"Aren't you overlooking something incredibly important?" the Fairy Tail mage mused. It was good, even admirable that this practitioner of a kindred magic (one might even say different branches of the same tree) had such lofty goals and ambitions to the point that they wanted an epic to be written about their deeds, but there was still something that she hadn't considered, or at least this is what the Fire Dragon Slayer believed. It was true, an undeniable fact really, that under conventional circumstances and traditionally speaking, when fire would meet ice, it was only natural that the ice would be melted by the flames. From this assumption that fire would always melt ice, it was probably a matter of course that fire mages would feel somewhat superior to their frosty counterparts, but it was folly to suggest that any ice mage would lose to any fire mage, simply based on the elements of their magics.

The Frost Dragon Slayer talked about making history if she, as an ice mage, defeated Houren, as a fire mage, but he could not help but think this to be the most conceited of exaggerations. Fire did have an elemental advantage over ice, but Tori was greatly mistaken if she believed that maxim was the source of the Fire Dragon Slayer's confidence. "Even if the roles were reversed and I was at the elemental disadvantage, my stance wouldn't change at all," he shrugged, but the expression on his face was as neutral as could be. For Houren, this wasn't bragging or boasting, he was merely stating the truth that he could see right now with his eyes.

"You're making too big a deal about this frost against fire thing, Tori. It sounds to me like you're preparing your excuses for when you inevitably lose to me,'' his gaze narrowed.

Houren explained that their elements had no bearing on the confidence he exuded, even going as far as to suggest that Tori was making excuses in advance to explain her inevitable loss to her brethren. This was far from the case, as Tori had always been one to simply be quite outspoken about the level of confidence in her abilities. Granted, past events such as the altercation with Cell would speak to the contrary, that there was nothing to be confident in at all, but she would prove everyone wrong, starting with Houren's claims of excuses.

"Believe whatever you would like to, for it will make my victory all the sweeter." Tori surprised even herself by how she was speaking; even as outspoken as she was, she had always thought trash talking to be distasteful. But there was something about this situation: a battle between Dragon Slayers to inevitably be crowned Dragon Emperor that instilled in Tori the fires of a thousand burning suns. Truth be told, she had no idea if she could beat Houren, but what she did know is that this fight would be one for the Fairy Tail archives, never to be forgotten. If she won, awesome. That would be the first step towards the coveted prize. If she lost, then that would mean she simply had room to grow stronger.

There was something about Tori's stubbornness, and by extension, her inability to acknowledge the gap between the two of them that rubbed Houren the wrong way. It wasn't the seething kind of anger, or the type that builds up overtime, although he could rule those types out, it wasn't as though he was able to properly diagnose himself. If he had to describe it though, he'd probably say it was something akin to frustration, frustration at being misunderstood, at being unable to be understood. It was clear to him now that the Frost Dragon Slayer was the type of person to not believe in something unless they could see it with their own two eyes, to deny something unless they had experienced it before.

If that was the case, and it almost certainly seemed like it was, then the immediate solution was obvious. It was standing right in front of him, and the Fire Dragon Slayer made no move to mask his true intention; he suspected Tori would have grasped Houren's intent quite quickly as well. "Do you want me to show you the difference between you and I?" the Fairy Tail mage eventually spoke up after a considerable silence. He was directly challenging her to a fight right now, but in case his intent got lost in translation, he decided to make it clearer.

The Fire Dragon Slayer raised a hand to his chin, and thought for a second. "We can call it a spar that has nothing to do with being crowned Dragon Emperor, if you'd like," he suggested, an attempt to entice her to agreeing. "I just want you to know exactly what it is that you're up against," he added on.

Houren was clearly irked by the blonde's bullheaded nature. So much so that he issued a small challenge to the woman. To say that Tori was shocked was a slight understatement, given their present location, but at the same time, she kind of had a feeling it would come to this. Houren spoke of a difference between the two, which Tori could only take to mean a gap in strength, but the ice mage wasn't one to deny a challenge, no matter the unlikelihood of victory.

She backed up 3 meters before assuming a stance with legs slightly apart and arms up, bent at the elbow. Her hands were kept slightly open so that she could form maneuver them however was needed for whichever spell she would use. "Very well, Houren. Let's have at it then. Show me the flames of a dragon." she stated calmly, preparing herself for whatever he planned to throw at her. She knew that none of her spells would survive a collision with his own, so her only hope was to get in close. The only way to do that was to find an opening.

"Why are you creating so much distance between us?'' the Fire Dragon Slayer watched with bated breath as Tori widened the distance between the two of them. Surely, if it reached a point where their two spells collided, his own fire spells would take the victory, or did Tori really intend to defeat his flames with her ice? She claimed that she could do it, but he was under the impression that she wanted to defeat him in a metaphorical battle between fire and ice, not actually pit her ice spells against his fire spells. If she was brazen enough to think that she could win in that fashion, then he'd be more than happy to humor her though.

His stance didn't suggest like he was in the midst of a fight like hers did, but there was nothing if not cautioned plastered over the Fire Dragon Slayer's features as he watched Tori assume her own position. The fact that she hadn't done anything yet seemed to suggest that she wanted him to make the first move, and in this situation, he was more than happy to. He made a gun with his index finger and thumb on his left hand an without prior warning, raised it up and shot out one of his trademark spells at the Frost Dragon Slayer.

Tori waited for her counterpart to attack, since this was his idea to begin with. He questioned why the woman was backing up to create distance between the two, to which Tori remained silent. Sure this was just a friendly spar, but she was going to be just as serious as if it was a real fight, and one doesn't ask such questions in a real fight.

Houren didn't assume any sort of fighting stance, though. Perhaps he felt it wasn't necessary? Or maybe his fighting style was as unpredictable as the flames he controlled, and thus didn't warrant any sort of stance. She wasn't sure considering that, up until now, she had only seen him actually fight, but no encounter they'd had yet was the same as a one on one battle. Sometimes one went about them differently, as did Tori, but perhaps not her brethren. Regardless, this was her chance to find out.

Without wasting any time, Houren held up his hand, shaping his fingers like the barrel of a gun. It wasn't hard to tell what kind of spell this was going to be. Just as she thought, a small fireball shot from the index finger of the man in front of her. As planned, Tori threw up her left arm bent at the elbow with her fingers pointing towards the sky, creating an ice shield that covered it. Upon contact with the projectile, the shield vanished as quickly as it appeared. The spells seemed to cancel each other out, which was to be expected. Normally her Dragon Shield would have been slightly more durable, but it didn't stand a chance against a fireball.

The ice melting so quickly likely caused some steam to emerge, as is expected when extreme cold meets extreme heat. Luckily, not so much steam was present that Tori's vision was impaired, so she could still make out Houren's form through it, but that also meant the reverse was true. Tori readied a counter attack in case the fire mage tried to quickly close the distance. "Don't be afraid to turn up the heat a little bit, brother." she said, goading Houren to throw another spell at her.

This was not how Tori would like a fight to go: baiting her opponent from a distance. But from what she had seen so far of Houren's capabilities, she was sure of two things. One, Houren had excellent battle sense, and that being the case, trying to rush him would be nothing short of suicide. Two, his magic reserves far outclassed hers, so he would be able to fight much longer than herself. This meant trying to stall him out would be, again, suicide. This two truths meant Tori had no choice but to fight defensively.

"You should be careful what you wish for..." the Fire Dragon Slayer crouched down, deciding to answer Tori's provocations by giving her exactly what she wanted. "It might just come true," and without prior warning, the Fire Dragon Slayer dashed in front of him, knowing full well that the three meters that Tori had moved back was not enough to protect her from him.

Houren saw little meaning in pure hand to hand combat, and tended to participate in melees with sword or war hammer in hand; however, in this very moment, he was in possession of no such thing. Still, after realizing that Tori would rather deliberately agitate him after blocking his spell rather than moving onto the offensive, he came to the conclusion that the distance she had created between the two was a strategic setup. Either she was giving the Fire Dragon Slayer a lot of credit in regards to his melee fighting, or she had some sort of trap laid out for him. Either way, as long as he had the element of surprise, he knew that he'd retain the upper hand.

Both his left and right hands began to emit flame, and within the second, he had already dashed to Tori's position, swinging with his left and right fists in succession, aiming to inflict the damage to the Frost Dragon Slayer's face.

Houren would reply to Tori's goad with a quip of his own, before doing exactly what she wanted him to do. He lunged towards the woman, closing the distance in no time at all, with both fists coated in flames. As she kept focused on him, and had planned for him to utilize a close range attack, Tori knew exactly what to do. The second his feet moved, Tori ducked below his would be punch while moving forward herself, her own fist coated in ice. The momentum from both mages would plant her icy fist directly into his stomach with as much strength as she could muster. This would, of course, show Houren how much strength she actually possessed, but it would also paint Tori a picture of how much Houren could take. It was her hopes that this counterattack would stun the fire mage for at least a moment so she could follow up with a second attack, but this would remain to be seen.

Assuming he did, in fact, get the wind knocked out of him for more than a second, she would jump backwards, creating the same amount of distance between the two as when they started. She hoped that was enough, but deep down she knew that one punch wouldn't put him down. Houren of Fairy Tail didn't get where he was today by being a weakling.

The Fire Dragon Slayer received a up close and personal demonstration of the Frost Dragon Slayer's impressive reflexes, but when compared to the opponents he had faced in the past, he had expected at least this much. It was nothing to be proud of, but Houren was actually somewhat experienced in fighting slim yet powerful women, but those creatures of the night that he had a run in with a while ago were anything but human. Their bodies were amazingly lithe, and their dexterity and reflexes were out of this world; compared to them, Tori's reflexes, while noteworthy, were nothing new, and besides, if such a straightforward attack had managed to knock her out, then she wouldn't have been much of a rival to begin with.

The moment his target had disappeared, Houren realized that something was wrong, but fortunately had already prepared an appropriate countermeasure. He clenched his fists tightly, much more tightly than before when he was attempting to land a left hook and a right jab on Tori's face, and released another one of his heat spells; one that only comes into effect when he is being hit, and as luck would have it, this was exactly that situation. The spell's latent release of heat, along with his robes, would dilute the frostbite effect of Tori's spell, and upon making contact with the Fire Dragon Slayer's body, she would almost certainly receive a great shock to her system, or at least her fingers.

Regardless of whether the Frost Dragon Slayer stayed stationary after feeling the brunt of Sauna, or whether she leaped back to recreate distance, Houren was ready to remain on the offensive. The coat of flames on his fists shone as brightly as ever, and he once again dashed forward at his full speed, both arms stretched out in front of him and aiming for Tori.

Although Tori's punch found her target in Houren's abdomen, he responded by releasing an intense heat wave that cancelled out the ice covering the blonde's fist, just as she had done before. It seemed Houren knew how to fight defensively as well. This wasn't a surprise to Tori, but it certainly meant things were going to be difficult. The silver haired man had great battlefield awareness, to be sure.

Jumping backward slightly, to get away from the intense heat, Tori readied herself for Houren's inevitable follow up attack. Sure enough, she wasn't going to be kept waiting long as the man coated his fists in flames and she had seen before before quickly lunging towards her, his fists ready to meet their mark. Tori knew he wasn't going to let her get away from his attacks for long, so she raised her left arm as she backed up, creating another shield like the one that blocked the fireball seconds ago. One of the flaming fists burned through the shield instantly, leaving her bare arm to absorb the shock from the second, inducing a slight burn on her forearm. As his fists made contact with the icy barrier, she inhaled deeply, knowing this was her chance if ever she had one. She opened her mouth and let the mighty roar engulf her opponent at point blank range before channeling a small amount of magic and focusing it on the burn to soothe the area. She had no choice but to wait and see how the Dragon Slayer would take the roar head on, but she had faith that it did something to at least give her a slight advantage.

Houren's fists looked like it had hit its mark, causing at least second degree burns to the hand that it had managed to sear. The slight release of heat revealed to the Fire Dragon Slayer immediately after the scuffle that Tori had used that same spell from before, or at least another type of defensive ice spell to lessen the damage of his attacks; a clever move, as otherwise, he couldn't imagine that she'd still have the wind to unleash an elemental roar attack from her mouth. The sudden drop in temperature around Houren's vicinity made him exceedingly uncomfortable, and by instinct, he released another breath of waves to not only warm himself up, but to relieve the frostbite before it could take a serious toll on his body.

The attack forcibly pushed the Fire Dragon Slayer back three meters, but the innate pain was not something that was unbearable for Houren. Upon impact with the cone shaped attack, the Fire Dragon Slayer outstretched his right arm and pointed a single finger at Tori, simultaneously releasing his own fire spell as he was being pushed back by the Frost Dragon's roar. He already had a good gauge of Tori's abilities, and he wondered if it wasn't time for them to start finishing things up.

As the seconds progressed, the ice magic being focused on the burned part of her arm was taking less and less effect. Glancing down at it momentarily, she noticed that blisters had already begin to form. Apparently Houren's flaming fist did more damage than she had previously thought, but she was able to continue moving forward. While the ice magic wasn't enough to stall the burn's progression to such a stage, it was sufficient enough to keep full function of her arm as a whole. In any case, Tori was glad to know that her roar hit it's mark as she had planned, but she wasn't out of the woods yet. Her breath attack had forced Houren backwards a similar distance than when they started when he outstretched his arm towards her. She could sense the magical buildup was quite a bit stronger than the last time he made such a motion and had to act quickly.

The moment before the spell was loosed. Tori dove to the ground, burrowing into the earth and using Houren's own spell as a smokescreen to hide her descent. She closed the distance while 2 meters underground, sure that Houren could not penetrate such a depth. By the time he regained sight of Tori's initial position, he would only see a hole in the ground about half a meter wide. Without warning, Tori would emerge from the ground immediately behind him, covering her left arm in ice, to protect it from further burns, and shaping it in the form of a blade. In the instant which it was formed, simultaneous to her breaking through the ground's surface, she slashed with all her might, cutting deep into Houren's achilles tendon.

If successsful, the attack was sure to slow the Fire Dragon Slayer down, if not cripple him altogether. Regardless, Tori would then create a distance of 3 meters once again to avoid the heatwave which Houren so favored. Surely, this was an opponent that would take Tori to her limits and beyond.

The lack of a sudden yelp of pain suggested to Houren that he hadn't managed to hit Tori with his attack, and the reason became clear when he looked towards Tori's initial position. The small dimensions of his draconic flames did not aid in concealing the Frost Dragon Slayer's intent, and the speed and distance at which he was knocked back by the attack allowed him to see everything clearly; she was going underground. If it had been anyone else than perhaps the Fire Dragon Slayer would have assumed his opponent was attempting to escape, but this could not have been the case. Even if they were the most cowardly of individuals, a Dragon Slayer had a Dragon Slayer's pride, and nobody, no matter how lily-livered, could possibly run away knowing what was at stake here.

The question for Houren was exactly where she was going to be coming from. He had no idea about how fast she could travel underground, but it didn't seem like a move fitting of a Frost Dragon Slayer. Thinking on his feet, the Fire Dragon Slayer begin to inhale and immediately unleashed his own roar but from below, the impact propelling Houren off the ground in that instant. If Tori chose to emerge at a safe distance and use a projectile spell, the subsequent explosion from his attack would certainly melt it before it could do any significant damage to Houren, and if she chose to come directly under him, then the Tenrou Island expedition team would be eating a Frost Dragon for breakfast tomorrow. In any case, if she was anywhere within two meters of the Fire Dragon, then she'd learn that it was only natural that if you get too close to the sun, you'd be burnt.

Her plan was perfect. Catching Houren off guard was going to be the game changer in this fight. But Tori made one grave miscalculation...Houren's uncanny good judgement. If he didn't predict Tori's plan once he surmised that she dodged his flames, he had the knowledge of knowing Tori would never have run from this fight. Considering that she wasn't obviously flying through the air, that left only one place she could be; underground. The only reason for her to do that, was to gain a surprise attack on the fire mage. Unfortunately, the blonde had never considered that her rival would have fired an attack downwards.

The moment the ground broke, Tori was met with a face of flames. The sword on her arm melted instantly, as well as a good portion of her pride in one shot. Everything in her vision was replaced by fire as the heat and burned overwhelmed her body and her mind. After the flames dissipated, Tori lay limp inside a ring of scorched earth, her form covered in severe burns. The smell of singed hair and flesh radiated throughout the area as she smiled. She may have been defeated, but she gave it her all and that's what was most important.

Barely able to move, she turned her head and saw Houren land after his attack found its mark, surely proud that his tactic worked so perfectly. "Well, I can't say I expected such a move, but well played, Houren. You put on a performance like that back home, and you'll make a great Emperor." she said as she extended her hand to her guildmate as a sign of friendship, showing him that there were indeed no hard feelngs, just as she said. Even though this was a friendly spar and not for the title they both sought, it was still a test of strength nonetheless. She hoped that he would give her a hand to her feet, but if not she would manage well enough. Either way, after getting back to her feet, she would find a place to sit down and lean against a tree in order to rest before they moved on to find the rest of the group.

"That's just the way it goes," he spotted the Frost Dragon Slayer's hand, and duly helped her to her feet.

In terms of pure magical energy expended, the Fire Dragon Slayer didn't feel any particular fatigue, however at the same time he would have been lying if he said that he had actually expected to use this much just from fighting Tori in a friendly spar. Still, the Fire Dragon Slayer had no idea of knowing what kind of tactic Tori had up her sleeve, a plan that would have been successfully executed had it not been for Houren's quick thinking. If she intended to essentially cripple him altogether, then one could argue that the bout had already surpassed the boundaries that would have constituted a ''friendly spar'', but at the same time, he couldn't help but admire her own own dedication to achieving the victory, one that, at the very least, was capable of rivaling his own.

Before the fight began, he had mentally reminded himself to take it easy, to use this spar as an opportunity to gauge Tori's worth as a fellow rival for the Dragon Emperor crown. He hadn't expected, at any point, that he'd be reduced to using one of his signature moves, and in such a roundabout fashion, in order to obtain the victory. The fact that there was a point in time during the fight where Tori had actually managed to exit from Houren's line of sight and had the opportunity to target his blind spot was an excellent feat in itself. He'd need to be wary of her burrowing spell the next time they fought, but for now, getting back to Fiore took precedence over being the ultimate Dragon Slayer.
