Nuala

Another day, another quest. Nuala wasn’t dying to do additional work, but she knew that she had to. The west was much different from the region she used to reside in and while there was always plenty of work in Dahlia City, the jobs itself had always been the same: kill werewolves, kill vampires, kill all sorts of shady creatures and people and collect your money in the morning. For as long as it kept the citizens of the town from being eaten, things worked out well. After all, their guild needed something to rule over – and how would that work out, if all the villagers fell victim to the countless beasts roaming in from the bordering forests? Well, things were much different now and Nuala found herself in a town that really didn’t need that sort of protection. She had left Oak temporarily, it wasn’t far from her especially considering the mount she had and she wanted to see what this place was all about. Apparently Baska Town also always offered a multitude of jobs and the thief was in desperate need for some money. As she was walking through the town, her ears perked up and she started listening around to what the townsfolk were talking about and if anything interesting was going on.

People in small towns such as Baska were always rather chatty. It was almost like a personality trait, shared between the citizens of such smaller places – they loved gossip, they loved eavesdropping, not minding their business and just being obnoxious and overall annoying. Apparently, with the city being in a politically neutral field, there were all sorts of people to be found here. From your usual merchants and travelers, mages from guilds frequently travelled to Baska to participate in tournaments or look for work. Additionally, there were also a bunch of former rune knights that had lost their position due to rather questionable circumstances, which Nuala found quite interesting. She had no interest in mingling with the unlawful more than she did, but those who fell from grace and ended up in a shitty place like this caught her interest in a different matter. There were also plenty of mercenaries but even in spite of that, the town never ran out of work to do. She supposed that it was due to the frequently held tournaments that Baska had enough traffic and therefor enough people coming through the city, leaving their money here and keeping the citizens well fed throughout all of it.

The tournaments in particular were something that interested Nuala. They were small-scale battles between all sorts of individuals, mostly big and broad men, mercenaries who were looking for easy money. There were also people who were actively making bets on the current fighters and Nuala didn’t doubt that there was no small scale of active participants, excited viewers and the possibility to earn some good coin. Now, Nuala certainly didn’t look big or broad, and she wasn’t all that muscular (at least not visibly), but that didn’t mean that she couldn’t hold up in a fight like that. Nuala had gotten into a lot of bar brawls in the past, mostly with men who had gotten a little too confident with her, but she was used to using weapons, being stealthy and fighting unfair fights to gain the opposite hand. Direct combat wasn’t exactly her strength, but she was certain that with such normies, she could easily win. The question was whether or not the money was worth the effort at all, but if she could find out about the prize money she might change her mind. Nuala was now walking around town with that plan in mind. If it didn’t work she could always go looking for a different job, knowing that there were plenty of things to do in Baska anyways.

After snooping around for a bit more, Nuala decided to visit the local tavern to get more information. It was around the middle of the day now and she figured a place like that was most likely to give her the info that she needed. The tavern itself wasn’t too central, but filled with people regardless. Travelers and locals were sitting around the table and enjoying a meal - it was lunch time after all. Nuala wasn’t hungry, but she could go for a drink. She entered the tavern and due to the large number of travelers in Baska, the people didn’t really pay her any heed. It was normal for strangers to be around, and no one really cared anymore. Nuala took a seat by the bar and ordered a honey ale, a disgustingly sweet drink she had grown fond of over the years. The bartender was a middle aged lady who clearly had been working here all her life. She probably knew the type of person Nuala was just by looking at her and the daemon decided that perhaps this woman could help her. After taking a sip from her drink, Nuala decided to get into conversation with her. “I heard the Great Baska Rock is often used as a site for tournaments,” she began and looked up at the woman. The bartender nodded swiftly and moved over to her. She was cleaning a mug in the meantime. “Yeah, actually, all the time. If you are interested in participating, I’m sure you can find someone there who is willing to instruct you. Personally, I don’t care for it much but the travelers coming through everyday all seem to.” Nuala nodded. That was good enough for her.

Nuala went back to minding her own business after that. She decided to have a drink and eventually leave to see what the Great Baska Rock was all about. From what she knew, it was a giant rock - really, it was massive and she wondered how it came to be - that was big enough for people to use it as an actual tournament arena. There was always someone gathered there and she figured that sooner or later, Nuala would run into someone who could help her out. Surprisingly, just as the woman had almost finished her drink, she was approached by a stranger. It was a man with dark hair and blue eyes. He seemed to be middle aged for a human and his snake-like eyes promised trouble. He was dressed in black and even though Nuala couldn’t immediately spot any weapons on him, she didn’t doubt that he was armed. Something she did notice or rather heard however was the clinking sound of gold coins in his pouch. That caught her interest. She knew how these types of things usually went down, so Nuala put her drink down and turned towards him. “I happened to overheard what you were saying earlier and I couldn’t help but approach you,” he started the conversation and Nuala nodded quietly.

Clearly this was about the tournament. “What about it? Do you know someone who organizes the fights or something?” She asked in return and he nodded eagerly in response. “I do actually, and if you want to participate I am willing to work together,” he said and Nuala was suddenly all ears. She didn’t know yet why she wanted someone to work with, considering that a tournament like that wasn’t a team fight but the daemon could be convinced. The man then proceeded to explain to her how the tournament worked and there was currently a champion, a large man by the name of Arthur, who had been winning all the fights recently and earned a lot of money through them. Apparently he had a so-called sponsor - that sponsor collected bids and he also bid on his own fighter to increase the amount of reward money. In the end, that guy was basically looking for a champion of his own, someone to defeat Arthur and bring home the large sum of prize money. Nuala found that to be quite interesting but logical. Of course she could go there on her own, but lacking a sponsor meant she would only receive a smaller reward. Apparently they could maximise the sum together.

The thief thought a bit about it. In a way, she was definitely interested but at the same time Nuala couldn’t help but wonder what type of people and fighters she would encounter. Once a Voidling, Nuala used to be strong and sturdy and she could even transform to gain an extra amount of strength, speed and endurance - but those days were gone and she now had to rely on less physical power to win. Not that the daemon thought that was much of a problem, to be honest. She had been working out a lot recently and come to the conclusion that while demons weren’t as strong as what she used to be, at least physically, there was definitely a lot of untapped potential for her to reach into. Besides, Nuala thought that if she learned more about the race she had obtained then perhaps she would be able to use her strength more effectively. At this point she was kind of just going around trying to figure out how to manage everything. Still, the question remained: should she accept the offer? The guy was promising her loads and loads of money if she did and honestly? Nuala was tempted enough. In the end, there probably wasn’t anything better to do with her time anyways, so she took the hand he had offered her and shook it firmly. “It’s a deal then,” the man said and Nuala nodded eagerly. “If you have any tips for me on how to handle this then now would be a good time to share them,” she suggested and so they began brooding over another cup of ale and some peanuts. It took them around one more hour to discuss the terms and he also questioned Nuala’s combat ability. Luckily, the thief knew plenty about hand to hand techniques and how to knock someone out. But perhaps she was only overestimating the humans who would be stepping into the ring: even without any fancy race related powers, the purple haired woman was a force to be reckoned with.

Nuala went back to the motel she was staying at with a rather good feeling in her stomach. Tomorrow were a few qualifier matches and if she could make it through them, then she actually had a chance at good money. In hindsight, there was really nothing stopping her from kicking over a few mortals and making easy money. The past few months had been hard on her both physically and mentally but she was still strong. Nuala returned to her room and closed the door behind herself quietly before looking into the wooden mirror, wondering when she had begun doubting herself like that. She wasn’t the self-conscious type so it must have come with the fall of the guild and everything around it. Whatever, it didn’t matter now. She took a shower and went to sleep. The next day Nuala chose an attire that was suitable for fighting, but not entirely unusual from what she usually wore: black pants, black combat boots an a well fitting leather shirt that showed her shape, but not the muscle hiding beneath the clothing. Nuala then headed to the great Baska Rock, where Lindon – that was the name of the guy she was working with – was already waiting for her.

Nuala

The rules were simple enough. All Nuala really had to do was to defeat a bunch of these guys and the big guy in the end and they would go home with the money. Nuala could do that. She looked around and checked out her competition. Most of them were big sturdy men, but the thief could immediately see some weaknesses. Some were clearly drunkards. Alcohol hurt the physique and physical fitness, so that would be easy. Some were smoking, which was yet another bad habit. And some of them clearly had been through a few fights recently and probably weren’t at their best in the first place. The announcement of the beginning of the tournament was announced shortly after and Nuala quickly hopped into line. There were around 8 participants in total, but luckily Nuala didn’t have to deal with all of them.

They would mostly knock out each other until one person was left standing. That last person got to challenge the champion and if they were able to defeat them, they would walk out with an extra large sum of prize money. Easy enough, in her opinion. She would have to defeat a total of 3 people and the champion and then she would be able to go home with good money. Nuala went into the ring and took her jacket off. Her hair was up in a ponytail. The first guy was a large, tattooed white male. He was surprisingly easy to take out. He went straight for her, clearly underestimating her, but Nuala dodged his fist by ducking downwards and then, with a swift kick of her heel against his temple, knocked him out. He fell to the ground, unconscious and Nuala had won her first match in a matter of minutes. The next match was happening immediately.

The next guy, who had taken a bit longer to win his first match, wasn’t as tall but clearly more mobile and quicker than her first opponent. He was a medium sized man, with tan skin and dark brown eyes. He also didn’t make the mistake of underestimating her and Nuala had to juggle around him for a bit, swiftly dodging most of his attacks and blocking them, if she wasn’t fast enough to dodge them. She took him out by aiming from underneath again, her clenched first smashing into his chin and shattering his jaw. At that point, it became blatantly clear that the purple haired woman possessed inhumane strength and by the time the third match, the little finale, started, everyone was weary of her.

Nuala wasn’t out of breath yet whatsoever and she figured that fighting these mortal men didn’t end up being much of a challenge. She had fought werewolves, vampires, monsters with more prowess, for much more prolonged times, so this ended up being easy money. It was a relief somehow, because Nuala hadn’t really planned on getting hurt here in Baska in the first place. The final match was one just as swiftly, by kicking away his legs and using a little bit more force this time, putting her enemy into a choke hold and pressing down on his throat until he willingly gave up. The champion himself then stepped into the ring, and this time Nuala decided to show off a little. He went straight for her with his right, which she then side stepped and punched into his incoming arm with such force, that it broke. The pain clearly got to him, because it took him a moment to recover from the shock.

Nuala used that moment of defencelessness, to knock him out just like she had done with the first guy: a clean kick against his temple. Afterwards, she was announced as the winner of the tournament and given the prize money. It was a decent sum, enough to get her through the next few weeks or so. And definitely enough for what Nuala had been planning to do for a while now.
