“That will be all for today. You all did well,” The spirits spoke with a disembodied voice that blew through the stadium. The Souther arbiter of wind was victories over his opponent, which just left them to face each other. The southern arbiter revealed that she focuses on the truest version of the magic. Holistically centered on defense. During the fight she put up a near-impenetrable barrier of wind and wore her opponent out, only to deliver a flying finishing blow with her sword. Meanwhile, Kazimir had yet to replace his staff. But he rarely used weapons anyway.

The southern arbiter greeted the mage with a handshake, “I was not aware that the wind could be so destructive. You said it was the right path earlier yes?” she asked. K az nodded his head side to side. It wasn’t as resolute as that. “It is what the celestial spirit showed me. It’s…” he struggled with the words.

His whole life he wanted to protect people and use defense magic but offensive magic was forced upon him in a way, but he grew used to it. “It’s what suits me.” He answered.

“The two of you will face off tomorrow and the winner will acquire the book of wind. It will take the shape of whatever the user desires. You will also be tasked with gathering the seven constellations.” The two arbiters of wind exchanged looks. The spirits explained that the seven are people that will serve to rebuild either of their clans. The two returned to their chambers, both exchanging a quick look at tomorrow’s rival.

The night took the land and Kazimir kicked back on his bed. The stone was hard beneath the thick blanket. He rolled over in his mind, how he would fight her and what winning would really mean. None of this was what he was trained for or told about. He found comfort, thinking that the same was true of the other three also.

A crack of lightning blasted through the arena. A warning shot! The wind mage jumped to his feet and ran into the hallway. Three dark shadows darted around a corner. Kazimir dashed into the courtyard and cut through the outdoors path to the other side. He leaped over the wall and rolled into a small room, where the humanoid shadows disappeared within.

“They are after the book,” the voice shouted. Kazimir rushed in and bumped shoulders with the other arbiter. He could smell her before he got close. Just like he could pick up the scent of the thieves.

“That way,” the woman said, using her vibration sense. It was odd to travel with another wind mage. The two rushed in and saw six thieves breaking into the glass case surrounding the book. Kazimir launched a group of wind blades at them. One sliced a man in his back. Four charged at him, while their ally toppled to the ground with blood leaking from his shoulder blades and saturating his shirt with crimson.

It pooled on his spine. The wounded man’s hands grasped at his bloody pain.

The others charged and teleported from one side of the room to the next in plums of white smoke. The thieves burst around with daggers drawn. Each slice sent a ripple through the air. Vibrations slammed into Kaz and pushed the wind mage backward. He skidded along his feet with his arms crossed over his face for protection.

The daggers swiped forward once more. The thin lines of deadly vibration crashed forward. Kaz braced himself and crossed his arms over his face. The vibrations slammed into a wall of wind. The Arbiter held her hands up and a barrier erected between the two of them and the assassins. The barrier faded and the thieves were gone.

“They got away,” Kaz grumbled and the southern arbiter placed her hand on the ground where they were standing.

“I don’t have anything either,” she replied, and then the wind spirits roused to life.

The disembodied voice told them to investigate a small town at the mountain’s base. The two ventured down the mountain in mostly silence. They both knew how odd it was to work together today only to be opponents tomorrow.

Once in the town they snuck around the streets and spoke to the skittish residents. It was a sparse town but had a busy bazaar. Kazimir turned invisible and vanished into the crowd. The arbiter spun around confused. “Wind magic can’t do that?” She questioned but Kazimir ignored it.

“I see one,” He replied and tracked the thief towards a small warehouse of goods. It was used to store old bazaar items. Kaz slunk in while unseeable and knelt down. The thieves were gathered in a small church, hidden behind the walls of the warehouse. They stood around an altar chanting. Kazimir took a deep breath and slid back towards the other arbiter. He tugged her arm and became visible once more.

She told him that she uncovered the thieves are part of a cult. Kazimir nodded and informed her that he had found their lair. “They serve a church that is hidden within a warehouse,” Kazimir pointed in the direction.

The two sneak in but no one is there. Along the walls are markings of illumin. Small ornate carvings were situated around an altar to an angel. A book of scripture was placed on the center of the altar. It continued some rituals that were undecipherable. “They worship the divine. But why are they here and what do they want with..”The southern arbiter began to speak but Kaz had already formed some theories. Perhaps the celestials were becoming too much of a threat. Or maybe they were finally here to get revenge on him for leaving his grace. Either way, they had what they were looking for.

“We should get back up the mountain. Nothing to do now,” Kazimir answered and the two returned towards the mountain. Kazimir kept his senses raised in case they were going to get ambushed again. They didn’t still the book but would certainly try again.
