A lot had changed in Joya since the civil war that toppled the Shogun. Yet, despite the shattering defeat of the old regime, the echoes of that conflict still lingered, haunting the lands like restless spirits. Villages scarred by flames, fields blackened by war, and families broken by loss told stories of a country striving to piece itself back together. Time, it seemed, moved strangely in Joya—what had happened only a few years ago felt like an era long past, even though the wounds were far from healed.

Tōga stood on the outskirts of a quiet village, leaning against a tree, a sandwich in hand. His spiky pink hair ruffled in the light breeze as he took a large bite, chewing thoughtfully—or perhaps absentmindedly. His gaze wandered across the rolling hills, a patchwork of green and gold, though his mind was far from the scenery. “Okay, Strigr-chan,” he said, his voice muffled by the mouthful of bread and filling. “What are we doing again today?

Strigr, standing a few feet away, sighed audibly. She adjusted her pristine kimono, its intricate floral design swaying softly with her movements. Her golden locks shimmered under the late afternoon sun, but her piercing blue eyes carried a weight of seriousness that contrasted sharply with Tōga’s casual demeanor. Clearing her throat, she replied, “We’ve received word that a small, affluent family—one with lingering ties to the old regime—plans to spark an uprising. Their hope is to ignite rebellion and restore the Shogunate’s control.” She paused, studying her master’s face. Predictably, his expression remained uninterested, his eyes glazed over as though her words were little more than background noise. “And let me guess,” Tōga said with a dramatic exhale, “we’re supposed to stop them, snuff out their little rebellion before it turns into something bigger?

Strigr nodded, her ears twitching slightly in annoyance. “Correct, Otō-san. This mission comes directly from the country’s provisional government. They want to ensure no remnants of the old regime remain to destabilize the fragile peace we’ve managed to attain.” Tōga finished his sandwich, dusting the crumbs from his hands before stretching languidly. “Feels weird, doesn’t it?” he said after a moment, his tone unusually reflective. “We’re supposed to fight for peace, but half the time, I can’t tell who the bad guys are. The Shogun? The rebels? Us? Everyone did their share of damage, and at the end of the day, we’re just chasing ghosts.”

Strigr’s gaze softened, though her voice remained steady. “It’s not our job to decide who was right or wrong, Otō-san. We’re here to protect the people who are still alive, the ones who need a future without fear of another war.

Tōga rubbed the back of his neck, his characteristic grin returning as he attempted to shake off the heavy mood. “Fair enough. So, we’re ghostbusters today, huh? Hunting down the last whispers of the Shogunate and keeping the peace. Could be worse.

The dragoness couldn’t suppress a small smile. “You might actually take this mission seriously for once.

He laughed, the sound carefree despite the tension underlying their task. “Don’t count on it. But hey, if things get dicey, you’ll have my back, right?”

Strigr rolled her eyes, but there was a flicker of fondness in her expression. “Always.”

The two set off toward the affluent family’s estate, the path ahead winding and uncertain. Though they often approached their missions with differing perspectives, their bond was unshakable. As they moved forward, the weight of Joya’s past loomed over them like a shadow, but they carried with them the hope of forging a brighter future—even if it meant walking through the lingering embers of the past.

Infiltrating the family’s stronghold was almost laughably easy for Tōga and Strigr. The fortress, positioned strategically in the heart of the village, had walls designed to deter untrained intruders or wandering villagers. For the pair, however, the barriers were no more than a minor inconvenience—a slight hiccup in an otherwise straightforward plan. With practiced ease, Tōga scaled the wall, his movements smooth and confident, while Strigr followed, her agility making the climb appear effortless. In mere moments, they perched atop the stone barrier, gazing down into the courtyard below.

What greeted them was anything but welcoming. The center of the settlement was alive with activity, though not the kind one would expect from a peaceful village. Rows of armaments glinted in the torchlight—cannon barrels, piles of swords, shields neatly stacked, and racks of polished armor. At least a dozen men and women, clad in simple yet functional attire, bustled about, taking inventory with a methodical precision that hinted at an organized operation.

Tōga let out a low whistle, his pink brows arching in mock admiration. “Well, well, Strigr-chan, looks like these folks have been busy. I thought we were dealing with a rebellion in its early stages, but this...this feels a little too polished, doesn’t it?” Strigr’s eyes narrowed, her sharp gaze taking in every detail. The individuals moving about weren’t seasoned warriors. Their stances were too stiff, their hands too careful as they handled the weapons. These were people of intellect—diplomats, scholars, perhaps merchants—forced into a role they weren’t suited for. Yet their determination was palpable, their movements fueled by a purpose they clearly believed in.

They’re not warriors,” Strigr said, her voice barely above a whisper. “They’re trying to be, but this isn’t their arena. Still, that doesn’t make them any less dangerous.”

Tōga nodded, his grin slipping into something more serious. “True enough. Desperation makes people do crazy things. So, what’s the plan? Talk them down or...?

Strigr’s tail swished as she considered their options. “We’ll give them a chance to stand down,” she said firmly. “If they refuse, we’ll dismantle their operation. Quickly and cleanly.

Right, quick and clean,” Tōga echoed, cracking his knuckles. “Subtle as always.”

Before Strigr could roll her eyes at his cavalier tone, Tōga leapt down into the courtyard, landing with a grace that belied his brashness. Strigr followed, her movements as precise and calculated as ever. Their sudden appearance caught the attention of the group, and the murmur of activity stilled as all eyes turned toward the intruders.

Oi!” Tōga called out, raising a hand in an exaggerated wave. “Sorry to interrupt your little inventory session, but we’ve got a small problem here. You see, we can’t exactly let you march off and start a war.”

The leader of the group, a tall man with a scholar’s build and a diplomat’s poise, stepped forward, his face hardening. “Who are you to tell us what we can or cannot do? This is our home, and we’ll fight for it if we must.” Strigr stepped beside Tōga, her voice calm but unyielding. “No one here wants another war. We understand your grievances, but this path will only lead to more bloodshed—and not just yours.

The man hesitated, but before he could reply, one of his compatriots lunged forward, sword raised. It was a move born of fear and frustration rather than skill. Tōga intercepted effortlessly, disarming the attacker with a swift motion and sending him sprawling.

Alright,” Tōga said, his tone suddenly sharper. “We gave you the chance to talk. Now it’s time to wrap this up.” What followed was a brief but decisive clash. The twelve rebels, though earnest, were no match for the duo. Strigr moved with the elegance of a dancer, disarming and incapacitating her opponents with precision. Tōga, meanwhile, was a whirlwind of strength and speed, subduing the group without breaking a sweat.

When the dust settled, the would-be rebels lay defeated, their weapons scattered and their plans in ruins. Tōga dusted off his hands, glancing over at Strigr. “Not exactly subtle, but effective. Think they’ve learned their lesson?” Strigr knelt beside the leader, her gaze steady. “This doesn’t have to end here. Use your intellect and influence to rebuild, not destroy. The people need hope, not more war.” The man nodded slowly, the fight drained from him. As Tōga and Strigr turned to leave, the tension in the air began to dissipate, replaced by a fragile sense of resolution.
