It felt like no matter how hard the rune knights tried to purge crime, there would always be rats scurrying around in the shadows of Hosenka. If one boss was arrested more splinter factions would appear as the power vacuum consumed the underlings. A city of excess that thrived on greed. Corrupt places like this always made Nadine chuckle whenever they were compared to swamps, and how the law was going to drain the scum from society. Having lived in a swamp as a child she could safely say that swamps were far cleaner than the gaudy crown that was Hosenka.

Still, the rats needed to be cleaned out one way or another. The target for this mission wasn’t of high value, but they weren’t insignificant enough to let go, either. An informant that had been playing both sides had finally crossed a line, and was considered a burnt asset now. While the rune knight who had tasked Nadine with this job didn’t give any specifics regarding the target’s life, she had also been explicitly told: ‘one less rat in the gutters wouldn’t be missed.’

So much for a fair trial. This was not her country, though; its politics were largely of no concern to the demi-human.

Ever since she had come back from the Fieros Girdle she had been able to see things whenever she looked at people. Not literal signs or letters floating in the air, no. However, line of sight to a person revealed knowledge to her about that person. She wasn’t sure if it was a blessing or a curse, but surely it was the latter here in the Crimson Quarter.

She tried not to look at people as she made her way down the street. If Nadine had thought that most of Hosenka’s population were soft degenerates with too much time on their hands, the Crimson Quarter only drove that point right home with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. There was a lot of selfishness and pain locked up inside the people that frequented this place. Almost everyone had enemies, and true friends were few and far between.

Raising a gloved hand up to her face she rubbed at her eyes with a sigh after having the misfortune of glancing at a particularly slimy leech of a human being. This night couldn’t end fast enough. The sooner she found that informant the better. She still had to decide what to do with the man in the end, too.

Nadine waited across the street from a brothel the man frequented. With Hosenka’s nightlife getting underway there was a good chance he’d return to this place. When she finally saw the man walking down the street towards the whorehouse. All things considered, she was glad she caught him before he got inside. Nadine didn’t even give the man the courtesy of a chance to surrender.

Aiming to provoke a fight she walked towards him and roughly bumped shoulders with him, staggering the informant. After the bait had been taken, the fight that followed was inevitable. Killing him was simply a matter of self defense now, and she drew the man into an alley to finish the job. Despite the target’s foul mouth he ended up dying rather quietly after Nadine had crushed his throat. Had the man not said some disparaging comments about demi-humans Nadine might have knocked him out before killing him, but then he had to go and make things personal.

As she was leaving the alley she was stopped by several people. The only one that stood out from the thugs was a man in a suit that looked both too clean for this part of town, but appropriate for shady dealings. They wanted to strike a deal since Nadine had damaged one of his assets. Her life, in exchange for lying to the law to keep them guessing. Nadine made a counteroffer after sizing the bodyguards up, demanding jewels instead and on the spot.

She ended up walking home a little richer than she had first anticipated that night, and rather happy that one less degenerate was walking this earth. Lying to the law about the man’s death didn’t seem like that big a deal to her, they’d figure things out in time and their problem was dealt with. To Nadine, everybody came out a winner.
