Rinni Faithe
It was a beautiful night, as always. The moon was full in the sky, the stars were sparkling brightly, and there was a cool chill in the breeze that gave Rinni goosebumps. Her little Snow Vulpix, Winter, on the other hand, seemed to revel in the chilly night air. She was trotting around cooing happily as she chased butterflies and played around the edge of the forest, behaving much like your average fox kit. The only difference between Winter and a normal fox, however, was the fact she possessed 6 fluffy cloud shaped tails.

"Don't wander too far, Winter. We haven't been here before and I don't intend on either of us getting lost." Rinni warned, but despite her stern tone she couldn't help but smile at her adorable friend. Rinni proceeded to take a stroll along the edge of the forest. It was peaceful, quiet (aside from the occasional owl) and Rinni took this time to isolate herself from humanity.

A lot had happened in the past month or so. She had done so many requests and had grown so much stronger as a result. She had even defeated two werewolves and had the scars to prove it. Her shoulder still burned from that last one. She had also made a friend and gained a companion. She hoped to see her friend again someday, to thank him for all he'd done for her. He gave her more than a free ride to some shelter, he had increased her self confidence that day.

She was still a bit shy and awkward around strangers, but where the change affected most was her personal level of self-esteem. She was less scared of failure because all failure meant was getting up and trying again. She could do that. It was easy to learn from mistakes. The real challenge came from succeeding in a task that you were ill-prepared for.

The night loomed on as Rinni ventured forth into the forest. It probably wasn't the safest habit, wandering unknown locations alone, but at least she had Winter to keep her company. Now, Winter was as adorable as adorable can get. She was a snow-white fox-like creature with blue eyes and blue inside her ears. Her four paws were pale blue ending halfway up her legs. The hair on her head, as well as her six tails, were curly having a wispy appearance to them. Her fur was soft, and her body temperature was cold. She was Rinni's dearest friend and the closest thing to her, next to her own family. She loved her little friend whom she lovingly named Winter due to her color and element. Deep down, Rinni was grateful she had someone that would always be by her side. She felt less lonely and more confident when out on her own thanks to the tiny Snow Vulpix.

Many mocked Rinni for her size and age and found Winter to be more adorable than threatening due to her size. But Winter wasn't fully grown yet, and as fox kits go, she was playful and curious about the world. As such, Rinni had to keep an eye on her to ensure the tiny Snow Vulpix not get hurt or lost. She whistled and Winter quickly chased after her owner as the duo explored deeper into the forest.

It was so peaceful here. She heard owls cooing, and saw the occasional nocturnal animal from time to time. Mostly small creatures, nothing threatening. But she enjoyed observing Winter's antics as the fox pounced and chased crickets, lizards, and small rodents. It put a smile on her face as she placed her hands within her pockets and continued deeper into the forest, no longer on the outskirts.

The peaceful quietness of the night reminded her so much of home. She spent far longer away from home than she intended. When she left, it was winter. Now it's spring and a new year. So much has happened in that time. So much has changed. She left home as a D Rank Ranger and was returning as a B Rank. Her brother would probably be proud, to be honest. But her parents must be so worried. What will they do when they see her again? Will they hug her? Scold her? She really didn't want the drama. But she did miss them, so so much.

Beside her, Winter romped in the grass, cooing, and yipping as she chased her tails and pounced on crickets. Rinni smiled as she watched the small Snow Vulpix mousing in the tall grass and underbrush. She kept a close eye on her little friend to ensure the curious six-tailed fox not get lost nor injured in her antics. Rinni ran her hand along a tree, peering up through the thick branches and leaves that made up the bough. She pulled a loose twig off the tree and took a seat on a rock. With a smile, she cast a shadow with the twig and caught Winter's attention. Cooing happily, the white and blue fox bounded toward Rinni and proceeded to chase the shadow. Once she spotted the source, she persistently bounced up and down attempting to capture the twig.

Rinni couldn't help but giggle as she watched her little friend at play. Suddenly, Winter froze and her ears perked up. Rinni heard it too, but just barely. A faint twig snapping in the distance. It could just be campers or an animal. But the young teen decided it's better to be safe than sorry. Gathering Snow into her arms, she proceeded through the forest, moving downwind from the noise.

The little white fox shivered in her arms. Not because she was cold, for she was a creature of Frost, but simply because something in this forest was unnerving. Her ears twitched as she sniffed the air. They were being followed. Rinni was aware of the strange presence as well, and she moved quietly through the forest, trying to stay downwind and hopefully lose their stalker. Winter whimpered softly snuggling into the girl's chest as they moved both quickly and silently through the woods. Her fingers caressed the animal's ears, tickling the blue insides gently. Winter purred in response and licked Rinni's chin.

Whatever was following them appeared to have lost track of them. Rinni sighed in relief and jumped into a tree, landing on a middle branch. She wrapped her arm around the truck, holding Winter in her other arm while scouting the area to see if she could spot who or what was following them. She couldn't see anything. Maybe she had imagined it. She jumped down from the tree and continued her stroll into the forest. The Snow Vulpix squirmed and jumped out of her arms wishing to walk for herself.

Rinni released her companion from her grasp and watched in amusement as Winter began another round of mousing. She chuckled softly, feeling so grateful to have such an adorable companion by her side. She couldn't wait to return home and introduce Winter to her parents and to Masado. She had a feeling they'd love her. Rinni giggled as a thought came to her. 'Mom might love her so much I won't get her back.'

Of course, she was joking with this passing thought. No one would ever separate her from her beloved companion. They were best friends, and they'd protect each other with their lives. Rinni hugged herself as a chilly night breeze chilled past her. At least it wasn't Winter anymore. Not her fox; the season. The snow would make this cold so much more unbearable. Of course, the Snow Vulpix would enjoy it quite a lot.

Lightning flashed in the night sky, clouds now shielding the stars and moon from her view. A raindrop landing on her head prompting her to look up at the sky. Looked like a storm was coming. Rinni sighed and called for Winter to follow her closely. They needed to find shelter from the rain before things got worse. Rinni grabbed a large leaf and, using it as an umbrella, ran into the forest seeking some sort of den or natural shelter for herself and Winter to hide in until the storm passed. It was starting to look hopeless, but then she spotted a makeshift den up ahead. Hopefully, no one was already living there. She cautiously entered the den.

"Hello? Is anyone here?"

No answer. Taking that as a good sign, Rinni entered and explored to see how deep the den was. Winter followed her, letting out a tiny yip as she sniffed the air. She could smell a strange scent that her human owner could not. She yipped repeatedly in an attempt to gain Rinni's attention. Rinni turned toward the Snow Vulpix and asked, "What's the matter, Winter?"

"Who entered cave?" A deep voice came from the deeper parts of the cave.

Perhaps this cave wasn't as empty as she had initially assumed. Winter jumped into the safety of Rinni's arms as Rinni attempted to de-escalate the situation. "We mean you no harm. We're just seeking shelter from the storm. We'll leave once the weather clears up."

"You leave now." A Forest Vulcan stepped into view, towering over the girl with a menacing grin. "Or you no leave at all."

"Shit." Rinni muttered as she looked up at the green ape-like beast that towered over her. He must have stood around 7 or 8 feet tall; compared to her 5'4" she must have looked like a doll in his eyes. She just hoped he didn't intend to break her like one.

"I told you. I'm not here for a fight."

"Good. This easy then."

"What?"

"You woman. You stay."

"Excuse me?"

"You mine now!"

Rinni was shocked. What had she gotten herself into now? If this Vulcan was saying what she thought he was saying. Ew! No way! She was not so desperate as to take a Vulkan as a boyfriend! She pulled her bow off her back and aimed it at the Vulkan. "Listen, you. I am not that kind of girl, you filthy ape. I will be leaving now, and you will not follow me, understood?"

"What little stick going to do?" The Forest Vulkan grabbed her bow with two fingers and tossed it out of her reach. "You mine. You stay." He then reached a large hand toward Rinni, who backed away in repulsion. Winter growled and jumped in front of Rinni, biting the Vulkan's hand.

"Ow. That stings." He mocked, flicking the smaller animal to the side. When he turned around, Rinni was gone. He looked for her and spotted her running toward her Arcing Bow. He charged toward her, trying to stop her from obtaining her weapon. He was fast, but she was faster. Bow in hand, she kept running while drawing back the string. An arrow materialized and she fired it at the Vulkan, missing him as it flew past his ear. She wasn't that great at moving targets; or running while shooting.

An eerie howl filled the air as the den became colder. They both looked and realized the howl was coming from Winter. Her eyes were glowing blue as she dashed toward the Forest Vulkan. Her speed was so much faster than moments ago, which caught the ape off guard as she tackled his legs, knocking him off balence slightly.

As the Vulcan staggered, Rinni took advantage before he could recover. She aimed her bow once more, and a mana arrow materialized yet again. Taking careful aim this time, Rinni fired the arrow and it struck the Vulcan in his back causing him to howl in pain and anger. He turned his attention toward Rinni, grabbing her petite body in his massive hands and squeezing the life out of her. She screamed in pain as she writhed in vain to escape. Winter growled and opened her mouth releasing a blast of cold air to save her owner. Shivers ran through the Forest Vulkan's spine as he tossed Rinni to the side, howling in pain. Rinni grunted as her body bounced off the wall and hit the cold, hard ground.

Enraged, the massive Forest Vulkan turned his attention toward Winter, charging at the six-tailed fox kit with intent to kill. Rinni tried to stand up to protect her friend, but she was in too much pain and collapsed again, her eyes blurring. "Winter..." She whispered, willing herself to hold on. She couldn't blackout. Winter needed her. She would never abandon her. Aiming her bow, she readied an arrow from a lying down position. Her aim was shaky, but she had to try to at least hinder the beast so they had a chance to escape. Hinder, if not kill.

She released the bowstring and the arrow struck the monster's leg. He howled in pain, falling to his knees and growling in anger. If anything, the attack slowed him down considerably. This was good. She just needed a moment to catch her second wind and get to her feet. If they could reach the den exit, they could escape and this beast would be unable to chase them down.

Leaning on the wall for support, Rinni slowly pulled herself to her feet. She was breathing heavily, clearly winded from the attacks against her. She looked at Winter. The Snow Vulpix was also panting. They had to get out of here quickly. If not, they were as good as dead. This monster was too strong for her. Once she regained her composure she shouted for Winter to "Do it!" The small fox seemed to understand what she meant as she unleashed a blast of cold air from her mouth, freezing the cave floor in a field of ice.

Rinni and Winter took off running toward the exit. Rinni slid slightly but managed to maintain her balance long enough to get out of the den. The Forest Vulcan tried to chase them, limping from the previous damage. He yelled for her to come back as he slid on the ice and fell with a loud thud. Rinni didn't dare look back as she and Winter kept running. It was still raining, and a flash of lightning followed by a crash of thunder confirmed it had no intent on stopping anytime soon. The girl and the fox continued running for a good distance to ensure they were far away from the Forest Vulcan.

She had heard stories of Vulcan, but that was the first time she ever encountered one. Bending over and placing her hands on her knees, she panted for breath as she recovered from her experiences at the den and from her escape. She was quick and quiet, but she was exhausted. Looking over at Winter it was obvious she wasn't the only one. The white and blue fox had fallen over her side rising and falling with each heavy breath.

Rinni gently scooped the tired creature into her arms, cradling her comfortingly. She gently nuzzled her furry cheek with her own. As the fox fell asleep in her arms, Rinni gently continued her trek through the woods, backtracking toward the outskirts with the intent of returning to town.

Rinni Faithe
After spending so much time in the solitude of the night, Rinni learned several things about herself. First, that she was stronger than she gave herself credit for. Second, that she loved and missed her family dearly, and lastly that she enjoyed the peace and calm of the night. She especially loved stargazing and observing the phases of the moon. She didn't so much care for the chilly night air and made a mental note to dress warmer on chilly nights. She was built like Winter; an animal with a fluffy coat made to endure the cold easily. She was a human, and it took a bit more effort to handle the elements.

She envied those who took moments like this in stride. Enduring the extreme cold or heat. Making a battle with a monster twice your own size look so easy. She strived to be that strong one day. She glanced down at the sleeping fox as she rested nuzzled in her arms, her six tails draping over her arm, swaying and bouncing with each step she took. Her own hair bounced lightly on her shoulders, the gentle breeze blowing through it causing the strands to dance in the breeze. At this point, her hair and clothing were soaked from the rain.

A crash of thunder startled her and Winter, causing the adorable kit to wake up with a yelp of surprise. She gently stroked her thumb through the fox's fur soothing her. Winter responded by licking Rinni's hand and nuzzling her nose into the crook of her arm in appreciation. Rinni smiled and reassured her little friend, "Don't worry. We'll be home soon."

By 'home' she meant the inn they were renting. Her harm was a bit farther away than that. In fact, Winter never saw Rinni's home. So it'll be interesting to see her reaction to the new sights and smells. Everyone was so friendly and peaceful back home, she was sure they'd all fall in love with Rinni and those who know her will welcome her back with open arms.

Finally, Rinni could see the outskirts just up ahead. She could barely make out the path leading into town through the trees. Winter yawned and nuzzled her face into the six tails and fell asleep again. Rinni's arms were also asleep as they held the adorable bundle of white fluff. Rinni didn't mind though. She loved Winter and could afford to sacrifice the use of her arms momentarily for the sake of her fox taking a cat nap. She chuckled at the irony of that joke. Once they got home, they could enjoy a bath, she could get out of these wet clothes, get them both something hot to eat, and then settle into bed for the rest of the night.

They had a long journey ahead of them to get back home. She wasn't sure if she'd take the train or travel on foot. She wasn't too fond of crowds, so she considered the idea of walking. Then again, it was a long journey between Ochidia and Merigold, so perhaps the train was the best option. She sighed and peered up at the sky through the canopy of trees. She wished she had an amazing mount like her friend. Riding his pegasus with him was amazing. She fantasized for a moment of having an amazing creature of her own to travel with.

She silently wished Winter was horse-sized. But she soon decided she wouldn't change a hair on her curly white fluffy head. She loved Winter just the way she was. And no matter what the future held, that one truth would never change. The rain suddenly stopped and the clouds parted giving way to a clear starry night sky. Rinni smiled as she gazed into the pale moon. Perhaps things were going to be okay after all.

If only for a day.
