What was the meaning of duty? Did it root itself in your very being, or was it something nurtured to the beauty of its blossom? A concept, then, for others to see and laud, praising you for the work you did in tending to it. How insidious could 'duty' be? It could snake through your veins if you weren't careful - tempt you into stability, as if doing what you were told and what was expected of you would keep you warm the way your desires threatened. Something like duty ... well, it hollows you out, one way or another. She wasn't going to let it bloom from her, nor would it take root in her interests.

She came to these catacombs, this defilable church, not for duty: but greed. This kept the scales balanced. She wouldn't let anyone think otherwise. Every step was loud - purposeful, this time - as she strained to make sound with every clack of her heels, tapping the decrepit walls down into the dirt. It was all in defiance. Was she truly so childish? Petulant? Mmm ... the unrest of the spirits this deep in Oak was the fault and responsibility of the Phantom Lord before them, so it keeps to think they should be the ones to take up arms in its restitution.

Well, no. She would do this for the Jewels and not a thought more. It wasn't that she wouldn't enjoy the recognition from her peers, or the gratitude of those in Phantom Lord that still cared to show it for her work on their behalf, but rather ... it wasn't in her nature to take responsibility for others. She had no desire to be culpable nor blamed for something she had no hand in. She would continue to care only for her own end results, and take whatever means might be necessary to clear to that point.

It was the crunch of her pointed, heeled boot as it sunk into the dirt of her final stop that lifted her head from her thoughts. She'd scan these corridors with dull disinterest, fashioning herself deeper with slow, measured steps and less of a statement. Her fingers trailed the walls, still, bleeding shadows where they caressed. The twitch of a keen ear would alert her to the hollow wailing from the damned that still prowled the deep. Very well. If they desired attention, naughty children that they were, she'd be the one to give it to them.

"I do hope you don't complain if it becomes too much," she purrs, thrusting out her arms in a lock that flares a magic seal at their end. Ultraviolet and the shadows it casts. Darkness spills forth, fighting to take shape but bending to her unnatural will until it eases out in thick, writhing tendrils. They shoot outward, through the dark they meet and against decaying walls, and the structure rumbles around her until the feedback brings a glow back to her eyes.

Her hair shifts over her face and she grins. A troubled spirit fades in and barely manages to question her, confused and helpless, before a stitch of her magic digs through it and inks itself around - & around - its blotting form until the phantasm is tied by her spellwork and reduced to bargaining for its final chances. She denies its request with mild indifference, the look it tore from her brief joy a dead eye of dismissal. It is snaked. It is devoured. It is gone.

She spends precious minutes in these crumbling, dirty, ratty holes until she's satisfied with her work; and while the screams increase, shaking through the foundations, they muffle from her efforts until there comes a sense of something darker groaning beneath the surface. It, too, recedes. For now. After all: isn't 'now' all the matters? "Quiet down like good children," she muses, licking a lingering spark of her mana off the tip of her thumb in a broad stroke. "Or I'll have to discipline you further."

She supposes she did her part. With a tinge of disgust, noting the mess it made of her footwear that she cleans off on a church rug, she realizes she might just do it again - at least, for the highest bidder.
