#26Mary Wraith

Mary Wraith
After a mad dash through the streets and twisted alleys, the eerie shadow finally reached her home. Beaten as it was, she still considered it her safe haven. Getting back here had taken a long while despite her frenzied pace. She had... kind of... gotten lost along the way. Gasping for breath, she desperately dug out the key and clawed the door open. Once the rickety slab of wood slammed shut behind her, she slumped into a quivering heap. She had really just run away... Lying about her departure no less... Alternating waves of panic and shame washed over her. Dark whispers endlessly repeated what a terrible guildmate she was to Judith...

The long night passed slowly. Mary’s bloodshot eyes snapped wide open when someone knocked on the door. “N-no one is home...” Another terrible, desperate lie... Only when she was absolutely sure the uninvited visitor had left, she dared to peek outside. Much to her surprise, she found... some manner of gift? A care package? Inside it were all sorts of adorable creatures. They reminded her of home. Of the bats and other grim creatures that lingered in the family crypts. A tentative bite confirmed that they were as delicious as they seemed.

Guilt still weighed heavily on the ghastly mage’s shoulders. This was a second time now that the motherly guildmate had given her something. And... She had nothing to give back in return... The thought stabbed through her heart. Hesitation was quickly shaken off. No. Debts had to be repaid, in life or in death. That was one of the many ironclad rules of the proud Wraith family. Mother and father would have been terribly disappointed if they found out she had been unable to pay back someone’s kindness. With renewed fervor, she turned to the bookshelf that housed her research. If she couldn’t offer anything material... Then perhaps she could give the kind friend something immaterial?

Ah, but that would be a ghost story for another time...
