Nuala had grown weary of being in Oak City. She had spent the previous few days working over and over on the same quest and even though it always paid her good money, the thief was ready for a change of scenery. There was nothing wrong with Oak, but every once in a while Nuala needed to get out and see something different, which is why she decided to take her horse Shadowmere and go for a ride to the next town. The next towns in the west were Baska and Port Astera. Nuala had been in Baska Town not too long ago, and while it wasn’t exactly shabby, it was by no means the most exciting place either. The Port city Astera wasn’t a dream either (Nuala wasn’t a fan of the ocean or fish in particular) but it would make due for giving her that wanted change of pace. Nuala saddled Shadowmere and decided to go on her merry way.

Shadowmere hadn’t been ridden in a few weeks and it seemed as though the mare was glad to finally get some exercise in. Dhuilins weren’t like normal horses, so she had been able to deal with the strain and exhaustion that Savannah had caused her rather well, and the break had been well deserved. The mild and slightly cooler climate in the north of Fiore allowed the horse to rest and recover properly and Nuala decided that now was a good chance to get some exercise in. Now, Port Astera was only a few hours away and they depared in the early morning hours. Nuala wasn’t sure how long she would stay in the port city. She didn’t plan on staying for very long, but at the same time if there were jobs to be done then it couldn’t hurt to stay a while and try to make some money. That was always her main goal after all.

The weather in Port Astera was good. It was sunny, there were no clouds in the sky but it was also kind of chilly. She could smell the sea breeze in the air, the saltwater and the sounds of the waves clashing against the harbor were almost nostalgic. Nuala parked Shadowmere in a stable that was near the edge of the town. She would stay one night, maybe two depending on the type of work she could find here but other than that, Nuala didn’t plan on staying for a long time. Once Shadowmere was safely tucked away and nibbling on some straw and some flowers that she found in the meadow, Nuala headed downtown. Astera was currently occupied by a guild called Infinity Wolves, that had formed during her time away. Nuala didn’t know anything about this guild, but she also didn’t really mind or care. It seemed that they were doing their own thing and that was honestly fine with the thief.

Nuala herself was here for a reason and because of that, she immediately headed to the towns local request board. It was a simple wooden board that was errected in many of the cities of Fiore to help wandering wizards and merchants find easy work. The board was usually plastered in flyers that held information about missions and whatnot and Nuala went there to see if perhaps there was a job for her. If she wouldn’t be able to find something, then the harbor was also always a good place to find work. Nuala scanned the flyers and did end up noticing one that looked promising. Apparently the quest location was the harbor after all as the sailors of the ships were the ones who had put this request up. Nuala gave it a quick scan: the pay was promising, so she was most likely to accept this quest. With the flyer in hand, Nuala headed down to the port.

The port of Astera was a very perculiar place. It was usually filled with ships and lots of people. There was a lot of import and export happening here, so it was mostly a place to do business. Nuala recognized a few different backgrounds, since people from all over the continent travelled via Port Astera to do business with Fiore as a whole. It was always an interesting place to be at and it was incredibly busy today as well. Nuala walked around for a bit to observer her surroundings. People were trading all sorts of goods: tea and food from different countries, but also items such as carpets, decoration like vases and of course materials and clothes. It seemed that a place like this would never really quiet down. It was the same reason as to why Port Hargeon was equally busy. Those were the main sea trade routes of the country after all. Anyhow, Nuala had a job to do.

Nuala had been tasked to find one of the fishing boats as the captain of the fishing boats was the one who had put out the request. Finding the fishermen wasn’t a difficult task: all you had to do was follow the smell. Nuala did that with relative ease and approached the men by the pier. Without saying much, she waved the flyer around and they immediately directed their attention to her. Nuala didn’t know much about fishing but considering that they were here at the port and not out on sea was probably a good indicator that something was going wrong. Nuala approached the men and they nodded at her. “I’m looking for work,” she said simply and they acknowledged her. “Something about fish not being in the water?” Nuala honestly didn’t know what to make of that, but oh well. The man all looked very serious and then began to explain the situation.

It was honestly more complicated than Nuala had expected it to be. Well, maybe not complicated but rather complex. Apparently these fishermen had been fishing in these parts for years, and the amount of fish they got was always pretty good. The ecosystem around here was perfectly healthy, everyone who lived here made sure of that and because of that, there were always plenty of fish around. However this time around, they hadn’t been able to catch a lot of fish and they realized that there weren’t many fish in the water. The fishermen described a location around a nearby cove that could be reached via boat and then entered by swimming inside and explained that they assumed there must be some sort of monster perhaps that was eating all the fish. Or maybe it was a different reason all together. Finding out what was happening to the fish and bringing them back was Nuala’s task for the day.

That seemed simple enough and Nuala could do that no problem. “I need one of you to drive me out to the cove though, so that I can inspect it,” she explained and the fishermen agreed. They seemed rather tired of this and she could totally understand why. They needed to do their jobs in order to feed their families after all. Nuala hopped onto one of the fisherboats and they started their journey together. The cove was around 30 minutes away from the coast and while she was on the fisherboat, she stayed quiet and and simply enjoyed the ride. They arrived at the cove like they had discussed, and Nuala instructed the fisherboat to wait outside so she could get inside and see what was going on. Nuala didn’t know what could possibly await her inside, but she had some speculations which would then turn out to be true. It was the most simple answer after all: a monster.

If you could call it a monster. It was basically a griffin and its family of little griffin babies that for some reason had their nest in this cove. This made no sense for this species, which lived in the mountain rather than on the sea, but what did Nuala know. She didn’t have any qualms about killing a bunch of griffins, since they did eat a lot of the fucking fish in this area, but since it was a mother with her babies, they were already all hostile to begin with. The babies were also pretty much young adults at this point and their behavior was rather questionable. Still, Nuala knew what she had to do. She activated the spell connected to her mask, pulled out her two daggers and then started killing off the griffins one by one. She had to start with the mother, since that one was the strongest. And probably the one eating the most fish.

It was a hassle and definitely a blood bath, but it could be done. Nuala then moved on to the three children, which were all pretty large already. Her daggers didn’t make for the perfect weapon to murder a beast with, But Nuala was quick on her feet, stealthy and also very strong. She jumped onto their back so that they couldn’t fly away and hit their vitals with her daggers, which would defeat them rather quickly. Once all the griffins were dead, she collected some leaves and woods from the nest that the mother had built, and decided to set the animals on fire so that the corpses wouldn’t rot. The cove couldn’t exactly burn down anyways, but they didn’t want all that rotten meat in the water. Once it was done, Nuala left the cove and returned to port astera with the fisherboat, where she explained what the reason had been. Then she was paid the money owed and left.
