Nuala had received a letter. It had been left for her at the guild and brought to her chambers by one of the staff members. Needless to say, the Voidling was surprised to find that someone had not only found out about her whereabouts, but gone as far as to write her. The surprise was even bigger when she spotted out that the envelope had been stamped with Savannah’s flag – the country that was her homeland. Nuala had no living relatives, at least not from what she knew. Truth be told, she was quite old compared to most humans and whatever family she once possessed must have passed away during her time in the void.

But it seemed as though she was wrong.

The letter held her name on it and was addressed to the Daeva Eye guild hall. Other than that and the stamp, she couldn’t spot any valuable information. There was no name of the person who had sent this letter to her on it and even though it seemed silly, Nuala hesitated before opening it. She wasn’t sure how to feel about this and while her last name wasn’t a secret, it also wasn’t something she spoke much about. Because of who she was and the power and status she held, Nuala didn’t need a last name to identify herself and it only reminded her of the family she no longer had.

With the envelope in her hands, the woman walked across the room and onto the balcony. It was night time already and the world had fallen quiet. It was a cloudless, beautiful sky and she decided to take a seat onto one of the couches while having a little drink. Nuala usually wasn’t much into alcohol, but the occasion seemed fitting and thus she poured herself a glass of rum before sitting down and staring at the still unopened letter.

After staring at the unopened letter for a while and enjoying the warm spring breeze on her balcony, Nuala took another sip from her drink. She had never thought about her past much, simply because everything had happened so long ago; the woman was barely remembering the faces of her parents and her friends when she came out of the void and once she reemerged, everything she knew had already disappeared. Dead and gone, she supposed. She had never bothered to look for them after she returned to the face of earth and truth be told, Nuala hadn’t exactly been in the best state of mind anyways.

Decades had passed since then and so many years had gone into the land that she had completely put aside those memories and focused on the life she currently had – and all the people in it. But this wasn’t something she could run from forever, she supposed, and so Nuala opened the envelope. The letter was entirely written in her mother tongue and of course she had no trouble reading it. The content was equally surprising as it was disturbing and unexpected – apparently this was about an inheritance. Nuala couldn’t think of a single thing that she could possibly inherit.

Her parents had been farmers and while they weren’t poor, the land they lived on was equal to no man’s land and once she had returned from the void, almost forty years later, the farm alongside every trace of her parents had disappeared. She couldn’t recall ever owning much money or any valuables and even if that was the case – another twenty years had gone by since her return and she had never heard a single thing about it. Why now? Nuala couldn’t help but to mistrust the entire situation.

Luckily the sender of the letter had left some instructions for Nuala on a second page. Apparently the inheritance she was supposed to receive had to be picked up on an island that was quite far from her current location, but could be accessed through a ferry. Nuala recognized the island’s name and suddenly began to doubt that it had anything to do with her family. After Nuala had emerged from the void, she had spent a few years in isolation in order to hone her social and physical skills before joining the military in Savannah. There, she had made some friends and made many people.

It was during that time that Nuala had met a man who would end up becoming incredibly important to her and her cause and they would spend many years together before his passing. She had learned a lot from him about combat, about fighting, about survival – but also about society and how to act around people in order to get you way. Unfortunately his life had been taken to soon and as much as it had hurt her, she had to move on. That was years ago, however, and Nuala hadn’t heard from said man or his companions in a long time. The island she was supposed to travel to used to be a former place of operations for them.

It was home to many old tombs and temples and often they would travel there to explore the place and hunt for precious items. Their hunt wasn’t always successful, but every now and then they were able to pick up certain items that would sell for a lot on the market. It was what allowed them to survive in first place. Nuala had never thought about whether or not that man had left anything for her after his death.

It wasn’t like him to do something like that either. Especially not after so many years after his death. Nuala did remember him being sceptical about her longevity however and she was able to recall a distant memory of them joking about whether or not she was truly able to live forever. Said memory made the Voidling halt for a moment and set the glass of rum she had been gleefully sipping on down.

If you can actually outlive me by at least ten years, I will give you something for it. Something that will make you even more special than you already are.

Nuala’s eyes widened as her mind recalled his familiar voice, saying those exact words to her while they sat over a bonfire alongside their comrades. It was a long time ago and she had never thought much about it since then, if at all, but suddenly it was all coming back to her. Was this the truth? Could this be it? Had he actually left something for her to pick up so many years after his demise. In hindsight, it probably wouldn’t be surprising considering the type of person he had been, but Nuala found it hard to believe anyways.

The night was still young however and so the Voidling decided to get wasted by herself, before getting some rest. She finished her glass of rum and then another one before finally climbing into bed and getting some rest. When the next morning came, the first thing she could think about was the damn letter and the mysterious inheritance that had been left for her from ghosts of her pasts. In the end it didn’t take long for Nuala to make a decision. She visited Kaiser at her office and informed her that she would be going on a little travel for a few days to see what this was all about.

When Nuala was getting ready to leave she decided to pack lightly. She didn’t plan on staying on the island for very long and hopefully this whole ordeal wouldn’t take longer than necessary. At the same time she had to make sure her guild mates knew where she was, in case this was all a trap set by one of her former clients in order to get revenge on her for something she did. Nuala was a careful and perceptive person, so she decided to sleep with one eye open while she was on this trip.

Nuala rode a horse to the border, where she had to search and ask around to find a ferry that would actually take her to where she wanted to go. The island’s name was relatively unknown, since it was small and didn’t officially belong to any of the bordering countries. Once she found a boat that would take her, against a fee of course, Nuala boarded the boat and took a seat on top of the deck to watch the ocean. It was a beautiful day, perfect for a boat trip really and after a few hours of traveling and staring out at the sea, they arrived at the harbour of the island.

Much to her surprise, it was very similar to how she remembered it. Clearly not much had changed. The weather had always been mild here; a bit hotter than in Fiore, but not as hot as Savannah. The forests were reminiscent of rain forests and most of the tombs and temples were built on top of smaller mountains or deep inside the woodlands with complicated underground passages that led to all sorts of places. Very few people lived on the island and those that did lived a simple lifestyle. They were farmers, fishermen and the likes and once every two weeks or so they received shipment from the mainland.

Once Nuala arrived at the island, she wasn’t quite sure how to react and what to do. There were so few people here and it’s been such a long time since she had last visited this place – even if there had been someone she had known from all those years ago, chances were they weren’t around or alive anymore. It’s a good thing that the clever thief had packed lightly and since the weather was decent, she decided to go for a little walk around town. There were very few shops, but it seemed that those which were present were tended to with love and care by the island’s citizens.

She spotted a cute little bakery and decided to have a look at the different snacks and pastries they offered. After living in Dahlia City for such a long time, Nuala had gotten used to not being stared at anymore and almost felt normal – it was only now that she realized that her strange facial tattoos still freaked some people out. The little lady behind the bakery’s counter looked at her with wide eyes and stopped everything in her track. She was petite, way smaller than Nuala herself, and had a kind, albeit spooked, expression.

“I’m from Fiore,” the woman introduced herself and it seemed as though her words lightened up the mood almost immediately. The shop owner swiftly nodded and continued her work. “Oh, yes. Of course! It’s just that we don’t get visitors very often – especially the mages of the neighbouring countries seem to have on interest in our little island and perhaps it is better that way!” She gave it a shrug and a chuckle and Nuala continued to look around. She had her eyes on a particularly delicious looking chocolate croissant and as soon as the little lady noticed, she packed one up for her.

Nuala thanked her and threw a few coins over the counter. “I’m actually only here because I have received a letter,” she began explaining and took a seat on a nearby table so she could eat her chocolate croissant. The store clerk perked up. “A letter? Some official business?” She didn’t even bother to hide the fact that she was curious, but Nuala didn’t mind that at all. She liked people who were honest and upfront about their feelings and thoughts. “Some sorts of. I was told that I have inherited something and I am supposed to pick it up from here. Do you, by any chance, know where I could pick something such as an inheritance up?”

The croissant was delicious by the way, and as Nuala was munching away the store clerk came over and put a cup of coffee on her table as well. “I do actually. There is really only one place for you to go: the Mayor’s office! They do be handling all sorts of stuff! I’m sure you will learn more there.” Nuala nodded. While eating her croissant and sipping on her cup of coffee, the Voidling pulled out the letter again and looked over it one more time. The store clerk, curious as ever, had scooted a little closer and was now looking over her shoulder. “Yes, most certainly the Mayor’s office! It’s down the street, a big house that you can’t possibly miss!” Nuala thanked her once again and continued eating her meal. The pastries and even the coffee were delicious and she had no doubt that the people here grew their own ingredients. The island climate was rather beneficial for farmers, which is why people had decided to settle down here in first place. Once Nuala finished up her meal, she got up and waved the clerk goodbye before leaving the store.

Nuala returned to the streets and began walking into the direction in which she had been pointed at by the nice lady from the bakery. It was just like she had said and the mayor’s office truly wasn’t difficult to find. It was probably the largest building on the island and as Nuala approached she found that while some people were staring at her, most of them almost immediately went back to minding their own business. Island folks were quite peculiar after all. The mayor’s office was open when she arrived and Nuala walked up to the counter where the secretary was sitting. “How may I assist you today, ma’am?” She said to Nuala and looked up at the Voidling.

She was a relatively young woman with black hair and bright green eyes. Her skin was slightly tan from all the sunlight that shone onto this island and Nuala could tell by the look on her face, that she immediately recognized and registered her as a foreigner. “You’re not from here I take it?” Nuala shook her head. “I’m from Savannah, currently residing in Fiore. I received a letter to come and pick up an inheritance from here – perhaps you could assist me with that?” Nuala pulled out the letter and slid it over the table. The assistant picked it up, opened it and began reading.

It was quiet for some time and every now and then the assistant was nodding while reading the letter and checking something in her notes. It was only at the very end of it, while she looked up something in her lacrima computer, that she seemed to hesitate. Very slowly, the put down the letter and looked up at Nuala. “I think I found what you were looking for, ma’am. The inheritance is one of the older ones that we have lying around.. A few decades to be exact.” She gave Nuala a long look.

Nuala knew in this very moment that the secretary was questioning the Voidling’s age. Nuala looked fairly young – not a day over 20 to be exact – and the fact that she was actually almost eighty years old was hard to understand for many. Nuala merely nodded at the secretary. “Would you get it for me? I’m eager to see what it is.” The woman slowly got up from her chair and fiddled out a key. “Yes, please wait here.” And with that, she was gone. Nuala waited for no longer than 10 minutes before the mayor’s secretary returned with a little box in her hand. It was all dusty and clearly had been standing around for many decades.

Nuala eyed the box and as the woman was sliding it across the table, she hesitated for a bit before taking it. It wasn’t a large box at all – a little smaller than a shoe box and upon lifting it up Nuala noticed that it was fairly light as well. “There’s one last note and request that I need you to consider before taking the box with you,” the secretary said and held up a small piece of paper. “It was asked that you do not open the box while still on the island. So please do take it home with you before checking what's inside.” Nuala frowned but then nodded. “I guess I’ll do that. Thanks for helping.” With that being said and done, the Voidling took the box and left the mayor’s office.

She had a difficult time containing her curiosity, but decided to respect the wishes of the secretary and the person who had left this inheritance for her. She already had some suspicions as to what could be inside as well. Back in the day they would often raid through tombs together to obtain and sell magical artifacts. If this was in fact one of them it must have been a very special one.

Nuala returned to the harbour where she waited for another ship to arrive that would take her back to Fiore. This took her indeed a few hours, since the ship came only once a day, but when it was there she boarded it with the box in her hands and returned to the country. Back in Fiore at last, the Voidling left the ship and walked up to where her horse was located before riding all the way back to the Daeva Eye guild hall. It was quite a long travel and even though she was curious, she did consider taking a break first.

But in the end her curiosity overcame her. Once Nuala arrived at the guild, she quickly returned her horse to the stables and walked up to her room. It was quiet inside the building building and most members were either asleep or simply not in town. Nuala quickly returned to her room and closed the doors. Once she arrived she put the box onto her bed and went into her bathroom to take a shower and get ready for the night. Finally dressed in her nightgown, Nuala jumped onto her bed and crossed her legs. The box sat in front of her.

She didn’t know why she was hesitant at all, but when she opened it she could only stare at what was inside. A small, but beautiful gem that glowed in a purple hue and emited what could only be described as intense, mythical magical energy. There was a little note to it that read ‘let this be your light during your darkest days’ and now it was up to Nuala to figure out what this little gem was capable of and how to utilize it. It was without a doubt a magical artifact – a relic so to speak – with some sort of enhanced properties. But this would most likely take some time and Nuala didn’t mind that. The Voidling could be very patient after all.

[THE END]
