Ikazuchi
Iceberg is a large country that borders Seven, Bosco, Stella, Joya, Bellum, and the Pergrande Kingdom. It’s a cold and brutal country with limited resources. Even their best resources may only be comparable to the worst resources of other countries. This gave birth to a unique culture that is known all over the continent to give birth to countless warriors. Plundering resources became a way of life for the residents of Iceberg, otherwise the residents of this country would eventually meet an unfortunate end.

If it were only the extreme conditions, it would still be possible for the population to maintain itself. There was another issue, one that caused many people to judge the country as underdeveloped. Their culture led to many smaller settlements developing, but instead of banding together they entered into a civil war. There were many reasons for this, but the primary one was the lack of resources. Settlements that were located closer to the central region struggled to obtain resources from outside the country, so they could only focus inward.

This is the story of how Ikazuchi wanders through the various areas of Iceberg in order to experience the infamous Warrior Country. Seeking further mastery and greater strength, he seeks to test himself in one of the harshest countries on the continent.

“Fuck, this place is cold…” Ikazuchi had modified his gear in order to insulate his gear and donned a thick cloak that would defend against the cold, but he was still unable to adjust to the weather. Iceberg was as unforgiving as rumors indicated, and not something that Ikazuchi had much experience with.

Ikazuchi had a decent amount of survival experience, but most of it couldn’t be applied in such a barren country. Animals weren’t common, and very little vegetation had nutritional value. He had crossed the border only yesterday and had a decent amount of provisions in his bag, but that wasn’t a long term solution. Now that he was intending to spend a long time in the country, he would be forced to adapt.

The easiest way to do so would be learning from the locals, but he would only be met with hostility here. ‘I will be relying on you guys.’ Ikazuchi’s right hand rested on the hilts of his swords that were currently attached to each side of his waist. They were his partners that would allow him to roam freely in Iceberg, and the answer to his future difficulties. He couldn’t be sure for how long, but he would be doing his best to become stronger and improve his swordsmanship during his stay.

Ikazuchi didn’t have a particular destination in mind as he roamed through the rugged terrain. He didn’t feel the need to complicate the situation by trying to determine his course in advance. There was a guaranteed encounter that would seek him out even if he proceeded aimlessly, so he just focused on acclimating.

What the young man didn’t know was that he had long since been marked by a group of raiders that had a settlement nearby. They naturally wouldn’t be able to sneak up on him easily, but it also wasn’t easy for Ikazuchi to counter their tracking methods. In the country of Iceberg existed a unique species of bird that the tribes used as a familiar due to its unique ocular abilities. As a bird it naturally possessed exceptional sight, but more important than that was the ability to share its sight with the individual that formed a pact with it.

It was thanks to these inconspicuous familiars that the raiders were able to freely maintain their lifestyle. The only way to distinguish a familiar from a normal bird was by understanding the animal’s behaviour, but that didn’t mean that you could prevent it by recognizing it. These birds were generally out of reach for a mage, let alone someone like Ikazuchi.

As the sun set, Ikazuchi found himself setting up camp in order to withstand the freezing cold night. Darkness didn’t hinder him, but the cold and unfamiliar terrain weren’t favorable at night. For him, camping during this time was an act that allowed him to avoid a minor inconvenience. For the raiders stalking him though, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to attack him.

Most people would gradually weaken after exploring all day, and they would be easier to deal with if you targeted them while they were tired. Unfortunately, they would soon find out that it wasn’t so easy to target Ikazuchi. While the young man may lack experience in this terrain, he still possessed an abnormally strong body. He could maintain his peak state for longer than most, and the cover of night wouldn’t hinder him.

It was for that reason that the young man noticed raiders carelessly approaching from the shadows of the terrain. ‘I knew that they would come.’ With that thought, Ikazuchi exited his shelter directly and focused on the direction that the group approached from. There wasn’t any hesitation as he drew his swords, he intended to cause a bloodbath under the hazy moonlight.

The group understood when they saw Ikazuchi’s lone figure with his swords in hand that they had no reason to bother with a stealthy approach. The fact that he stood prepared facing in their direction indicated that he was prepared to face them. This was surprising, but still expected for the group. Caution was normal for travellers in this area, so they could only ever be slightly surprised when someone noticed them first.

“ATTACK!” A roaring shout came from the largest of the several men ordering the others forward. Considering his physique, it was to be expected that he was the strongest of the group. That would also make the man the leader considering the culture in Iceberg respected strength above all else. It was precisely due to this fact that Ikazuchi hoped to obtain the valuable experience needed to hone his skills to the next level here.

Ikazuchi swept his gaze around and noted roughly twenty men who were equipped in heavy armor wielding a wide variety of weapons from his stationary location. ‘Let’s see how they hold their own.’ As Ikazuchi thought this, one of the men had approached within melee range. He wielded a heavy hammer that was being swung at a deceivingly fast speed. ‘You’ll be the first one.

The raider wielding the hammer had an arrogant smile on his face as he took great strides forward and swung his hammer towards Ikazuchi horizontally, as if to sweep him away with one blow. The other raiders had also slowed their advance and allowed this particular warrior to attempt to handle Ikazuchi.

Ikazuchi couldn’t help but grin as he subconsciously understood the situation. It could only mean two things when this situation occurred. These raiders could truly possess a warrior’s pride, or they may simply be underestimating Ikazuchi. Either way, it was likely that they would soon regret that.

The swing was coming from Ikazuchi’s left side, so he responded by simply swatting at the hammer with Damocles in response. The young man held nothing back, even intentionally empowering strike with his relic. This caused that large hammer to escape the hands of the raider and fly far into the distance due to Ikazuchi’s seemingly casual strike. Had this encounter occurred during the day, the several spectating raiders would have witnessed the hammer breaking into several pieces. The man who swung the hammer was shocked, his hands bloody due to having the weapon forcefully removed from his hands. His eyes couldn’t widen further as fear crept its way into his heart. The smiling Ikazuchi certainly looked frightening at this moment.

“Don’t worry, it will all be over soon.” Ikazuchi couldn’t help himself when he saw that man’s expression. He spoke a sentence that would be harmless at any other time, but terrifying under these circumstances. The confidence required for someone to state such a thing when surrounded could be considered astounding.

The man attempted to retreat after hearing that statement, but Ikazuchi wouldn’t allow that. Spellcutter pierced forward skillfully before the man could take a second step, stabbing straight through the man’s throat. Along with that stab came the mysterious strength of Ikazuchi’s relic that sent the lifeless body flying ten meters backwards into one of his allies.

Ikazuchi once more swept his gaze across his surroundings and noted the expressions that could be read. ‘Now that’s interesting…’ He had grown accustomed to seeing fear or confusion in response to a display like his, so he was surprised to see only anger and excitement among those present. It was becoming more apparent by the moment why the raiders of Iceberg were considered warriors despite their widespread infamy. At the very least, they wouldn’t back down easily. Thankfully for Ikazuchi, this was precisely the kind of environment that he needed in order to grow.

“Who’s next?” Ikazuchi questioned the group without wavering, seeming as if he were the one in the superior position. This naturally enraged the raiders present as four men rushed at Ikazuchi. People who lived their life on edge, constantly plundering resources through violence, weren’t likely to be calm and collected. The ones that didn’t rush forward only held back due to their pride as warriors after seeing several men rush forward.

As for those four, they each wielded a sword or axe and seemed to have a certain amount of understanding between each other. Ikazuchi assumed that this was due to their activities together; it wouldn’t be strange for long-time companions to work together.

Initially, the four quickly shifted positions and attacked one after the other. Weapons could be difficult to use as a group versus one person due to the potential for friendly fire, but they still managed to occasionally launch simultaneous attacks occasionally. Ikazuchi was able to deal with that easily though, as long as he managed his positioning and kept track of his opponents, it wouldn’t be easy to get through his defenses. The area within two meters of him could be considered his domain, something that these four wouldn’t be able to easily invade.

‘This isn’t bad…’ Ikazuchi felt excitement as passively defended against the four raiders. The men weren’t excessively strong, but they were skillful enough to allow him to feel the pressure that he needed to hone his skills. This particular instance gave him ample opportunity to experience the best methods to move while parrying in order to manage the distance and positioning of his opponents.

Most of his focus was spent on extending the fight with the four, so Ikazuchi failed to notice the serious expressions of the remaining raiders. Their demeanor was shifting as they saw how easy it was for Ikazuchi to manage the four who were targeting him. He seemed passive to those participating, but a spectator could see more during this bout.

Seeing the young man ignore the openings to attack could only be described as frustrating form them, or even infuriating. They valued their reputation as warriors, so the sight of their fellow countrymen being toyed with couldn’t be ignored. They couldn’t even mention this fact as it could cause their comrades who were engaging Ikazuchi to make a mistake. The silent spectators had all silently acknowledged the dual swordsman, but also unanimously given him a death sentence in their hearts.

Eventually, Ikazuchi adjusted and was able to grasp the pattern used by these four. This increased how easily he could deal with them, and gradually exhausted the men. ‘This is their limit?’ He couldn’t help but feel disappointed, but it was only natural that the pressure provided by the average person couldn’t stimulate him excessively. The young man had long exceeded the standards used to judge the average person, so quantity would only go so far during the process of accumulating experience for him to grow as a swordsman.

Realizing this point, Ikazuchi gradually started to move offensively. It was also at this moment that the four men realized that they were outclassed. Ikazuchi was easily dealing small wounds to various locations on their bodies, but they had yet to even scratch his armor. The anger from before had been replaced by fear and annoyance as they desired to escape from this fight.

Unfortunately, it was too late for that. Ikazuchi’s aggressiveness continued to grow until he successfully reaped the life of one of his attackers. The strike had been a simple thrust, but it had been delivered at a moment when the man’s balance didn’t allow him to avoid. He met the same fate as the first casualty, a pierced throat.

After the first among the four fell, the other three could only follow with greater ease. The significance of dealing with one less combatant showed as Ikazuchi’s position of absolute dominance solidified. It was to the extent that he had the luxury to intentionally finish the remaining few in the same manner as the first, simply by piercing the throats of the men.

Each time he successfully ended a life, he didn’t fail to activate his relic in order to move the body away from the immediate battlefield. The spilt blood was enough of an annoyance, he didn’t wish to trample corpses as he fought. The battle would only become more difficult after his display, so he couldn’t afford to be careless with his footing. As a warrior with excellent stability, he wouldn’t neglect such a fundamental part of combat without reason.

With the four defeated, Ikazuchi found himself alone as he faced a group that was five men shorter. The young man’s expression was neutral, but the simple fact that he stood there without a trace of fear displayed his confidence that was on the verge of arrogance. The only difference was that the gazes of the men looking towards him were serious.

“Who’s next?” Ikazuchi asked this question in the exact same manner that he did previously. It wasn’t any less infuriating for the raiders to hear it again, to know that this young man looked down on them in such a way. But they also weren’t underestimating him anymore, so no one rushed towards him this time.

Ikazuchi couldn’t help but smile slightly as he noticed the new caution. ‘Seems like they aren’t all careless…’ Ikazuchi was thankful to see that they acknowledged him as a threat, but it would also make his life more difficult. They would either rely on their larger numbers, or send their stronger combatants to face him. He wouldn’t care if he simply had to face stronger enemies, but fighting several people at the same time could be annoying even if they were weak.

The quality of his armor wasn’t the same as his weapons, so the durability wouldn’t last anywhere near as long if he were overwhelmed and forced to take hits. He knew this, but he couldn’t back down from the group either. “No one is going to step forward?” It was a question that could agitate the group to attack together, but it was also possible that someone may step forward to protect their pride.

There weren’t any words exchanged by the group, but one particular man responded to Ikazuchi’s question by stepping forward. It was one of the two who had remained near the individual that Ikazuchi identified as a leader previously. It was likely that this man was considered to have a higher position within the group, so it was impossible for him to be weaker than the previous few who the young man had defeated.

“What’s your name?” The raider that stepped forward questioned Ikazuchi. This was something that he hadn’t initially expected, but it wasn’t surprising considering his previous display. “Ikazuchi.” He answered the question directly without any hesitation due to his own pride. If he couldn’t maintain his pride in front of another warrior, then he would have trained in vain.

“Joyan?” The man had approached within five meters of Ikazuchi as he asked this second question. “My father was from Joya.” Ikazuchi didn’t hide this fact either as he was proud of the father that raised him and made him the warrior that he is today. The raider nodded in response to this answer as if it were only natural. This time, it was Ikazuchi’s turn to question the man. “And your name is?”

“Bjorn.” With that response, the man readied his weapon and as Ikazuchi nodded in response. The two were solemn as they inched towards one another. In a melee fight, range was an important factor used to determine a victor. Neither wished to arbitrarily enter the range of the other as it could result in an opening. If there was a difference, then it would be why they approached the situation cautiously.

Bjorn needed to be careful due to the prowess displayed by the young man previously. Ikazuchi, on the other hand, simply wished to avoid the situation becoming more complicated after defeating Bjorn. His confidence prevented him from seeing someone such as Bjorn as a serious threat. If the two were compared, Ikazuchi easily possessed the qualities of an S-Ranked Warrior. Comparing the two, Bjorn’s level was only barely approaching A-Rank.

What Ikazuchi actually needed to do was defeat Bjorn without the man weakening him for the stronger combatants that were observing a short distance away. That was the intent that he had as Ikazuchi firmly stepped into the range of Bjorn’s unique axe. The raider didn’t hesitate to unleash a horizontal attack intended to cleave into Ikazuchi at that moment.

Ikazuchi responded by quickly clashing Damocles with the man’s axe in order to defend against the attack. He could have avoided the attack, but he had the strength and weapon quality advantage. The man would have to be stronger than Ikazuchi in order for the act of clashing to not be viable, and Bjorn was simply not.

Sparks flew from the weapons as the raider roared and attempted to exert more force in order to break through Ikazuchi’s guard. The ground beneath Ikazuchi’s feet cracked due to the force, but he remained stationary as if he had been rooted in place. The strength of his body wasn’t something to be underestimated, and it was more apparent than ever when comparing him to Bjorn who failed to knock him away.

‘You have to try harder than that!’ Ikazuchi went to step forward at this moment causing Bjorn to want to retreat backwards, but the young man was quicker. As his right foot planted into the ground close to Bjorn, his right fist rose upwards to strike Bjorns chin with his full force. At the same time, he actively empowered the strike with his relic causing the raider to soar upwards ten meters.

Ikazuchi quickly adjusted his position to the precise spot that Bjorn would descend and judged the timing for him to reach the ground. He was extremely focused as he observed due to his passion for battle being ignited during their last clash. As Bjorn descended, Ikazuchi adjusted slightly and perfectly timed a relic empowered kick to strike the man’s body as he attempted to orientate himself.

That strike sent the grown man careening towards the side, but Ikazuchi wasn’t done at this point. He lunged in pursuit, quickly catching up to the man at an extremely rapid speed. Bjorn could only land in a somewhat kneeling position after the consecutive knockbacks, so he was naturally frightened to see Ikazuchi appear immediately.

The man’s experience could only worsen at this point as Ikazuchi’s style shifted to an extremely aggressive one that focused on power. He swung his swords over and over on top of the man’s axe that he managed to put between the two, completely disregarding the defense in a way that didn’t match his skillful display earlier. More than one of the spectators broke out in a cold sweat as they realized the seemingly calm and skillful fighter went berserk suddenly.

Ikazuchi

The fight had become extremely one-sided from the moment Ikazuchi’s style shifted. He had dominated previously as well, but it was only now becoming apparent how strong he actually was. It was the kind of display that could dredge up the inferiority of an apparently weaker fighter.

None of the raiders were cowards, and they would all be proud to die in combat. That could be considered an honor for a warrior. But at the same time, no one wished to die while being trampled on. Even if they were willing to fight, they still had to consider the livelihood of those who relied on their return. The purpose of their pillaging couldn’t be forgotten, even if the men had long since come to enjoy it.

That was why even these battle-hardened men found themselves retreating as they watched the scars appear on the axe protecting Bjorn. The blood pouring from the split skin all over the raider was the clearest indicator of the force behind each of Ikazuchi’s blows. The only man who hadn’t faltered after witnessing Ikazuchi’s prowess was the leader of the group. The mix of rage for Bjorn’s sake, and excitement to fight were clear. This was someone who truly lived for combat, someone who was innately passionate about battle.

As Bjorn’s resistance steadily lessened, Ikazuchi found himself rapidly losing interest in fighting with the man. This left Ikazuchi feeling as though he hadn’t even warmed up despite having faced six people including Bjorn. Filled with disappointment, Ikazuchi unleashed one last attack that was empowered by his relic to send a seemingly lifeless Bjorn back to the group of raiders.

WIthout a clean killing blow dealt, there was hope for the battered raider to survive so a couple of men actively received Bjorn and retreated a distance away in order to check his condition. A third man who stood near the leader had separated from the group to move to those two. Ikazuchi noted this, as well as the man’s distinctive difference in appearance and the fact that he was the sole individual who could use magic among the group.

Wariness had developed immediately after realizing that this man was a mage. Ikazuchi was painfully aware about the trickiness of mages, so he couldn’t neglect the presence of one after becoming aware. It was to the extent that he would immediately kill this man if possible. Unfortunately, the young swordsman wouldn’t get that chance as the leader was finally stepping forward.

The ring on the leader’s hand flashed as two as two heavy axes appeared in each of his hands. ‘A fellow dual weapon wielder?’ Ikazuchi’s interest was immediately piqued by this detail, and the hot-blooded feeling from earlier returned. “It seems like you’re the strongest of the group?” Mana seemed to radiate from Ikazuchi’s body as he spoke as the air seemed to faintly blur and twist around his person.

The leader of the group smiled and responded confidently to Ikazuchi as a similar effect was produced from his body. “I am indeed, my name is Erik.” Erik proceeded to brandish his axes a couple of times, as if to warm up in preparation for the coming fight. It was only after taking a couple more practice swings that he asked Ikazuchi a question in return. “Why would you bother coming to this barren place?”

Ikazuchi couldn’t help but smile a bit in response as he contemplated the best way to answer the question for a moment. “Why else would a Warrior travel to the country of Warriors?” This was the response that Ikazuchi had decided on after that brief period of deliberation. There were many reasons that he could provide, but the meaning behind that question contained his truest intentions. As for Erik, he could only smile in response to the question as well.

The only reason that a warrior would travel all the way to the inhospitable country that was Iceberg would be in order to earn respect as a warrior. Erik had suspected this, but he couldn’t stop a slight bit of respect from appearing within his gaze as he looked towards Ikazuchi. A young man who looked to barely be out of his teenage years had appeared before them as a fellow warrior.

While it may not be possible to forget the lives that Ikazuchi had claimed, it was also impossible for men in their culture to look down on a like-minded individual. The respect from Erik grew even more as the man compared himself to the young man that had initially only been a target in the eyes of their group. Their strength seemed to be pretty similar, but Erik was already forty this year. When factoring in potential, it was enough to make the old man from Iceberg feel regretful that such a talented warrior hadn’t been born in their tribe.

The reason for their battle had long become irrelevant to the two. The spectators distanced themselves from the two who would soon be clashing as they watched with bated breath. Even if they were unable to step forward to face Ikazuchi, these were still the warriors of their tribe. It was impossible for the clash between Ikazuchi and Erik to not grab their attention.

The two warriors approached each other with measured steps, adjusting the positioning slightly as they relied on their observation capabilities to predict the attack of the other. Ikazuchi’s movements were less precise than Erik’s,but he was making up for the difference with his own raw talent. Even a warrior who was twenty years his senior wouldn’t easily engage him due to this.

They had yet to clash, but it was clear that the battle had already begun. Their stances continued to shift until Ikazuchi’s patience ran out. He stabbed at an opening with Spellcutter that he was almost certain had intentionally been made by Erik, but he attacked despite believing that to be the case. Ikazuchi believed that his skills and strength could make up for the disadvantageous situation that he found himself in.

As for Erik, he had indeed left this opening as bait for the young man. Erik’s axes were shorter than Ikazuchi’s swords, so he needed a proper opening in order to enter his ideal range. The axes of the raider were heavier battle axes that were intended for a power fight from a closer range, so Ikazuchi would suffer if Erik managed to capitalize on his actions.

Fortunately for the young man, his reaction was a perfect counter to Erik’s sneaky approach to his right side. The young man pivoted on his left leg to follow Erik’s direction of approach in order to keep his weapons between Erik and himself. Damocles cut across horizontally as he did so, providing him the chance to properly adjust his footing and prepare a second strike with Spellcutter.

Erik swayed backwards from the slash causing a near miss to occur before pushing inward again. Ikazuchi’s left arm turned after his miss in order to prepare Damocles for it’s follow-up strike as Spellcutter thrust out after having been drawn back previously. Ikazuchi believed that he had caught his opponent due to the timing, but he would soon be surprised.

Erik relied on the maneuverability of his smaller weapons in order to use one to redirect the thrust to his side, even as he noticed Damocles slashing towards his waist. The man didn’t panic at all as he used his second weapon to directly clash with Ikazuchi’s second attack. Sparks danced off of the weapons that shook as the two men struggled to over power the other at this moment. Neither had any intention to back down as they proceeded to rapidly clash blows back and forth after that exchange. Both men were pushing their observational capabilities to the limit as they actively tried to predict and control the movements of their opponent. At a high level, combat would only become more complex. Ikazuchi hadn’t reached this level, but he was aware that upon reaching the absolute pinnacle he wouldn’t even need to use his eyes in order to perceive those that he was fighting.

With such a grand goal in mind, he could only challenge the older and more experienced warriors in an attempt to progress his swordsmanship to a higher level. He naturally appreciated a skillful warrior like Erik who had the experience that Ikazuchi could learn from, and found himself engrossed with their exchanges even as scratches decorated his armor.

As for Erik, he felt torn to face an individual like Ikazuchi who possessed talent, strength, and even quality weapons. His pride made him jealous of such an individual, but his beliefs caused the middle-aged man to respect a youth that was half his age. Somewhere in the back of their mind, they couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like if they weren’t currently battling to the death.

Their stationary clashing slowly became more and more mobile as the two bounced around several meters at a time. Neither gave the other the space needed to take a breath. It was a constant tug of war that was occurring at extremely high speeds. During several of their clashes, the only indication of their attacks were the sparks from the axes and swords interacting.

The ground cracked in several locations due to the force of their attacks. The spectators even had to retreat even further in order to avoid the calamitous battle. It was impressive for the two to have battled to the extent that they had, but someone was bound to make a mistake after several minutes of high intensity battle.

A steel helmet flew into the air as the two men separated. A few drops of blood splashed onto the cold ground as two burning hot gazes intersected. ‘This fucking guy…’ Ikazuchi’s adrenaline shot through the roof as he had just barely caught the last attack on his helmet. Had he been a second slower to shift his head, Erik’s axe would have crushed into his face through the helmet's weak point for the eyes. Ikazuchi didn’t hesitate to rush back at Erik despite the near death experience he just had. He didn’t have any stray thoughts clouding his judgement at this moment. His focus was at its peak due to the adrenaline coursing through him. His situation seemed worse, but his performance was only improving by the second. This was something that shocked Erik as it was abnormal even among the residents of Iceberg.

Their clashes resumed in the same manner as before, but they were progressing differently than before. The flow had mostly been controlled by the more experienced Erik during the clashes until now, but Ikazuchi’s current state allowed him to overcome his weaknesses and react better than before. It could even be said that without his helmet hindering his peripheral vision, he would have been performing better even without the excessive amount of adrenaline.

In exchange for greater risks to himself, Ikazuchi was able to overwhelm Erik in ways that he hadn’t been able to before. With more access to his senses, Ikazuchi’s talent was being fully displayed as the slight hesitations due to a lack of experience were made up for with his senses. It was certainly a stunning sight for the spectators as they hadn’t expected Ikazuchi to compare to their leader.
