Quest: What Lies Beneath

Summary: Ever since the Haunted Lands of Phantom Lord were closed, there has been talk of menacing spirits lying underneath the Oakland Church. Phantoms and specters who had been sealed beneath the church by the guild are now roaming the catacombs. Some of them are evil spirits, who wish harm on any who dare approach them, but some are civil and hope their final wishes can be completed so they may pass on peacefully. All spirits can be destroyed, and all can be saved, so long as they are removed from beneath the church, you will be rewarded.

Ghosts. Spirits. Phantoms. Specters. Familiar terms for familiar problems. To her, they were once prestigious titles held by some of the strongest mages. Today, they were the foes of tonight. But she was more concerned with a more serious threat, being awake.

She stood in the cold, her eyes half open and her hair unbrushed, a warm cup in her hands as she stared at the man with a dead expression. She might have dressed cute for the occasion, but it was only because she had prepared the outfit a week ago for another event.

"Okay okay, so you want me to kill all of the ghosts?" she asked again, "Because it sounds like you want them exorcized, with magic. You know that usually kills them, right?" She could barely keep her eyes open as she looked at the man. His coat seemed as long as hers was. Though, now that she really got a good look at him, seemed more like a dress. A robe? Right, he was probably a priest, or at least a minister. After all, this was under their church.

"I don't care how you do it, I need them gone! They're disruptive and some are getting violent! Please you must-" his words were cut short when her finger was laid upon his lips to silence him. The woman nodded disapprovingly.

"Shhh... its too early to be yelling. I'll take care of the spirits as long as you're paying, right?"

"New Lifeforms registered... Social interaction imminent!"

Of all the places for her to start her search, oak was the most sound. It had a colorful history and she felt that maybe one of the other units would be drawn to it the same way that she was. The behemoth of a machia was looked at fairly strangely, people were nervous around her. Even with her friendly demeanor and honest answers regarding her intents people were slow to trust and why shouldn’t they be?

The whirrs of her servos were quiet and were hidden well by the heavy rumbling footfalls that came alongside her. Even with it being winter she was vastly unaffected by the cold; only registering that it was at a sub optimal temperature for standard organic life. She’d curiously catch some of the falling snow in a hand as she walked; the townsfolk had directed her to the church after some inquiries regarding other versions of her. People would have reacted differently if she wasn’t the first one to come around but in this case they felt the need to point her to the local clergy.

Getting closer to the church she could hear a myriad of voices from within; large ears flicking this way or that to help catch the acoustics. She wasn’t able to pick voices apart yet with this current level of internal programs and equipment but she could detect high octaves with low octaves indicating conversations. Two knocks on the door and she was let in much to the surprise of the one watching the door.

Hello! I was pointed to place of worship by the townfolk. The clergy here is supposedly knowledgeable. Is your leader present? I have some questions for him.

The clergyman pointed to a set of stairs near the back that led down, she’d thank the man with a polite bow; something she picked up by a very handy butler. The large aquatic machia headed down the stairs, having to retract her neck a bit and scrunch her legs together to even fit down the staircase. Some ceilings just weren’t meant for people of her size.

The heavy thuds of her footsteps were the first thing to announce her presence, the next was a long thin blackened synthflesh arm before the rest of her body came. The detached nature of her should let her squeeze into places a little easier thankfully and the next thing to peek around would be her head. The optics registered two people in front of her; the faceplate lighting up somewhat as she noted the clergyman with a robe and a well dressed… Demi-human? Her registration protocol had a source mismatch and she couldn’t exactly tell what she was looking at.

Hello! I was looking for the lead clergyman. I was informed they would be down here.

There was a brief pause as she looked the both of them up and down. She seemed enthused to meet more people; it was kind of just the way she was. Noting that something was amiss she’d begin her greetings protocol; though there was a tint of shyness to her voice as she still wasn’t sure if this was the right way of greeting someone.

My designation is DSK-0vRI but you may call me Discovery. Do you require assistance?

It was the same problems, different people, different day. There was the usual suspects but it was always some dumb shit they called a mage for. Who really cared at the end of the day, paid escort, bodyguard, for a merchant or a fisherman, as long as they paid.

The heavy steps was what caused her to look behind her. It wasn't the first time she had seen a machia, or some other tech based humanoid, but it certainly was the first time she saw something like, well Discovery. it wasn't like she saw them as something other than people, but haven't been so accustomed to them serving some greater power, be it their creator or whoever they worked for, she was weird about it. Maybe it was no different than one's desire to help their parent or do their job duties, but really it was not something she thought about. She turned to the man, lifting a finger to point at Discovery.

"Bro you hired a fucking robot to help me? Do you know who I am? I used to exorci-" She waved the idea before gesturing the man to take his leave. There was nothing he could say right now that would change anything, unless it was a secret to get rid of the ghosts. Though, if a secret existed, they would have done it without her help.

"Alright Disco, are you here to help assist me on sending spirits off, or are you one of those zealot bots? I mean it's totally cool if you are, but it'd be a damn shame." She cocked her hip to the side her hand placed on it as she looked at her newest co-worker.

"if you could-"

"If it isn't going to help me do what you're going to totally pay me for right now, it can wait until after."

She, really, really didn't like old men.

"Time to find out who's who..."

Discovery’s eyes traced over the two again; she had never met either of them for certain but there was a sort of familiarity regarding the both of them she couldn’t place. Perhaps one of them was famous? Her databanks didn’t show any prior files regarding either. It was a puzzling conundrum and she’d tilt her head to one side in befuddlement. Her accusation of the man hiring her was largely unfounded and she’d shake her head as she stepped out fully from the staircase; her neck extending and she's straighten out; thankful for the height of the ceiling being… well generous to say the least. Her eyes scanned the area and her ‘brows’ furrowed slightly.

I am currently not under employment of anyone other than Paradise dawn, no local or current subsidiary has reached out for my services. Does someone require rescue? I do not recognize you Ma’am; but on the mainland of Fiore I am unfamiliar with many individuals. Such as the clergyman you are speaking to.

While the question was pointed at the older man; discovery felt like she had to clarify that she had no idea who this… Demi-human? Was? Her files were not registering them as one and it was making her a little confused, scratching at the side of her head she moved quite similarly to someone that was actually alive. With the questions posed to her, the Machia’s eyes would flash as though registering something and a brief loading symbol emerged on her faceplate.

If you require assistance in dealing with spirits I can do so. It may not be my primary function but I’ll try. I am not a zealot bot; I was designed by another Machia by the name of Ossji and he was a military contractor out of Talaz Lagaar. My primary function is Rescue operations.

Discovery approached the both of them, towering over them by several feet. Offering a hand to Yukirochisu. She didn’t seem bothered by the attitude that she was putting out nor the hostility towards the older man. Or frustration. It was hard to tell for her.

Disco is an appropriate shortening of my designation. I am more than willing to assist you Ma’am. May I ask your name?

Her voice was rather positive, upbeat and certainly held in confidence that she could assist Yukirochisu. Though she had to wonder how effective she’d be against Ghosts or spirits. She knew some of the military units could deal with them. Maybe brute force would be fine? Magic was weird after all.

It was like a large oversized puppy. At least one that could speak. It was nothing like Zane, or Geb, or any of the others she had enough time to really look up close. Perhaps something newer? More modern and streamlined? It wasn't like she was an expert on any of them. Soldering wires together and using the magic of healing to put them back together hardly made her an engineer. They made no sense to her, though it wasn't like you could arrange body parts together and make a brand new person. But it wasn't until this moment that she even considered the question of if they had souls like other living beings.

"Who the fuck is Paradise Dawn?" she wondered to herself, assuming it had to be a new group, guild or agency. It was expected that they weren't exactly free roam. Everyone served someone else. It was just how this world was. Even she was a servant of Phantom Lord. . . though to its original ideals. The more it explained itself, the less she begun to understood. A bot built by a bot? Rescue? All she grasped was it was here to help. Surely that counted for something.

"I don't have one." she answered. She waved a hand to the old man and turned to made her way into the catacombs. "Everyone refers to me as Nameless, so you can do that, or whatever else you want to call me, it doesn't matter." She walked down into the darkness, her hands in her pockets as she set on yet another exorcism excursion.

"Come Disco, we can walk and talk, and if you have magic we can both shoot some spirits." Right, no, that would only piss them off more. But some were beyond saving. Reaching into her bag she shuffled around all of the sorts of colored gems and rocks, looking for the few things that could help them.

"Hey Disco, you can eat, right?" A science experiment, though, it wasn't like it mattered. Magic was weird.

"Not quite a Ghostbuster..."

The rescue bot stood there in abject silence, looking down at her hand and then sort of letting it fall back down to her side. Maybe many people didn’t do the whole handshake protocol anymore? It was something she noticed from multiple individuals, though with Lady Lumikki that was more a safety thing for people. She didn’t seem bothered by it and would just simply have to adjust her greeting parameters for people based on their own initiatives. The answer to her question brought a bit of surprise to Discovery’s faceplate. The display flashing evident confusion for all of a moment.

Designation Nameless? Fascinating. I will log that in my databanks for future use. Perhaps a shortening would be in order in times of duress.

She’d follow after them, politely waving to the clergyman who looked somewhat aghast that she was even here. Her mission parameters had changed slightly and maybe this would be a good way of exploring another location. No one here seemed to have seen another variation of her; otherwise there would be less surprise.

That seems an efficient use of our time. I have a magic, but it doesn’t come with a typical offensive allotment. I can copy equipment variables from others and use them at a lower statistical spread. I do believe that I can still physically affect ghosts or spirits though if I increase my magicule density in my arms.

It’d be draining for sure if she did but her internal generators and external ways of replenishment would just mean she’d need to enter power saver mode later or just sit in the sun for a little bit. One of her ears flicked at the query directed at her.

I do not require nourishment but I can process food into its core components and turn it into fuel if needed.

It was stated very manner-a-factly and discovery didn’t seem bothered by her lack of apparent tastebuds either. She didn’t need it because that would just slow her down; she adjusted her stature after a moment and peered into the darkness. She didn’t register any strange activity but if ghosts and spirits were around they hardly would play fair from what her databanks were saying.

What of you nameless? Do you eat?

She knew most organics required it to live but she also knew that there were outliers such as vampires or liches. Though in the lattermost case they didn’t even have skin half the time. Or flesh to speak of. Much like the ghosts or spirits there were here to deal with.

"Namey. Name. Both work the same. Its also just the two of us, so its not like we need full sentences." They were certainly weird. Whatever it was. She had never seen any of them build like that, though it wasn't like she really knew anything about Talaz Lagaar outside of a few pages out of a book.

"Oh good, the day I don't bring weapons is the one day it actually would benefit me." It wasn't often she used swords. They were slow, clunky, at least the big ones. She found her fists and feet hit just as hard. Though, if their magic was mostly useless at the moment, the least she could do is offer them at least a bit of help. If it was pointless, then no magic wasted. All she needed to hear was the last bit, and knowing food was fuel she turned, walking backwards for a moment. She opened her palm to conjure a muffin before lightly tossing it to them. After the first, would come another.

"Eat up then. Should help for a while." She smiled, "Yeah, I eat. But eating my own magic is pointless, most of the time at least." What a strange question. It had to be freshly assembled, or at least built in a way that had little to no interaction. That meant it at least had some free will, or some programming that allowed it to learn. So, was it new? Did that make it a child?

The sounds of their steps seemed to echo in the dark halls of the catacombs. Spirits could have came at any moment, though it was more than likely that the priests either kept the ones at the end away, or the ghosts were resting for the time being. Might as well make use of the silence. "Hey Disco, how old are you? And uh, what are your pronouns?"

Man this was awkward.

"Muffins! My favorite breakfast food!"

I understand.

Discovery nodded her head a bit; she hadn’t been programmed with some typical know how about social events. She was after all only ever considered for rescue operations. Social affairs were meant for those in the advertisement or diplomatic sectors. Or even the triage machia she had seen before being sealed into her pod. She’d cock her head to one side as the other seemed to be frustrated with the lack of equipment.

There’s no way you could have known. My arrival after all to Oak was not a part of any local itinerary.

Discovery hoped that Nameless would at least be able to move past that; she figured the frustration was temporary anyways. When the other started walking backwards however discovery’s steps became a little shorter so she was to not overtake or accidentally walk over them. She had that problem of bumping into people if she wasn’t paying attention and when you weighed several tons well…

Thank you, your assistance is appreciated. Hmm. Maybe then after the spirits or ghosts are dealt with you should consider acquiring sustenance?

Discovery would take both muffins, her faceplate opened up and both muffins would be placed in side, once her faceplate closed a whirring sound would start up and the machia’s throat would should a slight change in mass before her chest lit up as the magicules from the muffins assisted her. Much thought had clearly been put into her by whoever this Ossji was.

My physical body is composed of physical material that was constructed within the last year or so. My programming or as most organics would consider my ‘brain’ would have been put into service thirty-four years ago. It has been updated every year with new rescue operational data. As for pronouns: She or her will suffice. What about you nameless?

Discovery being about that age mentally but having next to no social contact for three or so decades while also being locked away as an artificial intelligence would make it easy for her not to understand social venues and focus purely on her mission. The large bot adjusted a bit and noted that their parameters for their strength had changed.

Interesting. Your muffins are affecting my physical statistics in a positive manner. Was that what you meant by ‘help’?

Discovery was a curious ‘little’ machia; she had a lot of questions and didn’t seem at all opposed to answering any for those that had some for her. There would of course be some difficulties as there were certain things she couldn’t answer. The machia considered something briefly before inquiring.

My magic is typically referred to as ‘Requip’. I have yet to run into someone that could conjure or create food. What is your magic called?

She was still scanning this way or that for the spirits; they had not run into one yet and the machia didn’t seem terribly bothered by this fact. Though she knew that if they didn’t run into one… they’d likely be deeper; which was good because Discovery wanted to locate additional units.

People only knew what they were taught. You could only speak a language you heard or read. You could only preform behaviors once you learned about them. Sure you could dance around theoreticals all day, but dreaming about being a sword fighter hardly made you a master.

Watching them consume the muffins was strange, though it was more for her own curiosity. She knew if anyone focused onto the muffin they could just dissolve it into mana to be consumed for the same affect. But watching people eat strange flavors was half the fun.

"Ah, ladybot. Same Disco. We're just two girls trying to help old priests solve their spirit problems." Thirty years? So she had been locked away, no wonder her skills were so tender. She must have been itching for interaction, or at least if she was able to? If her body was that new, maybe it really was like bringing someone to life. They had to take in all of the world with a fresh pair of eyes, regardless of what memories or ideas were already part of their brain. Though there had to be some period of adjustment to get, or rather gather one's thoughts.

"My actual magic is known as Spirit of The Samurai, which is typically why I take on these jobs. I have a history of doing it. Though, I've undergone an update, so you'd get to know it as Muffin-make." Requip was expensive. Just to learn the magic could cost a fortune, if not years of study. That was saying without all of the gear you would have to forge yourself or search the world to find some lost relic. It helped to know a good merchant or treasure hunter, but it was no magic to write off. Whoever built that robot definitely cared. But ReQuip for a support unit? Something didn't add up.

"Ah, a samurai. Those were the days!" a chilling voice heard, but rather than coming from down the dark hallways, it seemed to come from the walls itself. She stopped to try to track it, only for the face of spirit to phase through it, and look upon her. He looked like an old man, a toothless smile and bald head as he looked over the neko. "I was quite the swordsman in my days!"

"Yeah yeah whatever. Are you fuckin' with the church?" she wasted no time in confronting the spirit. She rolled her shoulders, her back cracking as she was ready to start fighting.

"Oh-ohoho! Not I!" The creepy spirit smiled, looking over the both of them. "I was simply drawn to the sweet voices of such fine ladies~!"

"Okay, well you can follow us, just don't get in my way unless you wanna turn into specter dust. I can't say how accurate my spells can be if I gotta shoot someone behind you." She turned to check on Discovery before continuing down the path, taking whichever was easiest to walk. If it was able to fit the both of them, then it was more than likely the path the priests took, which meant it was probably where more spirits were.

That is correct. Though I am unsure of the seriousness of this request. I haven’t seen any spirits as of yet.

Discovery frowned slightly; her eyes slanting as a set of eyebrows took up some of her digital faceplate. Even then she had to wonder further if it was serious if they had just simply missed the problem entirely or if they hadn’t gone deep enough yet. There was a long list of instances where that would be the case. She looked quizically at Nameless as they answered her question; Spirit of the samurai that had updated into… Muffin make. The machia looked positively confused for a moment.

That is not an update I would have expected to hear, but the magic itself seems to be of great use and value if it can help others. You’d make for good support for any military or rescue operation.

From discovery it was definitely meant as a compliment, even the smile that was paired with it indicated that. However the moment the chilling voice sounded her expression dimmed and returned to a neutral one. Eyes scanning and eventually her head cranked to see the spirit phasing through the wall. Though Nameless spoke to it first; meaning that Discovery wouldn’t have to try to punch it; they had the option of just talking them down right?

I am unsure if we should trust him, his reasoning is unconvincing and suspicious. But if he’s not harmful I suppose there is no issue with him following us.

Discovery stared at the spirit for a few moments as it also seemed like the spirit wasn’t with the church. Being a swordsman likely wasn’t that impressive for spirits right? Or was that just something commonplace? She had questions but they were better asked of the living than the dead. Nameless had a decent point about that and Discovery would take that into account, being machia meant she could bend in strange ways so if they had to shoot someone behind her… well she could likely just adjust out of the way.

She’d pad after Nameless, giving a somewhat cheerful smile to them when they turned to check on them. The ceiling was vaulted enough in some paths for her to walk it without issue, some would require her to retract her neck and even duck through doorways. Eventually Discovery asked another question; with the way that the other held themselves she figured the answer was yes but you never knew.

Have you done this sort of work before?

Simply put, men were stupid. Old men, were worse. Who knows how bad it really was down there. Maybe it was the ghost of someone who just wasn't religious, or they just didn't like the sounds of their sermons.

"It's a lot easier than Art of War, at least." Muffin Make certainly was a strange change, but when you called upon the spirits of so many grandmothers, to have them privately bake you so many treats, it wasn't too far off. The muffins came in handy, plus they made it easy to show off for the children. It didn't matter how scary things got, the people were still people. And even if she hated them, she wanted to leave behind a positive lasting effect on the next generation. After all, they could end up being her next guildmaster.

She was always used to playing support. Healer. Enchanter. Observer. She was incharge of watching from a safe distance and making sure everyone made it back home alive. Injuries were debatable considering she could mostly tend to any wound with a matter of time. As far as military, the idea of being a Rune Knight sent a shiver down her spine.

She waved off Discovery's suspicions for the time being. "Creepy old men who haven't gotten action since death, and probably not much more when alive." With the question she quickly went to answer, only to first glare at the spirit to make him move a little further to the side of her.

"Yeah, in Oak and in Dahlia, I made a lot of money dealing with spirits. These catacombs have been fucked for years. It leads all sorts of places. Sometimes the poor will drop off their family here rather than burying because its easier. Other gangs or criminals will drop them down a few levels below. That's where you'll get vengeance spirits. And, I'm sure you'll be happy to know." She leaned her head back, tilting a bit to see if there was a change in expression. "The ceilings are typically much taller down there, might even give you enough room to jump too."

"Well that's true! We can see you in all of your glory, Miss Disco!" the spirit continued to float along side Nameless, his glowing spiritual essence lighting the way if even slightly. It wasn't enough to really show much, but it was better than the candles that flickered few and far between.

"Yeah. Usually the larger areas are left open because of much more dangerous spirits, that or things laid to rest that aren't human, like vampires. Humans are scared of them rising, so they'll get weird cave like areas that are really open for whatever reason." Bodies were stacked high, and few without purpose. The smell of rot and decay she was used to, even before she used to feast on flesh. But something didn't feel quite right.

"Hey Discovery, are you like, comfortable as you are?" She couldn't hold in the question. She needed to know. "Most machina or machia are at least clothed. You're like the second one I've seen that didn't at least wear pants."

Yeah, only the important questions.

"Swords, Muffins and Spirits oh my!"

I can only imagine; My expertise isn’t exactly focused on Magics.

Discovery’s expression shifted to indifference on the topic; though she had to wonder what sort of weaponry muffin make could… well make. Or what offensive qualities it’d have to something that was of war of all things. The Machia however tilted her head to one side as Nameless waved off her suspicions. Not literally at least.

I mean as a spirit it would be understandable that he wouldn’t be able to fight. Are organics hardlined for conflict that they need it so badly even after death?

She understandably didn’t get what the other was talking about; missing the point entirely and hearing that she had made money off of the catacombs and their problems didn’t surprise Discovery all too much. People had to survive or eat and… Well? She’d give a small shrug. Hearing that the ceilings would be a little higher the deeper they went made Discovery’s expression flicker to that of relief. Scrunching her neck was making it hard to fully survey the area as they went.

Then you are well experienced in this; I will defer to your judgement regarding spirits and the like. Though jumping may not be a wise idea, I wouldn’t want to crash through the floor if any structural integrity may be compromised.

She’d ponder the information regarding all the people that would dump bodies here; she wasn’t sure what to make of it. Organics were strange to her still even though she worked for one; hell that one was a Demon of all things. She didn’t pay the spirit any real mind; not sure why he focused on that of all things.

Then if there’s a larger area that means that there would be a larger concentration of spirits or a more dangerous one. I would like to handle them swiftly and not let them get too worked up. Any idea how far away we are from them?

Discovery’s ‘brows’ furrowed at the following question. Comfortable? She’d look down at herself, looking a bit puzzled at the inquiry. She’d motion to herself and give a small shrug. Honestly she hadn’t even thought about it.

My models typically don’t wear clothing, I am a rescue model made for underwater rescue typically and clothing can create drag. I never really considered wearing clothing other than the synthweave apparel that I currently am. I have not met another machia outside of the other DSK-0vRI ones. THough Many of them were in stasis or pods so I believe they hardly count.

Discovery’s attention was focused hard on the spirit that was following them around; she still didn’t quite trust him…

She would have preferred a battle, though, sometimes an easy day was a gift is disguise. Any day her magic was even slightly useful was a good day. Part of her wished she could relearn all of those lost traditions, but even she knew it was a futile attempt. It was nothing more than a grasp at short straws. The fact she even retained a semblance of what it used to be was enough for her. Spiritual Muffins? Maybe. But that was a discovery for another day.

"Not all. But I've fought more wars than a family might see in generations." She was geared for war, at least in mindset. It was ingrained in her instinct. A calm day may have been a time to relax, but she really never could. Any ally could turn on you. Any friends could be a double agent. It wasn't to say she was overtly paranoid about those around her, waiting for the craziest of conspiracies. However, finding her guildmaster's brother had sent people to kill her, and to have him shrug off the idea wasn't something that helped her sleep at night. Sibling rivalry? Sure. But why was she always caught in the middle of it, even long after their funeral?

"Yeah, well, somehow I doubt today we'll fight a fight for mages." She removed the bag slung around her shoulder for a moment as she pulled an arm out of her large coat. It wasn't long until her purple turtle neck was what covered her arms, though the sleeves a bit tighter than they normally should have been. She stopped for a moment, trying to hand Discovery her coat.

"Here's my guess. Given that this old man wasn't asking for help, means that whatever dangerous spirits, if any, are gone by now. They're resting, which means we can't find them until they're riled again. My assumption is we're going to run into a mass of elderly spirits, which means men who will oogle and stare at you, regardless of your nature." She sighed, hoping she was wrong and it was a big demon for once. "So, any exposed chest is going to get us stuck here for hours if that's the case. If not, then we blow up whatever demon, and go home." She really would have rather fought a demon. Punching things to undeath was always so much easier.

"Aw well she doesn't have to do that! It's not like robots need clothing, she even said so!"

"Oh god, we really are going to be dealing with a bunch of old men spirits aren't we."

"No! . . there is women too! Though none of them as young as you two~!"

The sound of her palm hitting her face would echo the mostly silent halls for a moment as she was faced with the truth of their mission. There was no escaping this. She was going to have to listen to a bunch of long passed grandmas tell them stories, and grandpas get way too close. Though, with two people to tell stories to, maybe they could get out in under an hour.

Seems like a challenge.

"Swords, Muffins and Spirits oh my!"

Curious. Is fiore really that war torn that people see multiple wars? I was of understanding it was sparse in this region.

Discovery’s brows furrowed together and she’d have to take a moment to consider the words that the other spoke. If that truly was the case then she was seriously behind on history and her lack of connection to the central hub out of her homeland was severely detrimental. It felt like she was missing a guiding hand somehow. It also felt like she didn’t know that many people here either. Something she’d have to change.

I understand.

Discovery blinked a bit as the other handed her the coat. She’d stare down at it and flick her ears at the notion of them staring at her. Something she didn’t quite understand. What was there to stare at? Was there something strange about her? Nothing quite clicked but if she was being handed the coat she might as well wear it. Though it’d be a little tight at the shoulders and wouldn’t quite fit the whole way that was fine. She still appreciate the sentiment.

I still do not fully understand but if the staring is detrimental and the ‘oogling’ is problematic maybe I should look for some kind of clothing while on land. If there is a demon here however I would be woefully underequipped. I think I am still missing understanding of social structure and perhaps that is why the clergyman was staring at me too. Hmm.

Discovery seemed a little bit out of sorts, not quite understanding what Nameless was getting at. She was definitely behind on social aspects and the man seemed to be against what the other woman was suggesting meant that… Well that one was certainly more trustworthy than the other and it certainly wasn’t the spirit.

So no demon, just a bunch of older spirits that… Well if they’re noncombative then at least they’ll be peaceful. So speaking to them should yield some kind of positive result correct?

Discovery had to wonder what the spirits would want and at the end of it all would probably come away with some good advice. If the ghosts or spirits were even keen on sharing that sort of thing. She seemed relieved at the idea that she didn’t have to fight something and instead had learned more about the city. Though she did seem extremely disappointed she didn’t find any of her other units but… What can you do there?

"It used to be." She had been at most of them, with a few missed. She wanted this country to be better, to be different. Those knights never cared about people, they cared about feeling like they were helpful. The second they were out of sight, the common people were forgotten. Why spent the month helping your average family when every day some orphan was dying in the slums? There was always someone else to help, there was always someone else more in need. You can't save them all, but why focus on just making people who have uncomfortable lives happy, when you can really actually save someone from dying? That was the reason she hated the capital. That was the reason she stuck to Phantom Lord. But with the current state of things, even that seemed to have changed.

"Women aren't supposed to walk around bare chested, at least in civilization as we know it. If you're female, men will be weird. Besides you should get used to it if you have Re-Quip magic. Soon it'll be plate mail instead of cotton."

Just moments later the pair would find themselves in a much more open corridor. It was far from a demon killing arena.

"Oh a visitor! Look at the tall one with her cute jacket!"

"Oh my guests! My my, they could tell us who's right!"

"Nah, fuck you Steve, Fairy Tail is still the strongest guild in all of Fiore!"

Nameless took a deep breath and crossed the threshold with her eyes closed. Her arms were out, simply trying to feel the mana in the air. As long as it was only these spirits, they would be fine. It was a matter of time, and concentration, not power or skill.

"Sometimes when people die, they have final thoughts they didn't get to share. Sometimes it's a different kind of unfinished business." the old man spirit that had followed them seemed to remain still, watching with a smile. The rest seemed to slowly make their way towards Nameless. "Sometimes all it takes to bring peace to the mortal soul, is someone to hear their tales."

So, the pair would have to sit down and listen to all of the spirits. They would spend the entire evening if that was what it took.

Everyone deserved to go in peace.
