Atani

Atani was beginning to grow tired of these pirate attacks. She thought that after two ships being destroyed by her alone and those pirates aboard the ship losing the bounty they stole, the nearby pirates would have gotten the message that Hargeon's waters weren't a place they should bring their boat. That of course wasn't even considering any other mages who might have been helping in the efforts to quell the uptick in attacks and looting. Still, there seemed to be no end to these pirates. They foolishly came to Hargeon thinking it would be the perfect place to rob the merchants who flocked to the port town, only to have their ships sunk by mages who were hired to do so.

That being said, these attacks did seem to ward off the 'lesser' pirates. In other words, the ones who neither had the skill nor experience to fight against mages. In her experience, pirates were not well equipped to deal with magic attacks, but she wagered that was not true for the successful pirates who had been around the seas more than a few times. In fact, one of those pirate bands made their way into Hargeon's waters. They were by no means the most notorious of all the pirates, but they were no force to be reckoned with. The wise option would be to leave the pirates to a likewise experienced mage who knew what they were doing. At the bare minimum someone who could perform offensive spells adequately should have taken the front lines for this sort of quest. Instead, however, it was Atani: a supposed healer who had yet to master a single healing spell. Someone who did not feel she earned her title of The Sylvan Fay. A Wood Elf, of all people, who were not known to fare well in water.

Atani

Yes, despite having no experience steering anything but a rowboat, Atani took the request. If she was being honest, it was mostly for the pay. Dangerous pirates yielded a larger amount of jewels for a reward. What could she say? That being said, she of course would have never taken it in the first place if she wasn't sure she could handle it. She might have needed the money, but she didn't need it so much that she would put herself in a situation that would threaten the completion of the quest. That would be idiotic at best.

The elf had full confidence in her abilities to destroy this particular ship. Still, she could not do so as recklessly as she did in the past. The first ship she had been lucky. The pirates were drunk and singing sea shanties. The drinking dulled their senses and the singing was loud. They had no clue that she was sneaking on board. With the second ship, Atani did not have that luxury, but with her newfound water magic, she was able to swim under the waves undetected and mount the ship from there. It was entirely possible she could do the same again, but she had a feeling this particular group of pirates would not be so foolish as to swim so close to shore that it would be a possibility in the first place. No, they were likely further out at sea like the first ship. One thought that crossed Atani's mind was that she could row out on the ocean again, but that idea was quickly crumbled up and thrown out the window. Again, these pirates were far more cautious. They would not let so much as a rowboat get close enough to where swimming would be a viable option.

Atani

So, what could she do in that scenario? Well, as reckless as it seemed, Atani's goal was to make the boat come to her.

Hargeon was not just a port for merchants to dock and sell their wares. It was also a place for pirates to bring recruits. They were traditionally found in backwater taverns and pubs late at night. All she had to do was inconspicuously sneak her way into one without revealing the guild tattoo plastered on her chest. She was able to, for the most part, cover it up with makeup, though she expected it wouldn't hold long. If she started to sweat in Hargeon's heat, the foundation would drip. For extra protection, she covered it up with clothes that dressed her to look like a pirate. She had to say, she definitely looked the part.

Her plan was to claim to be one of the pirates whose ships were destroyed. She had already considered leaving the sorry crew, and her decision was solidified when they let a foolish mage destroy their vessel and make off with the loot. To prove what she could bring to the crew, she would demonstrate a bit of her water magic that she allegedly picked up on an island years ago. Fighting magic with magic would be a useful skill when combating any mages who tried to board their ship. As an elf, she knew her way with a bow and a dagger as well. If necessary, she would even drink with the pirates. Rum and beer weren't among her top choices-- elven wine was what she was used to-- but whatever got her on that ship.

Frankly, Atani was surprised at how well the plan of hers worked. It seemed that the pirate crew she needed to infiltrate was looking for new hires.

Ironically, they too had the same idea that a mage should help defeat another mage, but they were supposedly hard to find among pirates. It made sense in Atani's opinion. Most mages preferred the land. They could make great use of their talents where people resided. The sea didn't typically offer as many benefits, but to each their own. Atani's excuse for the matter was that she was once magicless, but obtained the ability to use it when her boat docked on a small island just off the southern coast of Fiore whose inhabitants used magic to aid in their aboriginal way of life.

It was all a lie, of course, but she felt no shame in lying to those who pillaged and plundered. Plus, they were moronic enough to believe her tale. Atani was no master of deception, but it worked just well enough on pirates who were already slightly intoxicated from having drunken before her meeting with them. Successfully deceived, they took her to their ship which sailed out in the distance.

Atani grimaced when she saw how far they were from Hargeon. It would be a long trip home, rowboat or otherwise.

"Y'alright, lassie?" a gruff voice said from over her shoulder. "I'm fine," she offhandedly replied. She wanted to keep her responses short and simple. There could be no chance of herself blowing her cover before she had a chance of recovering the stolen bounty... And somehow destroying the ship again without anyone noticing. Doing it via magic was impossible at her level. So, it was up to the barrels of gunpowder again. The only problem was, she would have to be able to do that discreetly. With all the recent attacks on pirate ships, that was going to be difficult to pull off. Security was tight.

"Gather 'round, lads!" A loud voice boomed from the upper deck. A spoon clanged against an empty metal tankard. The captain of the ship stared harshly at the crew members as they scrambled to the centre of the ship in response to his order. Atani, of course, followed suit. Once everyone was there, he continued on with his message.

"Ye've 'eard about those attacks, ain't ya? We are not gonna be one of those pirates. I want ye on the lookout tonight. A quarter of ye have to stay awake, the others can sleep. Newest recruits go first." The captain peered at Atani and a few other members who were also evidently on the newer side. "Blondie, yer below deck tonight with ol' Scar. The rest stay up here for lookout. Dismissed!"

It was nearing sunset by the time Atani followed a man with a scar across his face to the bottom of the ship, the very place where she often sneaked on board to sabotage the pirates. As was expected, there were barrels of gunpowder awaiting explosion. However, she had one problem: the man she was stuck with. He was muscular, well-built. She doubted he was one of the newer recruits the captain was talking about. The man was older. He gave off the aura that he had many years of experience under his belt. She'd have to knock him out to get away with anything tonight, though that likely was not going to be an easy feat.

"It's just you and me down here tonight," the man said. "Seems so," Atani replied. Again, short and to the point. "I don't think much is gonna happen tonight, but I'll show you the ropes in case." And so he did. Frankly, there wasn't much she needed to know. The cannons would be handled by the more experienced pirates.

All she would have to do was keep a lookout through the cannon's windows, switching up which one it was from time to time of course to check for incoming attacks from multiple angles. That said, this job was far less important than the jobs of the others up on the deck. They had the much better advantage of viewing any potential attacks. Atani's position really only let her view close threats in detail. What she had done in the past would have qualified as one of those close threats, so there was some merit to their choice of scouts; however, what they failed to realize was the threat was already onboard.

Atani knew there was no one to look for. She had already taken the request. Nobody would be responding to it. Still, she did her duty. Seeing as no attackers were coming, the man who was supposed to be looking out for her began to doze off. At some point in her watch, the elf found a spare board that had likely chipped off the boat at some point and began lazily playing with it, seemingly looking like she was trying to find some source of entertainment in this mundane task. The man didn't seem to take much note of it. She switched to a window close to him as he started to nod off. Just before he could fully fall asleep though, she whacked him against the head. She winced as it made a louder noise than she intended. His body crumpled, but she caught it before it could hit the floor and make an even louder noise. A few moments went by and she didn't hear the sounds of any footsteps coming down the stairs. Breathing a sigh of relief, the mage went about the rest of her preparations.

Afraid that moving the barrels of gunpowder this time would arouse suspicion, she decided that if she was going to ignite them, they would have to be ignited where they stood. Her only hope was that it wouldn't cause damage to the bounty. So, she made the trail of gunpowder leading towards the barrels. Before lighting the black powder aflame, she made sure to move the man she had knocked out, out of harm's way. There was no reason for casualties tonight... the elf thought as she lit the trail with a match.

She was in hiding with quick access to the stairs. There was no way the pirates would think she wasn't at fault, even if she came up with some excuse like the mage was using an invisibility spell. The scorched trail was leaving from the place where the scarred man laid unconscious. Of course it was her.

Once the pirates filed down, she made her escape. The captain was not among them, so she burst into his quarters. "Captain, there was an explosion in the ship!"

"Bloody hell." He rushed to the source of the chaos, leaving the bounty unattended. She grabbed the loot that had been stolen and went to find the escape dinghy... Only to find her explosion was very inconveniently placed. The front end was blasted to pieces and a fire was spreading across the wood. She frantically looked to see what else she could do, but to her dismay, some pirates had resurfaced. They saw her with the bounty. They knew she was the mage. She had to think fast.

Hoping her water powers would save her, she jumped off the boat. She let the magic flow to the soles of her feet. Her eyes squeezed shut as she fell, but then, there was no splash. She did not feel her body become submerged in the water. When she opened her eyes, she was standing. She took a step forward and she still remained afloat. She could walk on water.

Treasure in hand, Atani sprinted as fast as she could from the pirate ship. She didn't look back as it burned in the distance. She had stolen goods to return.
