That's what it was for right? It was for the people. To rebuild what was lost. It's how everything worked in this world. Great calamities and horrible atrocities would descend upon the people of the land. Chaos and destruction were always going to be present. The question was; Who would be the dealer, and who would receive it?

These people deserved better. Hell, even she deserved better than this. But reward and punishment were one and the same just seen from different perspectives. One man's suffering could be the rewarded treasure of another. This world was cruel. You learn to accept its evils, and often deal back to it. Taking in the joys of killing those that wronged you, or those that wronged others. The only way to be rid of monsters is to kill them. And often, it's those with bloodied hands that continue to do that dirty work. You can't escape the darkness that encompasses your heart. It cannot be done. But those pure, those untainted by the corrupt shadows that this world brings, they were the ones worth fighting for. And this feud between figureheads, family, people in power the world would soon forget... It was all pointless in the end. What mattered was what these lives, the lives of these people would do.

Psykhe took a moment to take it all in. All of these lives could be ended in fractions of a second. Fractured moments would pass and all of them would be dead. It would be just that easy. Deep breath in. Slow exhale. This desolate town was just one of many on today's trip. All of it was for the good of the world. Small seeds planted in the hearts of nobodies. She could never commit all of their names to memory, but they would remember her. She might be just another person who traveled with them to rebuild a building, but she was someone who came to build their home. An outsider.

Even if her name would not be remembered, the image of her would remain. But was this all for fame? For infamy? Was it because it was right, or because she could? Whatever the case, memories of her would remain with these people. And the thoughts of how, if they would honor their memories of her were was what kept her entertained as she stared back at the world that passed her by. Though, literally. The seat in the back of the wagon allowed her to look back at all of the countrysides that they passed by. The chatter of the people behind her, talking about their lives. Meaningless small talk and other discussions. Who was seen where, a new hobby they took up, a new life hack on how to water crops. None of it really of interest to her, not now at least.

It was all a strange concept when put into a larger frame. These people commanded armies, often from their safe positions within towers miles and miles away while soldiers whose names they would never read or even hear, let alone even ever be in the same room with, would die for them. Nameless guards fighting a war on their behalf. Nameless townsfolk dying in the midst of burned-down towns from dramatic spells and great demons and beasts. What was a dragon yesterday could very well be a massive angelic neko from some alternate space dimension called Exis to eat the hearts of the innocent? A creature that very well should remain a child's imagination, that could just be on the edge of some lost artifact waiting to be used by some unknown mage part of some other army who targets another innocent group of people as their victims.

This world was strange, and often the more she thought about it, the stranger it became. Was it worth the thought? Perhaps not. But it was better than talking over what her favorite vegetable to eat for breakfast in spring was. And for that much, she was thankful they weren't exactly pestering her for answers. Perhaps it was how different she was to them, or perhaps the fact alone that she was an outsider.

The idea of an alternate life would run through her mind as she tried to savor the moment's peace for just a moment longer. Any second she could spend in her mind rather than trying to entertain some low intelligence front-line fodder would be preferred. It wasn't like any, or most of them would really have any entertaining thought. Perhaps a scholar among them to pass the thoughts of some eloquent passage she had yet to hear of. It wasn't impossible, but with the hillbillies in the back of this wagon she doubted the value of the passengers. Perhaps the man at the reins of the horse could be of interest, but the faster they completed their work, the faster the next job would happen, and from it, another travel of silence to the next and so forth. Whatever one place lacked, the next could damn well have. It was unlikely that every town out here was empty and devoid of anything interesting.

It would be those little gems hidden among rocks that would keep her interested. Perhaps some mason rebuilding some stone castle who would shed some light on rather interesting forms of magic, or perhaps he would be one versed in speech. A poet in hiding.

The thought of some sage-like man racked up in strange texts and a warped sense of reality offering a different perspective on life and literature was rather fascinating. She began to imagine what that sort of person would look like, be him man or be her woman. Their personality type, or if they were some quiet reserved bookworm who had been collecting novels and sorts in secret, and reading forbidden texts having some hidden research on some arcana or some other interesting feat. Or perhaps someone who was more vocal about it, a man who could recount centuries ago and wrote and performed his findings as poetry on display for all to see. Or maybe a local published author of sorts.

She looked towards the men in the cart with her, only noticing one of the females. She wondered if perhaps one of them could be some sort of secret book fanatic, someone to have an interesting conversation if prodded with the right bait.

Before she could open her mouth to ask, a few of them would stand up to look out the cart, excited almost to see their home in a different way. From a road, they not often took perhaps, or to great friends long missed. They looked happy, for a moment at least.

It would be wrong of her to prod them with questions to cause them to miss a moment that could define their life. But she looked over with them, seeing the other wagons and carts. Some of them holding workers like the one she sat in, while others seemed to carry materials from long elsewhere. Were they filled with friendly faces they were excited to see, or were they excited to see that there was others joining them in rebuilding their community?

She couldn't help but find the struggle moot and pointless. They would rebuild what dragons and destroyed, but for how long would it stand? How long would it last this time? It was not like these new materials would prevent such destruction again. If anything, it would just make it just as easy to destroy as the first time. Nothing would be different in the end. The town would stand again, only to be knocked right back down. And the cycle would continue. Like war, battles would be fought, people would die, cities fall, and they get rebuilt and it all starts over again. It was an endless struggle that would never end. A battle started because people demanded power. And pawns like the ones beside her would pay the price.

But perhaps it wasn't about the payoff. Even if this was their monthly life. Rebuilding their cities every weekend or whatever misfortune their miserable lives might have to endure, it was their home. They weren't just rebuilding a restaurant, or a library they're rebuilding their home. With it, they reinforce and rebuild their community. They might lose some of their possessions in flame or some space portal, god forbid a mage of that quality terrorizes them. They would have each other, for however long they live. It's that sense of community that makes a guild worthwhile, why wouldn't it apply to some backward town in the middle of nowhere? She would have no reason to visit if it wasn't for some job that was paying. It wasn't like it was a tourist destination, but perhaps in helping out, in the small chance she retired out here, maybe she would have people who would have her back.

When it was all over, maybe she could have an escape. Just maybe. The idea of it certainly was a thought to consider, even if it was unlikely. But perhaps a world where the only danger comes every so rarely might be preferred over magic that could very well remove her from existence. There's a chance. Even if it was near to none.

No one works for a life where they work forever. The endless mindless jobs hired to take just to pay bills. Everyone works for a life where they wouldn't need to anymore. Be it to become some lord or king of sorts, or to settle down and have a family. A quiet life where issues are few to none or one where power is always within grasp. There were benefits to both. There was also the choice to make a living in some small city-state that would allow one to benefit from both. A handful of servants to tend to her needs, rather than a small army to feed and worry about. Sure, she could become a lord of sorts like Cassia the Dauntless or now Hildegard, but was it worth all of the struggles? Was it really better or worse than choosing to retire into a farmer and shoveling up cow dung?

There was also the idea of perhaps just owning the land and having farmers tend to it for her, but was that any different than a small private mansion and her select servants to tend to her needs? There certainly was a lot to consider and think about. It would be something she would have plenty of time to do so.

Provided work done, albeit small petty affairs compared to others, she would have a hand, even if indirect in seating the new royalty. A handsome reward to pay her for her good deeds. Perhaps more than enough to get what she wants. Perhaps the payment in the land itself, or a position of rank along her side. The idea of being appointed royalty could be a fun one, only to take the crown herself. The crown would command respect, but with it, would remove the very pleasures she can take up as a common person. It was a balance she would try to take for herself. A balance she would struggle to discover. She closed her eyes, taking in the aroma of the scenery as the sound of the wooden wheels of the wagons continued. The chatter began to die down as they would settle, eager to assist, and eager to help.

She took this moment to calm herself, to gather composure in the best way possible. To meditate on her thoughts. They were just thoughts, for now at least, but surely there would be something that could manifest into something actually be useful. Every outcome, every possibility. She would have to find them.

The sound of the dirt and rocks under her began to shift as they moved to cobblestone roads. The rough and messy pavement of these back road towns. It was where they needed to be. It was where she needed to be. The reason she came out here was to help them all rebuild what was lost.

They would all begin to file themselves, moving to two or three wide down the main road, some splitting off to more specific areas of the town, while the rest made their way to the city center and everyone disembarked for their task. While she had come out here to help them, she didn't exactly know what her task was. She wasn't all that different than them. Most, if not all of them weren't able to perform magic, and those that could, wouldn't be doing this part of the work. She started to wonder what sort of spells would greatly assist in both rebuildings, as well as combat. A sort of force magic, or telekinetic magic seemed the most versatile, but any Maker-Mage whose creations could long last after their caster left seemed to be just as important. Surely a Cnady-make mage would have their purpose, though the sweet treats may attract a new problem.

She hopped off the wagon with the others. A few of them looking around to find masses working fast and long before they arrived. From what they could see, the place looked rather freshly built, leaving it to the imagination of what was left to do. She looked around, wondering if there was anyone with the affinity. She could harness her own abilities to help, but the thought of it may bring more harm than good. She might be more useful, but it would mean far more work to be done if everyone else ran in fear.

But two individuals would catch her eye. A few nekos on the other side of the plaza, the both of them using claws to sharpen tools, and carve wood into more specific pieces. While it wasn't much, it did at least answer one of her questions. People weren't just people. Everyone used their abilities to their maximum capabilities. If you were born with the appendages, use them. But with the eyes set on her already, she wondered if it was a good idea to even attempt. For now, she was just like they were. For now, she would work and struggle as they would. And like them, she would await the orders.

She stood there, beside the others she came with. The crowd shuffled and moved around them. Some even hopped back into the wagon they came in, and left. Everything seemed to have a place, and the new workers would simply replace the others. They could have just as easily joined in, but the faces of the others made it seem like they came with something specific in mind. The woman that formerly sat beside her smiled, waving them all to follow her. Without much else to go on, there really was no reason to deny her lead. She knew something they didn't.

The walk would lead them down the roads of the city, away from the crowd, only to lead to what seemed to be remains of rubble. Though, looking closer, the ruins seemed less from the destruction of a beast, and more from man. The woman would explain it, leading to a stack of lumber laid long before they arrived. This area of the town was the slums, and one of the few areas left untouched. But unlike the spared places, it was in need of dire attention.

Without fight or fuss from the men, they would begin to moving and placing the lumber. Most of it cut and measured beforehand. She herself would take to dismantling some of the more weathered abandoned structures. Taking a hammer in hand, she got to work.

The large heavyweight at the end of it was enough to break the things needed. She swung the large sledgehammer down on the decayed wood. The first few swings were done out of entertainment. Satisfaction in the small bits of destruction that any child would enjoy. She couldn't help but smile at the cracking of the wood. The bits of the house that caved in after her attack upon it. She considered it an enemy, going only after its weak points, but careful to be weary and dodge any falling debris it may try to counter-attack with. Her task was simple, mostly. But as the house would soon crumble and come down, she had to be careful to still allow herself a way to exit. She started at the far parts of the house. She swung at the supporting structures for the roof first.

The idea being that if she could start with the top, she wouldn't have to worry about much coming down, as it would be sectioned at a time. If she started with a pillar in the center, any point at any moment could come down upon her. That simply was not a risk worth taking. The embarrassment wasn't worth it.

She may have been given pity, or a more simple task to preform herself compared to the others. Or perhaps this was her reward. She swung again, a crack against the wall, the creaking of the boards echoing through the desolate home. She wondered what kind of family lived it it when it was still lively, and her mind explored the kinds of people that would call this lifeless place home long after. She paused for a moment, looking around seeing the bits of discarded food and trash. This building was one that should have been reduced to ash like the others, and would be better off without. In order to build new structures, the ones left in ruin needed to be removed and destroyed. It would be in poor taste and in poor mind to build on top of rubble. Burnt wood as a foundation for a home would only crumble in the years to come.

But with destruction on the horizon so often, was it foolish to imagine a life without worry? Was it really worth their time to start fresh given the opportunity, or salvage what could be and build on whats left. It would certainly save time and work, so why continue?

It wasn't too hard to figure that building these homes from scratch definitely reinforced the idea of community. It also wasn't hard to figure that the homes being freshly rebuilt was more of a symbolic thing than purpose. If they did just enough to survive and live, then they might as well all lived in a community center, or better yet a cave of some sort. These homes were a representation of life and the lives that dwelled within them. And as of now, Fala stood with a hammer breaking down the foundation and structure of a home that used to be. A place a family once laid their head to rest. A place where worries were cast aside. A place where people could rest.

She swung the hammer once more. The wooden beam cracking under the weight of the house, waiting to snap. She turned and walked out the other way, careful to not break it all the way through. Almost on cue, as she made the distance, that part of the house would cave in. The rood would collapse and dust and dirt would float about, causing her to instinctively cover her face and mouth. The light from outside would reveal itself once more.

Smiling faces holding shovels would greet her from outside of the house, all of them waiting to do their part of the work. She may have been on the inside destroying what used to be a home, but on the outside was the others waiting to do their part. Maybe it was just how they did things. Maybe they feared her.

It wasn't like she particularly would have enjoyed shoveling trash and loading it up to be taken away. her job wasn't the first pick she would have chosen, but of the two options she had before her at the moment, it was the preferred choice. She smiled and nodded, only to turn back to her work. She could count a dozen kids with shovels finding some weird entertainment in helping out, along with all of the others. With the rate they would clean it up, she would imagine it would be done in no less than an hour, for that side at least. As she went back into the house, picking support structures and locations, she wondered how many more sections would be left of this house. her mind wandered then to other buildings. She tried to remember how many abandoned structures she saw on the way in.

It wasn't like they were the only group that went into this part of the town. There were definitely other people in this section of the small city. If everything had its own team and section, she would imagine there was one or two people in the last remaining buildings, and the clean-up crew was shuffling between the piles of rubble to clean up. The rest of the people she came with seemed to be on construction duty, being assembly and cutting the wooden beams to act as the new home's skeleton. The more she analyzed how things were working here, the more it seemed to surprise her how smooth it all worked out.

With a nod, she began to wander around the house, categorizing weak points to have it all crumble down. But in her head, she imagined what the house looked like in its prime. Beyond the trash and decay, she could see remnants of paint and wallpaper. The porcelain shards marking what used to be a sink. The tile fragments showing what might have been a kitchen. Coils and springs of what might have been a mattress or a box spring. It was hard to not consider the remains to be a corpse of a house.

That was really the truth behind it all. These abandoned homes were just cadavers left behind by families that weren't returning. The houses starved with care and attention, their bodies mutilated and repurposed by nature as they would begin to rot and decay. The thoughts echoed in her mind as she swung at the doorways. The structures that may have supported the home in its prime are no more than obstacles in her way. They were reduced to simple tasks and no more important than a bush that had chosen to grow in the midst of a traveled path. Like the bush, this house would be reduced and removed.

The cracking of the wood would be heard once more as the door frame would cave in almost too easily. The end of the hammer tearing into the wall, ripping through thin and weak wood. The momentum of the swing carrying it, and with it, releasing it from her grasp. She shocked herself at the judgement, the hammer passing through the wall and heading into the other room. The remnants of what was the bathroom, or she assumed given what remained of a toilet would begin to creak and crumble. Barely standing as it awaited the final push.

The hammer itself had gone into the next room, and she would try to estimate its trajectory through the wall. Passing though she would find the discarding belongings of some passerby or some transient who called this empty home their own. She shook her head at the thought, wondering how many unfortunate souls were forced to endure such a life, and the problems they would face. Was this any more than a roof (with holes) over their head, or was it something more? Could it had been a former resident living in the empty shell of the house to relive old memories they were quite fond of? Or was it someone who chased what could have been? Another street rat trying to make do with the hand they were dealt. She took a deep breath, trying to ignore the stench left behind by what formerly lived there.

Deeper in the room she would find the long handle of the tool she was given, though at the end of it something quite unexpected. The heavy weight resting within the collapsed and caved in head of what she would assume would be a body. The smell of human rot before her, but she tried her best to dismiss it.

Given the terrors caused by the dragon, with all of the property destroyed, it would be foolish to think not a single life was harmed. every day bandits attack some caravan, some trader, some traveler. People are hired to protect, people are hired to kill. The question of if this person had came in here to seek refuge and died after, or had died long before was up for debate, and not something that was her concern. With the children outside, she left the home to inform some of the others. While she didn't care for it, she wasn't going to be held accountable for it.

Finding the woman from before, she would quickly and quietly explain to her what had happened and transpired. With a nod from her she would wave over two other men and lightly pay Fala on the back. With a nod of her head, she gestured at the others as if telling her to busy herself with something else in the meantime. With a heavy sigh, she turned to the woodworkers and watched them as they began to work their own sorts of magic. The various tools she had seen before, she had not seen used like she was now. All of the saws and sanding materials to ensure these new structures would be of the highest quality.

Of course, it wasnt like they were given the top-of-the-line materials to work with. It wasn't like they were shipped wood from the strongest trees with great resistance to magic or any catastrophe. But they made use of what they were given. They maximized every little bit. The shavings of wood gathered into a bucket and sealed and taken away elsewhere. The men waved for her to come over, and with small steps would have her help. They were experts in this field, to them, she was a novice.

They would begin to lift and hoist the large wooden planks. Insets of two they would carry a few of them to their destination, laying them out, prepping it for the next step. There might have been a large number of people to help, there seemed to be far more buildings to assemble than they had hands. With only a few people per building, it seemed they all needed to maximize their time and work. To set the foundation in a rotating team may prove useful to save effort and streamline the process. But she wondered if it was something worth bringing up to them. For now, she held her tongue.

The men seemed to complain, albeit slightly on the matter. They continued to pick up each of the long and larger wooden structures, each of them marked for nails and drills. She watched the others seem to mark and prep the pieces. In her mind, it would have been at least a bit entertaining to race to complete the project, but such haste would lead to poor quality. One stack. Two stacks. Three stacks. Each continued progress, she watched the others struggle. She spoke up, first to the ones she was working with. After they finished their load, moving what needed to be moved, she spoke up again.

"Why stop? Why not finish it up?" she asked.

It was a hard point to argue against. They were already doing it. It wasn't a competition. So they continued. From bags of cement and dirt to lay for a foundation, to the wooden beams that would soon be used to layout the structure of the soon-to-be home, or storefront. When they were done, it would be the start of a new face of the town. She smiled with the thought, eventually the ones struggling to make their marks instead picking up where they left off, placing the pieces they had brought.

It seemed with every trip back to the stack, every bag, every bundle, every bag of tools they transported seemed to get heavier and heavier. How long were they out there already? How long would it be? She pondered the thought as she made another trip, only to find that there was no one else joining her. The sounds of hammer and nail are absent from the ambiance of this strange and quaint little town. She set the last bags of concrete down before looking around, only to see everyone sitting down, mostly in the same place.

Were they finished? What was the reason for them to stop? Had they decided to make her do all of the work? She wasn't sure if she was supposed to be mad, upset or joyed that it was time for a break. But before she could ask, or yell depending how she started her next sentence, she was waved to join them. It seemed it was lunchtime, and sandwiches and other small treats were provided along with refreshments of water and juices of the like. She shrugged and took enough for herself, only to look around to take in the people she was working with. It was hard to say who was what really. It seemed as if humans were more present than other races, but she wasn't alone in being a racial outsider. The nekos were present, as were elves. it would be hard to say if a Nephilim or something was present.

There was also the question of how many, if any were present before her, of werewolves or vampires, or perhaps something entirely unique. Or the chance of another daemon like her hiding among the masses. While this idea wasn't one that would advance the task at hand, it was one that kept her mind occupied while her body was preforming the work desired from that woman fighting for the throne. What stopped any of those so called royalty from being any of the things she imagined? A secret mass of vampires leading the world government. But for what reason? What plan would they have for gathering in a mass collective unit? Would they have plans to wager war for the plan to exterminate entireties of other races?

Each of these people commanded with vastly different ideals. Among them, some held friendly regards to one another. Cassia may have had the people's vote in securing a nation for them, but was it something they could actually achieve? No, it was not something they achieved as Hildegard won. She remembered herself in Fala's shoes. Was it something within reach? It was a dream that seemed believable at least, but surely it was something that together, the people themselves could obtain. But was it true? Or was this all another lie?

Who could predict the future and tell the truths of it all? Would could say with conviction and be telling a true and accurate telling of the future? Who could confirm that in the last moment, the world wouldn't turn on its heels, to have some victor executed before them? To showcase this loss in favor of some collective evil they would fight instead? It may have been a child's own story to tell of some calamity of some beast that all people of all walks of life needed to instead come together to stop an even greater evil. But then what of it? Would the side dealing the final killing blow be the ones that could declare victory and set the stage for the truth within the books? would it be a way for them to spin a warped tale of how they were the ones alone who reigned supreme or would it be told as it should?

History books were written and told by the side that conquered the other. Losers were never able to tell their truth, being washed away as savages within the text for the generations to come. That was how it always was. With the occasional child growing up with hatred or resentment to right the wrong preformed onto them.
