PIRATES #4 [QUEST: VYRA] Empty Tue Nov 30, 2021 7:37 pm

A cold wind rippled through, leaving little doubt at this point of the nature of the seasons. Winter had come, and if it had not, it seemed only a short days away. The docks found themselves empty, save for a lone ship or two, designed for nothing more than the simple purpose of being docked as to ensure ice would not wholly consume the waters that rippled against the stone and wood. That was not to happen just yet, but inevitably it was to come if the wind was any indication. It was unsettling to a point, to see the docks so empty, particular given the stark contrast to what Vyra had been used to seeing since she had arrived within the city. She had been able to take solace in that, that something as simple and otherwise ordinary for the people of Hargeon allowed her to disappear amongst the people as though she belonged.

That was difficult, something that in spite of the time that she had begun to spend within Hargeon, within the company of Alisa and the other people of Blue Pegasus whom had accepted her, however much to the insistence or out of respects towards Alisa more so than that of Vyra notwithstanding, it did not change that she was still not used to everything, still not used to being around others and not feeling like an outcast. Their acceptance, however earnest or ulterior that it may have been, it was not the same as what she had come to appreciate from the docks. Here, there were more than enough people to either appreciate the simple nature of the inner-workings of the docks alongside her, equals in a manner of speaking, or otherwise there for more practical and pragmatic purposes. And in those, while they may have been different, one could at least acknowledge the existence of one another without the negative implications that she were so used to.

In a way, it was as though those interactions were gone, or at the very least, more seldom than what they had once been. Vyra hoped that it may have been attributed to a hopeful – if not foolish – idea that the circumstances of things had changed to where she was becoming accepted amongst a society that had otherwise viewed her cruelly. But she knew undoubtedly that much of that had to do with Alisa and the influence that she carried within Hargeon. The people had come to know of her as an associate at worst, close friend at best, of Alisa’s, and either one of them was enough to justify them treating her differently. As cruel and perhaps cynical as it may have been, Vyra was content with that. To no longer face the wrath of a random person committing an act of cruelty against her and not face the repercussions like that if it were towards someone else, it had seemed that those days were behind her.

At least, to some degree. The fact was, Alisa’s influence, although that of great power and influence within Hargeon, it was not something that the people all seemed to have carried or honored. Those who had even a semi-regular interaction with Alisa, they all seemed to have had had an idea as to whom Vyra was. Those who didn’t, seldom would there be that a second interaction would go as poorly. Exactly what was said, what was done, or any specifics that may have come of it, but rarely would the second interaction be something that happened. It made Vyra wonder to some extent, if not find herself a little worried quite what was conveyed, but regardless of what it may have been that was said, she could not lie in admitting that she was happy to be treated with more respect. The fact that a person or two may have been threatened in the process, Vyra was hardly one to shed tears on their account.

But regardless of how vindicated she may have felt now, it did not change that she were largely alone aside from that. Yes, she did have Alisa as not just a friend, but perhaps the most important person in her life now, but that was about it. Those in Blue Pegasus, their interactions were more superficial, more like that of someone trying to remind Vyra that they had done something good, particularly when viewed from a cynical perspective. Not all of them were doing it with intentions of getting on Alisa’s good side. No doubt that there were some who meant well in their intentions, but Vyra struggled to tell the difference between the two. She welcomed the interactions from both of them, but those interactions were just not like those of what she had with the people here. At the docks, there were always chances for something interesting to happen, someone who could give her a different perspective, but now those were all too seldom.

Now, she seemed to sit alone there, on the bench that so often she would return to to appreciate the view from beyond. It gave her a chance to see everything, every little interaction, every instance of the world that she was so interested in yet afraid to ever venture deeper than beyond this. It had taken her so long to build up the courage to interact with people alone since arriving in Hargeon, and much of that came following her meeting Alisa, but to venture further down there, to more engage with the people of the ships, those who worked there, that was something that she was not prepared to try. Part of it was because she did not know them, did not know if they may have known Alisa or otherwise respected whatever sort of influence that she may have carried, nor was she sure that she wanted to dispel the image in her head of that industry. It had captivated her throughout her time living in this world, and to shatter her expectations of it, it terrified her.

But that was something that was bound to happen again in the future, whether she were in Hargeon or elsewhere. The fact was, she was the benefactor of having an important friend, one whose presence theoretically gave Vyra an overwhelming level of protection and safety that she could not reasonably expect to receive elsewhere. But beyond that, there also came the benefit of the respect that came with Alisa’s name, artificial that it may have been. If she were to have gone anywhere else, be it Era or Magnolia or any other location within Fiore, even though Alisa may have still been able to carry some weight, it would not be anything like how it was in Hargeon. Thus the reality of things were more that her being in Hargeon was the most ideal scenario for Vyra. The unfortunate side effect though was that she would have to endure things like this, being the lone watcher in a dock without activity.

It was comparatively minor relative to how circumstances could have been for Vyra had her situation been different. The worst thing she stood to worry about were circumstances of boredom or perhaps a bit of poor weather, which even then would be wholly minor. It did not compare to having to sleep within the alleyways, still being subjected to a more cruel version of the same weather, but without the benefit of knowing she could return to the safety and warmth of Blue Pegasus. Along with any other benefits that the guild stood to provide for her, similar to the warm drink that she had with her, a nice combination of heated milk mixed with healthy levels of chocolate, combined together into a drink left her unsure of what to more appreciate; the taste or the warmth that it provided against the cold wind. Taking another sip, the more she came to think that both made it great, especially given the boring outlook before her. With little action going on, at least she had something that tasted good to salvage the trip out here.

It lent some level of comfort against a backdrop that was bleak, if not undesirable to the typical human eye. This was not “pleasant” weather, not conditions that anyone wanted to find themselves subjected to, having to spend more time than needed in any given sort of area, and yet, this was exactly where Vyra was, where she wanted to be, strangely enough. Perhaps it was that this was the safest thing for her, a chance to feel a little bit safer than how she might have otherwise found herself. Safe, was a peculiar word in this sense, as under the banner of Alisa and the Blue Pegasus Guild, she were arguably safer now than she may have ever been since she could honestly remember. It hardly felt like that though at times, not through the failures of her guardian or her associates, but rather based purely on the nature of Hargeon, of its people. At the end of the day, whatever she chose to do, once she was outside the walls of the Blue Pegasus facility, she was as much putting her own faith and trust into her survival against those people.

Such an example of this, this nature of people, it showed itself even here, even amongst the quieter days like this. The nature that people had, the opportunity to improve their own situation, to be otherwise safer or at far less risk relative to that of someone else, it made things ideal for them to take matters into their own hands, if they had been so inclined. She could see it, even just out of the corner of her eye, a person whom may stumbled onto the docks below her vantage point, stumbling as though they were drunk, a little scenario given the foolishness to try to commit any sort of offense or crime in these conditions sober. The cold aside, seldom little things of value within the dock at this point, though it was also true that there was far less security. For the inexperienced thief, it may have been the smarter play to try to rob this area, although it still lent the question of was it worth it.

Intrigue, perhaps boredom led Vyra into doing anything, where the reality had been that she could have simply just watched what happened. There weren’t any huge risk, and frankly, something like this, it was far from a situation she HAD to help, nor really should have felt obligated towards. Perhaps emboldened to some degree by the change of fate that she found herself subject towards, thinking herself stronger, untouchable perhaps, whatever the feeling was exactly, it was what prompted her to stop this would be theft attempt before things got out of hand, if that even stood to be a realistic scenario.

There wasn’t much an urgency for her to start moving to stop anything; the man’s movements were already indicative enough that he wasn’t particularly one for quick and deft actions, but instead sort of just slumping around, half-drunkenly searching through the crates that were left about while the minimalist security sort of existed, aware of the man’s presence, but not feeling any sense of obligation ot actually act upon it. It was neither worth their time nor were they interested either in handling it; they had as little reason to want to be out here as anyone, so anything that were to happen, as unfortunate as it may have been, they were comfortable with that.

Per that, Vyra’s arrival was neither met with any level of resistance nor objection. Whatever happened, extending not just to the would-be robber but also her would be out of their hands. It was a risk that she was bringing upon herself. A brief exchange of glances, neither seeming to indicate anything to the other conveyed this; she had free reign to do whatever she wished; he wouldn’t be stopping her. A weak nodding of the head acknowledged this as she moved towards the man that stumbled along the docks.

He reeked of booze, no doubt a man whom had gotten drunk in one of the many taverns and thought that this may have been a good idea. In his hands were the contents of some of the crates, a couple of miscellaneous trinkets that had no level of value or anything of worth, save for one thing. A small necklace that was wrapped around the man’s wrist, a few gems in it that flashed in the pale light. It may not have been a fortune, but it was worth more than everything else on his possession undoubtedly.

As the two awkwardly looked upon one another for a moment, Vyra pointed towards the necklace, indicating some level of interest, or at least, gave the appearance of intrigue. It was enough though for the man to be completely raptured by her, if not for her appearance than perhaps the curiousness of her horns, the wind having made the idea of keeping herself hooded a futile effort. As he looked onto her, enthralled, he began to unwrap the necklace from his wrist, almost all of the contents that he had tried to keep within his grasp falling to the ground as a result, some of them smashing into pieces, though even as they fell, it was clear to Vyra that they weren’t of real value. Not like that necklace.

One the man had removed it, he handed it to Vyra, hoping for some sort of appreciation, but as to what that may have been, it remained unclear. Either way, he did not receive anything that he was hoping for, instead only getting Vyra pushing him off of the dock into the cold water. As he fell and began to splash about, she casually began to walk away, her attention more focused on the necklace. It was nice, not quite as fancy as the items that she had seen people in Blue Pegasus wearing, but it was something, and something was better than nothing. Looking to the guard one last time to make sure that everything was good, she began to casually leave as the man nodded, giving Vyra an admitted rush to know that she now possessed the neck and the means of how she got it.
