Masami

喜多正美

"A client in Crocus?" thought Masami out loud; if he delayed here in Magnolia City more than he already was, his motivation would decay in a way he'd not expect. Masami often had the solution for the lack of determination, but it didn't seem that way recently. Or, it could be that the kami-in-charge is to blame, whoever was writing for Masami—they'd definitely be at fault. If that was the case, then Masami would have no choice but to ride the train of thoughtless demotivation; however, he was given a task, and the workaholic Masami is once again, brought back to the never-ending sights and wonders. "I don't think I can go back to Crocus today, kindly turn them down," he added, speaking as if the person he was speaking to was his assistant. Judina Karlinius was right when she told Masami that he needed to hire a secretary for these sorts of jobs, but it was rather too independent of him not to listen.

The person with the letter insisted that Masami would go, as he needed not to leave Magnolia City for the request. Rather, it was Lucifer's presence that was requested, rather than Masami's, because his reputation allowed the residents of Fiore to recognize the identity of Masami's demon soul, even if it was the same person regardless of forms. Snapping his finger after a sigh, Lucifer was present in an instant, and the normal Masami is long gone. "They'd be buying me dinner, right?" Masami has been wondering that since the start, but he wouldn't be able to utter the wonder without Lucifer's presence. Thick-faced Masami only appears when Lucifer is there to speak for him, allowing him to go through lengths, even if it was the humiliating aftermath that hung by a thread. As if a drunken spirit, Masami ignored all sorts of bashful and timid feelings while in this current form; he'd flip his elongated hair and get himself dressed before walking out of the establishment of businesses. For some reason, he had less clothes in take-over form... wasn't Lucifer the prince of hell?

Now, it would have been more appropriate to refer to Lucifer rather than Masami, considering how the lad's second form is nothing like his own, and that the pride of the demon soul wanted to separate itself from the vessel. Thus, it was Lucifer whom got his vessel dressed appropriately for the meeting, and went off to ride a carriage that the client themselves offered. Masami is no longer a child in this form, so his face of boredom when he read the client's letter inside the carriage had nonetheless intimidated those who sat inside, even the coachman that sat in front whom did not look at Masami but still had the feeling of being watched. Was it Lucifer—the one who was watching everyone that surrounded Masami, making sure that nobody touches his vessel? That is a thought filled with doubt, as Masami in take-over form is already Lucifer, yet not so much?

Sighing while making a fan out of the client's letter, Masami was barely excited on the way to the client's location here in Magnolia City. Lucifer was used to being served while Masami is the one who liked serving; their intertwined souls certainly was not a comfortable outcome, as Masami acted nothing like himself. Or, perhaps, it was Lucifer that allowed Masami to become everything he thought—everything he wanted—and that impulses were just an afternoon snack for the vessel's shameless acts? Without Masami's awareness, they have arrived in a building nearby the Kardia Cathedral, giving Lucifer quite the distasteful look on his face. "Really had to be near that darned cathedral," pulling a tongue out, Masami and Lucifer didn't entirely have a choice but to leave the carriage and meet with the client inside the building. They were assisted by the client's secretary, leading Masami to their designated room, but surely that wasn't enough service for one of the princes of hell.

It was the fourth floor, notably, the floor the elevator stopped at and brought Masami and the secretary to the hallways for the Joyan performer to gaze at the well-designed, minimalist patterns upon the walls, which Lucifer didn't entirely enjoy as much as his vessel. When they arrived at their location, which was a simple business room with a large table, Masami had a feeling that the client would be making an attempt to deal with the Devil—with Lucifer, in other words, and whenever that happens, it often leads with Masami taking care of Lucifer's aftermaths and the side-effects of the prideful demon's choices. Since Lucifer was present in the majority of the take-over form's control, despite Masami wanting to make the choice of succumbing to his anxieties, Lucifer completely denied his vessel's thoughts and hastily went inside to meet with the client.

"I am not selling Hinoki Theater," was what Masami said, immediately after the doors flew open, the eyes of the vessel meeting with a businessman that ruled the majority of the world. "You wanted to see me, so that Masami would not decline, only to be met by tasteful rejection. Masami or Lucifer, we won't give our precious theater out, regardless of whose present," placing the client's letter, which was actually a contract request, onto the tabletop, Lucifer's fury was calmed down by Masami's self-control, "neither am I giving Masami to the likes of you. Not only was the theater the home of arts, but it also became the home of true Joyan artists. What you're trying to do is take that home away." Perhaps the client assumed that the Lucifer-side of Masami only cared about materialistic items including money, and now they were left dumbfounded. There was only one person that waited for Masami's presence, thus that one person had nobody to share their shame with.

Tapping his sharp nails on top of the table, the sounds he made overpowered the sound of a disappointed man's sigh. "Since you wasted your time, how are you going to make up for it?" the tone of the boy's words didn't enlighten the mastermind whom attempted to steal from the Joyan performer, but he was old and professional enough to simply laugh it out. As sinister as it may sound, the businessman clapped and sounded like a gang leader to Masami's ears—he didn't feel so safe afterwards. "I underestimated the demon," he said, even if the scenario wasn't a great issue for Masami. A lot of people had apparently already attempted the same tactic, so there was no way that Masami is going to fall for this one.

At the same time, both Masami and Lucifer were getting used to refusing every cheeky man's offer of fooling the boy, simply because he was a child, and that the information regards Lucifer's presence has spread all-over Fiore, causing businessmen to take advantage of their knowledge regards the prideful demon, only to meet with the same end as this current businessman. Although, Lucifer wanting to gain [something] out of everything was no lie nor joke; if he wasn't expecting the businessman to make up for Masami's lost time, then the demon and his vessel would have already left. Earnestly, they were waiting for a reward for taking their time in arriving to this venue, because Lucifer was prideful enough to do so.

Their disinterest was enough to ruin the mood, and that the secretary was the one feeling the most awkward. "I'm waiting," he added, as if being the footer to the page. The intimidation reeking out of Lucifer's presence should have been enough to cause an army to retreat, but what makes this man so different?

He was starting to get impatient. "What, nothing?" maybe it wasn't a good choice to lash out, all of a sudden, either. Although the better choice was obviously to leave, Lucifer didn't want to go for the obvious choice, thus Masami would have to comply to the demon that had taken him over. And, even if neither Lucifer nor the businessman wanted to play a childish game, they seemed to have applied themselves onto a staring contest, leaving their poor secretary in a very awkward spot.

Getting used to the feeling of being followed, Masami already knew that it no longer matters whether or not you are being followed. His reputation allowed people to gain access to that act, after all, and that it had been that way even before he left Joya. The only solution to that is to become strong enough to protect yourself at the most dangerous times. And, when you are able to do that, then people will gain knowledge of your strength, and will decide not to follow you. At least, that was what Masami learned when he was still in Joya, and that it wasn't even surprising that this businessman knew about Masami's short travel in Crocus City, but did this creep just follow Masami from Crocus until here in Magnolia? Come to think of it, the businessman wouldn't feel so relaxed like this, if they weren't already satisfied meeting Masami face-to-face.

Clicking his tongue, the Masami that was taken over by Lucifer turned away, "Whatever, we're going home." When he held the doorknob, without the consent of the secretary, he felt as if not only his body, but also his soul, had been electrocuted – it forced Masami to change back into his normal form, sealing Lucifer in an instant. The businessman has been talking until this point, but Masami wasn't listening to any of his words, up until he was back to his normal self.

Masami has yet to recover from the sudden, painful shock, and that he couldn't feel his knees when they weakened with no hesitation. And, just like the knees that fell off without his owner's consent, the businessman had grabbed Masami's wrist and pulled him up, seemingly analyzing the poor kid. From the shock, Masami had felt coldness, rather than the warmth of his imploding internal vessels. "Crocus... from Crocus," Masami tried to recall everyone he met from Crocus, trying to remind him who the businessman was. To his surprise, remembering almost instantly, this businessman had the exact same face as one of Masami's previous client's acquaintance. If he recalls correctly, this man was one of the investors in a certain magical business. This businessman wasn't a complete stranger, after all.

"Even if... you do this, I... I won't—! I won't give... the thea—ah!" Lucifer is unconscious, and Masami's in the state of panic. What exactly did this boy do that had enraged such a noble foe? Masami couldn't think any scenarios where he had brought a person to hate him, even if Lucifer was involved in such a case. So, even if he was in great pain, as if his insides ripping into shreds with no anesthesia or any pain-relievers, the victim refused to shed a tear. It didn't look like the businessman wanted to have anything to do with the theater in Hosenka City. In fact, as if what he wanted is right in front of him.

Raising the kid up with one hand, it was as if the large man in a suit had just bought a doll from a exquisite collector's store. The last thing Masami heard was an order, forcing him to close his eyes and accept an unconscious fate, and that the pain will end if he'd just abide. Masami was reminded of the feeling of when his mana was being sapped by different spirits when he was in the spirit world, and that the feeling of being shocked by this man's mana had the exact same experience. Then, if that was the case, all of Masami's mana should have been sapped by now, and that they would be given by a disappointing end. It's rare for stories to end without a hero saving the victim, but what if the hero themselves were the victim?
