So, you three want to train with me? Using swords?” Ikazuchi couldn’t restrain himself as his tone was naturally very playful in response to the request. The trio was naturally very respectful as they made the request, and he didn’t mean to mock their earnest request. Truthfully, he respected their willingness to make the request despite their pride. Unlike a normal spar, they wanted guidance regarding the sword from Ikazuchi who was considered a Master Swordsman. As members of the same guild, it would be a waste to not capitalize on his presence.

“That’s right!” No one took offense as the one in the middle clearly expressed their intentions. “Your swordsmanship left a lasting impression on us during the monster attack.” This was said by the one on the left. “I just want to get stronger!” The one on the right was even more direct and honest than the others. Ikazuchi knew that the trio were all warriors like himself. He may be stronger than them, but they all had their own place in the guild.

Let’s go then.” Ikazuchi didn’t think much about it as he had been itching to fight recently. After his battle with Emil, he had felt himself on the verge of a breakthrough in his techniques. He spent most of his time contemplating what he was lacking and seeking the final improvement needed to be considered a Grandmaster. It wasn’t easy to clearly define the levels, but he hoped that sparring with the trio could be beneficial for both himself and them. He knew from experience that he could gain a new perspective while teaching, so that may be able to fill the remaining gap.

After agreeing to the training, Ikazuchi led the excited trio to the training arena that was mostly empty due to the time of day. No words were said as all four grabbed the various training equipment that suited them. Ikazuchi naturally picked two identical swords that were similar in dimensions to his personal ones. He was also aware of what the trio specialized in, so he wasn’t surprised to see one holding an extremely heavy two-handed sword, another with a sword and dagger, and the final one holding a sword and shield.

Let’s start with some duels, we can do a proper battle after that.” Ikazuchi was calm and direct with his statement as he directed his attention towards the one wielding a greatsword. “You’ll be the first.” He pointed his sword at his opponent as he spoke, intentionally provoking the man. He hoped that his opponent would come at him seriously from the beginning due to this. ‘...I don’t think it was necessary though.’ The one that he had singled out first was the one that proudly proclaimed his desire for strength.

He didn’t show any physical reaction to Ikazuchi’s provocation, but his fighting spirit seemed to burn brighter despite that. The other two had vacated the area shortly after, their gazes focused on the pair that immediately engaged each other. Neither Ikazuchi nor his opponent paid any attention to the burning gazes of the pair that assessed their actions. Instead, they continued to move and clash in varying ways. Their skills were being fully displayed as the two warriors battled freely.

Ikazuchi’s steps were careful, steady, and particularly heavy during the match. He intentionally used his swords individually, never striking out simultaneously. It wasn’t particularly apparent to his current opponent, but the two observers were gradually noticing this as the two fought. It was somewhat uncomfortable for the pair to witness the gap between them so clearly, especially since the three were roughly on par in skill.

‘There’s a lot of wasted movements and no flow to his attacks…’ Ikazuchi was fighting defensively in order to truly understand his opponent’s skill level and capabilities. He would give him proper advice after their match that could be applied in the group battle that would follow. Truthfully, this wasn’t something he was going to do out of kindness, it would just put more pressure on him and give him the challenge he needed in order to gauge his own progress. ‘I think it’s time to finish this…’

His decision to finish the match resulted in him naturally shifting from defense to offense. Like before, he continued to move in a particular way. He particularly focused on using a single one to deflect his opponents strikes and connect attack after attack with extremely efficient movements. It was a simple and direct way to fight, but he was actively attempting to give his sparring partner a unique experience that would benefit him.

The spectators watched as their companion’s breathing was disrupted during the short battle, something that they knew wasn’t normal. Their knit brows and expressions of contemplation made it clear that they understood what was going on just as Ikazuchi placed the blade of the training sword to the throat of his opponent. The natural response was for the man to relax and concede as he caught his breath. Ikazuchi stopped here and signaled for the other two to approach as he did that.

What did you guys see?” Ikazuchi wore a smile as he questioned the spectators before addressing his opponent. One of the two hesitated before ultimately not speaking, and only then did the sword and shield wielder speak. “...It seemed like you were the one wielding a greatsword.” The one that had remained silent nodded at this response while the actual greatsword wielder was confused by that statement.

Ikazuchi naturally nodded as he received a surprisingly accurate answer. “That’s correct, I fought in the way that would be most comfortable for myself to use a greatsword.” His gaze turned towards his defeated opponent at this point. “I relied on my greater strength to simulate the weight of the sword, but the rest of my actions were intended to be an example for you.

After saying that, he went on to explain the fundamentals of fighting with a heavy weapon and how it differed from a lighter sword like what he personally preferred. In a way, what he said was common sense that these warriors should have known. Still, it was very different for them to actually experience or witness it. The way he minimized movements and utilized parries to create opportunities to strike decisive blows was very different from the agile and aggressive style they knew he specialized in. The slow and heavy style that was steady as a mountain served as great inspiration for the greatsword user as he received the explanation and recalled their fight. He also understood after Ikazuchi finished that he had unintentionally neglected the benefits of his weapon in pursuit of an unsuited fanciful and agile style like his companion. ‘Well, if you were as strong as myself then that wouldn’t be a problem.’ This is what Ikazuchi would have said had the man vocalized such thoughts.

You’re up next.” Ikazuchi met the gaze of the man who wielded the sword and dagger, the same one who chose to remain silent rather than answer his question. Among the three, this man seemed somewhat meek and lacking confidence compared to the others. This was something that Ikazuchi knew needed to be corrected, but he wasn’t sure how he could encourage the man. While he had struggled with his own insecurities and frustrations, he had always fundamentally maintained a high amount of confidence in himself and his swordsmanship. ‘Let’s see what we can do.’

He had planned to fight first with this man as well, but that thought quickly disappeared after seeing his stance. “You… Are you messing with me right now?” He couldn’t help questioning his opponent who had a very backwards stance for someone attempting to fight with his particular weapon combination. The visible confusion of his opponent who had been prepared for his rush confirmed that his opponent was taking this seriously.

Ikazuchi shook his head with a sigh as he clarified for the man. “Your stance is wrong for a sword and dagger style.” Ikazuchi ignored the fact that his opponent’s face reddened as he asked another question. “Who taught you?” It was a very simple question, albeit somewhat intrusive. From the way the man avoided his gaze, it was clear that there was some embarrassment. He was going to press him further when he heard the sword and shield warrior on the side call out. “He’s someone who trained to use dual daggers and recently switched to sword and dagger. He hasn't had anyone teach him the way to use the sword, or about a proper style.”

Ikazuchi couldn’t help but look at his current opponent somewhat differently after hearing that. ‘It takes quite a lot of guts to step out of your comfort zone…’ His thoughts paused for a minute before he added on internally. ‘That also explains his lack of confidence.’ At this point, he knew that the person in front of him would need some proper guidance before he could engage in battle with him. If not, there would be nothing to gain against a beginner swordsman.

Tell me why you decided to add a sword to your arsenal.” Ikazuchi had some ideas, but he needed to know why the man made the switch before he spoke carelessly. “I had always planned to do so for the sake of range and versatility.” The man spoke candidly before averting his gaze once more and adding. “I underestimated the difficulty though…” Ikazuchi couldn’t help but chuckle at this fact, his opponent seemed more amusing due to his whimsical decisions.

In that case, it’s up to you what you can learn today.” Hearing this caused the man to perk up and focus on him as Ikazuchi began explaining. “First of all, your dagger should be in your leading hand, not your sword. Even if you are more comfortable with it and want to rely on it, you need to take advantage of its nimble nature in order to effectively use a sword and dagger together.” After that, he continued to give a basic lecture while walking the man through the motions of certain basic movements. He was pleasantly surprised to see how the man absorbed and applied his teachings, likely due to his existing experience dual wielding daggers. Even if the weapons weren’t the same, the coordination and general skills were on display. ‘Not bad…’ This was what Ikazuchi thought as the time finally came for the two to spar.

The battle that followed was one where Ikazuchi and the man both displayed their techniques and various dual wielding skills. The match started slow as his opponent adjusted to his teachings, but the two gradually picked up speed with each exchange. They both displayed nimble movements, agile attacks, and Ikazuchi intentionally led his opponent to get used to using his more skilled dagger techniques to open up his defenses to strike with the sword. Naturally, these attacks were unable to succeed due to being guided by him. Despite that, by the time the battle came to an end he seemed to have regained some confidence in himself.

As he had given the man all of the guidance he could before the battle, there wasn’t anything left to say as he casually gestured him off to the side. While this dismissive attitude may have generally upset the man under normal circumstances, currently he was too excited and grateful to care about Ikazuchi’s attitude. The final of the three stepped forward as he saw his companion approaching. There was clear respect in his gaze, but he also moved with confidence. ‘I guess he’s a bit better than the others in this regard?’

The two wasted no time as they engaged each other forcefully. Ikazuchi fully displayed his agile and aggressive techniques that he specialized in while his opponent showed a sturdy defense in response to that. For the first time today, he was more frustrated than his opponent. “Are you sure you’re a swordsman?” He couldn’t help but ask this question as the man had yet to swing his weapon, only relying on his shield to deal with Ikazuchi’s assault. And naturally, the man didn’t respond due to having to deal with his attacks.

He may have other methods to deal with the sword and shield normally, but they had been competing based on weapon techniques primarily. ‘This is why I hate shields…’ The fact that someone could hide behind a shield for safety in a fight was good for their health, but extremely dissatisfying for those enjoying the battle. ‘If you won’t go on the offensive, I will just tear open your defenses.’ It wasn’t possible to break their training weapons due to various enchantments, but he could certainly disarm the man.

With that in mind, he pushed himself further as he calculated his strikes and targeted a specific moment to reverse his grip on the sword in his right hand and hook it behind the shield before pulling the man’s guard open. A somewhat wicked smile spread across his face as his left sword knocked away the man’s sword that had been swung in a panic. The end result was the man pinned to the ground with Ikazuchi’s two swords crossed over his neck.

‘I guess that was false bravado?’ Ikazuchi couldn’t help but think this as he withdrew the weapons. He couldn’t know that the man was the type to rely on an extremely skillful defense to land decisive attacks and provide openings for his companions. It was a style of combat that Ikazuchi didn’t even consider as he believed in himself more than anyone else. It may not be an issue for the man, but he had felt that the passive style was only prolonging the inevitable.

You don’t attack enough.” This was the blunt and direct evaluation that Ikazuchi gave the man, eliciting an immediate retort. “I attack when there is an opening!” Ikazuchi looked at the man strangely after hearing that. “And you think that’s enough? Tell me then, why didn’t you attack me?” This immediately shut down any argument that the man could make. It was obvious, he wouldn’t attack if there wasn’t an opening and Ikazuchi knew that wasn’t enough. There were people more skilled than himself, so he couldn’t encourage the man to settle for such a standard.

I don’t even know your skills with the sword, but I am certain that even your defensive skills are too passive. You need to parry and position yourself in order to open your opponents stance and create more openings, otherwise you will never be able to fight those monstrous bastards that are roaming the continent.” Ikazuchi didn’t notice that the three men were looking at him as though he was precisely one such individual. “My final piece of advice, learn from your friend with the dagger more and see if you can apply some of those parrying techniques to your shield usage.” What he said was something that any skilled fighter should be able to do. Many warriors expanded their skills through skills completely unrelated to combat, so he believed that it was more than possible for him to gain something from observing someone close to him.

After sparring with him, he encouraged the three to have a match against each other in order to test their new ideas and skills. They needed to be able to evaluate and improve themselves, and it would be even better if they could recognize each other’s weaknesses better. This would teach them to do so during combat with actual enemies, and also allow them to more easily uncover their faults together rather than seeking out someone like Ikazuchi.

Once the trio had completed this drill, it was finally time for the one versus three battle that he had been looking forward to. Truthfully, the previous three spars had already fulfilled his goal. He had already confirmed the ways that his techniques had improved by this point, but he also hoped to truly solidify his position by displaying those skills freely. “By the way, what are your names?” Despite knowing, he needed to hear it from the men directly in order to address them directly.

From left to right, in the same order as they initially approached, they answered him. Cain, the dagger and sword warrior. Quincy, the sword and shield warrior. Cale, the greatsword user. Although they had readily answered him, they were forced to feel how lacking their presence was for him to not have known their name before now. “I won’t be holding back this time.” With that final comment from Ikazuchi, the battle began.

The fight that ensued was extremely fast paced. Each of the opponents had noticeably improved causing him to feel a certain amount of pride. It was rewarding to see his efforts directly reflect in the skills of those he trained with, even if they were still far from his own level. After today though, he could faintly feel the possibility for them to reach his current level. It was a kind of motivation for himself to see his fellow swordsmen progressing towards his level. It meant that he too would have to keep moving forward in order to protect his current position. His future training and battles would be faced with a renewed passion as he aimed for the peak of swordsmanship.

As he wasn’t pulling his punches, Ikazuchi decisively struck at the openings and weaknesses of his opponents in ways that they hadn’t expected. While he clearly knew their limitations, they had been far from pushing him to his limits before. On the other hand, he clearly knew the extent of the skills and was already more skilled than the trio to begin with. This caused the battle that should have been more intense to end anticlimactically.

All three men were forced to lay on the ground due to both injuries and exhaustion while Ikazuchi stood calming in the middle, finally having broken a sweat during the long battle. “That wasn’t bad, you three.” He couldn’t help but comment on their performance as he returned the training weapons to where he obtained them. He intentionally didn’t add that they may have been able to push him further had they been able to coordinate better. That was something for another day, not one where the three were already exhausted. “I’m heading out first, don’t forget to stop by if you need some maintenance on your gear!” It was just like that, that Ikazuchi made a clean departure from the area.
