Daisuke sat alone in the darkness of the meeting room in the Rune Knights headquarters with hands clasped. He was deep in thought, blankly staring out in the darkness. A few hours ago, the Captain Commander had called another meeting to deal with the cult-like group that has been menacing the area from the shadows as of late. Daisuke, still feeling responsible for the failure of the last raid, immediately jumped at the notice. To him, this was an opportunity to right the wrong. To him, he should have been able to stop it. He should have been quick enough to stop it. As he sits, he could still hear the wails of pain from the families when he informed them of the news of their loved one’s passing. The look of shock and sadness on their faces as their bodies visibly reacted to the news. Some dropped to their knees, others looked as if the color was drained from their faces.

None of them blamed Daisuke for what happened, all knowing that it was unfortunately what came with the job. Daisuke, however, wished that they would have. He felt that he deserved it. His day off, unfortunately, wasn’t as relaxing as he would have hoped and his subsequent conversation with his father did not alleviate his guilt. The only thing he could do, the only thing he felt like he had to do, was bring the group down at all costs. It was the only way he felt like he could honor those who passed. Suddenly, the lights in the room flicker on as Daisuke sees a familiar figure standing in the doorway. “I wish I could say that I am surprised to find you here.” Darius says as he sighs. He tosses Daisuke a bottle of water as he fully enters the room and sits beside his comrade. “Thanks.” Daisuke says as he takes a swig of the cold liquid.

The two sit in silence, Daisuke still blankly staring at the space in front of him while Darius has his eyes closed. After a long pause, Darius speaks. “You already know my stance on the situation so I’m not going to try and lecture you on it. I’ll say this once more and leave it at that: Their deaths are not on your hands. Those bastards we’re after are the only ones to blame. The other captains would not want you to sit here and wallow in self-pity. Let’s do what we can and honor their sacrifice by putting them in the dungeon where they belong.” Daisuke remains silent, taking yet another swig of the water bottle before putting it down. He takes a deep breath and composes himself before extending his fist towards Darius. The Desiertian notices this and bumps his fist against his. “Thanks, I needed that.” Daisuke says after a long pause.

“Anytime. Besides, I don’t want any excuses when I beat more of them than you during the next raid.” “Fuck you.” Daisuke says laughingly as he playfully pushes his friend aside. As the two have a more relaxed conversation, other captains begin to file in. As soon as the Captain Commander enters the room, all conversations cease. The Captain Commander has a weary expression on his face as he takes his position at the head. “As you all know, we recently participated in a raid of this cult-like group that has been making waves throughout Era. Unfortunately, two of our fellow Captains lost their lives in the skirmish. Today, we are presented with the opportunity to avenge them and bring their killers to justice. Our espionage division has ascertained the location of their stronghold. They’ve hidden themselves in the mountains near the outskirts of Era. Per that surveillance information, there are about two hundred strong inside. This will be an all hands on deck mission that I will be accompanying you on. As I mentioned, we will bring these murderers to justice.”

The Rune Knights marched, near one hundred members from Pages to Captains, flanking the red-armored Captain Commander. As they entered the mountainous area, they split off to their intended targets. They all remained in constant communication, each of them aware of the tragedy from before and solemnly swearing to not let it happen again. Daisuke walked not far from the Captain Commander, Galantine already drawn and alight with flames. Merry was with him, perched up atop his master’s shoulders. His presence was suggested by his father, likely to keep Daisuke in check. His eyes were locked onto the black fortress he saw in front of him. The heat his sword generated made things uncomfortable for those around him but they chose to ignore it as they knew the heat represented Daisuke’s anger. The group stops as they see individuals begin to flood out of the fortress, knowing that the battle that lay before them. “Knights! Bring these cretins to justice!” The Captain Commander decrees as he points towards the fortress.

Daisuke lets out a battle cry as he charges forward, the rest of the knights flanking him. He quickly trails his free hand over Galantine’s blade as he unleashes a wave of flames upon the approaching mages. Yells of pain fill the air as Daisuke moves forward, taking careful consideration to lower the temperature of the flames to detain the mages and not incinerate them. Their cries are soon filled with the sounds of battle, as weapons clash and magic whizzes throughout the air. As Daisuke knocks down a couple more mages, he quickly finds himself in a sword clash with an amber-haired man. The darkened blade he held was alight with blue flames, almost as if it were a dark mirror to Galantine. “If it isn’t the fabled Daisuke Sato. I’ve heard quite a lot about you. They speak highly of you and that legendary sword of yours. I think otherwise. I say that my sword is better than yours and I know that I’m better than you.” The man breaks their stalemate and attempts to charge towards Daisuke but swiftly receives a heavy blow from the handle of Daisuke’s blade. As he begins to fall towards the ground, losing consciousness as he does, he sees the now shattered pieces of his sword fall to the ground with him.

“Pathetic.” Daisuke says as he moves towards another group. A few minutes passed and the fighting ceased, all hostile individuals were detained and cuffed. “Excellent work.” The Captain Commander says, finally flashing a semblance of a smile. The mood improved as they combed the fortress clearing out any and all resistance they could find. As the final mage was escorted out, Daisuke watched intently. He felt that there was something off. There was no way that the individual that murdered those men was here. “You noticed it too, huh?” Darius says as he comes up beside Daisuke. He sported a fresh scar on the side of his cheek, something that Daisuke noticed but chose not to say anything about. “The one who did this isn’t here. It’s likely that they never were here. I’m glad we got these criminals locked up but the job feels half finished. Something is off.”

As the two men conversed, a tingling sensation spread across Merry’s body. His body trembled before he quickly tugged on Daisuke’s hair. “What’s wrong Merry?” Daisuke says as Merry points ahead. Off in the distance, the two men see a winged humanoid figure off in the distance, standing atop the Era Dungeon in the distance. “Uh...sir?” Merry says as he leaps down. Daisuke and Darius look down towards the blue creature and see a message written in blood in the grass, the same MO of the one who murdered the captains that day. ‘This way Mr. Sato’ The message said with an arrow pointing in the direction of the figure. The two look back in that direction and see that the figure has now vanished. “Well…fuck.” Darius says. “It’s them. Whoever that is is the one who killed them. They are the ones I need to stop." Darius sighs as he rubs his brow.

“Seems like this is personal now. I can’t stop you and I know you’ll do what you can to prevent me from going with you. All I ask is that you take Merry with you. Little guy can take care of himself.” “And what about you?” Daisuke says with an eerie calmness to his voice. “They’ll eventually find out. I’ll stall them as long as I can until you finish up. Just get it done. I’d rather not deal with your sister if something happened to you.” Upon finishing, Darius extends his fist as Daisuke bumps it with his own, thanking his friend. “You ready?” Daisuke says to Merry who jumps back atop Daisuke’s shoulders. “Aye sir!” He says as Daisuke races towards the Era Dungeon. The figure from before, a man dressed in black, descends upon the top of the Dungeon where Daisuke fought the wyvern as his wings recede when he lands. “He’s coming…” he says darkly.
