Kenzo walked through the streets that had long since been overrun by moss. It had been a long time since the last time the swordsman had visited the city, and it looked as run down and un-cared for as ever. Truth be told, he didn’t find it specially appealing either, so the fact that he’d returned to Orchidia after such a long time meant only one thing. Business. You see, the last time Kenzo was in the city, he’d become acquainted with a local inspector. From what he recalled, Orchidia had a fascination with these kinds of people for some reason. Everyone wanted to be a detective or a renown inspector. Unfortunately, all of these pretenders were nothing more than that. Pretenders. Expect for a single individual. After taking several jobs from the now defunct Rune Knights, Kenzo met Inspector Nilan at last. Contrary to the rest of posers he’d met so far, the once before Rune Knight captain possessed some serious talent. Given the Muramasa family’s lack of interest in the everyday dealings of their territory in Orchidia City, it would be an understatement to say that the only reason some semblance of law and order remained was due to the Inspector’s efforts. For that reason, Kenzo couldn’t refuse when he received a letter from such a man. Specially considering that he was very close to the place.

After meeting with Nilan, Kenzo was sent out by three ex Rune Knights. After the government organization disbanded, Nilan had rounded them all up to create a sort of police corps. According to him, there had been several incidents of murders at night. However, the serial killer was a talented individual and he never left any clues behind. As such, Nilan decided to hire the help of adventurers to aid him.

Kenzo decided to heed the call of his friend. After all, they’d shared plenty of drinks back when the warrior was still new to the country. Much of his knowledge of Fiore he owed to Nilan, and his disposition for heavy talking when drinking. After he was given a resume in the state of things, Kenzo accompanied the Rune Knights to the crime scene. Apparently, the serial killer had claimed his or her 5th victim the previous night. Surprisingly, Nilan had no clues that could lead to his capture, so the man must have been seriously skilled. After being introduced to his three rune knight escorts, Kenzo walked to the crime scene. Apparently, the killer had made a killing last night, (I know, horrible pun), considering he hadn’t just committed one murder, but two. The Rune Knights that Kenzo was assigned with were some of the higher-ranking individuals that were tasked with supervising security around the areas where the murders happened.

When he met them, Kenzo felt something odd about them. He couldn’t quite place his finger on what it was, but for some reason he felt like they couldn’t be trusted. With this gut feeling, the warrior let the rune knights show him around the crime scenes. Both of them were exactly shared the same characteristics. The victims were young women, around their mid-twenties, one 24 and the other 27. Blond. According to witnesses that had been with them the previous nights, they had decided to return home alone after the party ended. Their homes were a couple of blocks away from the bar, so the way was considered pretty safe. However, the police corps were unable to find any traces of evidence. Coincidently, the killings had allegedly taken place at the exact time when patrols were not around.

The timing was just too perfect. After Kenzo received all the information from the three rune knights escorting him, they let him check around the scene as he wished. The male decided to scout the area with his eye’s ability, trying to see if he could find something that had been hidden or thrown away in the nearby alleys. However, there was indeed nothing. Both victims had died of strangulation by rope. The person that did the crimes was definitely skilled. As the three rune knights left the crime scene, Kenzo decided to trail the three of them. He couldn’t help but feel a strange hunch out of the rune knights. After all, the mercenary was someone that had seen multiple killers in his life, and there was something they all shared in common. Different from the rest of people in the world, people that knew what taking another life was like had a slightly different shine in their eyes. Out of the three of the Rune Knights, one of them definitely fit the bill.

Still, Kenzo didn’t blame the poor guy out of the blue. After all, there were several reasons as to why someone was pushed to those extremes. Heck, he was not someone to judge people on that, being guilty of it himself. Truth be told, the blue haired swordsman had long since crossed the line when he lost count of the amount of people that had fallen to his blade. For that reason, he had decided to atone if at least a little for his sins. If he were able to stop even as much as another single person from dying, he’d make sure to do everything he could. With that in mind, the male decided to trail the suspicious rune knight undetected for the moment.

Jumping to the roof of the nearest building, the mercenary kept a safe distance from the knight. Thanks to the large vegetation that seemed to have swallowed whole the entire city, it was quite easy to hide at the top of buildings. Multiple trees and vines had overgrown their initial locations and climbed up the walls of buildings, casting shades and different shapes at the cusps. Even if looking down from the top of a building was equally as hard as looking to the top from street level, Kenzo didn’t necessarily need a clear line of sight after all. He could just keep a safe distance away from the ground’s line of sight and still see each and every moment the suspect did.

For the most part, the rune knight did nothing out of the ordinary. Walking around the streets, supervising the patrol shifts, saying hello to passer byes and people he knew. The usual Kenzo expected. However, there was something that instantly caught the mercenary’s attention. From what he’d seen so far, the male had a wedding ring in his annular finger, meaning that he was married to someone. Yet, when a blonde, young looking girl passed next to the rune knight, he couldn’t help but turn his head around to check her out. Even if for just a moment, Kenzo could notice a sinister grin forming in the man’s lips, tracing them with his tongue ever so slightly. After that, he continued walking as if nothing had happened. The warrior’s heartbeat started increasing, as he felt the dots started connecting little by little. If he had some suspicions before, he was almost certain by now. Kenzo knew he couldn’t lift his eyes away from the rune knight, lest he decided to kill the woman he had just seen.

Apart from that scene, the suspicious rune knight did nothing out of the ordinary for the rest of the day. Most of it was work related, moving around and asking for reports from rune knights and other law enforcement people. Eventually, night fell and with it, the married knight went back home to his wife and family. Throughout the day, Kenzo had remained a safe distance away from him, making sure he was still unnoticed. As night started to seep in, Orchidia’s streets fell silent. The warrior had found a comfortable place to continue surveilling the building, waiting to see if anything else suspicious was going to happen. From there, he could see the whole family dynamic. The man was married, with two boys. As soon as he got inside the house, there was no one to receive him, just two dogs which he kicked in annoyance. As he got closer to the kitchen his wife scolded him for getting late once again, both of his children played by the couch with their newest generation lacrima phones, ignoring their dad completely.

Throwing a fit, the male demanded dinner from his wife. Angered by the treatment of the dogs, the wife began scolding the rune knight. That’s when a fight between the two of them broke out, escalating to the point of involving the kids. Things flew through the air, breaking expensive looking dishes and other cutlery. In the end, he was sent to the sofa in the living room, while his wife drank herself to sleep with a bottle of wine in her hand. The story was something Kenzo had heard much about before. It was the typical middle-class family that lived in Orchidia. However, there was a single detail that was of supreme importance. The man’s wife was blonde.

Once the lights of the house were out, Kenzo’s alertness level was kicked up a notch. If the suspect was doing something, it was definitely going to be in the cover of night. If he could say so himself, even the fight with his wife was a good ruse, giving him a solid alibi and a way to escape easier from the building undetected. However, after a couple of hours, there was nothing. Not a single movement was seen from the sleeping agent. For a moment, Kenzo tried to think if he had been caught, rekindling all of his steps that day. To be quite honest, he thought it to be virtually impossible, considering he’d gone to great lengths to hide his own identity and remain far from a clear line of sight from the ground. Yet, here he was, waiting for a sleeping man to do something. As he kicked back and tried to get a more comfortable position, the male grabbed his head with both of his hands. Throwing it back, he was now able to see the stars. Truth be told, Orchidia was a hideous place in the eyes of the warrior, but the sight of the night was one that he couldn’t compare to any other place in the country. Was this perhaps the power of nature? After all, this was the most nature-claimed city in Fiore. Maybe it actually had something to do. Who knew?

As all of these thoughts crossed through his head, a familiar flying lemur landed on the ground next to him. ”Been a while since I last saw you eh Kin?” Kenzo greeted his companion with a smile. For a while now, Kin had remained at Myras City, serving as a way to communicate with Alisa in case anything came up.

However, once he had decided to travel to Orchidia, he called for him. Kenzo needed the means to communicate quickly with Inspector Nilan in case something happened. How convenient it would have been to have some sort of instant communication device right? Sadly, such a convenient thing did not exist, so he had to make with was due. As he unwrapped the message strapped to Kin’s leg, his head instantly turned at the house he was supposed to be guarding.

The man was still sleeping in the living room, from what he could tell. However, he wasn’t so sure now. Jumping at the house’s roof as carefully as he could all of the place came into his eye’s viewing range. ”Crap!” Kenzo had been fooled. The sleeping rune knight was nothing more than a bunch of pillows inside the sheets. There was no way the guy was getting away with tricking the merc. After a quick search, he was able to find him. He had just committed his last murder, the blonde woman he had checked out earlier that day. Full of rage, Kenzo grabbed the culprit’s fist coming at his way. He was certainly strong, but Kenzo was leagues beyond. With a single punch he was knocked out cold, near the brink of death.

Quickly enough, Nilan came and arrested the man. It was obvious the look of disappointed that he held in his face when he arrested his colleague. Using his connections in the law enforcement unit had allowed him to remain unpunished and act undetected. Once the warrior was paid, and everyone was happy. Except for the blue haired Bellan. He wasn’t able to save another life after all. If only he hadn’t been tricked by the stupid plan, that blonde haired woman would still be alive. But I guess that’s just the way of life, right?
