Tsukishima Higurashi
The night had fallen once again, blanketing the city of Magnolia in an air of quiet anticipation. The streets, though deserted to most, still buzzed with a sense of tension beneath the surface. Tsukishima found himself once more called to action. The merchants of Magnolia, particularly those dealing in rare and magical goods, were under siege by a new wave of thugs demanding "protection" payments. The once-bustling shops, now shadows of their former selves, were filled with broken spirits. Merchants once again cowed into submission by the relentless threats and intimidation. Desperate for relief, they had once again sought out Tsukishima for assistance. For Tsukishima, there was no need for sentimentality. The notion of justice or altruism didn’t motivate him. This was about coming one step closer to the goal. One step closer to the only thing that drove him. Tonight, his prey would be a band of petty thugs too arrogant to fear the consequences of their actions. They had chosen their mark well, and Tsukishima knew exactly where they would strike.

He had settled in at the latest shop to fall victim to this wave of extortion; an unassuming establishment tucked away in a quiet corner of the market district. It specialized in rare herbs and potions, its shelves stocked with mysterious vials and bundles of dried flora. The air was thick with the scent of bitter herbs and the faintest trace of arcane energy. The shop, dimly lit by a few flickering candles, appeared abandoned, though the faint shadows of unease hung in the air. The shopkeeper closed the establishment, allowing Tsukishima inside before he departed.

Tsukishima had waited for the right moment, slipping into the shadows with ease, his form melting into the night. His eyes took in every detail of the room; the soft rustle of dried leaves in the distance, the gentle sway of the flickering light, the distant sounds of footsteps outside that signaled the approach of his targets. Tsukishima’s body was poised, a coiled spring of patience and precision. He was content to wait, knowing that the thugs would come, and when they did, they would find a predator far more dangerous than they had bargained for.

The faint sound of boots scraping against the cobblestones echoed in the stillness of the shop. Tsukishima’s senses, honed over years, picked up on the approaching footsteps long before they reached the door. His prey was predictable; foolish enough to assume they could intimidate the city’s merchants without consequence. It was a mistake they would soon regret. He didn’t have to wait long. The door creaked open, and three figures stepped inside, their heavy boots thudding against the wooden floor as they surveyed the dimly lit interior. Their hands instinctively reached for their weapons, ready to subjugate anyone foolish enough to resist. The leader of the group, a thick-set man with a cruel grin etched onto his face, stepped forward, eyes glinting with malice.

In one swift motion, he swept his arm across a nearby shelf, sending bottles of potions and vials of enchanted powders crashing to the floor. The liquid inside splashed in all directions, the pungent odor filling the air. “Trash the place.” the thug sneered, his voice dripping with arrogance. The thugs' laughter rang out, mocking and cruel, as they began ransacking the shop. Drawers were torn open, shelves ransacked, and fragile bottles of rare elixirs were sent careening to the ground, shattering upon impact. A few spilled liquids hissed as they made contact with the stone floor, but the thugs paid no mind, too caught up in their loot to care.

They hadn’t noticed Tsukishima yet, but he had noticed them. He watched with cold detachment as they destroyed the shop, his sharp eyes calculating, already anticipating their every move. It wouldn't be long before they realized their mistake. His body was a coiled spring, ready to strike. As the last of the three thugs turned his back to the room, Tsukishima moved. He was silent, his steps barely making a sound as he closed the distance between himself and the nearest man. The first thug to realize something was wrong was the one closest to the counter. He spun around, his eyes narrowing as he instinctively reached for the dagger at his belt. But before he could draw it, Tsukishima was already there. A blur of motion, a fist that struck with the force of a hammer. The thug’s head snapped back with a sickening thud, and his body collapsed to the ground in a heap, unconscious before he could even register the pain.

The other two men turned at the sound, eyes widening in alarm. One of them drew his sword with a curse, but Tsukishima was already moving again. His movements were too quick, too fluid to track. He was a phantom in the night, his strikes precise and devastating. The second thug swung his blade wildly, but Tsukishima’s fist met his jaw with brutal force, sending him reeling backward, his weapon clattering to the ground. The third thug, seeing his companions fall like ragdolls, made a desperate attempt to flee, but Tsukishima was faster.

He grabbed the man by the collar, lifting him off the ground with terrifying ease. “Pathetic.” he muttered as he delivered a swift blow, knocking the man out cold. As the man crumpled to the ground, Tsukishima felt a surge of magic as a pulse of light exploded into the shop, searing the air around him. From the shadows of the street, a figure stepped into the doorway. A man clad in shining armor, with a holy symbol emblazoned across his chest, his eyes narrowed in cold fury. His sword gleamed in the dim light, as he raised it high, channeling light magic with a fervor that made the air crackle.

I know what you are, vampire.” the man said, his voice filled with righteous anger. “A creature of darkness terrified of the light. I will make you pay for what you did to him.” Tsukishima’s eyes flashed with confusion then recognition. This was no ordinary thug. This man was a paladin, one who seemed to have the power of light magic. His face seemed foreign to him and yet familiar as well.

A second passed before Tsukishima remembered the terror etched on the face of the cowardly thug he drained during his first trip to Magnolia, noting the resemblance. “Ah. So you’re related?” he says coldly. The paladin’s gaze locked onto him, his stance aggressive, ready to strike. “So I assume you’ve been working with these idiot thugs in hopes I stop them and you have a chance at revenge? I’ll admit, I didn’t think his death would be such a tragedy to anyone. I also didn’t think the others would talk. Going to have to pay them a visit soon. What was he to you? Brother? Son? Lover?” The paladin’s eyes hardened. “You killed my brother, drained him of his life,” he spat. “I’ll make you pay for what you’ve done.” “You’ll try, I’m sure.

Without another word, the paladin surged forward, his movements swift and certain. The light surrounding him flared in a blinding brilliance, the air crackling with the force of his divine power. His sword, a gleaming beacon of radiant energy, arced through the air as he struck at Tsukishima, a flash of pure light exploding from the blade. Tsukishima’s instincts kicked in, but the speed of the paladin's assault left him little room to react. He had no choice but to absorb the blow head-on, the searing light engulfing him in an intense burst of heat. The force of the strike made his body shudder, a sharp, stinging sensation radiating through his being. For a brief moment, it felt as though his very being might be consumed by divine magic. The pain, though intense, was not enough to overwhelm him.

He smiled coldly, the edges of his lips curling in a knowing grin. This paladin’s arrogance would be his downfall. Tsukishima, ever the strategist, knew how to manipulate a situation. He took the next series of blows with deliberate calculation, allowing each strike to land with the force of the paladin's fury. The radiant light seemed to penetrate through his armor and char his skin, but Tsukishima showed no outward sign of the pain. He wanted the paladin to believe he was faltering, that the light was slowly sapping his strength. With each blow, the paladin’s confidence grew, and Tsukishima’s illusion took root.

His plan was simple: let the paladin expend his energy in a futile effort, tire him out, and then strike when the time was right. It was a game of patience, one Tsukishima was well-versed in. The paladin’s face twisted in fury, his anger growing with each blow that seemed to fall short of victory. With a roar, he raised his sword high, summoning all of his divine might. “Sunbeam!” he shouted, his voice shaking with the force of his determination. A blinding beam of golden light erupted from the tip of his sword, a concentrated blast of holy power that shot forward like a spear, engulfing Tsukishima completely.

The light tore through the air, a force so pure and potent that it left a trail of radiant fire in its wake. Tsukishima had no time to dodge; it was too fast, too overwhelming. He braced himself for the onslaught, his body locked in place as the beam consumed him. The impact was deafening. The force of the blast ripped through the shop like a storm, shattering windows and sending shards of glass and wood splintering into the air. Tsukishima was thrown back with brutal force, crashing through the back wall of the building. The sound of crumbling stone and splintering wood echoed through the streets, and for a moment, the shop was swallowed by silence.

The paladin stood in the doorway, chest heaving with exertion, his eyes gleaming with the fierce light of triumph. He stared at the cloud of dust and debris where Tsukishima had once stood, a victorious smile spreading across his face. “It’s over.” The thought echoed in his mind as he took a step forward, sure that he had destroyed the unholy entity once and for all. The paladin’s gaze lingered on the debris, confident that nothing could survive such a devastating attack. He had succeeded where others had failed. Tsukishima Higurashi was dead.

But as the dust began to settle, a faint, mocking laugh echoed from the wreckage. The paladin’s grin faltered, his heart skipping a beat. From the shadows, Tsukishima emerged, the fabric from his armor torn but his body otherwise unharmed. His crimson eyes glowed with an eerie, knowing light, the faintest smirk playing at the corners of his lips. The paladin's eyes widened in disbelief. "How...?" His voice faltered, the triumphant gleam fading as the reality of the situation began to sink in.

Tsukishima straightened, brushing off the debris with a fluid motion. "Did you really think a simple beam of light could kill me?" he said, his voice low and mocking, filled with an unmistakable edge of contempt. The paladin's sword, still crackling with divine energy, was raised once more; but now, it was the paladin who hesitated, the fear of his own hubris creeping into his chest. Tsukishima’s grin widened. Before he could react, Tsukishima moved with blinding speed, closing the distance between them in a heartbeat. Tsukishima’s movements were a blur, his body a shadow that danced around the paladin’s defenses with ease. The paladin’s body went limp as it skidded and bounced across the ground like a ball from Tsukishima’s kick.

The paladin, panicking as he lifted himself up, summoned the light again, raising his sword high for one final strike. “Sunbeam!” he cried, channeling his divine power. A brilliant beam of golden light erupted from the tip of his blade, slicing through the air with blinding intensity. It surged toward Tsukishima, intent on finishing what the previous blast had started. But Tsukishima was already ahead of him. With a casual flick of his wrist, he deflected the beam, his hand effortlessly redirecting the holy magic with a grace that seemed almost unnatural.

The magic twisted in the air, as if under his command, and with a sharp twist of his wrist, Tsukishima sent the spell hurtling back toward its source. The paladin’s eyes widened in horror as the beam of light veered off course, striking the ground at his feet, causing a massive explosion of radiant energy. The paladin staggered, disoriented by the force of his own magic, his sword slipping from his hand as he fell to his knees. In that moment of vulnerability, Tsukishima was upon him. He grabbed the paladin by the throat with terrifying strength, lifting him effortlessly off the ground. The paladin gasped, his breath coming in ragged, desperate pulls as Tsukishima’s grip tightened, cutting off his air supply. With a flick of his other hand, Tsukishima’s fangs elongated, and he sank them into the paladin’s neck, draining the man’s life force as easily as he had done to his brother before. The paladin’s body went limp, his attempts to struggle weak and futile. Tsukishima’s thirst was insatiable, but he knew when to stop.

Just before the paladin slipped into unconsciousness, Tsukishima pulled back, leaving the man barely alive. Just enough to keep him conscious but broken. His blood was rich, powerful, and Tsukishima savored every drop. The taste of it lingering on his tongue like fine wine. The paladin’s body dangled in Tsukishima’s grasp, his eyes fluttering as he struggled to remain conscious. With a swift motion, he tossed the paladin’s broken form aside and, without so much as a glance, turned his attention to the thugs. The three bandits lay unconscious in the shop, oblivious to the fate that had befallen their would-be savior. Tsukishima wasted no time. He gathered them up with ease, dragging them out of the ruined shop and towards the Rune Knights who had begun to approach. They had their bounty now, and Tsukishima had no interest in dragging things out any longer.

When he reached the Rune Knights, they barely spared a second glance at him. Their focus was on the thugs and not on the still, battered form of the hidden paladin. A few murmured words of thanks, a quick exchange of jewels, and Tsukishima was gone, vanishing into the shadows with his prize. He knew the paladin was broken, but there was more to be gained from him; more than just the satisfaction of watching him fall. “Seems fortune is on my side. Come. I have big plans for you, Paladin.” The words were barely a whisper as he melted into the night with the paladin draped across his shoulder.
