need a disguise for?

It sounded dumb, but Kerii wanted to leave a note for the murderer. He clearly liked to hang out near his crime scenes and admire the work he did, so she would leave a note for him that would read: I know who you are. Honestly, Kerii didn't know if the murderer was foolish enough to fall for such a dumb trick, but it was worth a shot. If it were her, she would check out whoever sent the note. If worse came to worse, in the criminal's mind it would just mean another dead body and one less person he had to worry about.

By some miraculous stroke of good luck, Kerii's simple, childish plan had worked. She ended up dressing in a dark outfit with something to cover her eyes and pointed ears. Once the crime scene was cleared out, she left a note and fled. She asked the murderer to meet her in a specific alley along Fir Street. No police. No Rune Knights. No other mages. Just her. She was sure that the criminal would scout out the place first, just to be sure that nobody was coming, and nobody was. The elf was going alone.

Kerii waited patiently by the alley and tensed her muscles when she heard the metallic sound of a dagger being unsheathed. She whisked around to find a man holding one in his hand, a mere metre away from her. How he had snuck up on her that well, she didn't know, but she had to deal with him now.

He made the first move. He lunged forward and with a swift movement, tried to slash her with his dagger. She was able to move out of the way and punch him in the rib cage. He winced, but did little more than that. They each dealt their own attacks. They were scarily almost on par with one another; however, Kerii was more resourceful than him. The elf grabbed for a trash can lid, which gave him just enough time to slash her across the arm. She threw it at him, temporarily blinding him. This gave her a window to deal a final blow to his head. Once knocked out, she unmasked him to find out that it was one of the three Rune Knights she was with before. By this time, someone had seen the fight and called the authorities, to who the elf handed the ex-Rune Knight over to. The job was now over, and Nilan rewarded her for her work... But that meant she was out of excuses to stay in Orchidia.
