HomeAnother day, another call for a job to do here in the city of Orchid. It was just him and Keita now as the other two knights had gone away on ventures of their own for a little while. Shichiro was currently hanging out in the lobby waiting for his partner, Keita as his other partner was currently on his shoulder for the most part. Panther Lily was busy munching on some fruit Shichiro had given him beforehand. It was no Kiwi but it was still pretty good. They had received an urgent summons to the guild via the request of the farmer they had helped out previously in order to come to their farm once more. This time a more urgent matter had been filed as it seems there was a large pack of Coyotes leaving not too far from their farms. They had been feuding with rats for some time for control of the area closest to the farm and one of the farm hands discovered the location of their "battlegrounds'' the farmers had specifically asked for the two of them by name and was hoping the duo would meet up with them again for more details. Shichiro simply chuckled at the sound of this as he waited for Keita to arrive in order to relay what had just been said.

Keita was up and ready to start the day today, and as it turned out, there was another mission that Shichiro graciously signed them up for. This time, it was the farmers that were having problems again, and it wa because the coyotes and the rats had been fighting among themselves over the territory close to the farm, so both of them had to go and wipe them all out. He wondered if they were going to be in the fields again, and had to be really carefulp about the plants and other infrastructure around the farm. As much as he appreciated not making life harder for people, he also wanted to ‘stretch’ his proverbial legs and really go to town on the coyotes and rats with his earth magic. He shrugged to himself as he headed towards the meeting area that Shichiro told him about before, so that they could get going with the mission. As he was walking, he wondered if they had had a hand in the sudden attack and escalation of the territory war between the rats and the coyotes, by inadvertently culling too many rats, making the coyotes more confident to kill them. As Keita saw Shichiro in the distance, he was thinking about asking him.

Waiting patiently for Keita, Shichiro looked around the lobby a bit. He must say this guild was a lot smaller than the ones he's heard about but overall it wasn't too shabby. Just then, Keita had pulled into the lobby area for Shichiro to greet. "Hey there Keita! Have you heard of it? We've been summoned again by those farmers we helped out last time. We're to go meet them at their farm once more today and see what they need for us to do," Shichiro said, a bit chipper. He was in a pretty good mood today but he wasn't exactly sure why. It was best to not think about it too much and just go on ahead with the briefing. "Well, it seems like our last mission had the opposite effect of what was intended as it turns out by culling one said, we've emboldened the other side. We've killed primarily rats that night to thin out the herd and now the Coyotes are feeling better about their chances of driving out the rats for good. I'm a little impressed they are smart enough to go after their rivals in a time like this. We won't know the exact whereabouts until we meet up with the farmers again though."

Keita walked into the slightly small building and saw his cousin Shichiro sitting there, and he stood up and greeted him immediately. Shichiro then started to explain that they were going to need to head back to the farm that they had helped last time, as something else was going on there. Keita nodded, as he had been briefed a bit on the request as well, and it stated that a disproportionate amount of coyotes were in the area this time and needed to be gotten rid of. “Yeah, the coyotes right?” Keita would ask as Shichiro would go and continue on with what he had been explaining. Shichiro then explained that they had killed too many rats and that this meant that the coyotes came over and started attacking the rats once the number of rats went down. This was basically what Keita had thought originally, and now that Shichiro was explaining everything in detail, it simply confirmed his suspicions. “Yeah, it was strange reading about it and sort of putting together my own ideas about how smart they are.” Keita would say, before his brow furrowed as he thought about it. “Hmm, this means it’ll be more dangerous for us, right?”

"You're telling me, I didn't expect this at all either. Not only are they large but they're cunning too. Well, now that we know what we're up against, let's go make our way there. The faster we do this, the better before it gets too out of hand," Shichiro said, sighing a bit but keeping his smile. With that, he'd place his hands into his pockets and began to exit the lobby of the neutral guild building. Making his way back to the outskirt forest of Orchid, he had taken his time traveling through it now that he had a better grasp of the path towards the farms and farmhouses. Eventually, he made it there as he saw the large crop field in the distance. By this time, Panther Lily had finished eating the fruit he was munching on earlier before turning to look at the large crop field as well. Once again, Shichiro would take a moment to admire how vast it was before heading in the direction he last remembered that would lead to the farmer's house. On his way there, he saw the gardening tool he was going to borrow on their last run still present and intact which made him chuckle a bit.

Shichiro said that the animals were larger and smarter than they originally thought, and this was something that was figured out by Keita already, but there was something about that that still unsettled Keita, as he was still cautious against things with sentience that probably should not have it. He was all fine if the animals were a bit more sentient and realized that they did not need to murder and pillage to get their food, but the ones that gained sentience only to think that they could compete with humans and make them their prey worried him, because those could actually band together and form strategies much better than other beasts of prey. Keita would follow Shichiro towards the farm, and soon they would see the large stretch of farm land in front of them, which was quite beautiful, although there was a massive amount of ground to cover. Keita wondered how many people the farmers hired to help them, although he did not see any of them, as there was no way that the couple of farmers could maintain this gigantic field, harvest it, and sell it as well as maintain the house at the same time. Keita would wave to the farmers as they got close.

Arriving at the home of the farmers, he didn't really see anybody at first glance. Walking towards the porch of the house, he stepped onto the property and began to knock on the door. He didn't hear any answer which caused him to knock on the door a second time. Once again, no answer so Shichiro just gave Keita a puzzled look before he reached for the doorknob in order to proceed to enter. He normally wouldn't do this but he had a bad feeling about this despite only meeting these people once. Walking inside, Shichiro had looked around in the general vicinity he was currently in. All he could see was the hallway directly in front of him and part of the living room to his right. Slowly entering in, he had stepped onto a weaker part of the floorboard which made a large creaking sound. Coming from the right and out of the living room, a large, snarling coyote had sprinted towards Shichiro as fast as it could. A bit startled Shichiro had stepped back a bit as he didn't really see it coming. Panther Lily on the other hand knew something was up and had his guard up since they stepped on the porch, leaping from Shichiro's shoulder and slashing the beast in two.

They were walking towards the farmers’ house down the road, and Keita was admiring the lovely scenery that was all around them, as a plethora of flowers were growing on the sides of the roads like weeds, and one could tell that the farmers left them alone for the most part, as they were quite overgrown and had their leaves near the bottom stretching out onto the road that they were walking on. As they got further and closer to the house, it seemed like the farmers were not outside, and so they had to go up top the door and knock. The farmers should have been expecting them, but there was not much they could do about them simply not being there when they arrived. After a bit, the two of them entered the house, and immediately Shichiro was attacked by a large coyote that seemed to be in the house before them, but Shichiro’s pet quickly sliced it in half, the flesh falling on the ground in a heap. Keita looked in his robe and saw his little lemur pet, knowing that it could not do the same thing. Keita then looked around the house, noticing that there was no additional blood, but it looked like the house was ransacked.

Shichiro was a bit stunned at what happened a few moments ago. Taking his hands out of his pockets shortly after the vent, he had witnessed his companion, Panther Lily. Panther lily had shrugged at Shichiro, shooting him a quizzical look almost as if he was asking 'what the hell happened to you' Shihciro just exhaled, sighing before keeping his guard up this time. He really didn't expect a Coyote to get inside but anything could happen nowadays. Still, he hoped the farm hands and farmers were okay. Shichiro had turned to see what Keita made out of the situation at hand but he was just being the observant one at the moment, assessing the situation and looking for clues. Well, he had no choice but to walk further into the living room to see what else was going on. The house was ransacked by coyotes but that wasn't all, after traversing further into the house, he had found one of the farmhands dead on the floor, half eaten. It was quite a gruesome sight which almost made Shichiro recoil. He wasn't sure what to make of this but it was clear the coyotes had gotten in pretty far. Well, he was on guard and now as he continued to go in the house.

As Keita and Shichiro were making their way through the house, and as they saw the carnage of everything was essentially destroyed, Keita became very sad as they made it deeper into the house. It seemed like one of the farmhands made it into the house when they were attacked, but the coyote-like beasts got in and attacked them. He did not make it out, and Keita could tell that the coyote beasts did it more for sport, as there were only several chunks missing out of the man at various vital points on his body. The coyotes simply mangled him to death instead of hunting him for food, making Keita more angry than he should be. He had to take a moment to calm himself down as he steeled himself for the rest of the house. As he was going through the house with Shichiro, they got to the segregation point of the den and the kitchen, and he heard some growling and snapping coming from the kitchen. As Keita rounded the corner, he got his magic ready, and he immediately saw that two coyote beasts were fighting amongst themselves for a chunk of meat on the bone that appeared to be from an overturned refrigerator.

Shichiro wasn't sure what to make of this scene but he knew in the end he would have to make a report to the Rune Knights about what had taken place here. He looked around the living room he was currently in to see if there was anything else around that could probably give him some insight of anything else happening. Unfortunately for him, all he could see was a ransacked house. He figured since Keita had gone further into the house on this floor, he would take his time to search the upstairs of the house to see if he could find anything. If he remembered correctly, one his last stay at this house, there was a door leading to a cellar and he instructed his companion Panther Lily, to go down and investigate it. Panther Lily let out a huff but in the end agreed to do it, advising Shichiro to stay on guard this time around. Shichiro simply shrugged, rolling his eyes saying it happens once in a while. Not like he would get hurt with all of the protective and magical gear he was currently wearing. With that, he would proceed to backtrack to the entrance of the house and go up the stairs instead.

The farm house was not that large, but it had a couple of connected buildings that were for storage, and then there was a large barn and stable for the various animals, but Keita did not have many good feelings about finding the missing farmers in either of those places as they were far to open and easy to attack by the creatures, especially the stables with how open it was. As he was walking through the rest of the house, he saw that Kizmaru’s little, or should he say large, pet ran towards the basement, and Keita thought about it for a moment and decided to go down there as well. He was pretty useless in a place completely covered in wood and drywall, so going down to the stone basement would allow him to work his magic. As he opened the door to the basement and started walking down after the panther lily, suddenly his flying lemur Scrat popped out of his pocket and started sniffing the air. Scrat then popped out of his coat pocket and flew over into the kitchen, and started digging through the drawers. The place was already obliterated, so he could not do much more harm, and it would be better if he stayed here where they had already cleared out the beasts.

Making it back to the entrance, he had found the stairs he had seen earlier upon entering the house. As he took the first step, he realized the stairs had been destroyed and there wasn't any way to traverse them for the time being. Luckily for him however, such a little inconvenience for him was nothing he couldn't deal with. After all he was mage and he had a plethora of spells he could use in situations like this. Using a spell he had obtained by copying a lightning dragon slayer, he began to send mana to his feet and magnetized himself to the wall beside him that would lead up the stairs anyway. Walking alongside the walls, he eventually made it to the top to see a hallway leading down to three doors. One of them had been open and the other two had been shut.
He also saw a large Coyote in front of him, ramming its head into a door as if it were trying to get through. With the size of that beast, he figured it should have gotten in there pretty easily and it was obvious the door was giving way but something was clearly barricading it on the other side. Shichiro would then prepare to dispatch it. Meanwhile, Panther Lily had been accompanied by Keita in going down into the basement so he had just hopped onto Keita's shoulder and had him lead the way instead.

As Keita started walking down the stairs to the basement, he noticed that a lot of the stairs were creaking, but he could not see anything wrong in the general vicinity when he was walking. He started to smell the air, and it was just a dank and damp basement, filled with the scent of stagnant air, as if the door had not been opened for quite a while. Keita also noticed that it was getting a lot colder down here rapidly, and it seemed like some sort of magic was responsible for the sudden change in temperature. To be sure he had the right notion, he walked back up the stairs, and noticed it suddenly got warmer when he got past a certain step. He also noticed that there was a broken lock at the bottom of the stairs that seemed to have been ripped off by claws, and so Keita put his guard up as he entered deeper into the basement. He was sort of horrified at what he saw, as there were a massive amount of dead coyote bodies that seemed to have been hacked to pieces and put on hooks. No wonder the damned things were constantly attacking the farmstead, their families were here.

Shichiro had begun to engage the coyote in front of him by conjuring an arcane bolt in his hand, ready to fire. before he did however, he noticed the coyote had turned its attention towards him. Upon quick observation, he realized the coyote was foaming at the mouth as if it was suffering from some sort of illness. Rabies, he assumed. Well that would explain why they were so brazen all of a sudden. Now more than ever, did he have to do something about these vermin running around. Unfortunately, it seems his employers were nowhere to be found. The coyote had made a reckless charge at Shichiro to which Shichiro had just thrown the arcane bolt he had already conjured in hopes of killing it. The bolt had impacted the large creature and sent it on a one way trip to unlife. Letting out a sigh, he went over towards the corpse of the creature, conjuring another arcane bolt just in case. Of course as soon as he got within a meter of it the body would jump up once more and try to attack him again. Throwing the bolt at it again, he hit it again once more severing its head from its body this time around.

Keita was looking around the strange magical freezer that was full of meat, and some of the bodies of these coyotes were not even properly butchered before being what was essentially flash frozen and hung on the hooks. Some of the coyotes even still had terrible expressions of madness on their face which was indicative of rabies. This sort of meant that the farmers were eating magical beasts that were tainted with rabies, and they could no longer be trusted and would need to be apprehended the next time that they saw them. Keita saw nothing else of value in this room, and so he was going to turn around with the panther lily following him, when at the top of the stairs there were three hungry and deranged looking coyote beasts, two of them with seemingly fresh blood dripping from their mouths. Keita’s heart sunk into his stomach for a moment, hoping that his lemur was okay, and was almost sure he was, it was sensitive to danger and could fly. Still, these beasts needed to be dealt with, and so he used his earth magic to turn the stairs into slick mud, the coyotes falling down into a freshly made pit with spikes at the bottom.

Now that he knew the Coyote was down for good this time, he proceeded to walk down the hallway in order to find any potential survivors or remnants of the inhabitants of this farm. Walking down the hallway, he peered into the open room he had seen which seemed like a small bedroom. Nothing out of the ordinary was in there although it was messy. Continuing further down the hall, he found a bigger bedroom. This room was a lot messier than the last one but once again, he could tell it was done by human hands. And lastly, there was the door that the coyote was trying to get into. Shichiro had tried to open the door but it was locked. He tried to knock on the door to see if he'd get a response but there was no response. He then tried to speak to see if there was anything behind said door. Speaking fairly loudly, Shichiro asked if there was anybody behind the door and then introduced himself as a rune knight that was summoned here to take care of the beasts around him. Still no answer and so, Shichiro just shrugged and went back the way he came. As he started to walk, he heard the shifting of weight downstairs.

Keita had just made the coyote beasts slip down a mudslide all the way into a pit with some spikes in it, before he used his earth magic to close the hole up and revert the stairs. He listened for a moment, wondering if anything else was going to happen, before concluding that he could at least go upstairs, but he would first have a bit of a precaution and quickly summon a porcupine type creature out of the ground made of stone, and have it walk up the stairs. He then cautiously walked after it while the panther lily followed him, sniffing back and forth to get a smell for what was in the air, but shook its head when all it could smell was the fresh stench of blood. Keita thought that he might have to warn Shichiro that the farmers were constantly cutting up rabies-filled coyote magical beasts and eating them, which was bound to make them insane. He summoned a small stone tablet with the words written on it, and told it to scurry upstairs to find Shichiro, which would fill him in on the crazy farmers. Just as he did that, he saw a massive amount of eyes in the fields outside.

Walking back down the hallway, he figured he'd have to deal with whatever was in that barricaded room later. There was nothing out of the ordinary for him upstairs other than messy rooms and what not but he had already deduced that this was done by human hands and not by the creatures that currently infest this house. Making it back to the stairs, he simply just jumped from the top to the bottom as it was just more convenient for him than activating another spell. Making it to the bottom of the broken stairwell, he decided he would regroup with Keita and Panther Lily and share information of what they had found. Turning the corner back to the den, he had seen something odd that made him want to burst out laughing, despite the gruesome scene in front of him. A little tablet with legs was running towards him, jumping up and down in front of him. Attempting to stifle laughter, Shichiro picked up the tablet to read the contents of what it said. Afterwards, the tablet crumbled into dust and this made him hasten his step towards the basement of the house in order to confirm if what was written was true.

As Keita turned towards the front of the house to see the windows and the seemingly large field of enemies outside, suddenly he saw that Shichiro had come down the stairs and made his way towards him. Seeing that Shichiro was facing him and not the windows, Keita just had a fairly drawn out "Uhhh..." as he pointed towards the window of the house behind Shichiro. After Shichiro looked towards the window, panther lily had made its way out of the basement and headed back towards Shichiro's side, while Keita started thinking of a way to handle what looked to be at least forty or so large rat beasts. They had to fight rats again, it seemed almost inevitable at this point that he would end becoming sworn enemies with all of rat kind, but he just felt that it didn't have to be this way. He sighed, and then started to channel some of his magic, getting ready for a huge spell. "Alright Shichiro, are you ready for something cool I've been working on?" Keita would say to Shichiro as he gathered a lot of the ambient mana into himself to form his most powerful spell. This spell was going to be a summon spell that would most certainly help out against the rats.

Meeting up with his cousin Keita, he was about to ask him if he found anything of note downstairs. before he could speak however, he found that his cousin was stammering a bit and pointing elsewhere. This made Shichiro raise an eyebrow and turn in the direction his cousin was pointing in. Turning his head, he had looked through a window to see they weren't quite alone here. Hundreds of eyes had been trained on them at the moment and he could immediately tell what they were without even being able to see their full appearance. As he looked at them, Panther Lily had returned from the basement and hopped onto his right shoulder. Shortly afterwards, Shichiro pulled his hands out of his pockets to prepare for a fight. He wasn't sure if anybody else was still alive in the house just in case he had to cause some damage to the property itself but he wanted to at least make sure. In any case, Keita had begun to ask him something along the lines of 'if he wanted to see something' to which Shichiro just turned back to his direction, a bit puzzled. He wasn't sure what he was about to do but he figured if he had a plan, then he'd let him do his thing. "Sure," Shichiro responded with some uncertainty.

Keita was charging his mana for the spell and then immediately started using it, looking towards the field that all of the rats were rushing towards the house. A large amount of humanoid figures that looked like they were made of dry clay, the terracotta soldiers. The soldiers each had a spear in their hands and grew out of the ground rapidly, some of them stabbing into some of the rats, before they started fighting. The soldiers drew the attention of the rats, and the soldiers were stabbing them through with the spears, constantly fighting as if they were real soldiers that were in a group together, supporting each other. As they were massacring the rats, it seemed like the rats could not do any significant damage to the terracotta soldiers, but eventually some of them were getting gnawed into oblivion. The soldiers were going down, and due to the nature of his spell that he used, he decided to let them go down so that he could conserve mana. The ants were cut nearly in half already, and out of the sixteen soldiers that he had summoned, there were still around ten of them remaining, and so Shichiro should be able to finish them off.

Watching with great interest, Shichiro wondered what his cousin was up to when he asked that question. Training his eyes outside of the window they were looking at, Keita had casted a spell that seemingly made stone soldiers appear from the ground. They had spears and were beginning to slaughter the rats in front of them. Shichiro had thought to himself this was a pretty cool spell and he wouldn't mind being able to use it himself one day. For now, while they were in the midst of their skirmish, Shichiro had begun to inhale deeply while staring at the sight in front of him at the window. After a second or two after the soldiers had done their part to kill most of the rats, there had been around less than a dozen or so. Shichiro had punched the window in front of him, busting an opening through to before belching powerful flames in a cone towards the rats that were in the vicinity. Some of the soldiers that were there might have been caught in the flames but the main goal was to destroy the remaining rat force so they could pose less of a threat to the humans later. It was a bit unfortunate about the person they had found but nothing he could do about it.

Keita watched as his soldiers slaughtered the rats and were bitten into destruction, before suddenly he looked to his left as Shichiro broke open a window with his fist, an act that Keita would not dare to do at the moment unless he wanted a hand completely stabbed by a bunch of broken glass shards, and this was also the first time that Keita had actually seen how durable his cousin was from all the training and other life experiences. What happened next was even more surprising, as his cousin suddenly blew out a huge cone of flame, a move that Keita had seen him do plenty of times in the past, so it was not that jarring to him, but it was definitely not something he was ready for, as the cone of flame lit up almost the entirety of the outside of the house, meaning that the farmland was now on fire, and Keita did not have very many good solutions to actually put it out, and hoped that his cousin could do so after they had confirmed that the rat menace was gone. After the giant fire cone, Keita walked outside to assess the damage and look for any surviving rats.

Well, that was that then. This crisis was finally quelled. He didn't really like how things turned out but that's just the way things go. Looking out through the window, he saw nothing but fires and the sight of burning rats running around alive attempting to put themselves out. Watching to make sure none survived, Shichiro wondered if he should prepare another fire spell just in case. His worries were for naught as it seemed as all of the rats that were moving had now stopped as his flames started to put themselves out. Well, this wasn't what he expected to find upon coming here but it was what he got. Before he could proceed with the original mission, he'd have to return to the guild in order to inform them of what transpired here. With the clients nowhere in sight, they couldn't get the information of the den they were to clear out and so this mission was a wash. letting out a sigh, Shichiro placed his hands into his pockets and began to make his way to the exit of the house they were in. It would be a long walk back to the guild but a necessary one in order to inform them of the events of what happened here.
