It was only a matter of time before Bishop Santos encountered more opposition to the church’s stranglehold over Dahlia. Nadine wasn’t surprised at all to have been given another request before she could leave town. Killing a family of dissenters wasn’t enough to silence the unrest, if anything it would only fan the flames. It was a different priest from the last time that issued the mission to the demi-human. This time they had waited for her to leave the Warmwool Inn at night, and had followed her a short distance before approaching the woman. Nadine’s ability to read auras didn’t improve her opinion of the church as she stared at the representative before nodding.

“You really should get your warriors of god to do these kinds of things, but I suppose the inquisition already has its hands full.” The woman folded the letter before pocketing it. “Is Bishop Santos sure he wants these two dealt this way?”

“Hmm. Well, a proper trial and burning would have been preferable, yes. However…” The priest stroked his bearded chin in thought. “Resources are running low, as is time. It’s more important that these problems be taken care of as quickly as possible.”

“Time?” Nadine echoed the word inquisitively, curious what the man had meant. The priest only glared at her though, so she glared back before continuing on. “These problems, or rather, these people, will be taken care of. I’ll be back at the church before morning, like last time.”

Fliers for the church had been posted on the walls of the local community center earlier in the day. To help bait out the vandals there were quite a few of the papers taped up in an obnoxious manner, too. Nadine watched over the area from an alley across the street. As usual there were very few people out and about. Some had stopped to stare at the fliers, but no one tried to take them down. Observing each and every one of the strangers made Nadine wonder just how many people did Bishop Santos have under his sway.

Reading all the auras she saw it seemed that most people here just wanted to be left alone and live out as pleasant of a life as they could manage. Nadine’s eyes stared off into the distance of her memories as she thought back to the family she had murdered for Bishop Santos. She had never killed a child before that night, and she knew there was no justifying the act. Neither of the kids had really deserved it, and she knew that with her special sight. Focusing her eyes back onto reality in front of her the woman shook her head. Dahlia really was a cruel place, even without Nadine adding to the tragedy.

Eventually two people did approach the fliers and began to tear them down. Their hoodies offered no protection to Nadine’s prying eyes, and she remained still within the darkness as she contemplated the information given to her. These two men were young, brazen, and held no love for Bishop Santos’ congregation. One of them would be leaving a family behind tonight. The revelation made Nadine sigh. She hoped that these two idiots already made peace with the consequences of their actions, and that they were content to die as martyrs.

Stepping out of her alley and into the bare street Nadine started walking towards the pair. She didn’t try to make her steps silent, and even kicked an empty can to announce her presence. As simple as the motion was, the swinging of her boot sent the aluminum cylinder into the air and noisily smacked against the curb behind the two vandals. When they turned to face her Nadine didn’t say anything as she continued to close the distance staring directly at the young men. She raised a hand up and snapped her fingers, making a green magic seal appear over her hand temporarily.

She hoped they would at least split up, but in their panic they both ran down the street back the way they came. Feeling no thrill in this hunt the demi-human gave chase with an irritated exhale.

She chased after the two men down the road, and into an alleyway that became a dead end. As Nadine slowed down to a stop in front of the two men she narrowed her eyes at them. They hadn’t even thought of a plan for if they had gotten caught. These guys were in way over their head, even before Nadine had ever gotten involved. Her eyes snapped to one of them as he started to talk in a shaky voice.

"Do you know what is scarier than the monsters who hide in the light and show their teeth in the dark? The monster who does not hide in the light, but hides its teeth behind a smile."

Nadine’s harsh glare returned after hearing that. She didn’t even feel threatened as they raised their fists in preparation for a brawl.

“Shut it,” she said emphatically in no mood for their self righteous bullshit, “you two grabbed the snake by its tail instead of its head. Your stupidity is going to cost you, and neither of you look ready to die to me. Cut the crap, and I’ll make it quick.”

“It’s two on one, lady. I’ll play those odds,” bragged the other man as he rushed forward and threw a fist.

Nadine’s hands came up at the ready as she bared her sharpened teeth in frustration, rushing right into her opponent’s attack. So much for doing things cleanly, and to top it off these two were pissing her off. Not holding back at all she rammed the heel of her hand into the man’s bicep, both stopping his punch and breaking his arm. Before he could even acknowledge what happened Nadine’s second hand came in just as hard, jabbing a fist against the man’s throat, crushing it.

To his credit, the man only dropped to his knees. That wasn’t going to save him, though. With a firm grasp she grabbed him by the throat before remembering about the other vandal. Golden eyes glared at the man who took a step back in return, a look of disbelief and terror on his face. Not wasting another second the demi-human lifted the injured man back up to his feet with only the hand around his neck. Rather unceremoniously she then slammed him against one of the alley’s walls before letting his body drop. Blood smeared from the back of the man’s head down the wall as he crumpled.

There was no look of triumph in Nadine’s eyes when she returned her glare to the remaining man. There was only resentment, both at her victims, and herself.

She had made the second man’s death quicker than the first. It was the only mercy she would grant him as a reward for not resisting any further. Nadine didn’t even bother trying to hide the bodies. If Dahlia’s horrors didn’t claim them before the morning came then they would get their burial. Maybe they’d have better luck in the afterlife. If anything, she hoped they would find peace at least.

On her way to Bishop Santos’ church she passed by the community center again. Nadine stopped to study one of the flyers for the church. It promised salvation from the brutal evils of the city, and safe passage into a prosperous future. It also warned to beware of heretics and interlopers. As someone who wasn’t particularly religious Nadine found these words to ring hollow to herself. Although, maybe being just a normal human living in a town like Dahlia, then those words might start to sound promising.

She didn’t know what disgusted her more, Santos’ lies, or the people who willingly flocked to his sermons.

One of her hands reached out, her glove still streaked with blood. She ripped the paper down from the wall and crumpled it before tossing the trash aside. Maybe she’d try to see if she could speak to Bishop Santos directly.
