It was yet another idle day in Dahlia City. The previous week had been a strange time for Nuala, to say the least. Dahlia was actually a decent place to find work and money in, in spite of being so monster ridden. Ever since the appearance of the guild, the city had actually improved in many aspects and all the members, and hopefully the citizens, were pleased with the results. She had decided to get a bit more insight into what exactly the people of Dahlia were up to and part of that was discovering all the secrets of Aldenwald, the local forest. These woodlands were infamous for harbouring all sorts of demons, werewolves and vampires.

It served as a home to many dark races, but also bandits and strange cults could be found there. Aldenwald was quite special and unlike most forests that could be found in Fiore. It was darker than most, there was mist and fog everywhere and you could hardly ever see very far, now matter how good your eyesight was. And even when the sun was shining brightly over Dahlia Town, it seemed as though within Aldenwald itself it was always night. Most of the towns people stayed away from the forest because it scared them. It was the best decision, in Nuala’s opinion.

Unfortunately they also couldn’t prevent the monsters from coming out and attacking the villagers every now and then, however, and that was when the guild came into play. Every once in a while the villagers gathered some money for a bounty and offered it to the members of the guild or random mercenaries that was just passing through. While Nuala thought of the recent events of the previous day, she was simultaneously on her way to get her hands on such a bounty. Frankly, Nuala didn’t know how to feel about the whole cult situation. She had discovered a cult within the depths of the forest that practiced necromancy and weirdly enough, they had requested her help various times by now.

The tasks were never good and it was definitely not what a normal and sane person would participate in but Nuala figured that if they wanted to reign over Dahlia, it would probably be a good idea to know what was going on around town. After all this was their home now and if there was a guild practicing necromancy, Kaiser probably wanted to know anyways.

This time around Nuala was headed for the Warmwool Inn, a place that served as a bar and a hospital at the same time. Calling it a hospital was probably a stretch, but there were some beds located in the basement for the sick and wounded. Because of this, the barkeeper and general staff at the inn also always knew if there was a bounty or something on some of the monsters from the forest. It was just after noon when Nuala was on her way to the inn. The town was relatively quiet today and everyone was going about their business as usual.

When Nuala arrived at the inn she took a seat by the bar and ordered a simple, non alcoholic drink and something to snack on. There were already a few people around and the majority of them were villagers having something to eat for lunch before they returned to work. Nuala sat in silence for a while until the bartender had prepared her drink and her snack and gave her both. Nuala thanked the woman with a nod and took a long sip from her drink while snacking on the pudding she had been given. It was really delicious and she really liked this place.

They made delicious food for some reason. Eventually after enjoying her meal for a bit, Nuala decided to speak up and ask if there were any news. “How’s the situation been lately? I’m open to do some work if needed,” she said to the bartender. The man immediately responded. “I was hoping you would ask. Some of the villagers came by yesterday with a bounty, asking me to pass it by one of you guys if possible. Although I do think they were hoping for the red lady to do it. No offense, she’s just so effective.” Nuala couldn’t help but roll her eyes at that. “Are you saying that you think I’m not capable enough?”

He immediately shook his head with wide eyes. “No of course not! I will bring you the bounty immediately!” He disappeared into the back where the kitchen was located and returned almost immediately with a scroll of paper in his hand which he handed to Nuala. The Voidling who was still eating took a glance at the scroll of paper and frowned. “That’s a lot of money for some werewolves,” she noted. The bounty was on a werewolf pack that needed to be eliminated.

Nuala then started reading through the bounty information properly. Aldenwald was filled with vampire covens and werewolves lairs, so this wasn’t really news. It had been a problem for a long time now and no matter how often they sent someone to get rid of the werewolves and lower their numbers, they managed to breed more and more of their kind and in the end their numbers were never truly diminishing. Nuala had never really thought about it, but she wondered if there were other ways to make a werewolf. A way that didn’t take as long as birthing one to two werewolf parents and waiting for the child to be grown.

Nuala knew that vampires could basically transform each other through special bites and a near death experience and frankly, from what she heard it wasn’t pretty. But whether or not werewolves had an ability like that, the Voidling did not know. The bounty called for wizards and mercenaries of all sorts to attack and get rid of a very specific pack of werewolves that had set up their lair a little too close to the border of the forest that bordered Dahlia City. The location was too close to the farmers who lived on the edge of town and it endangered them too much.

Usually the vampires and werewolves did a decent job at taking care of each other, but Nuala didn’t mind jumping in this time, especially after seeing how high the reward was. It was only fair she supposed, considering that werewolves could be a serious opponent. She had to be really smart and quick about this, using a weapon and her sneak attacks to take out one after another – it was the best way to do it. Werewolves had really good smell, so even if they couldn’t hear or see her she had to be extraordinarily careful with how she approached this situation.

Nuala quickly finished up the meal and pointed at the bounty. “I will be taking this after I’m done eating,” she said to the bartender. “Please inform the villagers who put up this bounty to be ready with the money for when I return. I have nothing else to do at the moment anyways.” The bartender nodded. “Alright then, be careful.” Nuala ignored him for the rest of her time in the bar, finished eating and drinking and then passed him a few coin to pay for the meal.

The villagers who had admitted the bounty hadn’t been able to give a proper location as to where exactly the werewolf pack was at, but Nuala would find them eventually. She left the bar and travelled down the city road until she reached the border. From here on, it was mostly farm lands and a bunch of mills and livestock that graced the country and since it was still early afternoon, the sun was shining brightly. The weather was great. Nuala suspected that werewolves, or lycans as they were called, preferred to be hunting in the night when their prey had a harder time spotting them.

This made no difference for Nuala, who could see clearly at night and day no matter what. But she decided that it would probably be a good idea to search for them while the sun was still up. The sun was warm and comfortable and she took a wild guess that they were probably resting now, dozing under the sunlight while it was still there, before they went on their hunt at night. Nuala decided to stop by some of the farmers houses and ask for directions first. It appeared that those houses who had been built at the very border to the forests were actually most affected, with two houses in particular.

Nuala decided that this was a good place to enter the forest, which wasn’t ask dark during the day as it was at night, but still darker than most forests she had been in. Nuala walked around the forest silently for a while. She had to get deeper into it in order to stand a better chance at finding the lycans. Close to her hip was the rusty dagger that her guild mistress had given her. It was a terrible weapon but hopefully she would soon be able to afford more – if she could even find a good enough weapon, that is.

Once the birds singing died down and it became unbearably quiet in the forest, Nuala slowed down her movement. She knew she was getting close now. The bounty didn’t state how many lycans there were, but she had to be careful nonetheless. Usually they did travel in packs that came in different numbers ranging from three to ten lycans. She could only hope there weren’t ten lycans waiting for her honestly. Nuala listened carefully until she could hear a deep rumble in the air.

She walked closer and hid carefully behind a large tree. She could see three lycans sleeping peacefully on a very small clearing that was surrounded by a lot of flora. They were dozing off in the sun, just like Nuala had suspected and if it weren’t for the ridiculous amount of human bones lying around, she probably would have moved on. But these had to be the lycans that were terrorizing the citizens and so she pulled out her dagger and began her attack. It had to be a sneak attack since she doubted that she could take on three lycans at once. Besides, this was what she was better at anyways.

Once of the lycans was sleeping a few meters further away from the rest. Nuala quickly snuck behind a tree closest to him and tightly grabbed her dagger. If he was truly asleep then he most likely wouldn’t smell her and luckily she was too good at being perfectly still to be noticed. Nuala grabbed his snout with one hand, keeping it close to make sure he wasn’t making any sound before she dug the dagger deeply into his head. He was twitching for a moment before his lifeless body continued to fall back into the position it had previously been in. Nuala quickly removed the dagger and moved on to the second lycan.

Killing this one would prove way more difficult since he was sleeping in an odd position and very close to the third lycan. Nuala snuck closely and quickly as possible and with a lot of force slid the second lycans throat. To make sure it was actually dead, she sliced it a few times, which of course woke up the third lycan, who immediately jumped on her. Nuala quickly became invisible using her abilities as a Voidling and dodged to the site. The lycan was roaring now, mourning the loss of his comrades while looking around searching for her, so everything had to go fast. She saw now choice but to jump on his back and swiftly cut his throat as well.

He tried to shake her off by smashing her into a nearby tree, but it appeared it was already too late for him. Blood was streaming out of his throat and Nuala freed herself from his grasp and kicked him into the guts. Once all of them were finally defeated, they made sure they had no way of getting back up again before she returned to Dahlia where she would collect the bounty from the villagers.
