I will be participating in the Guild Event Solo, so I will go ahead and do the introductory roll to determine the minimum number of "monstrous humanoid creatures" to face. I will also be rolling for the number defeated in the following posts ahead of time for the ease of writing.

Update: Roll 1 was intended to be the total number of creatures, but the following 2-4 far exceed that so I will instead be using "40" the total sum of the 3 as the minimum number of creatures. As the posts are generally 150-200 WC, there will be more than the minimum number provided here.

The sun was still high in the sky as a large group of civilians made their way through the streets of Orchidia. Forming a perimeter around the ground were the many members of Sleeping Calamity who continued to dutifully fend off the creatures assaulting the group as they appeared. They continued to rescue and collect citizens of Orchidia as the group made their way through town towards the area where the Sleeping Calamity Guild Hall stood.

The leader of this group, Ikazuchi, was the most active among the escorts as he continued to move from battle to battle in order to assist the various guild members with disposing of the creatures. The attacks from the creatures were becoming more frequent as their group grew, but they were easily handled by the combined manpower of the guild. Unfortunately, the group hadn’t traveled even a third of the distance between the market and guild hall. The nine defeated creatures were only the beginning of the long and dangerous journey.

“These damned things…” Ikazuchi couldn’t help but curse when he noticed a sizable group rushing at them from one of the streets. The blood and gore decorating the surrounding area that they came from revealed the tragedy that had unfolded. Some people paled at the sight, but Ikazuchi and most of the guild members displayed furious expressions.

No orders were necessary as the dedicated attack team led by Ikazuchi charged into the group of fifteen creatures. Ikazuchi actively did all that he could to disable them as he led the charge. He broke or cut their ankles in order to allow the following guild members to easily target their weak points after they fell. Ikazuchi naturally finished several off on his own, but he focused primarily on reducing the losses that they would face had the weaker guild members dealt with the creatures alone. Still, injuries were unavoidable among the other members of Sleeping Calamity. Unfortunately, it wasn’t easy for the average Adventurer to replicate his feats.

There weren’t any casualties among the guild members, but multiple had suffered a varying degree of injuries while facing the fifteen creatures. Ikazuchi felt a growing concern as he checked the condition of everyone. The civilians were unharmed, but those escorting them were noticeably injured. He could have dealt with the previous situation if he were alone, but he needed the guild members in order to guarantee the safety of the defenseless citizens. ‘What a pain in the ass…’

“There’s another group coming from the east!” From a nearby rooftop came the voice of a mage that served as a lookout. Ikazuchi couldn’t help but sigh as he turned his attention towards that direction. “Everyone, make sure you pair up and support each other.” He only said the bare minimum before rushing towards the group of sixteen creatures. He intended to disable as many as possible before his guildmates engaged. Unfortunately, he was only powerful in a battle with a limited scale. After a battle against sixteen of the creatures the group experienced many more injuries and even casualties among the guild members.

The group was relatively lucky after that point, there weren’t any more large groups along most of their path. Ikazuchi alone dealt with the strays time and time again during this time in order to preserve the combat power of the group as a whole. Based on the afternoon sun, they knew that they needed to keep moving in order to not be caught at night. Thankfully, they were close enough to the guild hall by this point that they should easily arrive before the sun set.

“From behind! They’re coming from behind!!” Of course, things wouldn’t go smoothly for the group that had multiplied in size since Ikazuchi initially set off. He couldn’t help but sigh as he gave the forward direction that led to their goal one final glance. It appeared to be clear, and was likely close enough that it wouldn’t matter regardless. He felt both relieved and frustrated as he moved towards the group and announced. “I’ll take care of it, keep moving!!”

Rather than wait for the group of creatures to approach closer, Ikazuchi actively chose to approach and engage in combat as far from the group of Orchidia residents as possible. What he saw ahead of him was the largest group that he had encountered today, one that he didn’t even bother to count the numbers of. Without any burdens to protect, he believed he could escape from any number of these creatures even if he couldn’t kill them all.

The first thing that Ikazuchi had to do was change the attention of the creatures from the fleeing group. They didn’t seem to notice or care for him, likely due to him being a lone person. They were instinctively drawn towards the large group, so he intended to capitalize on that to launch the opening attack. He would force the creatures to notice him and regret not having done so from the beginning.

‘I need to stop their movements…’ Ikazuchi’s mind was racing as he rapidly approached the group at full speed. He noted the width of the street and height of the creatures before estimating that any one of the ten meter tall giants would be able to block the street if it laid horizontally. He made up his mind after recognizing this fact and rushed next to the leading creature’s ankle before smashing it to the side causing the thing to rise up horizontally into the air ahead of the following creatures.

This resulted in those behind tripping or coming to a halt at the expense of the one that fell. Ikazuchi retreated back after tripping the first in order to avoid being trapped underneath a mountain of flesh formed by the many fallen bodies. Those that fell blocked the path for those behind ensuring that the creatures wouldn’t be able to pursue the escaping group.

Ikazuchi dove into the fallen group without hesitation after the bodies settled. He intentionally targeted the tallest among those that fell in order to save himself the trouble of dealing with it later. The wedge of flesh around the nape of its neck flew away and steam billowed upward as he turned his attention towards those that were attempting to get up. He moved directly towards it and unleashed a kick at the arm supporting it causing the body of the creature to crash to the side and worsen their pile up.

By now, the group had moved quite a distance away causing the creatures to focus more on him than before. The arms that flailed without a target seemed to suddenly find their target causing him to feel surrounded compared to before. ‘These fucking things…’ He pushed forward, cutting away at the arms as he cursed internally. Chunks of flesh flew away as a bloody path was carved through the enemies.

Large amounts of blood poured out of the wounds decorating the giants. Steam rose from the blood shortly after it settled creating small amounts of steam that would easily be noticed from afar. The amount of blood continued to grow larger and larger as his sword continued to dance across the bodies of his enemies. He actively did anything that he could to bring the creatures to the ground in order to reach the nape of their neck and deal a fatal blow.

The severed limbs larger than Ikazuchi decorating the ground was a testament to the effort he was currently putting in to keep these creatures at bay. His efforts currently were laying the groundwork for him to be able to clean up easily, but he doubted that he would be able to capitalize on it as the creatures continued to swarm. Aware but unfazed, Ikazuchi continued to move aggressively among the giant creatures.

As Ikazuchi fought he managed to kill, or at least disable, most of the creatures that were initially knocked over. Their threat was minimal while the few remaining regenerated, so his attention was turned towards those standing. They were pushing, some even falling while trying to get closer. The buildings on either side hindered their movements, but they seemed to be showing signs breaking due to the struggles of the creatures.

“What a pain in the ass.” Ikazuchi complained, but he was smiling while doing so. He was quick enough to avoid the creatures, so stopping them was serving as a form of stress relief as well. While he may not realize it himself, he had quickly been frustrated by the restrictions of leading a group like he had been. He may have done so out of necessity, but he didn’t wish to do so again in the future. As for now, he would fulfill his duty to the best of his ability.

Ikazuchi wielded his swords to the best of his ability, but there was a limit to what he could do versus several creatures far larger than himself. The growing amount of steam in the pile of bodies also hindered him, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that the creatures were eventually able to overcome the pile up of bodies he created. Still, Ikazuchi wouldn’t give up due to that fact. He continued to defend himself with his swords as he scoured his surroundings for a new opening.

His eyes seemed to light up as he caught sight of one of the few creatures that was attempting to return to its feet. Ikazuchi immediately dashed towards it when he saw that. He made his way through the corpses and hands that attempted to grab him skillfully in order to arrive before that particular creature. A surprising amount of nimbleness was displayed as Ikauzchi jumped onto various parts of the creature in order to land on its shoulder.

“Thanks for the lift!” Ikazuchi was unrestrained as he cut at the creature that had stood up. The chunk of flesh was removed with ease. The creature’s body burst into steam as it lost its ability to maintain standing. Aware that this would happen, Ikazuchi had lunged more than ten meters to the side. His landing position was another creature with a similar height. His boot caused its flesh to ripple slightly as the bones cracked.

He moved from one shoulder to the other, taking a large wedge of flesh from the nape on his way. He used his vision to the limits as he searched for the ideal path to move along. He intended to move along the shoulder of the upright creatures as much as possible in order to rapidly hunt them. He had to constantly locate any that were targeting him while also finding a path to target them in return.

The creatures had their full attention on Ikazuchi resulting in mindless friendly fire on their part. While this may sound helpful, it prevented him from dealing finishing blows on multiple occasions. With the regeneration that they possessed, he was hindered far more than he was assisted by their behavior. The only positive point was that their attention continued to be focused on him due to how he moved from creature to creature.

Ikazuchi’s entire body was covered in copious amounts of blood from the creatures due to the steady combat. He created a trail of steam that continued to leave pillars of steam rising into the sky where the creatures he felled evaporated. This could be seen all throughout Orchidia, but there was no denying that the density of the steam from this street exceeded others. It was likely that only in places with several Sleeping Calamity members, or someone like Jikan, would a greater number of creatures be slaughtered.

The creatures continued to congregate towards his location, as if drawn towards the Guild Hall located beyond his battlefield. More than one creature managed to bypass him, but his battle hindered that and reduced the number approaching the guild from this direction. Still, Ikazuchi was content with the amount he defeated. He didn’t have any means to do more in a large-scale battle, so he chose to simply enjoy himself as much as possible.

He didn’t slow down and the creatures continued to fall under his blades. Unfortunately, maintaining his pace didn’t mean that he didn’t get tired. ‘I’m going to have to retreat soon…’ The sun could be setting in the distance, so he felt it would be ideal to rest before night fell. Ikazuchi couldn’t guess what these creatures would be like during that time, but he needed to be prepared for the worst. It was then that he happened to catch a glimpse of several guild members rushing in his direction.

‘Reinforcements, huh?’ The timely backup gave him the opportunity to retreat before a magical bombardment took place along the street. After that, the group made their way back to the guild hall where they continued to assist with the defenses. Ikazuchi rested for a period of time in the guild hall before joining the defense efforts periodically as they all waited for the long night.
