Marigold

Description: Marigold is the type of city that everyone has heard of and wishes to visit, but few take the time to actually do so. Situated not far from Hargeon in the Southern quadrant of Fiore, Marigold City is a vibrant, calm place to live. A small city, only being able to provide lodgings for around 15,000 adventurers while only housing a population of 20,000 people itself, Marigold is most well known for the castle, Castle Syllas, where the lord and his family live and oversee the safety and ruling of the city from the top of their hill overlooking the city.

The citizens of Marigold are as calm and peaceful as the city in which they reside: being friendly and welcoming travelers from all walks of life into their city, offering them food and shelter at one of the many inns and restaurants in their small community. If met with, they will always be glad to lend an ear and listen to the stories of the adventurers that have come to their city, or aid with any problems they can help with. Marigold is known as a city of kindness, and the people there, for the most part, reflect and embody that idea perfectly.

Localization: Marigold is situated in a rather unique location compared to many of the other towns and cities of Fiore. On one end, there is Castle Syllas: standing prominent atop a hill, surrounded by forests where the lord and his family go hunting when they aren't mingling with the populace or in their home. In the forests, deer, foxes, and many other creatures reside, and the forest is open for anyone to enter and visit. At night though, noises can be heard from it as wolves prowl looking for their prey.

On the other side of Marigold, past the castle and the city center, is the farmland where most of the income and resources of Marigold originate. Many of the population are farmers if they don't run any other businesses, and the land thrives on the produce that comes from it. Beyond the farms, there is a long winding road to take a traveler to some crossroads, as there is only one path in and out of Marigold. The crossroads will lead an adventurer to Hargeon, or into the woods past Marigold.

Politics: The city of Marigold is overseen and ruled by the Duchy of Syllas, with the current ruler being lord Fernando de Syllas who, with his successor and daughter Rosalia, help boost economy of Marigold and help its citizens prosper. The lord is a fair and kind ruler, never asking for much from his people, allowing them all to live full and happy lives without worry. He rules the city by employing three very simple rules, almost akin to those of a guild due to the small size of Marigold compared to the other towns and cities of Fiore: 1) the people of Marigold are allowed to live freely and without oppression, 2) the people of Marigold are free to sort out their own problems or ask the help of the lord should these problems prove too great, and 3) although the lord has the final say, a city member may appeal to alter any law or decision made by the lord provided they have the support of either a member of the Syllas family personally or one-quarter of the population of the city, excluding visitors.

Following these rules, the people and the lord of Marigold have had very few differences or issues in regards to the ruling of the city and, due to this, they have been able to live and thrive and prosper in the city that is now visited by people from all over Fiore.

Economy: The economy of Marigold is mainly built upon two things: farming and theater. On one side, Marigold is a perfect location for the production of many different foods, and farmers of all sorts live and work the land. A lot of the produce is then sold in the markets in the city itself or the restaurants, while some is sent to other cities to be sold. Marigold beef is something of a delicacy throughout Fiore, and it can be usually only be found in Marigold itself, with a few select stalls being able to sell the produce in places like the merchant city of Baska.

The other side of the economy is built on the arts. Marigold, as well as having Castle Syllas, is home to a grand theater, which is used every month to put on various performances, from stylized battles between mages, to stories told through music. Anything that can entertain the people can usually be found here, being a hotspot to many tourists due to both the events and the beauty of the building.

Culture: Marigold is a prospering city, a farming city where the people welcome all and shun no one. Their culture has evolved with regards to this, as many of the businesses in Marigold are inns or restaurants, selling all sorts of foods for anyone to try. In terms of a large culture like some of the other cities, Marigold does not possess one, but rather the people of Marigold have come to accept and learn about all other walks of life. There will be restaurants dedicated to a specific city's delicacies, as well as specialists on most cultures in the city. Due to accepting so many tourists and welcoming all, the people have adapted and learned about other cultures and religions, to better understand the people coming to them.

Locations

Castle Syllas:  This castle belongs to the Syllas familia. They happily run things in Marigold Town and show great love for the citizens. The castle can be freely entered by adventurers in order to take quests but causing any disturbances will result in immediate arrests or worse.

Hillside Houses: In the past most of the farmers had to walk a while to reach the acres and work the lands but Lord Syllas has made their lives a lot easier by providing them all proper housing on the hillside in return for their constant service. Despite being a prospering city they haven't known any famine for years.

Marigold Theater: The centre of the arts and excellence in Marigold, the Marigold theatre is where many tourists and citizens will venture for a night of romance and intrigue. Often there you can find the star performer of Marigold, Alice Nightingale, and her young protégé, Rebecca.

Windmill:  A mill is located between the houses on the hillside. The grain that the farmers bring in is turned into flour here and then sent to the bakers down in the city streets of Marigold City. The farmers run carts down each day with filled pots.

Farmland: At the foot of the hillside houses, you will find the farmland of Marigold: where most of the produce comes from. This area is guaranteed to always be busy with farmers and farmhands busy at work. Some, like Farmer Jim, are also looking for brave adventurers to help out with some tasks.

NPCs

Fernando de Syllas: The current ruler of Marigold City, and a ruler loved by all of his subjects, Fernando is currently in his mid thirties and has only been the lord for four years, having first decided to travel the world as a mage. However, he is still just as powerful as a mage and not one to trifle with. He will not let any outsider cause trouble for his people, and is one of the kindest, most benevolent rulers currently in Fiore.

Rosalia de Syllas: Very different to her father, Rosalia has grown up in Marigold City and only Marigold, having never been allowed the chance to travel or escape. The future successor of her father, she has the capacity for kindness but instead lives with only contempt for her father, who will not let her live her life on her own terms. Despite keeping her name out of it all, she is usually the one responsible, either directly or indirectly, for the dark acts that occur in Marigold, an otherwise perfect city.

Alice Nightingale: The star idol and biggest celebrity of Marigold besides the nobles, Alice will spend most of her time in the theater, either working on her next performance or commanding her protégé to do all her chores. A secretly malicious woman who will not allow anyone to steal the limelight. A real diva, when it comes to the shows and the casting, there is usually not a great deal of truth in who gets the parts and why.

Rebecca Parker: Having lost her parents at a young age and now being raised and trained by Alice in the theatrical arts, Rebecca is a sweet innocent girl in a troubling world. Akin to Cinderella, she is treated like dust by her 'mother', and given ridiculous tasks to do, despite her young age. However, she isn't completely naive about everything, and knows all about Alice's inner workings of the theatre. Rebecca knows much more than she lets on to anyone, and this gives her unique positions and stances on the acts that occur within the theater, some say she could have an influence greater than her mother's.

Farmer Jim: Quite possibly the oldest and most well respected of his profession, Farmer Jim has being growing and harvesting grain since before the Duke was alive. Currently in his late fifties and still fighting fit, he will often be seen combing his fields or at the windmill. However, he understands that he is getting older, and so sometimes he may require the help of a willing soul, either to man the fields or clear out some pests.
