She wondered sometimes where most of those people went. They must have either retired, or straight up died. People changed their body so often magic would lose them if they really wanted to be lost. If they wanted to leave it all behind, they could. But could she ever do that? She still had her goal of finding her wife, though maybe if Kanya wanted to be found she would have already shown up. At least in their absence the furniture they built years ago still held up. It was more than enough reason to defend this place. They took care of them, and they repaid in kind. She let her mind wander until-
"Wait wait, four hundred and ninety nine?!" That made her unit 500. Or at least, that was what she would assume. Though, the number two on her side would answer otherwise. That meant that the project itself was roughly the same age as her. The only question she had was what were the designs for the prototype? What was Unit One like?
There was so many questions, and most of the answers she sought were most likely lost with the manufacturer. But nearly five hundred units seemed insane. It was certainly an army. She could see a single unit aiding in a small town by themselves, which meant that with that many, was it to ensure safety for an entire country?
Having a projection of a schematic, or at least a blueprint concept for another unit was fascinating to her. it wasn't like illusion magic was new to her, but having it presented in such a way was strange and exciting. She leaned a bit forward in her seat inspecting, trying to get any new information. All she could find was the designation, which the second having design information of the first seemed to make sense. It wasn't like they were going to update the files with every single creation. They could if they had some service acting as a hive mind, but all of them were independent.
She held her chin in though, mumbling the ideas to herself. "If you can be re-cased, then you could essentially treat the entire chassis as armor, meaning you could swap out your entire body." Requip was a choice, but knowing that fact opened up so many options, and so many stranger questions. "If, in theory you found the remnants of other designs, of which I assume were all granted the same magic, no one else could thieve from your collection, making you far more secure in battle..."
The sound of a plate being placed on the table would break her train of thought. For herself, a simple sandwich was placed, the inside of it a bunch of mixed and various meats. It would be most unappetizing to others, but to her it was a delicacy. She had gotten used to scraps from this inn mostly because she felt bad ordering the highest quality meats. To her, it was really all the same at the end of the day, especially when prime rib is dinner every other day. In front of Discovery would be placed a bowl filled with a dark brown liquid and a bunch of scraps placed inside of it. It was something she saw Zane have once. It was something he would consume, using the materials to repair his body from within. Nameless would assume it would work the same for her. Plus oil seemed a lot better than milk for Discovery.
"Ah, yes thank you." she would say to the waitress before trying to return to her path. "If you were all, the whole of Discovery Units, were all specialized for areas, that means you most likely would be placed and stationed in specific areas, rather than a general design for each city or town. . . " Climbing mountains, and for the sea? Those made hardly any use in an urban setting. Unless they were test units for something more-
"Oh my god," she lifted the sandwich to eat it, only to hold it before her. "No that doesn't make any sense. . . You were built to save people right? You're a rescue unit, not a retrieval unit, right?"
If they were all made with a similar mindset, then wouldn't it make the most sense for them to be sent in groups? If one fell, the others could scavenge the parts to give them more versatility. Their individuality meant they could assess threats and situations. Though with their magic, they easily could have been a single unit.
But if that was the goal, what was the reason for not doing that to begin with?
