Tsukishima Higurashi
Tsukishima ventured deeper into Aldenwald as the dense fog thickened. It clung to his form like an unwelcome shroud. The uneasy silence of the forest was broken only by the occasional crack of a distant branch or the rustle of leaves as if the woods themselves whispered. The gnarled trees loomed overhead, their twisted branches curling and clawing at the air. It reached out like skeletal hands eager to snatch him away, hands Tsukishima was all too familiar with. A faint sound reached his ears; a skittering, just beyond the edge of visibility. He halted, every muscle on edge, his daggers gleaming faintly in the dim glow of the mist. The unnatural stirred around him, and soon, the shadows gave way to figures. Another pack of vampiric thralls emerged. Their eyes, feral and glinting with unholy hunger, fixed on him, and their crooked limbs moved with the disjointed rhythm of puppets bound by strings. A guttural snarl broke the tension and they advanced as one.

Tsukishima remained motionless, his calculating gaze tracking their movements. He let them come. When the first thrall lunged, its jagged claws aiming for his throat, he sprang into action. His main-hand dagger flashed in an arc, carving a deep gash across the creature’s torso. The blade’s slowing enchantment took immediate effect, the thrall’s erratic movements faltering as though time itself resisted it. It struggled with the new limitations imposed on its body and futility attempted to lash out. With a fluid motion, Tsukishima’s off-hand blade followed, plunging into the creature’s chest and siphoning the last dregs of its life. Another thrall darted from his flank, its guttural screech like nails dragged across stone. Tsukishima pivoted sharply, his dark armor emanating a faint, rippling miasma as he extended his hand outward. The noxious haze expanded outward, sapping the thrall’s strength mid-charge. Its swipe faltered, claws barely grazing his armor as Tsukishima’s dagger found its neck, severing its spine with surgical precision.

The remaining thralls hesitated briefly, their primal instincts warning them of their impending doom. Yet hunger and the dark will driving them urged them onward. One by one, they fell, their futile attacks crumbling under the unyielding precision of Tsukishima’s strikes. The draining enchantments of his blades, coupled with the debilitating aura of his armor, rendered their resistance meaningless. Soon, the forest floor was littered with the remains of his foes, their corrupted forms reduced to lifeless husks. The acrid stench of death hung heavy in the air, mingling with the earthy scent of moss and decay. Tsukishima stood amidst the carnage, his breath steady and measured. Slowly, he wiped his daggers clean on the tattered remnants of a thrall’s cloak, the motion deliberate and unhurried. He sheathed the blades and surveyed his surroundings. “They’re coming more frequently than before.” he muttered to himself. The forest was silent once more, but the silence was far from reassuring.

As Tsukishima pressed deeper into the forest, the atmosphere grew even more suffocating. The air turned icy, a biting cold that seemed to seep into his being. It was then that he heard it; a soft, almost melodic voice rising above the rustling of the trees. It cut through the mist like a siren’s call. It was haunting and yet irresistible. The sound of it drew him forward, against all instinct. Eventually, he emerged into a clearing, a small haven of stillness bathed in silvery moonlight. There, in the center, stood a woman; an ethereal figure in the dim light. Her skin was pale as moonstone, glowing with an otherworldly sheen that made her appear almost spectral. Her long, jet-black hair cascaded over her shoulders, a stark contrast against her luminous skin. But it was her eyes that caught his attention; bright, predatory, gleaming with a hunger that could not be disguised. She regarded him with a smile that was far from welcoming, but laced with a knowing, almost calculating allure.

Well, well,” she purred, her voice like honey, sweet and dangerous, “what do we have here? A handsome predator stalking the shadows. Tell me, stranger, are you lost? Or are you hunting?” Tsukishima said nothing, his crimson eyes never leaving hers, his daggers gleaming coldly in the moonlight. He had seen her type before; A type of vampire that could almost be considered a succubus. A predator in its truest sense; seasoned, dangerous, and cloaked in the art of manipulation. Her beauty was her weapon, but it was nothing compared to the sharpness of her mind. “You don’t have to look so grim,” she continued, her voice dropping into a low, sultry tone that seemed to wrap around him like a physical presence. “I could be... very helpful to someone like you. Someone so strong. Someone so... unique.” She took a deliberate step closer, her movements fluid, like water flowing over rocks, and yet there was a deadly precision behind every motion as she wrapped her arms around his neck. Her gaze never wavered, a predator’s gaze, appraising him with growing interest. “I can tell you’re not like the others. You smell... different. There’s something... intoxicating about it.

As she spoke, a pulse of magic rippled from her, a faint, seductive aura meant to ensnare his mind. Tsukishima felt it pressing against the edges of his consciousness, but it was nothing he hadn’t encountered before. He allowed the magic to wash over him, then flicked it away as one would a bothersome fly. His gaze, still cold and calculating, never faltered. “I’m married,” he replied, his voice low and cutting, as sharp as the blades he carried. His words hung in the air, a simple dismissal, but one that carried with it a weight of finality. The woman’s smile faltered for the briefest moment, and a flicker of something like confusion crossed her face, but it was quickly masked by an amused chuckle. “Married?” she echoed, as if the word was foreign, as if it meant nothing in her world. “How quaint.” Her gaze flickered, sharpening with renewed interest, her voice lowering to a dangerous whisper. “And yet... curious. I can smell the pain on you, lingering like a shadow. Whoever she was, she’s gone now, isn’t she?

The words struck a raw nerve, a jolt of old, buried grief pulsing through Tsukishima. His crimson eyes, dark with remembered loss, flickered with something akin to emotion before his expression hardened once more. He raised his dagger to the vampire’s throat, the metal catching the pale light, his stance a clear warning as she leapt back. “You should have walked away,” he said, the words cold, measured, as if he were issuing a final decree.

For a moment, the woman’s smile faltered, and there was a brief silence. Then, with a sudden, almost imperceptible shift in her demeanor, her smile sharpened into something far more sinister, her eyes glinting with malice. “And you should have bowed to your better.”  In a blink, she was upon him. Her body blurred into motion, a streak of darkness, and her claws flashed through the air with unnatural speed. Tsukishima, though fast, barely had time to react. The space between them closed in an instant, and the weight of the fight crashed down on him. The clearing, bathed in cold moonlight, became a battleground. The hunt had begun, and this time, he was the one being stalked.

Tsukishima stood unwavering as he slowly raised both of his hands, as the miasma swirling around him began to thicken and creep outward from his armor like a living fog. It seeped into the air and clawed at the ground. The unnatural haze spread in an ever-expanding circle, coiling around his foe like a serpent. The woman surged toward him, her movements fluid and fast as she closed the distance between them, but as the miasma wrapped around her, the change was immediate. Her graceful steps faltered, her body seeming to drag through the thickening air, as though submerged in tar. She stumbled mid-strike, the claws that had once cut through the air with lightning speed now slow and sluggish, barely able to cut through the dense fog that enveloped her.

What…?” she hissed, her voice laced with confusion and frustration as she struggled against the oppressive aura. Her claws scraped against Tsukishima’s dagger, the sound of her razor sharp claws grinding on metal echoing in the stillness. He parried her attack effortlessly, his movements precise and measured.

With a fluid motion, he countered, his dagger flashing through the moonlight. The blade sliced across her ribs in a shallow arc, but the effect was immediate. Her body shuddered, her breath catching as the combined power of his daggers and the draining miasma began to pull her vitality away. The gash was not deep, but it was enough; enough to sap her strength and leave her visibly weaker. Her movements grew more lethargic by the second. Her predatory gleam dulled as she staggered back, clutching at the wound, her form now betraying the cracks in her confidence.

Tsukishima’s eyes, ever cold and unwavering, locked onto hers with the precision of a predator closing in on its prey. “You thought your charm would save you,” he said, his voice as cold as the steel in his hands. He sidestepped her sluggish swipe with ease, watching her stumble as she tried to recover. His main-hand dagger lashed out once more, the blade carving a precise line across her arm. The strike wasn’t fatal, but it served its purpose to further slow her, deepening the effect of the draining enchantments that clung to his weapons.

She hissed in pain, her movements now jerky, as if her limbs were too heavy to command. Tsukishima tilted his head slightly, a faint, mocking smile curling at the edges of his lips. “But you’re just like the rest; arrogant and blind.” His words were ice, cutting through the mist. And with those words, the cruel reality that her charm, beauty, and her attributes had been no match for his meticulous planning.

Her eyes narrowed, the glint of fury flashing in her gaze, but there was no hiding the fact that she was growing weaker with every passing second. The mist, the blades, and his relentless focus were beginning to unravel her, piece by piece. “You... monster. What... what are you?” The words rasped from her throat, her breath shallow and strained as her body refused to obey her commands. She collapsed to one knee, her claws twitching uselessly at her sides, her strength drained by the relentless pull of the miasma that coiled tighter around her like a suffocating vise.

Each breath she took seemed to take more from her, as if the very air had become poison, slowly leeching away her life force. Her once-confident posture had crumbled, leaving her vulnerable, reduced to little more than a broken thing beneath Tsukishima's unwavering gaze. The woman glared up at him, her crimson eyes flashing with the last flickers of defiance, but even that spark was slowly being extinguished. Her body trembled as the miasma closed in, pulling at her like an anchor dragging her to an inevitable end. But then, something shifted in her expression.

A realization, a fleeting moment of clarity, crossed her face. “Gaia?” she whispered, her voice barely audible as she struggled to lift her head. Tsukishima tilted his head slightly, his expression calm, yet unreadable. The corners of his mouth tightened ever so slightly, betraying nothing. “Interesting...” he mused, his voice devoid of any emotion beyond detached curiosity. The mention of "Gaia" caught his attention, though he had little interest in indulging her further. She had failed to match him, and now she was but a fading echo in the midst of her death.

With a single and decisive motion, Tsukishima’s daggers flashed forward, their tips cutting through the air with chilling precision. The woman’s defiance flickered one last time, but it was brief, extinguished in an instant by the lethal grace of his strike. Her body crumpled to the ground, lifeless, as her final breath escaped in a soft, pained exhale. The miasma that had bound her dissipated, its oppressive weight lifting as her presence was extinguished from the forest.

As the eerie silence settled once more over the clearing, Tsukishima stood over the fallen vampire, his eyes still cold, but his mind sharp. He sheathed his daggers with deliberate slowness, the faint whisper of metal against leather breaking the stillness. He gave one last glance to her motionless form, but his thoughts lingered on her final word. "Gaia." It was a name that he had not heard of since he first brought about the Millennium Castle and realized his true nature as a True Ancestor. There were still things about the Earthland Goddess that remained a mystery to him and with everything going on, he did not have the time to research it in full. Though he had little interest in the woman herself, Tsukishima could not help but wonder what she had known. A part of him regretted not pressing for more information before silencing her. But another part of him felt a cold certainty that he would find the answers he sought soon enough.
