Mikajia
It was time to deal with the tournament once again. As things were shifting to a lull in his life, he received a letter from an unknown source, requesting his assistance with defeating the current champion of the tournament. He honestly found it amazing at how often this happened. This time however, seemed to have nothing really to do with a personal vendetta or anything like that, it was more to do with bets. The champion was a woman that had claimed to be able to defeat Mikajia. This was nothing new to him, honestly, considering he had personally become the champion of this tournament several times now.

But he never stuck around to defend his title. As far as he was concerned, there were few contestants in that tournament that ever posed a true threat to him, so he figured there was no reason to stick around. Let them take the title and have their time in the sun. He preferred having a good challenge, over constantly crushing newbies. And unfortunately, only one contestant had ever actually made him have to go all out. Considering that, he never once felt like it would be worth the headache to stick around.

But this time seemed a bit different. Rarely did someone contact him to have him beat the champion simply for jewels, which actually surprised him quite a bit, considering the sizeable wagers made on the contestants. For whatever reason, the requests usually circled around revenge for someone’s loved one being killed by the champion. Though he didn’t really feel too much pity for the person, considering most knew exactly what they were getting in to when they stepped foot in the ring here. Hell, you were even forced to sign a waver stating you understood the potential risk of death.

Some would call him cold, and he wouldn’t entirely disagree, but that was his standpoint nonetheless. If you were given plenty of warning about the dangers surrounding something like a martial arts tournament, and still chose to participate, whatever outcome you had to endure was entirely on you. The people seeking vengeance for the untimely death of a loved one always wrote out these unbelievably long descriptions of just how amazing and wonderful and loving the person was, and why it was such a horrible thing they were gone. It was entirely unnecessary and wouldn’t change his willingness to do the job, for better or worse. He only wished he could tell these people this.

Unfortunately, he had no way of actually explaining that detailing their lost loved one’s entire history was completely pointless and time wasting. So Mikajia just got in the habit of ignoring all the bullshit and just reading the last parts of each letter, looking for the fighter’s name and description. He couldn’t describe how pleased he was with the fact that he never had to actually deal with any of these people in person. Based on the letters he received, he probably wouldn’t be able to stop himself from killing them.

From his experiences so far, any time he dealt with the tournament and finished his job, he was always paid by some kind of middle man. He didn’t know exactly why that was the case, but he wasn’t going to complain so long as he got his money. The moment they gave him any trouble, he would instantly hunt them down and put them through hell, only killing them after they began begging for death. Yes, he was rather sadistic, a piece of his nature that seemed to have exponentially increased after his Daemon blood had awoken.

Normally he would be completely dreading the thought of participating in this tournament, yet again. However, based on his last experience, and the fact that he finally found a decent competitor, he was actually slightly hopeful. Mikajia had been met with a competitor that had actually been very well trained, almost as well as Mikajia had been. He had quickly realized the strength of this competitor when the man had very nearly knocked him out with one hit. A thrill ran through his body when he realized he would actually have to use all of his strength and skill to best this opponent.

Eventually he stood as the victor of their exchange, forcing the man to yield to him. Normally Mikajia never bothered with such a method, normally just outright nocking them out, but he respected the man as a good fighter, and gave him a chance to submit without suffering any further injury. Regardless of how people looked on him as a person, and how he finished his jobs, no one could say he was an honorless fighter. He treated talented fighters with respect, and any time he killed, he always made it quick and painless. For all his sadistic nature, he never tortured his opponents or targets.

It didn’t matter what someone said, he had seen it for himself, time and time again. The supposed righteous leaders and protectors of the innocent. Claiming to be pillars of virtue and paragons of good. The skeletons many of them possessed in their closets made Mikajia look like a fucking angel. Despite him being a criminal in the public eye, and now having some innocent blood on his hands, the truth of the matter was, he was still more honorable than the filth that ran the country. And no matter how bad things got, he wouldn’t let that change.

Mikajia
He approached the tournament location, the Great Baska Rock, surveying the surroundings, seeing if he could locate any potential challengers that might pose a threat. Unfortunately, the majority only seemed marginally impressive. But at the very least, that was better than normal. Usually, when he first arrived, he felt like he was surrounded by nothing but amateurs and overly hopeful beginners. This time though, it seemed that at least most of them had received some basic training. There were even a few he spotted, that gave off the feeling of intermediate level martial artists.

They weren’t the best by any means, but just from the way they carried themselves, he could safely assume they possessed at least five to seven years of training in their discipline. It could easily take over ten years for a fighter to be considered advanced, and that was just at the starting level of advanced, there were still many more to go. Usually, the actual time required to reach these heights depended on the natural talent of the disciple, but there were other factors as well, one of them being the skill of the master as well, and their methods. However, most could safely reach the beginnings of those fabled ranks roughly ten years after starting on the path, if they kept up with their training, never faltering, never quitting, devoting themselves to their discipline every chance they got.

The road to mastery was a difficult one, but anyone that could stick to it without giving up, even when everything seemed hopeless; your training was pointless, like you felt nothing was working, but continued to press through anyways. Those were the people that would reach the fabled heights of mastery. And though of course, none of the people around him were of that level, Mikajia could tell these people were actually serious about their training. He was beginning to get excited.

Mikajia
He could only speculate as to why things had seemed to change so drastically since he last took part in this tournament. He certainly wasn’t a betting man, but if he did have to make a wager, he would say it was due to his last fight here. From the few rumors spreading around, his last fight had become something of a tall tale, a rumor of a “Legendary Warrior”; a man that bested everyone in his path, then defeating the most talented fighter the tournament had ever seen. Then simply walking away from the fame and fortune. When he had heard these particular rumors, he had almost been too embarrassed to show his face. He had confidence in his skills yes, but he sure as hell was no freakin’ ‘Legendary Warrior’.

In that moment, he wanted nothing more than to find the morons that started that bullshit rumor and kill them. He was also seriously wishing he had some kind of mask or something to hide his face. The last thing he wanted was to deal with the complete bullshit that was fame. He was perfectly fine with gaining the infamy associated with a powerful dark mage that always completed his jobs quickly and efficiently. But this shit was something else entirely, and it would only serve to get in his way later on, no doubt about that.

He absolutely refused to allow people to see his face, there was no way in hell he was going to deal with that farce. So before his first fight started, Mikajia tracked down one of the other fighters that had just lost, knocked them out, and ripped the man’s shirt off. He tore the shirt apart before wrapping it securely around his head, leaving only his eyes visible on his face.

He wrinkled his nose slightly at the repulsive smell from the man’s shirt, ’Fucking hell, does this man know nothing of bathing?’ He thought as he quickly exhaled through his nose. He tried breathing in through his mouth, but that ended up being worse. His eyes bulged and he choked some, ”Oh god, it’s like I can taste it…” He said, before running behind some of the bleachers and ripped his makeshift mask off, nearly vomiting in the process. His eyes were wide as he gasped and heaved for air. He looked at the foul shirt with absolute disgust before tossing it aside.

’Never mind. I’ll use my own.’ He thought before removing his coat, then his shirt, exposing his bare chest. He then sighed forlornly as he ripped up his own shirt. He hated destroying his own clothes, but almost anything would be preferable to the odor that other man’s shirt was giving off. It should almost be a crime to smell that bad. It was like he had just dunked his head straight into a cesspool. With his face covered in a shirt that didn’t wreak of rotting corpses, covered in feces and left to bask in the desert sun for weeks, he draped his coat over his side before making his way up towards the ring for his first fight.

A couple people in the stands whistled as he approached the ring, a few making some lewd remarks or gestures. He ignored them all. He wasn’t the type to usually flaunt his body by any means. He was in good shape yes, but nothing at all like even some of the other fighters in this tournament. He draped his coat over a chair near the ring, before finally entering the ring. Some people continued to make comments, some aimed at him, others at the obviously make-shift mask he had on, telling him to ‘show your face’, ‘don’t be a coward’, ‘aw, you shy’ and so on.

Mikajia
The world around him was shut out as he focused entirely on the opponent across from him. It was a woman. The way she carried herself made it obvious she was very skilled. But he was still better. However, he knew better than to treat her as a beginner. He had more skill and training behind his belt, but Mikajia had lost count of the number of opponents he’d beaten that were technically more skilled than he had been. Overconfidence was one of the worst possible traits a fighter could possess, and frequently was the cause of their defeat or death at the hands of supposed ‘lesser’ fighters.

As the fight began, she darted straight for him, stopping just short of hitting him then attempting a feint. It was off to a start at break-neck speed. Her strikes and blows were powerful and somewhat refined. She possessed excellent control, speed and grace. Mikajia had no doubt this woman would make it to master level in time. The two of them spun and flipped through the ring like a couple of expert acrobats. Their blows quick and heavy, each one making the floor of the ring vibrate slightly. Neither could stop the grins from appearing on their faces, the looks of people thrilled to face a real challenge.

Both he and his opponent made only very simple mistakes, but hers was only slightly worse than his. She misjudged the speed of his final blow, moving to block just a fraction of a second sooner than she should have. That gave him the time he needed to grab her arm, twist it around and use her mass against her, throwing her over his shoulder and slamming into the ground, knocking the wind out of her. Mikajia quickly moved to place her in a joint lock before she could regain her senses, then squeezed as he brought his hand, formed into a spear, at a stop just before her throat, ”Yield.” He said, as they both breathed heavily.

She closed her eyes and sighed before submitting and admitting defeat. Mikajia let go of her wrist before helping her to her feet. The two shook hands before giving a respectful bow to each other, then left the ring. Mikajia massaged his neck a bit, then rotated his shoulders, trying to remove some of the soreness. That woman had been one of his toughest challenges yet. There was no way in hell he would kill such a worthy opponent, not when she could end up getting stronger and giving him an even better fight in the future. The two locked eyes once more and grinned, nodding their heads to each other before she finally left.

Mikajia had to wonder though, considering how strong she had been, and everyone was in agreement that he asked, the current champion was definitely way stronger, then Mikajia now couldn’t stop wondering just who the hell this woman was that was the current champion? Yes, Mikajia had just won against his opponent, but she really hadn’t been all that much weaker than Mikajia had. It was also true however, that neither of them were using their magic. In fact, though most of the contestants could use magic, from what he had witnessed, very few actually did. It had seemed to become something of an unspoken rule that no one use their magic unless both contestants agreed to.

Knowing that, Mikajia couldn’t help but wonder, if she had used her magic, would she have actually won? Well, yes, it was possible. But, then again, if he landed his strongest spell, odds are she wouldn’t have stood a chance. But it was pointless to ponder what-ifs, and he simply shrugged it off. Maybe next time he would get the chance to actually fight her while going all out.
